Mount Abu 61

The social motivation for constructing temples in medieval times, the 9th and 15th centuries saw building of the majority of important Jain temples. This period forms the golden age of temple construction all over India. There is an Indian belief, from times immemorial, in the merit of erecting, repairing or restoring a temple. The ruler was expected to undertake this as a religious and special task. In the value of patriarchal duty, a king expected to take care of the religious needs of all his flock comprising different religious groups, irrespective of his own religion. Particularly during the middle ages, the intense religious favour of the kings encouraged their ministers, even rich merchants, to act as patrons and donors. The growing affluence of large sections of the population led to a ‘democratisation’ of temple donations to a degree never before witnessed.

At the beginning of the second millennium, the Solanki dynasty of Gujarat ruled over the west coast of northern India. The Parmars of Mt. Abu were the tribute paying vassals of the Solankis. One of the Solanki ministers, Vimala Shah, an underling of King Bhimdeo (or Bhima Deva), was dispatched to the city of Chandravati to quell the rebellion in a princely state. At the end of his mission, he asked a Jain monk how he could atone for the bloodshed. The monk informed him that wilful killing could not be atoned. However, he could earn good virtue by constructing a temple at Mt. Abu.

Vimala Vasahi Temple ground plan
The temple, which is actually quite small, has a base measuring 33 x 14 m. It stands in the middle of a courtyard, surrounded by a double arcade of pillars and an ambulatory lined by devakulikas or subsidiary shrines. The bright light, which overwhelms the visitor on entering the temple, is due to the whiteness of the marble and the light filtered through the courtyard. Unlike Hindu architecture, the Jain shrines are never shrouded in mystical semi-darkness since the focus is on the brightness and clarity of the soul and on knowledge.

The dance pavilion construction in 1147-1149 and is the most exquisite structure in the temple complex. As the interior had to be free of supporting pillars, a shikhara tower was not possible due to its heavy weight. Instead, a wide vaulted dome with a diameter of 6.6 m is covering the hall. This is the largest existing example of such a construction during the Solanki period. However, it still remains unknown how the static engineering of the temple is working since no tests have been made so far. Probably a ring beam runs through each of the eleven concentric stone rings of the dome and this absorbs the horizontal thrust.

The tourist cannot proceed beyond this point. However, from here, through the gudha mandapa, the Sanctum Sanctorum and the bright statue of the first Tirthankara are visible. The entrance to the cell is flanked by two standing Parsva statues standing erect, and by relief of monks and nuns. The idol of Adinatha or Rishabhanatha deliberately made to appear impersonal and not human. Tirthankaras are carved preferably in alabaster or in any translucent stone in order to indicate the spirituality of a body, which has been liberated from all earthly shackles and is thus no longer a part of this world. The eyes stare into the transcendental sphere of the next world. Even the odour and breath are not comparable with that of human beings.

The image of Goddess Chakrasuri is three-dimensional and femininely rounded (no. 5 in the plan). Chakrasuri is the esoteric consort of Vishnu; she holds in her six arms, symbols, which also coincide with Jain concepts and philosophy. For example, the bow symbolises the ego and the arrow the senses, which bind humankind to the material world; the round form of the discus personifies the soul, the sceptre the power of knowledge, the thunderbolt spiritual power and with the noose, Chakrasuri captures the restless spirit of the faithful.

The Luna Vasahi Temple is situated a little above the Vimala Shah Temple. This temple was constructed by two brothers, Tejapala and Vastupala, who are perhaps the greatest builders of all time in Indian architectural history. They were the ministers of King Viradhavala. Apart from the Luna Vasahi Temple at Mt. Abu, the brothers also constructed numerous shrines; of these, only the Neminatha Temple of Girnar remains.

The shrine, measuring 52 x 28.5 m, is a close approximation of its model, although it faces west and is the exact reverse of the Vimala Vasahi Temple, yet, the sequence of the structural parts is the same as in the Vimala Vasahi Temple. Consequently, a description highlighting the differences between the two temples will suffice here. The T-shaped temple stands in a courtyard, surrounded by fifty-two devakulikas screened by a double row of colonnades. Only in the north and south does a cell project a little out of the closed ground plan. At the back, there are no shrines, only an enclosed hall with very old jali work, i.e., a latticed wall with ornamental tracery. It contains the shockingly mutilated statues of the founders and their families.

20 Temple of Ranakpur

The Adinatha Temple of Ranakpur is also named Dharna Vihara temple after its builder. The impression it conveys is very different from that of the Dilwara temples. In the Dilwara temples, the atmosphere is one of peace and seclusion; this engendered by the smallness of the temples as well as by the illusion of their being hidden and concealed. In comparison, the temple at Ranakpur is grandiose and majestic, it has soaring shikhara towers and domes visible from a great distance.

The builder of the shrine, Dharna Shah belonged to a Rajasthani Jain family that held the title of Sanghapati (one who has borne the costs of the community pilgrimage). The name Shah or Sah indicates that he accumulated his wealth as a banker or as a merchant.

According to Jain tradition, Dharna Shah gained the confidence of the king and was appointed minister. At the age of thirty-two years, however, greatly influenced by the sermons of the monk Shri Somasundara Suriji, he retired from the world to practise celibacy. In a dream, he saw a marvellous heavenly vehicle, the nalini-gulm-vimana (lotus flight), which impressed him so much that he suggested his idea to the king that he wanted to construct a temple in this shape. The Rana agreed and donated land for the temple and township.

We stepped out, and the view of the road reminded old friends to Karuna, the family who had hosted her seven years ago. She even remembered the direction we had to go, and after some minutes, we were in front of ‘Darga Haveli’, her hosts’ beautiful family seat, which Aparigraha admired already in the morning, when Yuvacharyashree went for alms there.

When we left Darga Haveli, our eyes got breath-taking impressions, what beauty of a light! How bright are the colours in StarCity and how friendly people! We retraced how we would have felt to arrive in StarCity after having travelled in the desert on a camel chariot for some days – the meaning of the word oasis had a deep impact on us this late afternoon in Taranagar.

In the evening, we planned to go for Darshan of Sadhvi Pramukha. Sadhvi Pramukhaji and the Sadhvishrees traditionally are accommodated separately from H.H., Yuvacharyashree and the Munishrees in a short walking distance, but we ignored the location. Therefore, we went to Oswal Bhawan to ask where to go and fortunately met Munishree Kumar Shramanji who gave the latest details concerning start of Ahimsa Yatra to us for next morning.

Ahimsa Yatra! These two words woke us up without alarm. We were happy to join Ahimsa Yatra for some days and eager to know what it is like to follow H.H. Acharya Mahaprajna on his march for non-violence. We supposed not to be the only ones, were nevertheless more than astonished to watch which different activities were linked to it.

Ground plan of the Adinatha Temple
The Adinatha temple conceived of as a chatur-mukha-prasada, i.e., the idol faces all four cardinal directions. This necessitates a cell (garbha griha, no. 1 in the plan) with four doorways. The entire ground plan, which is almost a square, derives from this basic conception.
The Sanctum is surrounded by halls, which are known as either the sabha mandapa (assembly halls) or ranga mandapa (dance halls, no. 2 in the plan). The one on the western side is prominent due to its size in the axis of the main entrance. As a result, the cell is placed a little to the east; this accounts for the ground plan not being a perfect square. The central area of the temple is in the form of a crucifix and encircled by an open rectangular courtyard (no. 3 in the plan); in comparison with older Jain temples, the courtyard here does not have much of the prominence.

Abstract Thinking - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Abstract Thinking [17.02] Bhavana Of Indifference - How to Create A State Of Indifference
25.02.2007
A question was raised, How to bring about indifference? I said: "Indifference results from the control of the senses. The man, who has established control over the senses, becomes indifferent, objective and impersonal. When the feeling of like and dislike is absent from the mind, matter is looked upon as mere matter, and a living being as a living being. We may say that we are attached to all that is good and are averse to all that is evil but this is an illusion. As a matter of fact, a thing appears to us to be good and interesting because we are attached to it; another thing appears to us to be evil and uninteresting because of our aversion to it.

Abstract Thinking [17.03] Bhavana Of Indifference - Consummation Of Discretion - Indifference (Objectivity?)
26.02.2007
The first fruit of a glimpse of the self is - discretion. It forms the preliminary groundwork for the awakening of consciousness and the consummation of discretion is - indifference, which forms the second foundation for the awakening of consciousness.

Abstract Thinking [17.03] Bhavana Of Indifference - Seeing Itself is Objectivity
27.02.2007
Being established in the middle path, 'holy' indifference, objectivity, is a form of preksha (feeing') itself. He, who sees, keeps equanimous. He is not attached to what is pleasant, nor averse to what is unpleasant. He is indifferent to both the pleasant and the unpleasant - looks at them closely and is thus able to keep his poise, established, in the middle, not running to extremes, objective. Indifference or objectivity cannot be separated from preksha. The man who is indifferent to this great world, sees it from near, goes about merrily with all his senses awake.

Abstract Thinking [17.05] Bhavana Of Indifference - Second Stage Of Equanimity - Indifference
28.02.2007
Equability, equanimity, means indifference (to pleasure or pain, the pleasant and the unpleasant, etc.). Keep steadfast, unmoved. Do not lean to any one-ism of belief. Something pleasant or unpleasant is always happening in the world. Sometimes, what we wish for comes to pass and at other times, things happen contrary to our wishes. Sometimes the desirable, what you want, transpires, sometimes, the unwanted comes off. If, with all this, the wheel of our mind also goes on revolving, it creates so many problems that in the end, there is left no option but to commit suicide. When something wished for happens, a man is very much elated; when something unwelcome transpires, he is greatly perplexed. At times, he comes to look upon suicide as the only means of getting rid of the terrible complications in which he finds himself caught.

Abstract Thinking [17.06] Bhavana Of Indifference - Fruit Of Noble Indifference - Mental Health
01.03.2007
There is a criterion of mental health. A person, whose mind is healthy, conducts himself well towards those who do him good, and also towards those who do him ill. He is good for both the well-intentioned and the evil-minded. That the person confronting one is sick is no reason why one should become sick oneself. Should one start vomiting oneself it one sees another person vomiting? A person, who possesses a healthy mind, cannot do so. Only that person indulges in hostile conduct, whose mind is weak, sick. Those who coined the maxim, 'Tit for tat", were mentally unhealthy. Had they been healthy, such maxims would not have come into vogue. If the person confronting you is mentally unhealthy, it is all the more reason that you should present before him in yourself an example of good health and provide him with an opportunity to distinguish for himself the difference between a sick and a healthy mind.

Abstract Thinking [18.01] Anupreksha Of Dutifulness
02.03.2007
Dedication to duty is the inspiring power behind good conduct. The man, who is alive to his obligations, saves himself from undesirable action. Whenever he finds himself caught in remissness, his sense of duty becomes his saviour, and he is strongly resolved to follow the true path.

Anekant : The Third Eye - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Anekanta : The Third Eye 2.10 Mutual Connection - Anekanta Is Life's Philosophy
27.02.2007
Nothing is independent. Everything is connected. Always a difference or always a similarity, always opposition or always synchronization, always one's own or always somebody else's... these are all just illusions, not reality. If we want to live in reality then we have to develop the anekantic view in our practical life. The biggest mistake is that we have mistaken anekanta for philosophy. That only in discussions of truth does one use anekanta. This is a mistaken belief. That explanation which does not apply to real life does not apply to the quest for truth either. Life is also a truth. It is a great truth and all explanations derive from it. All principles, streams of thought and arguments originate from it. No truth or discussion can be located away from life.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 2.11 Mutual Connection - Dualism And Non-Dualism
01.03.2007
There is mutual connection between everything. Nothing is totally independent. Though from the outside things may look separate, from inside they are all inter-connected. We do not know the unity underlying the diversity. Similarly we do not know the multiplicity that lies beneath unity. Our perceptions are divided. Therefore it is that even in philosophy if non-dualism developed so did dualism along with it.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 2.12 Mutual Connection - Transcendental and Pragmatic (Nischay and Vyavahar)
03.03.2007
Anekanta has defined both the subtle and the gross and presented their respective perspectives. The two perspectives are the nischay naya or the transcendental perspective and the vyavahar naya or the pragmatic perspective. To know the subtle truths the nischay naya helps and to know the gross truths, vyavahara nayq helps.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [4.11] Raison d'etre of Preksa Dhyana - Lesya Dhyana - Self-Awareness and Self-Realization
25.02.2007
Modern physics has already made many discoveries about matter and still continues to do so. It has been able to penetrate the atom and to analyse the structure of the atomic nucleus. But the object of its quest is the ultimate particle of matter and not the conscious reality - the psyche of the soul. Physics, in its quest, employs scientific equipments - apparatus and instruments which are themselves made from matter. Hence, it can have access only to matter. The spiritual existence could never enter the range of their investigation and become the object of their quest. That is why science has not, so far, positively accepted the separate existence of soul.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [4.12] Raison d'etre of Preksa Dhyana - Lesya Dhyana - Developing Insight
01.03.2007
Insight, i.e. the ability to see one's own self, means freedom from the emotional experience of joy and sorrow. Until and unless one frees oneself from this tinted outlook, one cannot realise the truth. One may become very learned, an erudite scholar, or may acquire proficiency in theoretical philosophy, but one cannot obtain insight.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [4.13] Raison d'etre of Preksa Dhyana - Lesya Dhyana - Self-realisation by Direct Experience
03.03.2007
Is Ultimate Reality consciousness or matter or both? Recent research in sub-atomic physics has answered many questions regarding the structure of matter. But as regards consciousness, there is still much ignorance not only among scientists but also among spiritualists.
Spiritualists tend to solve the riddle of conscious existence on the basis of scriptural knowledge. They base their solutions on the precision of logical processes. They think they can realise the nature of consciousness through philosophical literature. What a pitiable paradox that on the one hand the nature of consciousness is propounded emphatically to be beyond logic, literature and language, while on the other hand, they want to realise the nature of consciousness through direct personal experience. Without experience, no one can comprehend it.

