Qatar
My husband and I would like to say a big hello from Qatar. We have lived here
for 7 years and I originate from Penrhiwceiber, near Mountain Ash in the Cynon
Valley while my husband Nadeem was raised in London. He works for Qatar
Petroleum and so we have watched with a keen interest to see the LNG plant in
Milford Haven get under way with this tiny little Peninsular called Qatar. We
have my parents Phyllis and David Evans visiting right now and they have
followed the news with great interest and have taken a cutting from our local
paper the ‘Gulf Times’ as a souvenir showing the Emir and his wife Sheikha
Moza and our Queen Elizabeth walking through the plant.
Qatar has come an amazingly long way in the 7 short years we have been here.
Whilst not on the scale of say Dubai, it is certainly giving the other Gulf
countries a run for their money. Today we visited the Pearl, an amazing water
front development that will match the Palm Tree Island in Dubai any day. With
money being no object – just let your imagination do the rest. The photo is my
parents outside the Pearl’s model village and a iew of the actual model of the
Pearl.
All the best,
Nadene and Nadeem Shameem and Phyllis and David Evans

Evans Familly
I am looking for any information on Thomas's parents. I can't find anything
pre-1850. I 'think' his father was John EVANS because he was the only EVANS in
Rowan County, NC with a male that fits in the correct age group but I need
documentation to confirm it.
Thomas married Sarah GREEN in 1845 in Rowan Co., NC. I have no information on
her parents either. Sarah was born in Rowan Co in 1821 and I she passed after
1880 I assume in MO. She is last seen on the 1880 census living with her
daughter, Sarah E.
Any of this sound familiar to anyone? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TALKING ABOUT WALES
by J.F.WAKE
WALKING STUNNING LOST RAILWAYS IN WALES'.
IS THIS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL short abandoned railway branch in Wales? I believe it
is. It has everything..............
In 'an area of outstanding natural beauty' in the Wye Valley.
The Forest walk along the track. (Try Spring or early Summer)
Branch starts from a lost 'tunnel' in the woods.
(Chepstow - Monmouth trackbed)
Within a stone's throw is the 1137ad TINTERN ABBEY iconic building.
Runs across a little bridge over the River Wye overlooking Tintern.
The end of the line is at a CADW 'heritage' site in a wooded valley.
The Industrial Site was started in the time of Henry V111.
Please have a look at this short video and see for yourself the beauty of WELSH
abandoned railway lines. Many are now official footpaths.
Another one which may match the TINTERN WIREWORKS BRANCH is the walk up the
trackbed along the MAWDDYCH ESTUARY at Dolgellau. Breathtaking but in a very
different way to Tintern.
Enjoy Tintern Wireworks Branch.

Colorado Welsh Society
The Colorado Welsh Society is pleased to present a program on the Colorado Welsh
Miners in Boulder and Weld Counties, Colorado. This program will be held on
July 11, 2009, at the College Hill Library, 3705 W. 112th Avenue, Westminster,
Colorado. The program is from 3:00 to 4:45 PM. Paul and Carol Lightsey will
present this program on
The advent of coal mining in Colorado began concurrently with the gold rush of
1858-59 that essentially started the European migration into Colorado. By 1870,
coal mining was flourishing and the primary economic product of Boulder and Weld
counties. By 1900, nearly 2000 Welsh had moved to Colorado; some directly from
Wales, but many emigrating first to the coal fields of Scranton and Wilkes-Barre
Pennsylvania first. This presentation will describe the early history of the
role of Welsh coal miners in Colorado and the “Lewis Home - Miner’s
Museum” in Lafayette, Colorado.
This program is free and open to the public. After the program please join
members of the Colorado Welsh Society at the Exchange Tavern, 11940 Bradburn

