Description

This is an INVITATION ONLY group for Jayne to share stories from her travels and time living abroad with close friends and family. The public version of this information, including traveling tips for women, is available from http://www.coyotecommunications.com/travel/ IMPORTANT NOTICE THAT WILL REMAIN HERE UNTIL THINGS CHANGES: I use many of Yahoo's tools (YahooGroups, YahooMail & Flickr), thereby contributing a great deal to the company's resources and, as a result, its bottom line. I am DEEPLY disturbed that Yahoo has admitted to providing Chinese authorities with information that led to the arrest and imprisonment of journalist Shi Tao; he is now serving a 10-year prison sentence for sending an email that included information on the Tiananmen Square massacre. Shi Tao sent the email using his Yahoo account. Chinese authorities accused him of "illegally providing state secrets to foreign entities." And, sadly, Shi Tao's case isn't the only one where Yahoo has helped a government imprison someone for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression, a right entrenched in international law and the Chinese Constitution. Yahoo has signed China's Public Pledge on Self-Discipline for the Internet Industry, effectively agreeing to implement China’s draconian system of censorship and control. Put simply: Yahoo is contributing to human rights violations. Where will Yahoo do this next? In the Middle East? In the USA? IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY. Yahoo has the ability and choice not to contribute to human rights violations in the pursuit of new and lucrative markets. For information on action you can take to pressure Yahoo to stop this unethical, inhumane behavior, see this Amnesty International site: http://www.amnesty.org/en/campaigns/irrepressible-info