The Quest For Truth - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
The Quest For Truth - 03.03 - Man And Society (3)
26.02.2007
Jain philosophy does not give the rule for social organization nor does it give the direction for desire and acquisition of wealth. It does not give a vision for a life as a whole and that is why it is incomplete. This argument has been established and yet is not beyond contention. In Jain philosophy the discussion about moksha dominates (moksha dharma). The main objective of a philosophy of moksha is to discuss dharma.

The Quest For Truth - 03.04 - Man And Society (4)
28.02.2007
Dharma being beyond emotions cannot be manifested. It relates to the soul. But since it is a person's attribute, it is also manifested. Morality is an attribute of man and so it is manifested but it is towards others and so it is social. It is social but not different from the social code of conduct. Social conduct is framed with respect to space, time, changing of different societies and their requirements. Morality does not change with space and time; it is the same everywhere and is influenced by dharma.

The Quest For Truth - 03.05 - Man And Society (5)
02.03.2007
Mahavira announced that all men are one. Casteism, disgust and untouchability are all elements of violence. There is no place for them in the dharma of ahimsa. Mahavira gave three characteristics of dharma-non-violence (ahimsa), restraint (sayam) and penance (tap). All three are related to the soul (atma) and the individual. The character evolved on the basis of these three factors is of high moral calibre. Consciousness devoid of attachment and aversion is ahimsa. It is the spiritual form of dharma.

Jainismus und die Tempel von Mount Abu und Ranakpur von Dix, Clemont & Surana
Jainismus und die Tempel von Mount Abu und Ranakpur - 12
25.02.2007

Dear Readers, people dream. In fact all of us dream. Majority of our dreams take place when we are asleep. It is difficult to interpret those dreams and generally speaking most of such dreams are valueless. Then there are dreams, which we see when we are awake. Such types of dreams are also equally valueless – unless they are followed up with required action, hard work and all other ingredients, which are necessary to bring the dreams to fructification.

HereNow4U - Living Jainism Tour 2006 - 05.01 From Taranagar to Ladnun
16.03.2007
We started about 06:30. In and outside Taranagar it was foggy and we hardly could recognise the landscape. People and animals were shivering, apparently because they were unfamiliar with mist. After one and a half hour journey, we stopped at a tea stand and ate some biscuits. When we got back to the car, the first sunrays came out and burned bright holes into the clouds.

Excursus: The Life of Parsva
As mentioned earlier in the paragraph on Parsva in the chapter on Jainism, in all the previous incarnations of the Tirthankara there was in contrast to him a hostile and evil brother who personified the darker side of human existence: selfishness and a craving for power.

Jainism And The Temples Of Mount Abu And Ranakpur - 24
13.03.2007
Parsva was reborn as an elephant as he had been conscious of regretting death in his previous life. For a long time, he roamed in the forest raging wildly, frightened pious ascetics, until he one day came face to face with his former king. The king had renounced the world and he immediately recognised in the elephant his former minister. He succeeded in calming the elephant and imparted religious instruction to him.

Subsequent cycles of birth are only as human being and god, since in the very next incarnation, as Prince Agnivega, he for the first time renounced the world and becomes an ascetic, i.e. he had already achieved a higher level of knowledge. This time too his brother, now reborn as a poisonous snake, killed him. Parsva rose to a higher sphere of divinity, whereas Kamatha fell into a lower one of hell.

Jainism And The Temples Of Mount Abu And Ranakpur - 26
15.03.2007
The next time Parsva renounced his throne when he discovered his first grey hair. As an ascetic, he gained such supernatural powers that all around him, land and living beings enjoyed happiness and harmony. As a result, when Kamatha now killed him, he was able to achieve the highest divine form of an Indra.

At sixteen, Parsva undertook the greatest sacrifice and meditated standing in the forest. He was surrounded by an aura of peace. His brother, reborn as a low-level god due to the sustained asceticism, discovered him there and attacked him with all the supernatural powers at his disposal. However, a pair of snakes, the reincarnation of the two killed earlier by Kamatha, spread a gigantic hood over him as protection. This explains why Parsva represented with gigantic snake hood.

The later history of Ranakpur
During the reign of Aurangzeb (1658-1707), Muslim armies advanced through Mewar and pillaged Ranakpur. In later centuries, famines decimated the population in the surrounding area. The temple, which in parts had collapsed, was abandoned and for a time it became a hideout for gangs of robbers.

Abstract Thinking - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Abstract Thinking [18.05.3] Anupreksha Of Dutifulness - Awareness Of Duty In The Youth (3)
11.03.2007
Today's youth has no love of study. I recognize that the implementation of an idea requires first of all intellectual maturity. With an increase in intellectual capacity, come many other things. In today's world, intellectual development has almost touched the ultimate limit. Every day, new dimensions are being opened. There has been much research and deep study on the commonest subjects.

Abstract Thinking [18.05.4] Anupreksha Of Dutifulness - Awareness Of Duty In The Youth (4)
12.03.2007
A great deal of discussions on the manifest and the unmanifest is to be found in Indian philosophy. The unmanifest lies below, hidden. The manifest lies before us, apparent. But without the unmanifest, there can be no manifestation. Without the unmanifest, which serves as its foundation, the manifest can find no expression. Manifestation can take place on the basis of knowledge, only when it is allied with action. There is no fruition of action because our knowledge lacks depth. With depth of knowledge, action has an opportunity to flower. A youth should progress in the direction of studies and his studies should be very comprehensive. I believe that the deep study of metaphysics found in Jainism, would be rarely met with elsewhere. Bhagwati sutra is the living proof thereof. I am not saying it merely because I am a Jain; I have arrived at this conclusion after making a comparative study of all the philosophies.

Abstract Thinking [18.06] Anupreksha Of Dutifulness - A Woman's Sense of Duty
14.03.2007
At the very outset, we must determine what kind of society we wish to create. After that, we must first of all enlighten our women and imbue them with a vision as to what kind of sons they would produce. This would be something really beneficial. If the mother's will-power is strong, she gets the kind of son she has visualized. Behind the power of all the great men of the world, lies a mother's strong determination. A mother, who forms good resolutions before or after conception, performs good deeds, reads good literature, dreams good dreams-her son turns out to be powerful. On the other hand, a mother who suffers from inferiority complex, is afflicted with evil thought, dreams evil dreams- her son Will never grow to be really great. More often he is born not only a coward, but crippled, too.

Abstract Thinking [18.07] Anupreksha Of Dutifulness - Original Thinking
16.03.2007
We should not be attached to the old. We are living in the twentieth century today, bur scriptures, our books, our rules of conduct were made 4-5 thousand years ago. Since then there have occurred changes of time and space, our capacity for thought has increased, many scientific achievements have come up, new books have been written. If we shut our eyes to all these developments and take our present decisions only on the basis of what was done in the past - this one-sided and partial approach, can only lead us to destitution. I think the reason for India's backwardness in many spheres is that she has ceased to take initiative in the field of science and other disciplines. The pre-Mahabharata age was the age of India's great achievements. It was the age of the opening of new dimensions of thought. But, it seems to me for the last two thousand years the door has been quite shut on original thinking.

Anekant : The Third Eye - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Anekanta : The Third Eye 3.02 Relativity - The Weakness Of Language
11.03.2007
Each object has many attributes. In an atom itself there are many attributes and that, too, opposing pairs of them. To explain infinite attributes at the same time is not humanly possible. Through words, only one attribute or one mode of the object can be described in a said moment. The rest remains infinite. If then we accept one mode as the truth then the infinite unsaid ones will be falsified. Infinite truths get cancelled and only one is accepted. If this is accepted as the whole truth then it is a misconception.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 3.03 Relativity - The New Meaning Of The Word Syaad
13.03.2007
Only the enlightened, God or the Omnipotent knows the infinite truth, but even they or He does not have the capacity to be able to express its myriad dimensions in words. It is impossible. A great man, an intellectual, can enumerate some ten or twenty or even fifty aspects. None of us can ever articulate the entire truth. When we accept the few aspects we see as the entire truth and negate any other possibilities, then we are actually moving away from truth itself instead of towards it. It is in this context that anekanta gives a suggestion. Anekanta says that you can escape travelling towards untruth if you take the help of the word syaad. Prefix all that you say with syaad and that will save you from untruth. The essence of the meaning of syaad is, "I am unable to express the whole truth and so present one aspect or mode of truth."

Anekanta : The Third Eye 3.04 Relativity - Absolute and Relative
15.03.2007
Let us not talk of absolute truth. We should accept the relativity of truth and that truth can never be absolute. Where there is absolute truth, there can be no discussion about the relative and the absolute. There languages cease. Only truth remains, no relativity or absolutism. That is why Bhagvan Mahavir has said, "Where there is indeed (real) truth, from there language returns. Neither intellect, nor thoughts nor even the mind goes there. All of them return. They are not able to reach there. All our alternatives stand on language and the intellect. The one who accepts the reign of language, of the mind, the intellect and thoughts, he has actually accepted the invitation of untruth."

Anekanta : The Third Eye 3.05 Relativity - The Primary Is Only One
17.03.2007
One of the most dominant rules of this world is that the primary is always one, never two otherwise problems crop up.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [00.01] Introduction
08.03.2007
The question of health is related to life. It is not the question that concerns any particular community or sect. For Bhagvan Mahavira, the soul was of the highest importance while the body was of secondary importance. For him, the body which cooperated in the development of the soul was of value. The body which created obstacle in the upliftment of the soul was worthless. The chetana or consciousness which revolves round the ahimsha from the beginning till the end can attribute value only to that health which has the innate memory of the soul in its every pore.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [00.02] From The Editor
Muni Dhananjaya Kumar
08.03.2007
The most significant question of life - How to keep the healthy body - Healthy thoughts, healthy mind - Solve the intricate problem of health - Have health as companion - For all times.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [01.01] Existence And Health - (Astitva and Svasthya)
09.03.2007
Man has always cherished the dream of attaining the state of arogya (health), bodhi (enlightenment) and samadhi (bliss). Man's foremost desire is to be healthy. Desire to be healthy has always found expression in Sanskrit literature and it has been regarded as the basis of success in general. A number of diverse systems relating to health and medical treatment have come into vogue. Mahavira's ideology is neither directly related to medical science nor to the science of health. But compartmentalization of knowledge is never acceptable to the Non-absolutism philosophy. In fact, knowledge is relative.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [01.02] Existence And Health - The Body (Sharira)
09.03.2007
When we apply the non-absolutism, one aspect may be of secondary importance and the other may be of primary importance. But we cannot consider them as entirely different.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [01.03] Existence And Health - The Senses (Indriya)
09.03.2007
The senses are the second constituent of human existence. Even if the body is healthy, the senses may be unhealthy. The senses will get diseased if they are overused. On the other hand, the senses will become useless if they are not used..

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [01.04] Existence And Health - Respiration (Shvasa)
09.03.2007
Respiration is the third component of human existence. It affects everyone. There is a mention of delhi deepak nyaya in Nyaya Shastra (Jurisprudence). It means that the lamp kept on the doorsill throws its light in the interior as well as on the exterior. The breath affects the body and the senses both. It also affects the mind and the emotions. The breath is the main factor that affects everything.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [01.05] Existence And Health - Vital Energy (Prana)
10.03.2007
The fourth component of existence is the vital energy. It is fundamental to existence.
The vital energy is the basis of the life of a human being or any living being.
In prekshadhyan, when perception of breathing is practised, the instruction is to perceive the breath and perceive the vital energy along with the breath.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [01.06] Existence And Health - Vital Energy And Health (Prana and Svasthya)
11.03.2007
The practice of breathing of vital energy is very important for human existence. Since health is closely related to the equilibrium of the vital energy it is important to maintain the vital energy in the proper state.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [01.07] Existence And Health - Mind (Mana)
12.03.2007
The fifth component of human existence is the mind. The mind is everything and yet it is nothing. There is no permanent existence of mind. When the mind is in existence, it is everything. It is nothing if we do not make use of it. The mind is not something permanent like the enduring emotions. The mind is created and it also vanishes. We can create the mind any time we wish, and also give it rest whenever we want. The mind has several states. The mind can be fickle, restless and it can concentrate. This is the samanska (Sanskar) state. But when there is the mind, lots of things happen. Therefore, health is related to the mind. If the mind is healthy, then the body is healthy too. If the mind becomes unhealthy, then the body becomes unhealthy too.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [01.08] Existence And Health - Emotion (Bhava)
13.03.2007
The sixth component of human existence is the emotion. The body is paudgalik; sense structure and breath are paudgalik. The mind and the vital energy too are related with paudgala. The emotion is related to soul or consciousness. Our emotions come from within. They have no relation with outside. The world of emotions is the internal world. It acts like a key for health. Why does the mind have bad thoughts? Why does it have good thoughts? Why does it absorb desirable components of matter? Why does it absorb undesirable components of matter? What regulates and governs the mind? It is emotion that regulates the functioning of the mind.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [01.09] Existence And Health - Language (Bhasha)
14.03.2007
The seventh component of existence is the bhasha, which is very closely related to health. Vibrations of sound are linked to our health. When a person is angry, his lips would flutter when he speaks, his body would quiver, his speech would be unsteady. The emotion influences the language to a very great extent. When a person utters powerful words, their sounds would influence the emotion and also the mind. On this basis, the sound therapy was developed.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [02.01] Psyche, Mind And Health
15.03.2007
Mahavira, who possessed excellent health, had a very strong body with Vajra rishabhanaracha Smhanana. Due to his extremely sturdy and healthy body, he was able to face so many hardships, problems and calamities. One can face many difficult situations if the body is strong and healthy and one's consciousness also functions well.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [02.02] Psyche, Mind And Health - Many Facets Of Chitta
16.03.2007
Bhagvan Mahavira said, "This man's chitta has many facets, which is not one but many. If we define the many facets of the chitta, they would be four...