Our annual gathering at Desoto State Park this past Saturday May 9th 2009 went
off without a hitch save for a small rain shower early in the day. However, this
did not dampen our spirits & we soon had a fire built in the pavillion fireplace
to warm the rest of us. Needless to say the sun came backout shortly & the fire
was really not need but, was nice to look at, from a distance.
We were honored to have with us Gareth Phillips & Janet Baldwin of the Georgia
Welsh Society & our newest member Leisa Whitlow, the Haynes family, Robert,
Margie, John & Sam. My daughter Tara Price, Josh, Alex, Cara & Kylie Davis. My
mother Ruth Price, mother-in-law Grace McKay, my wife Sue & myself.
With the threat of bad weather many did not attend & this is fully
understandable. A feast was had & enjoyed by all & many thanks go out to each &
everyone of you for a job well done. Margie the banana pudding was excellent &
I`am sure there will be many request for it again at future events.
Later in the day some of us made the trek to the Welsh Caves & the Desoto
waterfall, this ended our day.
As soon as those who took pictures of the gathering send them to Janice Gattis
or myself they will be posted on our website
Tony Gattis is now at home recovering from his Febuary motorcycle accident so
please keep him & Janice both in your prayers. Also, for my daughter Tara who
twisted her ankle while at the park, cutting her vist short.

prize money again this year.
“We’re extremely pleased the competition has been going so well again and

“raw passion” in your writing. If you think you have what it takes or just
want to experience the fun of entering an international poetry competition that
is marketed in the Hay literature festival then why not log on to the website or

Dylan Thomas in Sydney
Lovers of Dylan Thomas in Sydney will enjoy a special day on Sunday 14 June
when they board a modern charabanc for the daytrip to Swansea (NSW) and back,
reliving the famous story of The Outing. We won't try to re-create the story in
its entirety - no-one will get drunk or break glasses and we will reach our
destination at the seaside. We regret that primus stoves will not be allowed on
our charabanc, but we will have wonderful DVDs of Dylan to show along the way
and perfect locations for dining, sipping a convivial drink and basking in
Dylan's descriptions of seashores and seabirds. There will be readings in caves
and on rock platforms and beaches reminiscent of Worm's Head and Rhossili. You
won't need a bow tie, but please don't leave your false teeth at home like Mr

I'm travelling from South Wales to the US in July and August to carry out some
research on how local people become involved in their community's regeneration
initiatives. I would like to arrange a few meetings with non profit
organisations who work in community development and neighbourhood renewal. I've
already made contact with organisations in Harrisburg and Lancaster County in

meeting with organisations from West Virginia, Ohio and Tennessee. I will be
travelling along with my wife and will be in the States between 26 July and 15

Here's hoping this meets with some success

Cardiganshire Casserole
Ingredients:
500g minced beef
1 onion, finely chopped
1 tbsp oil
200g chopped tomatoes
pinch of curry powder
pinch of dried sage
200ml beef stock
450g sliced potatoes
For the Covering:
300ml natural yoghurt
2 eggs
50g flour
generous pinch of mustard powder
salt and black pepper, to taste
80g grated cheese
1 tomato, sliced
Method:
Boil the potatoes in a large pan of water until almost cooked through (about 15
minutes) then take off the heat and drain. Meanwhile, add the oil to a casserole
dish that's suitable for the oven and use to fry the onions until soft (about 5
minutes). Now add the meat and fry until browned before adding the tomatoes and
frying until they begin to soften (about 8 minutes). Add the remaining
ingredients (apart from the tomatoes) and bring the mixture to a boil before
transferring to a bowl to cool.
Layer the meat mixture and the potatoes in a casserole dish before finishing
with a neat layer of overlapping potatoes. Cover with a lid and transfer to an
oven pre-heated to 170°C and bake for an hour.
In the meantime, beat together the yoghurt, flour, mustard powder and sesonings
before pouring over the contents of the casserole. Arrange the sliced tomatoes
on top then scatter the grated cheese over everything. Return the dish to the
oven (uncovered) and bake for 30 minutes, or until the top of the dish is golden
brown.
Serve with carrots and garden peas.