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [02.03] Psyche, Mind And Health - Concept Of C.G.Jung
17.03.2007
Freud confined the chitta to the mind, but Jung regarded the mind and the chitta as divided into two. Freud conceived of the mind as conscious and sub-conscious. Jung add the concept of two sections of the mind: conscious and unconscious; the two together as a unit form the chitta. Jung has analysed the chitta very nicely. There was a very great learned scholar named Bhavanishankar Upadhyaya at Udaipur. He wrote a book about Jung called The Analytical Psychology of Karl Gustav Jung. As a matter of fact, while considering in detail Jung's concept, it seems that he had reached very close to the chitta.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [4.17] Raison d'etre of Preksa Dhyana - Contemplation - Knowledge Must Replace Ignorance
11.03.2007
The essence of contemplative meditation is, first, to get rid of one's traditional belief and superstitions and then perceive and experience the principles of eternal truth. The raison d'etre of contemplation (anupreksa) in the system of Preksa Dhyana is to abolish the myths, legends and superstitious beliefs and to realize and accept what is really true. Thus the main objective of contemplative meditation is to replace ignorance and superstitions by knowledge and wisdom. It is a process of realizing the truth and adhering to it.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [5.01] Technique - Preparation For The Practice Of Preksa
15.03.2007
For a successful practice of meditation, steadiness of the body is essential. Posture, therefore, is an important feature of the exercise. The practitioner must remain motionless, quiet, and alert for the duration of the exercise. Obviously, therefore, a posture which produces any kind of distracting discomfort is ruled out. Strain or discomfort must be avoided during the session. An advanced practitioner may adopt a standing posture. In exceptional condition a recumbent posture may also be used. A sitting posture is most convenient for learners and novices, and is most commonly adopted.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [5.02] Technique - Preparation - Standing Posture

An armless chair is to be used. Keep your back and neck in a straight line without the back rest.
There should be no stiffness.
Keep your feet parallel as in the standing posture.
Assume one of the two mudras given below.

The Quest For Truth - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
The Quest For Truth - 05.01 - The Value Of The Independence Of Man (1)
12.03.2007
If this world were advaitic (monistic) - there would be only one reality. Then there would be no discussion on independence and dependence. This world has many realities. They influence each other. They have a cause and effect relationship also. Under such circumstances, a discussion on dependence and independence becomes necessary. The second aspect is that every aspect of reality is changeable. Change is intrinsic to reality. Change occurs at every instant of time. Time, defined by the sun and the moon, is not uniform. The time that is intrinsic to reality and becomes the stimulus for change is multidimensional. It is an internal mode of reality.

The Quest For Truth - 05.02 - The Value Of The Independence Of Man (2)
14.03.2007
Western philosophers have deliberated a great deal on the issue of governance and independence. Philosophers like Aristotle, Locke and Mill and others have established individual freedom as the base for independent governance. On the other hand philosophers like Plato, Machiavelli, Hegel and Bach and others have given greater importance to independence in governance.

The Quest For Truth - 05.03 - The Value Of The Independence Of Man (3)
16.03.2007
As man's knowledge grows, his capacity for work increases. In the early stages of creation, man's area of knowledge was still not developed. The tools for acquiring knowledge were also limited and so the resultant human exertion was less. In comparison to stone-age, man's knowledge has indeed grown in the atomic age. His tools are strong and the capacity for work has also increased tremendously. The primitive man was solely dependent on nature. If it rained, crops would grow, as much as an acre of land could grow; as much time as was required to ripen it, so much time it would take. Today's man is not dependent on all this. Having developed different means of irrigation he has removed his dependency on the rains. Having developed fertilizers man has increased the per acre yield and through efficient tools is also trying to reduce the time for ripening of crops.

Exkurs: Die Leben Parshvas

Maryada Mahotsav - 143rd - [13] Monday’s Mixed Masala
R.K. Bengani
22.03.2007
Dear Readers, by now it is quite clear that why Maryada Mahotsav is not a mere ‘utsav’ (festival) but a Mahotsav (grand festival). The nature, importance, values, number of programs etc are some the factors that make it a mahotsav. Clearly, several side programs also take place during all these days of festivities. It is really difficult to write separates notes on each event. But it is equally difficult not to share what I have seen/experienced – especially when the readers are such wonderful people like you. So a way out is a Monday’s (22nd Jan 2007) Mixed Masala Bag...

Maryada Mahotsav - 143rd - [14] Day 2 - “Acharya Padarohan Samaroh” (Accession Day) - Part 1
R.K. Bengani
23.03.2007
Wednesday the 24h January 2007 was 13th accession day of Acharyashri Mahaprajnaji. Acharya is also commonly referred as Guru. The importance of a guru cannot be denied if one were to excel in any field in life. It is more so in the field of spiritual/religious practices. Gu denotes darkness and ru means block/withhold. So a spiritual guru is essentially a person who blocks/withholds the darkness (lack of knowledge) and brings out the light (of knowledge) in the disciple’s life.

Only few people enjoy the present and are neither preoccupied with remembrances of the past, nor imaginations of the future. Apparently, one has to live the life of a saint to dwell in and enjoy the present.

Since 58 years, Sadhvis and Samanis are prepared for their spiritual task in Mumukshu Training Centre Ladnun. It was then, when Acharya Tulsi started to teach them and gave the inspiration for that institution, as he and his predecessor Acharya Mahaprajna held and hold the view that without education initiation is incomplete. Acharya Mahaprajna had deputed Samani Malli Pragyaji to take care for the Mumukshus for one year.

Spiritual Therapy For Heart Trouble
Samani Malli Pragya
23.03.2007
The heart is more important than the brain. It is a vital organ of our body. It acts as a bridge between the fundamental unit, cell and other systems of the body. Every organ of the body needs energy for function, which gets ready in the cell due to the oxidation of the food. Either the heart or the circulatory system takes in glucose from the digestive system and oxygen from the respiratory system, and then reaches the cells, and, moreover, helps us get energy for functioning.

Abstract Thinking - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Abstract Thinking [18.08] Anupreksha Of Dutifulness - Dedication To Duty
18.03.2007
The first condition of dutifulness is - devotion and wakefulness. A person, who is devoted to the observance of duty, will never be remiss, do anything unjust or become a social parasite. One reason for the lack of dutifulness is the absence of love for the nation. If one's heart is filled with lofty patriotism, no room is left for remissness or negligence to arise. A person has also a duty to his family and to the development of his own character.

Abstract Thinking [19.01] Anupreksha Of Self-Reliance
20.03.2007
Meditation is the ultimate object of human pursuit until this is distinctly seen; no good can result for the individual, the society or the country. In the successful completion of any work, clarity of vision is a point, which no person can overlook if he wants to make any progress. Energy accumulates through meditation and with this accumulated energy individuality is formed.

Abstract Thinking [19.02] Anupreksha Of Self-Reliance - Self-Dependence And Effort
22.03.2007
The second flowering of our individual life is self-dependence. But where is self-dependence to be found? On the contrary, we find dependence upon another increasing day by day. You may have heard of an “amarbel" ('the ever-green creeper'). Although its name sounds so pleasant, it is a very dangerous creeper. The plant, upon which it starts growing, is as good as finished. It is not self-sufficient; it seeks support outside itself. And the most remarkable thing about it is that it starts consuming the very plant, which serves as its support.

Abstract Thinking [19.03] Anupreksha Of Self-Reliance - Man And Manliness
24.03.2007
Man himself is the creator of his joy and sorrow. He himself is the architect of his fate.
The ruler is not the deity. He is not the incarnation of god. He is a man. Do not call him a god, simply as a prosperous person.
A book is created by a man. First the man, then the book. No book is divine.
The Order of the Universe is self-directed through the combination or mutual inter-action of eternal substances. It is not conducted by some omnipotent entity.

Anekant : The Third Eye - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Anekanta : The Third Eye 3.06 Relativity - Relativity Is A Great Science
19.03.2007
The word syaad informs us of relativity. Without it we cannot know the truth nor can it be explained. This truth had been propounded two thousand five hundred years ago but our philosophers could not hold on to it. We should confer monkhood on the contemporary scientist who proved that without relativity truth cannot be explained. He got idea the of relativity so adroitly that today the scientific world looks towards it for all explanations. All science and scientific beliefs that developed before the idea of relativity now stand annulled.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 3.07 Relativity - The Method Of Thinking And Its Many Pictures
21.03.2007
In the Jain agamas there are five kinds of knowledge explained. Among them the fourth is manahaparyavagyan. The one who has this knowledge reads other people's minds. He is able to know how the other person is thinking. In Nandi sutra this knowledge has been discussed at length. In the discussion, the writer has posed many questions and given their answers too. The question: "Can manahaparyavagyan look into the mind of a person who lived ten thousand years ago?" In the text of the reply it is said, that, yes, it can be known very clearly. Another question asked is, "Can manahaparyavagyan know the mind of a person to be born fifty thousand years hence?" Time has become one. There is no past or future everything has become the present.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 3.08 Relativity - Dispersion Of Rays
23.03.2007
As a person thinks, his thoughts are turned into pictures by the mind. The picture is an exact translation of the thought. As soon as the second picture comes in, the first one vanishes from the head and moves to the atmosphere. This keeps happening. The picture that goes into the atmosphere may remain there for a million or billion years. So then why are we surprised to think we may be able to see Mahavir giving us his teachings? Why should it surprise us to think we may be able to see the person of Mahavir, Rishabha or Buddha.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [02.04] Psyche, Mind And Health - The Other Side
18.03.2007
If these types of chitta alone had been related to our life, we would never be successful in anything. This has the other side too, resulting from the pure vibrations of the subtle body. This side in the anavarana chitta. There is not just the cover; there is the exposure as well. It is only because of the exposure that we are able to develop our knowledge. Our consciousness is not completely covered.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [02.05] Psyche, Mind And Health - Enduring Chitta
19.03.2007
'Aman’ or absence of the mind is an important word. The mind passes through various states. One of the states is also that in which the mind ceases to be. That is the state of 'Aman’. The distinction that the chitta is enduring and the mind is the creation should be clearly understood. There is the mind if we create it. Where would the mind be if we do not create it? The mind, the speech and the body are the three factors. Among them the case of the mind and the speech is the same. The body would continue to exist so long as man is alive. In the case of the speech and the mind, we may create them when we wish and give them rest when we wish to do that. That is why the mind is not situated anywhere. We create it. If we do not create the mind, the state of Aman' will prevail. That is not the case with the chitta.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [02.06] Psyche, Mind And Health - Chitta, Mind and Bhava
20.03.2007
Let us understand the relationship between the chitta, the mind and the bhava. From the point of view of meditation, the subtle body adhyavasaya, leshya (Aura colouration), the chitta, the bhava and the mind form a complete chain, a total system linking the subtle world and the gross world. Whatever happens in the subtle world is expressed through the mind.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [02.07] Psyche, Mind And Health - Health And Purity Of Mind
21.03.2007
In the context of health, it is very important to discuss the chitta and the mind. It does not have to be a philosophical discussion. While having a philosophical discussion, we should make a definite statement about the form of the mind. Let us also consider the chitta and the mind in the context of health. The person who wishes to be healthy should think about having the proper diet to ensure the supply of vitamins, minerals, proteins. It is altogether an illusory idea to think that he would be healthy by having delicious food.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [03.01] Emotion And Health (Bhava And Svasthya)
22.03.2007
It is easy for us to know and understand the gross world since we live in it. Ours is a world the world of subtle. The subtle world is invisible so it is also unknowable. It cannot be easily known. The body is gross. The mind is subtle than the body. We are even able to understand the mind. The world of the bhava is very subtle.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [03.02] Emotion And Health - Emotion Is A Form (Svarup Hai Bhava)
23.03.2007
The concept of the influence of the bhava on our health is still not clear. The reason is that the mind and the bhava have been regarded as one. In reality, they are completely different. We have created a whole lot of problems by recognizing them as one. It is necessary to understand the form of the bhava in order to understand the distinction between the bhava and the mind.
http://www.herenow4u.de/Pages/eng/Sections/Scripture_Of_Health/03/LordMahavirasScriptureOfH-2.htm

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [03.03] Emotion And Health - Original Source Of Emotion (Bhava Ka Srota)
24.03.2007
It is necessary to understand the definition of the bhava in order to understand it and to know its original source to know its definition. There are a large number of subtle centres inside our body. The original centre is the soul. The soul is encircled by kashaya. Kashaya vibrates with the soul. The vibrations of adhyavasaya influence the leshaya (Psychic colours). The vibrations of the leshaya into the body and give rise to the bhava. This is the long series and long process of the creation of the bhava.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [5.03] Technique - Preparation - Other Postures
19.03.2007
Recitation ofArham
Arham is a Sanskrit syllable (mantra). It has unique sound and its loud repetition has many beneficial effects, not only on the physical level but also on psychological and spiritual levels.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [5.05] Technique - First Step Of Practice Of Preksa - Relaxation (Kayotsarga)
21.03.2007
For a successful session of meditational practice, it is necessary to relax the whole body and eliminate muscular tension. Relaxation and meditation are not identical, but the latter cannot be performed properly unless the body becomes motionless. As long as the body is tense and the muscles contracted, the free flow of energy (prana) is inhibited and mental steadiness and concentration is not possible. Kayotsarga is thus an essential precondition of meditational practice.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [5.06] Technique - Second Step Of Practice Of Preksa Internal Trip (Antaryatra)
23.03.2007
Internal trip (antaryatra) follows kayotsarga.
This exercise promotes better generation of the nervous energy which is necessary for the subsequent meditation practice. It directs the flow of your spiritual energy in an upward direction, thereby weakening the force of psychological distortions such as cruelty and fear.

The Quest For Truth - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
The Quest For Truth - 05.04 - The Value Of The Independence Of Man (4) - The Doctrine Of Karmavad
18.03.2007
The common perception of karmavad has deeply influenced the Indian mind. Thrown into the mould of fatalism. Its influence has reduced the capacity for effort.
Mahavira propounded the principle of human effort (purushartha). His principle of purushartha was not against the principle of karma. Karma is the result of purushartha. That which is the resultant can also be the one to bring about change. By bringing to light the possibilities of karma ripening before time and transformation of karma, Mahavira made the law of karma second to purushartha. There is also the possibility of curtailing or increasing the duration of karma and also its power of fruition.

The Quest For Truth - 06.01 - The Doctrine Of Karma - Background
20.03.2007
Some beings have physical experience but do not mentally perceive them. Some beings have perception but are not able to experience the sensations. Some beings have both perception and experience. The insentient neither knows nor experiences. These are tour alternative states. In the first case there is the ability to experience sensations but no perception (gyan). This is the lowest form of the sentient beings. This is the level of traits. Life can be lived at this level but consciousness cannot be developed. The other state is of pure gyan. There is no power of experience of sentiments here; there is only gyan. The medium of experience is the body. The emancipated soul does not have a body. That which does not have a body cannot experience that which is good or bad...does not come into contact with either of them.

The Quest For Truth - 06.02 - The Doctrine Of Karma - The Cycle Of Karma (1)
22.03.2007
The soul has two states: that of acceptance of negative particles and that of non-acceptance of negative particles. To be in a state of pure knowledge is a state of non-acceptance. Knowledge is the nature of the soul. When it is in its very nature then falsities cannot enter and cause exchange of karmas or influence it.

The Quest For Truth - 06.03 - The Doctrine Of Karma - The Cycle Of Karma (2)
24.03.2007
Karma is paudgolik or material and so insentient. It cannot be one who motivates action. The soul as a substance, acquires a certain state in the form of passions (attachments and aversions). Because of this, karmic matter gets attracted to it. It feeds the kashaya. This is how the process of kashaya begetting karma and karma begetting kashaya goes on. Perverted views, cravings, absence of self-realization are the three states that cause the influx of karma.

Maryada Mahotsav - 143rd - [15] Day 2 - “Acharya Padarohan Samaroh” (Accession Day) - Part 2
R.K. Bengani
27.03.2007
Dear Readers, it is said that one should not judge the day by the harvest he reaps but by the seeds he plants. Gurudarshan can be easily said as combination of both. Gurudarshan is possible only when good karmas come in to fruitation so this part can be compared to reaping the harvest. Plus the efforts made for Gurudarshan and the act of Gurudarshan result in binding of new good karmas…, which can be termed as planting of the seeds. In this context, permit me to say that people came to Gangasahar not only to reap good harvest but also to plant new seeds.

Munishree Kishan Lalji guided us through a wonderful 30-minutes meditation. After relaxation, we were instructed to concentrate on breath, imagining it in the form of a golden column. While inhaling, we were advised to descend the column, while exhaling to ascend. Then we were advised to combine the descending and ascending movement of breath with Ar-Ham, an outline of the first line of Namokar Mantra,’ Namo Arihantanam’ - I bow down to Arihanta, the enlightened ones’.

Abstract Thinking - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Abstract Thinking [19.04] Anupreksha Of Self-Reliance - Dependence Upon Oneself
26.03.2007
A prince was getting initiated. His parents said, "Prince! You are so tender, so very delicate. You are seeking initiation. You do not know that in case of illness, you will not be able to get yourself properly treated. For the sadhaks following the path of penance, all medical treatment is taboo. So what will you do when illness comes? Who will bring you food or drink? You will lie sick, tormented by hunger and thirst what will you achieve thereby?"

Abstract Thinking [19.05] Anupreksha Of Self-Reliance - Youth and Self-Reliance
28.03.2007
The youth power has become a problem today. It is moving towards destruction. Look at the situation obtaining in the country. The energy of the youth of India is far more employed in destructive activities than constructive works. Every day we are faced with problems arising there from. The reason is that our energy is not being properly employed.

Abstract Thinking [19.06] Anupreksha Of Self-Reliance - The Misuse Of Power Has Created A Number Of Problems
30.03.2007
Acharya Sri Tulsi can serve as a model for the youth. When Acharya Sri was only 22 years old, he took upon himself the leadership of a powerful Order and he started developing it. He employed his energy in constructive works. At the very beginning, Acharya Sri's slogan was:
"We must not put our energy to destructive uses."

Anekant : The Third Eye - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Anekanta : The Third Eye 3.09 Relativity - Relativity Is Everything
25.03.2007
If our consciousness is able to tear away from the limits of time and space, then there would be no past, no future, it would all be the present and the present alone. Only the consciousness which becomes infinite, remains. Let us not get stuck with definitions of infinite. So much is clear that, to the enlightened, there is no past or future. They can see each event, whether it belonged to the past or is yet to happen, with tremendous clarity in the future. They can see it happening. To them there is only today, only the present. But of course it is worth reminding oneself that when there is no past or future, there is no present either. These three words lose all meaning. All that remains is the event, that which is. It does not disappear even in infinite time. Is this possible without relativity? Anything bound by time and space cannot be independent. Time and space are connected to our events. This is so because no event can be explained without time and space. We take the help of these two measures and explain events. Without them the explanation is not possible.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 3.10 Relativity - The Two Rules Of Anekanta
27.03.2007
The search for truth should not turn into a labyrinthine one. The man who sets out in search of truth should not get lost in a labyrinth. To grapple with all these problems anekanta has given two rules, which I have explained in detail. The two basic rules are: primary and secondary. Man knows one primary manifested mode, the mode that stares him in the face. But he should not forget that behind it are many unmanifested modes.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 3.11 Relativity - Why Is Dinner Prohibited After Sunset?
29.03.2007
Once a question was posed to me as to why dinner after sunset is prohibited amongst the Jains? Honestly, can there be a time specified even for hunger? It is practical to eat when hungry. This is the only valid rule. For hunger there can be no day or night. How does light or darkness matter?

Anekanta : The Third Eye 3.12 Syaad Is The Royal Pathway
31.03.2007
Every statement is with reference to something. Absolute statements cannot exist. Anekanta shows us the way to understand this secret. It reduces attachments and aversions. The use of the word syaad is the royal pathway through which we can cross the most dangerous ravines. This is such a royal path that evens out the ups and downs along its way making travel easy.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [03.04] Emotion And Health - Emotion And Impetus (Bhavana and Samvega)
25.03.2007
The emotion and the impetus (bhavana and samvega) are the two terms used in Psychology. The emotion and the impetus are synthesised to such an extent that it is not easy to divide them. The bhava is the original source. The bhava does not get expressed. It remains within. When the bhava becomes intense, samvega (impetus) arises. It is only impetus that brings man into the state of happiness or misery. The bhava remains in the background.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [03.05] Emotion And Health - Emotion, Impetus And Health (Bhava, Samvega And Svasthya)
26.03.2007
Now let us think about the question of the relation between the bhava, impetus and health. Now think on this question. Ragashaya and dveshashaya these do not influence health directly. When the bhava influences health then it turns into the impetus. These cannot directly influence health. These influence health through the body. The brain is the most important part of our body.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [03.06] Emotion And Health - Physical, Mental And Emotional Disease (Vyadhi, Aadhi And Upadhi)
27.03.2007
Three words are used in preksha dhyan: Vyadhi (physical disease), adhi (mental diseases) and upadhi (emotional disease). Leaving aside mental illness, if we think about health along with physical illness and mental suffering, the problem would not be solved. A gentleman said, "Maharaj, I had got my tests done everywhere, and had diagnosis done through microscopic instruments. The doctors say that I have no disease and I am in the best of health. But the fact is that I am feeling ill. I am in trouble, I am in pain."

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [03.07] Emotion And Health - Emotion And Aura (Bhava And Abhamandala)
28.03.2007
Actually, that illness which has neither affected the body nor the mind is neither somatic nor psychosomatic. It is neither a physical nor a mental illness. It is an illness related to the emotions. It has got into the world of the bhava. Research in the modern medical science can be a witness to it.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [03.08] Emotion And Health - Detachment Is The Formula For Health
29.03.2007
Mahatma Gandhi used to say, "I shall never fall ill, because I am following the path of detachment and also trying to keep myself away from attachment and malevolence." It is absolutely true that a dispassionate person can neve fall ill. Let us forget about those minor illnesses which come now and then. But the sources of major illnesses are attachment and malevolence, or the emotional impulse resulting from the intent of attachment and malevolence.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [03.09] Emotion And Health - Secrets Of Mahavira's Health
30.03.2007
If we think from the point of medical science or from the point of view of a doctor, Mahavira could never have been healthy. He took no nourishing food at all during the twelve and a half years of his sadhana. He performed only penance and fasted. He took no food and no water. He broke his fast with whatever plain and simple food that was available. His body got no nourishment at all. Still he was no perturbed.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [03.10] Emotion And Health - Bhava And Diseases
31.03.2007
We pay lot of attention to external causes, to virus and germs and consider them to be the root of all diseases. We reduce even the mind to a secondary position and also reduce the bhavas to the same position. Our immunity system, our resisting power against the disease does not depend on these external factors. Its source lies in the purity of the mind, or going beyond, in the purity of the bhava and the leshya. Or going even beyond, it lies in the purity of adhyavasaya. And even beyond this there is a source that is subsidence of kashaya.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [5.07.1] Technique - 3rd Step Of Practice - Perception Of Breath (1)
25.03.2007
Breath is the source of vital energy - source of life. An efficient and easy way to control mental activity is perception of properly regulated breath. Breathing must be regulated to be deep, slow, calm and rhythmic. Complete exhalation and slow inhalation by the use of diaphragm is called dirgha svasa (i.e. deep or diaphragmatic breathing).

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [5.07.2] Technique - 3rd Step Of Practice - Perception Of Breath (2)
27.03.2007
Throughout our daily experience we encounter manifestation and coexistence of two opposing principles such as unity and multiplicity, creation and destruction, positive and negative, hot and cold. Normally the opposing forces are in equilibrium. In our body also, there is normally an equilibrium between the two opposite components of the autonomic nervous system - sympathetic and parasympathetic. For optimum health conditions (called homeostasis), a balanced equilibrium must be maintained.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [5.07.3] Technique - 3rd Step Of Practice - Perception Of Breath (3)
29.03.2007
In the previous exercise the perception of breathing through alternate (nostrils) was performed without pause between inhalation and exhalation, i.e. without holding the breath. This technique can be made more effective by the modification of the rhythm, by introducing retention of the breath between each exhalation and inhalation. The time of holding the breath is to be adjusted according to the ability of the practitioner and in any case it should not produce any discomfort. This modified technique increases the steadiness of mind and awareness.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [5.07.4] Technique - 3rd Step Of Practice - Perception of Body
31.03.2007
The technique of Sarira Preksa ( perception of body) is an efficient means to re-establish one's contact with his body and to develop one's ability to trigger beneficial mechanism.
The process is centripetal, that is, from outside to inside. Commencing with the outermost layer of the body, one has to penetrate deeply inside.

The Quest For Truth - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
The Quest For Truth - 06.04 - The Doctrine Of Karma - Kashaya
26.03.2007
The first flow of consciousness takes place when the power of discernment is awakened. All bondages from the karmic body to kashaya (or the vicious energy field) drop off with the realization of the fact that the soul is different and the body is different.

The Quest For Truth - 07.01 - Soul And The Supreme Soul (1) (Atma and Paramatma)
28.03.2007
Sampikkhaye appagampayennam...
Perceive the souls through the soul and you will become the supreme soul.

The Quest For Truth - 07.02 - Soul And The Supreme Soul (2)
30.03.2007
The souls are a bottomless pit (akskaya-kosha). This is the vegetable kingdom. There are infinite numbers of souls in them. There is one category of vegetation called vyavahara rashi. In that there are many, many souls that have not ever developed. They have been in the same state from primordial beginning. With the coming together of all the factors of time, destiny and karmas, a soul leaves that abode and comes into the category of vyavahara rashi. Here its development begins.

Geheimnisse des Geistes [10.2] - Erweckung der Energie - Ziel und Zweck (2)
30.03.2007
Die Philosophen konnten sich nicht über die Existenz dessen einigen, was zu subtil und damit für die Sinnesorgane nicht erfassbar ist. Also entstanden zwei einander widersprechende Auffassungen:
: Was erkannt werden kann, liegt innerhalb der Reichweite der Sinnesorgane.
: Was nicht erkannt werden kann, liegt außerhalb der Reichweite der Sinnesorgane.
Ersteres können wir mithilfe der Sinnesorgane erkennen, das zweite muss unerkannt bleiben, weil wir über kein Mittel verfügen, mit dem wir es erkennen können.

Ahimsa Yatra, headed by Dr. Baid, MD and MLA Rajasthan, reached Hariyal 15 minutes after we had arrived. Yuvacharya Mahashramanji and a group of monks drew Acharyashree’s chariot through the sands of the desert with admirable equanimity and the same speed as on the asphalted pavement from Taranagar to Mahatma. Lay followers chanted Mantras and prayers; everyone gave his heartiest welcome to Ahimsa Yatra.

Tamkor was well prepared for the joyful event. The town celebrated its great son with festive ornaments on all streets, Ahimsa Yatra was supposed to pass. Acharyashree’s portrait greeted from walls, maximum-sized placards, and fronts. People highly concentrated were about to polish a decoration here, and to give some last paintbrush there. There was no nervosity in the atmosphere; the calmness of the town was not disturbed by loud voices or hectic action. The event was organised perfectly.

Mahavira Jayanti - 2606th Birthday of Bhagwan Mahavira
Acharya Mahaprajna
01.04.2007
I wish to present an idea before the world's government in power – In order to get solution to the problems deliberations are made from political, economic and materialistic point of view. Similarly, deliberations are required to be made from the points of view of non-violence and non-absolutistic approach (that is taking into consideration all points of view).
If “Ahimsa Ayoga” (Non-violence Commission) is set up for such purposes, we can hope for sentimental behavior in human relations.

Mahavira's Philosophy Of Absolute Love
Acharya Mahaprajna
01.04.2007
Indiatimes
One may ask: If love is dominated with worldly attachment, then how can worldly attachment and renunciation be made compatible?
We can trace out the source of compatibility between worldly attachment and renunciation by keeping in view the philosophy of Anekant. When there is attachment towards materialism, detachment towards consciousness is created.
When attachment towards consciousness exists, detachment towards materialism becomes natural. Love that is defined by bodily attachment generates problems.

Speaking at a function held at the residence of AICC president Mrs. Sonia Gandhi on occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, she said, bhagwan mahavir immortal teaching of live and let live is as relevant today as it was about 2606 years ago. Sonia Gandhi said, we want peace and harmony because there is no alternative to it. In the age of nuclear bomb, communal violence and terrorism there is no way to resolve problems other than through peaceful and non-violence means. She said people need to adopt the golden principal of non-violence, anekanta, world peace, brotherhood and communal harmony that was proposed by mahavir.

Never before in history did the suicidal evil of violence manifest itself so abundantly as now. Never before did it assume such ugly and varied forms. Morality and spirituality have taken a back seat; brute force and vulgar materialism hold sway over a large number of people who practice unashamed violence in its multifarious forms to seize power and wealth. Violence against living beings and against nature has put a curse on entire universe.
It is in the above context that saints like Acharya Mahapragya assume the status of a likely saviour of mankind.

PREKSHADHYAN - An Introduction [ 1 ] The Making of Personality
Acharya Mahaprajna
05.04.2007
An introduction in  8 chapters: - The Making of Personality - Relief from Tension - Time Management - Self Management - Physical Health - Mental Health - Emotional Health - Working Proficiency
There is a profound relationship between an individual and society, like that between a drop and a ocean. The drop and the ocean like the individual and the world cannot be separated and therefore they cannot be viewed in isolation. Two Sanskrit words Pind and Brahmand are very well known. Whatever is in the embryo is in the universe and whatever is in the universe is in the embryo. According to the philosophy of Anekant, the relation between the individual (the embryo) and the collectivity or society is so close that it cannot be severed. There is a saying that shaking a finger results in shaking the whole world. The commentators have put the whole concept instructively thus: whenever a sage or anyone tears a cloth, some particles of the atoms thus released may travel thousands of miles and may cause ripples in a sheet of water if they strike it. This encapsulates the entire theory of the environment. Everyone and everything is so closely related to one another that it is undesirable to harm, obstruct or oppress anyone or anything. We should experience this all pervasive universal interrelatedness. It applies to the individual and society as well.

PREKSHADHYAN - An Introduction [ 2 ] Relief from Tension
Acharya Mahaprajna
07.04.2007
Man is full of passions. The cycle of passions is operating within the definition of doctrine of Karma. Going by the Vedas, Rajogun and Tamogun are active, i.e. the disposition of activity or passion (rajas) and that ignorance, moroseness, inertness or maliciousness (tamas) are at work. Tension is the effect not the cause. There are many causes of tension. In the language of doctrine of Karma the biggest cause of tension is Mohakarma (the fourth deluding Karma out of eight Karmas at whose appearance a soul is subject to attachment, hatred, passion, sexual enjoyment and falsehood), which causes anger, pride, greed, fear, hatred and lust, all of which generate tension. Besides rajogun and tamogun, there are physical cusses also leading to tension.

Abstract Thinking [20.01] Anupreksha Of Truth - Anupreksha Of Truth

One important accomplishment of meditation is - movement in the direction of truth, the practice of living the truth. Not to make an attempt to falsify the truth is an achievement of meditation. If, even after passing through the process of meditation, we have not been able to develop a realistic outlook, it means that our meditation has not yet matured. Meditation should lead to a spiritual consummation; spirituality must flower.

Abstract Thinking [20.02] Anupreksha Of Truth - Statable Truth
04.04.2007
We want to know the eternal, the infinite, the whole truth. This demand is never fulfilled. We only come to know a very small part of the infinite, of the whole. Discontented with what is given, we start struggling for the whole and our struggle never ends. The best thing for a man would have been not to have spoken at all. At least not about truth. Had he used his tongue only for the fulfillment of practical needs, there would have been no wars.

Abstract Thinking [20.03] Anupreksha Of Truth - What is Truth?
05.04.2007
A vision of the real, the actual, may be said to consist in the truth of a point-of-view or the view-point of truth. The enunciation of the real constitutes the truth of speech. The vow to speak the truth is an aspect of character, of behaviour. He who takes the vow of speaking the truth utters only that which is real, the “what is” and “what is alone” conforms to the religion of non-violence.

Anekant : The Third Eye - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.01 Third Eye 1 - The Philosophical Journey: Travel Guide Of Anekanta
02.04.2007
To the man with right perceptions, all philosophies seem true and to the man with warped perceptions, every philosophy seems baseless or untrue. The truth or untruth of a sastra js dependent on our vision. When the eye of anekanta is opened then everything seems true, nothing is baseless. As long as we see with only the two physical eyes, things get divided into true and false. One person is loved and another not loved. One thing is acceptable and another, not. But when the third eye is opened then there are no likes or dislikes, there is only an entity. When the third eye is opened then nothing is destroyed or created, nothing is permanent or eternal, a third category is formed. This third eye is that of anekanta.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.02 Third Eye 1 - The Secret Of Anekanta: The Opening Of The Third Eye
04.04.2007
The Acharyas of anekanta have said that there is nothing permanent or impermanent in the world. The eye that looks for permanence is one and the eye that looks for impermanence is another. But the third eye is that which sees the truth. When that third eye opens, a third category comes into being. That is neither permanent nor impermanent but is both permanent and impermanent. One man sees equality. Another sees the inequality. But with the opening of the third eye, there is no equality or inequality, everything is both equal and unequal… making for a separate category.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.03 Third Eye 1 - Truth The Third Category
06.04.2007
When the third eye opens, the existing does not remain the truth, the non-existent does not remain the truth, but a third category comes into being which is a unison of both existence and non-existence. Some say an object can be described, some say it cannot. Some say that a certain thing can be said while some others say it cannot be said. One philosophical view believes that one can describe an object verbally and another believes that one cannot describe an object verbally.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [03.11] Emotion And Health - Aura And Purification Of Bhava
01.04.2007
With the purification of the bhava, one's leshya becomes pure. The aura of the body changes. Concentration on this aura is widely practised during prekshadhyana. Our colours are associated with our breathing. While breathing, we are not aware of the colour we are breathing in. Our breath is sometimes black in colour, and sometimes blue, sometimes green and sometimes yellow and sometimes white.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [03.12] Emotion And Health - Question Of Health Related To The Purification Of Emotion
02.04.2007
If we go a little deeper into the question of health, we shall have to go very much further. Whatever has been accepted today and whatever truth we have found is not all that is there. We shall have to look still further.

We are discussing the sermon and health theory as propounded by Lord Mahavira. Mahavira mentioned five types of the body: the gross body - the protease body [capable of transformation at will] - the communication body [created ad hoc] - the luminous body - the subtler body.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [04.03] Bio-Potential And Health - Knowledge - Concordant Parts (Gyana - Samvadi Anga)
05.04.2007
There are five senses of the concomitant part of knowledge. Our consciousness is expressed through these senses. If we go beyond this, there is a centre of consciousness between the sensuous consciousness and the super sensuous consciousness, which is the pratibha chetana or the ingenious consciousness, known as sambhinnasrotolabdhi.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [04.04] Bio-Potential And Health - Bio-Potential, The Vital Power (Paryapti, Jivani Shakti)
06.04.2007
Throat, the thyroid portion of the body, is the centre of food paryapti. Here is a process of chayapachaya (increase and decrease). This is a very important part of the body. The centre of the body potential is the navel, which is the fundamental centre in the structure of our body. Sage Patanjali said, Nabichakre Kayavyuhagyanam "We know about the structure of our whole body through the nabhi chakra". The knowledge of whole body structure is known by concentrating on the navel. The navel has significant role in Yoga as well as from the physiological point of view. The navel is the central point. The nourishment that the body constantly needs comes through the navel. It is through the navel that the particles of matter are continuously absorbed from outside. The function of absorption runs continuously.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [5.07.5] Technique - 3rd Step Of Practice - Perception Of Psychic Centres
02.04.2007
Psychological distortions such as cruelty, retaliation, hate, fear etc. have their origin in the unbalanced and unregulated secretions of adrenals and gonads. They generate negative attitudes and irrational behaviour and result in psychic uncleanliness. It is therefore obvious that to cleanse the psyche, we have to regulate the endocrine output and eradicate distortions from our mental tendencies and behaviour.

The Quest For Truth - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
The Quest For Truth - 07.03 - Soul And The Supreme Soul (3)
01.04.2007
Our world is very strange. That which we should ask ourselves we ask others and that which we should ask others, we ask ourselves. We should ask other: "Who are you?" That we ask ourselves. We should ask ourselves, "Who am I?" That we ask others. We are not able to find an answer to the question, "who am I" because we are asking others. We will not be able to find the answer as long as we continue to search in the outer world.

The Quest For Truth - 07.04 - Soul And The Supreme Soul (4)
05.04.2007
The disciple asked, "Sir! How can I become the supreme soul?" The teacher (guru) replied, "If you want to become the supreme soul, then meditate upon it. Keep watching it. Those who do not meditate upon the supreme soul can never be one with it. Only he can become a supreme soul who perceives the supreme soul, reflects upon it, imbibes it and becomes one with it.” The oneness with the supreme soul helps the seed of the supreme soul in the soul sprout. As the sapling grows, it grows into the supreme soul.

The Quest For Truth - 08.01.1 - The Path Of Sadhana - To Torture The Body Is Not Dharma. (1)
07.04.2007
The body is a cage. Some are imprisoned within it by their bondages while some others reside within it to safeguard their precious treasures. For both categories it is important to live within the cage. But the meaning of "living" is different. Some live within it to experience pain while some live within it to become free from pain. The meaning of sadhana (loosely translated as spiritual practice) is to get freedom from all kinds of pain. Bhagvan Mahavira said, "The path of sadhana is one that brings freedom from all pains." That a practitioner should follow this path as well as invite pain seems to be contradictory. When the clasp of pain has to be broken, then it cannot also be invited simultaneously. The term kayaklesh cannot be interpreted as inviting pains. To torture the body, to give it pain cannot be dharma.

Geheimnisse des Geistes [10.3] - Erweckung der Energie - Ziel und Zweck (3)
07.04.2007

R.K. Bengani
10.04.2007
Dear Readers, afternoon session of Acharya Padarohan Samaroh was about to reach it’s zenith. After about three hours of lectures, songs, poetry, couplets and various other forms of presentations which the public digested with zest, the programme shifted to even higher zone of devotion and anticipation when the time came for Acharyashri to address the gathering. Inspite of fast approaching gochari time, most sadhvishris and samaniji still remained at the venue. The attendance among general public also did not decline till end. They all looked forward with keen interest to listen to Acharyashri’s message.

HereNow4U - Living Jainism Tour 2006 - 05.11 Hariyal
12.04.2007
We headed for Hariyal again, as Yuvacharyashree Mahashramanji had accepted to receive us at 16:45 for a longer talk. We arrived a quarter of an hour in advance and took the opportunity to talk again with Samanijis Nirmal & Ravi Pragya. They really felt happy about following Acharyashree with Ahimsa Yatra to Tamkor, Acharyashree’s native place.

Next morning, about 07:30 we went by car to Hariyal to be present when Ahimsa Yatra starts. We before took some biscuits, water, and tea, but forgot to take water with us. Did not matter, our mind was elsewhere. Half the way to Hariyal, we passed groups of Sadhvishrees whose white Saris from a distance were shining white points in the desert.

The 7th Annual Jain Lecture at SOAS, University of London
Dinesh Z. Shah
09.04.2007
Professor Lawrence A. Babb from Amherst College, USA delivered the 7th Annual Jain Lecture, sponsored by the European Network of Jain Studies at the Brunei Gallery Lecture Theatre on Wednesday, 21st March 2007.
The theme of the lecture was “ Jainism and the Culture of Trade”. However, in his opening address Professor Babb pointed out that the title is misleading and he therefore subtitled his talk, “Jains and Gems”. His talk was concentrated on a mineral and how it became intertwined with the lives of Jain community in Jaipur, India.

PREKSHADHYAN - An Introduction [ 3 ] Time Management
Acharya Mahaprajna
09.04.2007
The completion of a task is time-bound. Success eludes the person who is careless about time-management. Even the quality of work suffers in the absence of proper planning of time. Management relates to many areas. Like time management, there is also space management, which too is a pre-condition of full success. Mahavira profoundly investigated every task from four view-points: substance, (substratum of attributes and modes), space, time and mental inclination. Success can be assured only by the combination of all the four. Even if the other three elements are present, in the absence of time management, the desired result cannot be obtained. In fact no task can be conceived outside a time-frame.

Live With Devotion
Acharya Mahaprajna
12.04.2007
It's the absence of faith that spells despair.
How strange is man's disposition. A person engaged in good work is soon disappointed, while the evil-doer never abandons hope. The thieves, the plunderers and the dacoits never despair.
The evil commands faith more than the good. To have faith in goodness, one must have greater devotion. It is the absence of faith that spells despair. Faith and evil seem to be so bound together that a man takes to evil and his faith therein is strengthened by itself. Not much effort is required in that direction. But for the strengthening of faith in the path of goodness, a tremendous effort is called for.

PREKSHADHYAN - An Introduction [ 5 ] Physical Health
Acharya Mahaprajna
13.04.2007
Naturopathy, Ayurveda and other systems have given a lot of attention to hygiene or health science. In medical science, therapeutics has been highly developed, but it will be no exaggeration to say that health science has developed much less. The science of remaining healthy and the science of treating diseased people are two different things. Even though allopathy has put forth the principle that 'prevention is better that cure', it has been given much more attention and emphasis in naturopathy and Ayurveda.

Abstract Thinking [20.04] Anupreksha Of Truth - Seek the Truth for Yourself
08.04.2007
The field of spirituality is a scientific one. It is a field in which everyone has to own a scientific outlook. Whoever traverses this path has to become a scientist. It is not that Acharya Tulsi becomes the scientist, seeks the truth and all others become his followers and exploit the truth realized by him. No, it does not happen like that. Every sadhak has to become a scientist, every sadhak has to experiment for himself and realize the truth on his own.

Anekant : The Third Eye - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.04 Third Eye 1 - Anger: Reason And Pacification
08.04.2007
A campaign was launched: Grow more grains. Use chemical fertilizers and improve yield. This order came into being. With chemical fertilizers, the yield no doubt, increased, but the nutrition in the grain decreased. Grain became harmful to such an extent that those who consumed it, even died at times. On the one hand we make attempts to control population. On the other we have medicines trying to improve the longevity of man. And at another level we have the use of chemical fertilizers that takes the lives of people without intending to.
This is a cheap option to reduce the population. Poisonous medicine, poisonous grain and family planning. . . I can see no difference between the three. All three seem to say the same thing. Politicians are very clever. They do not opt for direct killing instead they advocate the use of material that is sweet to taste but meets their ends too.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.05 Third Eye 1 - Third Eye Means Equanimity
10.04.2007
Our third eye is the eye of equanimity. We have two eyes. Our right eye symbolizes attachment and the left, aversion.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.06 Third Eye 1 - The Left Eye Has Some Peculiarities
12.04.2007
As long as the two eyes denote like and dislike, anger will remain. Anger dissolves with the opening of the third eye. The third eye is the eye of equanimity. Then there is no attachment or aversion for matter, but a realistic view, a true view. This is equanimity. Matter is just matter. No matter is likeable or dislikeable.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.07 Third Eye 1 - The Great Maxim For Meditational Practice: Anekanta
14.04.2007
Anekanta is not merely a metaphysical concept. It is our complete guide to practical life. It is a great maxim for meditational practice. As long as passions are not assuaged, likes and dislikes are not reduced, the third eye of anekanta is not available for us.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [04.05] Bio-Potential And Health - Basic Food Of Life (Jivana Ka Mulbhuta Aahara)
08.04.2007
Paryapti with regard to food and paryapti with regard to body are basic foundation in life. How long a particular  person would live depends on the paryapti with regard to food. Thyroid and the paryapti with regard to food are closely related. Life span of a person would depend on his paryapti with regard to food. Without the paryapti with regard to food, a person would die.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [04.06] Bio-Potential And Health - Centre Is In The Brain
09.04.2007
The centre of the paryapti with regard to the senses is in our brain. The centres for hearing and seeing are also in the brain. The centre for the paryapti with regard to the respiration is in the brain.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [04.07] Bio-Potential And Health - Bio-Potential Regarding Food (Ahara Paryapti)
10.04.2007
It has been said that one should concentrate on the throat for an hour and fifteen minutes. This is because it would help the formation of thyroxin or the secretion from the thyroid gland, and the process of metabolism would be proper. Thyroid is related not only with our process of metabolism but also with our instincts. If the functioning of the thyroid is not correct one can start having mental disturbances like fear, depression, etc.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [04.08] Bio-Potential And Health - Bio-Potential With Regard To The Body (Sharira Paryapti)
11.04.2007
The next question is about the paryapti with regard to the body. Man creates obstruction even in the paryapti with regard to the body. There is an expression in popular language meaning the shifting of the navel. Whether one believes it or not, but it is the fact that, when the navel shifts from its place, the whole system is disturbed. Once it is restored to its place, the person becomes immediately healthy. This is a matter proved by experiment and experience, whether science accepts it or not.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [04.09] Bio-Potential And Health - Key To Health (Svasthya Ki Kunji)
12.04.2007
This question was considered from the metaphysical point of view. This is the main centre of fire-bearing particles. The portion of the body between the anus and the navel is said to be the centre of apana prana (One of the five pranas which comes out through the anus).

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [04.10] Bio-Potential And Health - Paryapti Regarding Senses And Health
13.04.2007
In prekshadhyana, one is asked to concentrate on all the five senses. The process of concentration on the paryaptis in also well developed, but no experiments have been conducted in this field so far. It is necessary to pay attention to the paryapti with regard to the senses along with the paryapti with regard to food and the body. You can remain healthy if your senses are healthy. You must concentrate on the eyes for five minutes, on the ears for five minutes and on the nose for ten minutes. You would then be free from many troubles as well as physical ailments. This has been proved through experience.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [04.11] Bio-Potential And Health - Paryapti with Regard to Respiration and Health
14.04.2007
The fourth paryapti is with regard to respiration. Its relation to health is very evident. Further discussion on the subject does not seem necessary. The person, who has practised proper respiration and kept the paryaptis with regard to respiration in the proper state, has been spared of many troubles.
Proper breathing is the function of the paryapti with regard to respiration.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [5.07.7] Technique - 3rd Step Of Practice - Practice Of Contemplation
09.04.2007
Practice of contemplation is an important exercise in the system of Preksa Dhyana. As stated earlier the practice of contemplation falls into two categories:
1) To contemplate and reflect on what is eternal, true and real as the thought process concentrates on a single facet of reality, contemplation becomes a real experience and the practitioner is face to face with reality.
2) To effect attitudinal changes by the process of auto suggestion and repeated recitation. This exercise is a practical application of will-power which has been developed and reinforced by prior practice and perceptual meditation. In this exercise, counter-vibrations capable of countermanding the effects or activators of negative attitude are generated.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [5.08.1] Technique - Contemplation Of Transitoriness
13.04.2007
Reflect on the basic principle that "what is transient is not permanent"

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [5.08.2] Technique - Contemplation Of Fearlessness
14.04.2007
Contemplate on the high moral value of this virtue on the following lines:
Fear withers even the developed abilities and does not permit the latent ones to be developed.
I must, therefore, strive to attain the virtue of fearlessness.
Everybody tries to frighten one who is afraid.
Fear makes one a coward.
A coward does neither attract respect nor sympathy.
I firmly resolve to attain fearlessness to develop latent inner strength.
Undoubtedly I will attain freedom from fear.

Kayaklesh is the second lesson in sadhana. The first lesson in training is fasting. Bhagvan Mahavira gave four instructions in respect of food:
Fasting, - Meager meals, - Different resolves pertaining to food, and  - To give up milk, yoghurt etc.

Jainism And The Temples Of Mount Abu And Ranakpur - 18

Ranakpur 73

Jainism And The Temples Of Mount Abu And Ranakpur - 19

Together with the extended shrines (no. 8 in the plan), the temple is surrounded by eighty-four devakulikas (no. 9 in the plan). It has the appearance of a classical vihara (temple based on the ground plan of a monastery), a common structure amongst the Jains. The figure eighty-four is representative of the twenty-four Tirthankaras of the past, present and future, respectively, plus the so-called twelve eternal Tirthankaras, of whom four each stand for one aeon respectively. The builder of this temple complex undoubtedly wanted to emulate the design on the first Adinatha temples as conceived and constructed, according to legend, by the sons of the first Tirthankara, Bharata and Bahubali. They too had eighty-four subsidiary shrines.

Jainism And The Temples Of Mount Abu And Ranakpur - 20

Ranakpur 82+83

In the meghanada mandapa on the northern side, there is a large marble elephant (see P. 94-95) dating back to 1687. On the back of the elephant is mounted the mahout and beside him Marudevi, the mother of Adinatha. She is said to have come to hear the sermon of her son. Legend has it that on catching sight of him while still some distance away she achieved moksha. She would thus be the first person to have escaped the cycle of birth in this current epoch of decline and evil.

Jainism And The Temples Of Mount Abu And Ranakpur - 21

Ranakpur 46c

In the balana mandapa on the southern side, two reliefs are facing each other with a diameter of one metre each. They evidently have been created as complementary pieces. The jambu dvipa, the circular continent of the middle world in the centre of which stands Meru, the mountain of the world, represented on the eastern side. It is surrounded by mountains on which are located the abodes of the gods, and stylised forests. The entrances represented on the four sides are of special importance.

Jainism And The Temples Of Mount Abu And Ranakpur - 22

Ranakpur 74

Stylised representations of the holy mountains are common to Jain temples. On P.74-75, the Shatrunjaya is shown divided almost like a case in which figures of Tirthankaras and shikharas (temple towers) have been arranged.

Jainism And The Temples Of Mount Abu And Ranakpur - 23

Ranakpur 40a

Excursus: The Life of Parsva

As mentioned earlier in the paragraph on Parsva in the chapter on Jainism, in all the previous incarnations of the Tirthankara there was in contrast to him a hostile and evil brother who personified the darker side of human existence: selfishness and a craving for power.

Jainism And The Temples Of Mount Abu And Ranakpur - 24

Ranakpur 75

Parsva was reborn as an elephant as he had been conscious of regretting death in his previous life. For a long time, he roamed in the forest raging wildly, frightened pious ascetics, until he one day came face to face with his former king. The king had renounced the world and he immediately recognised in the elephant his former minister. He succeeded in calming the elephant and imparted religious instruction to him.

Jainism And The Temples Of Mount Abu And Ranakpur - 25

Ranakpur 77

Subsequent cycles of birth are only as human being and god, since in the very next incarnation, as Prince Agnivega, he for the first time renounced the world and becomes an ascetic, i.e. he had already achieved a higher level of knowledge. This time too his brother, now reborn as a poisonous snake, killed him. Parsva rose to a higher sphere of divinity, whereas Kamatha fell into a lower one of hell.

Jainism And The Temples Of Mount Abu And Ranakpur - 26

Ranakpur 79

The next time Parsva renounced his throne when he discovered his first grey hair. As an ascetic, he gained such supernatural powers that all around him, land and living beings enjoyed happiness and harmony. As a result, when Kamatha now killed him, he was able to achieve the highest divine form of an Indra.

Jainism And The Temples Of Mount Abu And Ranakpur - 27

Ranakpur 81

At sixteen, Parsva undertook the greatest sacrifice and meditated standing in the forest. He was surrounded by an aura of peace. His brother, reborn as a low-level god due to the sustained asceticism, discovered him there and attacked him with all the supernatural powers at his disposal. However, a pair of snakes, the reincarnation of the two killed earlier by Kamatha, spread a gigantic hood over him as protection. This explains why Parsva represented with gigantic snake hood.

Jainism And The Temples Of Mount Abu And Ranakpur - 28

Ranakpur 88

The later history of Ranakpur

During the reign of Aurangzeb (1658-1707), Muslim armies advanced through Mewar and pillaged Ranakpur. In later centuries, famines decimated the population in the surrounding area. The temple, which in parts had collapsed, was abandoned and for a time it became a hideout for gangs of robbers.

PREKSHADHYAN - An Introduction [ 6 ] Mental Health
Acharya Mahaprajna
15.04.2007
Acharya Mahaprajna 016The body is gross and perceptible, the mind is subtle and imperceptible, and can be known only through its function. The body, the sense organs and the mind are three functionaries, which we experience. The mind directs the sense organs and compiles their objects. But for this compilation, each sense organ would have been left to act independently and no progress could have been possible.

PREKSHADHYAN - An Introduction [ 7 ] Emotional Health
Acharya Mahaprajna
18.04.2007
cal and mental health is visible externally. But emotional health is an internal matter. Many things going on inside us are known to us, but we do not know much about what is at the root of them. The principle of preksha dhyan is to see the soul by the soul. It simply means - have an internal trip and see the goings on there.

PREKSHADHYAN - An Introduction [ 7 ] Working Proficiency
Acharya Mahaprajna
20.04.2007
Acharya Mahaprajna 016It is not obligatory to work. What makes it obligatory is sits necessity. We work as much as is necessary. Work in itself has no meaning. Man works according to his needs. Work is dependent on the purpose in view. Once the purpose is achieved the work comes to an end. There is a saying (even a dull-witted man does not work without a purpose). Purpose is important for any activity. What is our purpose? It is to fulfil the basic needs of life - food, clothing, shelter, education, medical aid etc. Work grows with the growth of needs.

Abstract Thinking - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Abstract Thinking [20.06] Anupreksha Of Truth - Exploration of Truth
18.04.2007
What is truth? This question has been discussed since the beginning of time. That which is eternal and unchanging is truth, but that is not the only truth.

Abstract Thinking [20.07] Anupreksha Of Truth - Two Aspects Of Truth - Existentialism And Utilitarianism
19.04.2007
Lord Mahavira was a veetaraaga; he had a direct experience of truth. What he said was not based on anything he heard or read, but was the outcome of his own direct experience of truth. Therefore his words naturally came to us as a revelation of truth and of self-realization.

Abstract Thinking [20.08] Anupreksha Of Truth - Obstacles To Truth
20.04.2007
Truth is not outside the soul. Truth is not to be sought - it is already there. We have only to remove obstacles, which obstruct its manifestation. It is because of obstacles that truth appears to be distant, far off. When the obstacles are removed, no duality exists between truth and ourselves.

Abstract Thinking [20.09] Anupreksha Of Truth - Truth Is Ever Free And Unconditioned
21.04.2007
Truth is ever free and unconditioned. Every sect maintains, "Our creed alone is true!" This upholding of one's own creed as truth only serves to advance untruth. Lord Mahavira said: "Anekanta (many-sided perception) is true; one-sided perception is not true.' A total, comprehensive view constitutes truth. Yet the aphorism read: "Only unconditioned observation is true."

Anekant : The Third Eye - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.08 Third Eye 1 - Anekanta Is The Real Eye
17.04.2007
One gentleman asked, "Is there rebirth? After death is the soul born again? Is this possible?" I replied that if you know destruction and creation, then rebirth is possible.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.09 Third Eye 1 - Permanence Is The Third Eye
18.04.2007
Origination and cessation are two principles. The third is permanence or dhrauvya. Dhruv means immortal. That which never dies is dhruv. That which never comes to an end. Dhrauvya is the third eye. We have to open this. This is the eye, which discerns the truth. Once this opens the question of rebirth just does not arise.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.10 Third Eye 1 - Man Is Male And Fernale
19.04.2007
A gentleman asked, "Girls become boys and boys, girls. Sex change is brought about. Is this true? Is it possible?”
I said that it was not impossible. If we look at them with only two eyes, then it is impossible. Because till now we have seen that a boy is born as one and dies as one and similarly a girl is born as one and dies as a girl too. Our two eyes are used to categorize a boy as the male and a girl as the female. We have not seen a girl change into a boy or a boy change into a girl. So with our present vision we find it impossible to imagine. To see the reality the third eye is necessary. The eye of anekanta is necessary. If we look through the eyes of anekanta, it will seem possible. No possibility will seem remote.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.11 Third Eye 1 - The World Of Unmanifested Modes
20.04.2007
Think about this on the basis of anekanta. The information gained from gross or manifest modes is not complete. The world of manifested modes is very small. That which is not manifested is a much larger world. Gross modes are few, the subtle ones many more. As long as we do not step into the world of the unmanifested or subtle modes, all decisions will be single dimensional, incomplete. From the viewpoint of anekanta, they would be considered untrue.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.12 Third Eye 1 - Science Benefits Religion
21.04.2007
Common people without hesitation say science has killed religion. I believe that nothing else has fostered religion as science has. If science had not explored and discovered the world of the subtle modes and subtle truths then the many dogmatic philosophers would have turned more violent .and that would have resulted in many more conflicts. The third eye of philosophers is not open yet and so there is constant dialogue and argument. They see only with two eyes.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [04.12] Bio-Potential And Health - Paryapti With Regard To Speech And Health
15.04.2007
Let us now think about the paryaptis with regard to speech and the mind. Actually, the paryaptis with regard to speech and health do not appear to have a direct relation. But speech also has a great influence on health. If we take too much work from the paryapti with regard to speech, there would be problems. If a person goes on speaking beyond the active capacity of the paryapti with regard to language, his vital energy would be depleted and his health would be affected.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [04.13] Bio-Potential And Health - Health And Self-Restraint (Svasthya And Samyama)
16.04.2007
The paryapti with regard to food needs rest. That is why it is said that we must control our eating and not go on eating day and night. The paryapti of the body also needs rest. Hence we should not work the whole day. The paryapti of the senses too needs rest. Therefore, we should not take work from our senses all through the day. Breathing also needs a respite. Hence, we should not breathe fast. Of course, it is necessary to breathe, because man cannot remain alive without breathing.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [05.01] Who Is Ill? (Rugna Kauri)
17.04.2007
Happiness and unhappiness are the two main phenomena of life. Health is very closely related to happiness. It is said that happiness is of varied kinds. One of them is health. Unhappiness is also said to be of many kinds. One of them is disease. Health is happiness, disease is unhappiness.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [05.02] Who Is Ill? - Illness Affects The Whole Body
18.04.2007
There is an incident mentioned in the Bhagvatisutra, according to which Mahavira once asked Gautama. "Is the wheel of this cart is whole or fragmented? Is it unbroken or broken? Is it part of the umbrella or the whole umbrella? Gautama said, "Lord, which is only a part is not the complete wheel. Which is only apart is not the whole umbrella. When it becomes whole, it becomes the wheel and the umbrella.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [05.03] Who Is Ill? - Who is Unhappy?
19.04.2007
There is third principle regarding this. Mahavira was asked, "Who is affected by unhappiness, the one who is unhappy or the one who is not unhappy?"
Mahavira said, "One who is unhappy is affected by unhappiness. One who is not unhappy is never affected by unhappiness."

Lord Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [05.04] Who Is Ill? - What Type Of Person - What Type Of Disease?
20.04.2007
Let us try to understand Mahavira's idea of health from these three points of view. The non-absolutism approach lays down that the organ and the one whose organ it is, should not be regarded as distinct. If they are regarded as distinct, they will form separate units. No organ is independent unit. The organ and the one whose organ it is are linked together.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [05.06] Who Is Ill? - Fifth Kind Of Pain
21.04.2007
The Acharyas have mentioned four kinds of pain: natural pain, physical pain, mental pain, sudden pain. The pain on account of an accident is sudden pain. Some one hit you with a stone, and you received an injury. That is a sudden pain. It has no relation either with the body or the mind. There is a natural pain, like the pain resulting from hunger and thirst. There is a Sanskrit phrase kshujjatharagnija pida "which refers to the pain due to digestion is hunger"

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [5.08.3] Technique - Contemplation Of Forbearance
18.04.2007
Here the word forbearance refers to one's ability for a voluntary self-control that helps one to endure physical pain, mental anguish or any other unpleasant vicissitudes of life with equanimity. It stresses self-controlled abstinence from impulsive action in face of grave provocation such as opposing or hostile action or views.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [5.08.4] Technique - Contemplation of Modesty
19.04.2007
Here the word modesty is used as an antonym of arrogance or haughtiness. It does not imply meekness or shyness but is a positive virtue of being gentle, kind and non-violent (not rough) in one's behaviour.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [6.01] Benefits - Mental Happiness
20.04.2007
Any wise person, before undertaking an exercise, will think about its result. A practitioner (being wise) will also do the same. He would like to know what the benefits are accruing from the practice of Preksa Dhyana. It is a reasonable expectation. Many benefits on various levels accrue from this practice. In this chapter we shall discuss briefly what benefits one may derive on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels by practising various techniques of Preksa system of meditation..

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [6.02] Benefits - Evidence of Religiosity
21.04.2007
Every one does desire to protect himself from the miseries accruing from sin, by seeking refuge in religion. That is, one wants to escape the consequences of sinful life. Bad habits, vicious mentality, anxiety, agitation and mental tension - all these result from a sinful life, but one wants to get rid of them. Everyone wants peace, harmony, freedom from tension, sympathy and friendship. This is why one desires to take refuge in religiousness.

The Quest For Truth - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
The Quest For Truth - 08.02 - The Path Of Sadhana - Kayotsarg
15.04.2007
Kabir expressed his feelings in his famous couplet, "When the ego existed, the guru did not and once the guru emerged, the ego had vanished. The reason is that the path of love is so narrow that it cannot accommodate two on it. Only one can traverse it, either my guru or me."

The Quest For Truth - 08.03 - The Path Of Sadhana - The Vibrations Of The Karmic Body
19.04.2007
That which we are seeing is the physical body. Within it there is the subtle body called tejas. That makes the physical body function and active. This is the source of vital energy. Scientists have developed such cameras as will photograph the aura. The definition in ancient times that that which breathes is living and that which does not is non-living is now outdated. When a man dies his nostril is blocked with cotton to check if he is living or dead. If the cotton moves then there is breath and the man is living. If it does not move it is assumed that he is dead. But this is outdated. The new definition of life is that whether there is breath or not, whether there is heartbeat or not, if the aura around a man breaks then he is dead.

The Quest For Truth - 08.04.1 - The Path Of Sadhana - Vital Breath (Oxygen) (1)
20.04.2007
The body experiences vibrations. The lungs purify the blood. The heart pumps it and then it is circulated through the entire body. If impure blood goes into the arteries then problems arise. It gives rise to dullness and lethargy. Pure blood gives strength to the body. It increases the capacity to work. The heart's job is to pump the blood, not to clean it. The lungs clean it. The blood circulates and in it a lot of impurities get mixed. The lungs remove the impurities and make it pure again. The lungs sieve the blood with the help of the vital energy. It removes the carbon-dioxide in the blood. As they reach the lungs the blood becomes blue. But after cleaning it regains its original colour. If the lungs get enough vital energy the blood is completely purified and if not then it is not completely purified.

The Quest For Truth - 08.04.2 - The Path Of Sadhana - Vital Breath (Oxygen) (2)
21.04.2007
Every time we think of holding the mind we also think of its running. We do not want to unleash our minds but when we think of holding it we are not able to stop it from running wild. Where we do not want it to go, it definitely goes. A disciple was learning meditation from his guru. One day the teacher said, "Go and meditate in isolation. Meditate with complete concentration. But remember that your practice will be successful only when you do not think of a monkey. If you think of a monkey then your practice will be broken." The disciple after bowing to the teacher went into isolation. He sat down to meditate and he could think of nothing else. His mind was inexorably linked to the monkey. His teacher had placed a poisonous insect in his head. The poor fellow tried repeatedly to forget it. But each time he tried, the monkey would reappear before his eyes. He fell into the trap of the prohibited and his meditation was not successful.

Geheimnisse des Geistes [11.1] - Leitfaden für das Aufsteigen der Energie (1)
20.04.2007

HereNow4U - Living Jainism Tour 2006 - 06.03 Ahimsa Yatra : Hariyal - Tamkor (3)
25.04.2007
The manifold impressions of this morning are difficult to put into words and images; nevertheless, we have compiled a selection thereof to transmit some facets of the atmosphere.

HereNow4U - Living Jainism Tour 2006 - 06.04 Ahimsa Yatra : Tamkor
26.04.2007
Shortly after arrival, the welcome function took place. Acharyashree, Yuvacharyashree, and Sadhvi Pramukhaji took their seats on stage in front of the huge gathering. Many dignitaries were present while others were about to arrive, all flocked to the assembly tent.

HereNow4U - Living Jainism Tour 2006 - 06.05 Tamkor
27.04.2007
Refreshed, we went for Guru Darshan. As usual, people surrounded Acharyashree and were eager to address him. He however was an island of equanimity, and so were Samanijis beside him. When we came near, an author presented his book to him, titled ‘In Quest of Solidarity’. Acharyashree attentively inspected it; on its cover was also his photo.

HereNow4U - Living Jainism Tour 2006 - 06.06 Good-bye Tamkor
28.04.2007
A beautiful Sunday came up in Tamkor. We nevertheless had to leave. When we took farewell, Acharyashree recited Mangal Path, and Yuvacharyashree made us experience the amazing functioning of Terapanth management.

Anuvrata - The Jaina Path to Self-Transformation and World Peace (1)
Dr. Sohan Lal Gandhi
25.04.2007
Anuvrata is a network of self-transformed people who volunteer to discipline themselves by accepting small vows and adhering to them out of conviction without expecting any reward for it. It is a movement of small vows or what we call a movement to rid society, nation and the world of moral filth and hatred. It is based on the view that the transformation of an individual into a responsible self-disciplined human being will lead naturally to the ushering in of a non-violent socio-political world order paving the way for the lasting peace in the world, which is torn by strife, terrorism and narrow nationalistic considerations. Selfishness seems to hold the people fast in its grip. It is being institutionalised rapidly and the outlook of the people is getting narrower and narrower.

Indian Temple Sculpture
John Guy
26.04.2007
This innovative new book is themed around Indian temple arts as instruments of worship – devotional sculptures which embody, through the combined authority of the aesthetic and the symbolic, powerful religious experiences. It examines Indian religious sculpture in the temple context – its cosmological meaning, its function within the architectural schema and its dynamic interactive role in worship. Accessible and multidisciplinary in its approach, Indian Temple Sculpture reveals the vivid traditions still in practice today, and opens up a world of understanding about Indian devotional art.

Anuvrata - The Jaina Path to Self-Transformation and World Peace (3)
Dr. Sohan Lal Gandhi
27.04.2007
The most important thing about the Movement is that it strives after the middle path steering clear of the two extremes of absolute asceticism (mahavratas) an unbridled materialism resulting in moral torpor. The Anuvrata Movement aims at ushering in an era of self-awakening - the antithesis of the Atomic Age.

Anuvrata - The Jaina Path to Self-Transformation and World Peace (4)
Dr. Sohan Lal Gandhi
28.04.2007
If we believe in religion, we must unite ourselves to stop the dance of violence and purge religion of the stigma that it generates more violence and hatred than love Anuvrata is one way. Acarya Tulasi makes an important point in his message. He says that seeds of non-violence should be sown in the minds of young people. Seville statement issued by the top scientists of the world in 1985 - the International year or Peace - also stresses on the same point. 'Both war and peace originate in the mind of man.' Let us strive to root out the seeds of violence that sprout in our minds with the help of Anuvrata.

Abstract Thinking - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Abstract Thinking [20.10] Anupreksha Of Truth - The Anuvrat of Truth
23.04.2007
According to certain thinkers, there can be no anuvrat (small vow) of truth, for truth is indivisible - it cannot be divided into parts. Violence constitutes one of the inevitabilities of life - some violence is involved in the very process of living. So one might take a small pledge for observing non-violence. But falsehood is not inevitable in life. Therefore there can be no anuvrat of truth-it can only be a mahavrat (a great vow).

Abstract Thinking [20.11] Anupreksha Of Truth - The Way To Purity In Speech - Truth
25.04.2007
The way to perfection in speech lies through devotion to truth. Those who have dedicated themselves to truth have progressed ahead, even though belatedly. Unwavering faith in truth always yields good results. It is basically a question of faith. Such a faith does not generally evolve; it perishes before it can develop. But if one always sticks to truth, one's word is endowed with tremendous power and it leads to perfection in speech: whatever is said then gets done!

Abstract Thinking [21.01] - Anupreksha Of Synthesis (1)
27.04.2007
All the elements constituting the world are in some way connected with one another. Neither two things in the world are exactly similar nor are they altogether dissimilar. We see a resemblance between certain things and no resemblance at all between certain other things. The cause thereof lies not in the reality of the things themselves, but in our way of looking at them. Two things appear to us to resemble each other when we are seeking resemblance, and when we are seeking non-resemblance, they appear to us to be quite different. Both resemblance and non-resemblance lie in a thing and we naturally find what we seek

Anekant : The Third Eye - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.13 Third Eye 1 - The Peak Of Numbers: Shirshaprahelika
23.04.2007
In the Jain agamas the computation of very high numbers has been explained. The name for that is shirshaprahelika. In that context, today's numbers seem very small. If to one number, two hundred and forty zeroes are added then we arrive at that figure. This is an outstanding number. When science went into the subtle details of mathematics, then shirshaprahelika was proved and was valued as a great find.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.14 Third Eye 1 - Sound Is Science's Great Gain
25.04.2007
Man will not be able to find truth until he moves towards the subtle modes of life. Until the vision of anekanta develops, movement in that direction is not possible.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.15 Third Eye 1 - The Anekantic View In Meditational Practice
27.04.2007
In meditation we need the anekantic view. Through it all problems would be solved. When we are dogmatic about one thing, then there is a problem.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [05.07] Who Is Ill? - Poking At The Patient
22.04.2007
This context, the principle is: looking at the patient and his disease, acquires significance. Treat the patient not his disease. Treat the one who possesses the organ, not the organ itself. If we think from the point of view of totality, if we think about the mind and the emotions, then we can go to the roots of many diseases. One person suffers from a heart ailment. Another person has cancer of stomach. Someone else is suffering from diabetes. These are terrible diseases. If we treat them only as the diseases of the body, it would have many defects. We shall have to go as far as the emotions. It would be probably possible to treat a disease promptly if we think from the point of view of the emotional make-up of the patient and the patient would recover very soon.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [05.08] Who Is Ill? - Healthy Person Does Not Fall Sick
23.04.2007
In this connection, let us think of preventing the disease. The Allopathic system regards germs, viruses etc. as the external factors resulting in illness. Except in the case of accidents, these are considered to be the main causes of the diseases affecting the body. Homeopathy attributes diseases to other causes. The nature cure system regards only one thing as the cause of diseases the heterogeneous substances in the stomach or in the body, when they combine, they become the cause of the diseases. When those heterogeneous substances get separated, it results in good health.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [05.09] Who Is Ill? - Adyavasaya And Health
24.04.2007
We can formulate a role that the extent to which there is subsidence of a person's kashaya-chakra, he would be less liable to catch a disease. The extent to which his kashaya chakra has a dominating influence, he would be more susceptible to diseases. We have witnessed and heard about many incidents in which the powerful kashaya-chakra has destroyed the person concerned.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [05.10] Who Is Ill? - Context Of Karma
25.04.2007
In this context, it is necessary to understand one particular provision of the principle of karma (act). The principle of karma is Sarvatmana Sarva-Savvenam Savve universally applicable. When a person is possessed with hatred, he is bound by the deluding karma. This is because he hates only because of delusion. It may be the bond of the deluding karma, but it would have, at the same time, seven or eight bonds of karma. If there is no bond of life-span karma, these would be the bonds of the seven acts.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [05.11] Who Is Ill? - Try To Recognise The Abhamandal (Aura of the body)
26.04.2007
Mahavira was asked a question, "Oh, Lord! What is the benefit of concentration of the mind?" Mahavira said, "The chitta remains under control by concentration of the mind". The surging impulses of the chitta would become purified. It is necessary to pay attention to what comes from within.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [05.12] Who Is Ill? - Total View
27.04.2007
Three principles promulgated with regard to health are very important:
1. The disease affects not a particular organ but the whole body.
2. Only a sick person is affected by a disease. A healthy person is never affected by any disease.
3. A disease comes as a whole, not in part.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [06.01] Doctrine Of Karma And Health (Karmavada and Svasthya)
28.04.2007
In the visible world, all thinking about health and the diseases is done only in terms of the body. Ayurveda recognizes three types of diseases resulting from the three humours of the body: vata (wind) pitta (bile) and shleshma (kaf, cough [phlegm]). Some acharyas of Ayurveda have also analysed diseases on the basis of karma. According to them, the roots of diseases also lie in meritorious and sinful deeds. Tajjo Rogah Karma-yogah. The diseases resulting from merit and sin is the disease resulting from karma.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [6.03] Benefits – Physical & Mental
23.04.2007
Practice of Preksa Dhyana will bring about changes in the chemistry of the body. For integrated development of personality, it is necessary to bring about radical changes in the body-chemistry, i.e. the chemical secretion in the body should be more balanced. The hormones of pituitary and adrenals are mainly responsible for this.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [6.04] Benefits – Psychical Benefits - Change in Habits
25.04.2007
Next, we consider the psychical benefits derived from meditation. The basic improvement is the change in habits i.e. transmutation of attitude and, behaviour. If one practises meditation systematically and regularly, it must have profound effect on one's emotional nature. The psychological distortions such as cruelty, retaliation, greed; hate, jealousy, deceit, haughtiness and aggression are sure to be reduced; in intensity as a result of meditation.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [6.05] Benefits – Psychical Benefits - Change of Heart
27.04.2007
The change of heart, thus, positively results from the perception of psychic centres. There are a number of centres in our body. The meditational exercise could be in the form of perception of individual centre or in the form of collective perception or cyclic perception. In any case, as soon as our psychic attention is focused on a centre, its activity begins to become balanced and its chemical output is changed.

The Quest For Truth - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
The Quest For Truth - 08.05 - The Path Of Sadhana - Pran
23.04.2007
Our vital energy (pran) and oxygen are not one. We inhale matter through oxygen. We inhale and exhale - again we inhale and exhale. This order keeps repeating itself. Pran is our life force. It is in our entire body. As long as we have pran we are alive. If there is no pran there is no life.

The Quest For Truth - 08.06 - The Path Of Sadhana - Pranayam (Yogic Breathing Exercise)
25.04.2007
Pranayam consists of three activities: to inhale fully (purak), to exhale fully (rechak) and to hold the breath internally or externally (kumbhak). In exercises involving oxygen the vital energy is charged and therefore pranayam is useful. The consciousness mixed with vital energy gets developed in direct proportion to the availability of fuel in the form of oxygen.

The Quest For Truth - 09.01 - The Quest For Truth
27.04.2007
All the questions, problems, complications that arise in the path towards the quest for truth are created by those who see only one aspect. If one believer of truth believes that A represents truth and B is untruth, then there is another man who believes that the B represents the truth and A is untruth. In this way, by accusing each other's truth as untrue they create problems in the quest for truth. They are not willing to accept reality as it is. They want to establish truth from words and texts.

Maryada Mahotsav - 143rd - [18] Day 3 - The Main Event - Part I
R.K. Bengani
04.05.2007
Thursday the 25th January 2007. Seventh day of bright half of Indian month Magh. Dear Readers, a branch of Indian philosophy which believes in creator God states that God created this universe on this day of Indian Calendar. That’s why this day is known as achla saptami (earth seventh) or surya saptami (sun seventh). Jains do not subscribe to the creator god theory. But what is a well known fact that on this day Acharya Bhiksu created a whole new world of spiritual opportunities when he penned the final disciplinary guidelines for his terapanthi followers.

When our friends Sanjeev and Shivani Bothra came to Balwantji and Premji Mehta’s home, we did not figure out what our four friends’ proposal to make a short visit to town has to do with spirituality. Duality And Consciousness
Acharya Mahaprajna
29.04.2007
Preksha meditation develops the feeling of equality and a consciousness free from duality. This is a new phase of consciousness when the duality of gain and loss, pleasure and pain comes to an end.
There is nothing new in the world. That which has grown old assumes a new form. When what has been lost to memory reappears, it is called new. For example, the first experiment in preksha meditation, conducted by Bharata, remained hidden for a number of centuries.

For Answer, Look Within - Integrated Personality Holds Key To Happiness
Acharya Mahaprajna
30.04.2007
The meaningful solution of the problem is to develop an integrated personality. Psychology deals with dual and non-dual personalities. A disintegrated and split personality is very dangerous and it is vital to evolve an integrated personality. Some people are focused on religion only, while others are focused on community. This gives only a limited vision. There is a need to have a balanced approach towards religion and community for an integrated personality.

Message From Acharya Mahapragya On The Occasion Of Mahavir Jayanti
29.04.2007
It is a matter of great joy for me to wish for your spiritual development at the onset of the new year. I believe that a person's spiritual development is also absolutely necessary along with his material development. Let us all resolutely assert that peace is impossible without spirituality. The first lesson of peace is the development of spiritual awareness and its practical form is ahimsa. We can find a cause-effect relationship between ahimsa and peace.

Jain Manuscript Cataloge Project - Launch at the Buckingham Palace
30.04.2007
A member of The Royal family will be launching the three volume Jain Manuscript Catalogue of The British Library collection at Buckingham Palace on 15th May.
This catalogue has taken just over fifteen years to become a reality from when the idea to create one was conceived. Apart from the enormity of the task, the Institute had to overcome several problems. First one was the untimely death of Prof Chandrabhal Tripathi within two years of starting the project. Number of manuscripts in the collection was a gross underestimate - the workload increased four fold.

Abstract Thinking - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Abstract Thinking [21.02] - Anupreksha Of Synthesis (2)
29.04.2007
The principle of like and unlike is of the essence of the reality of a thing. Thus, no realistic view can be one-sided, altogether unrelated and absolute.
Lord Mahavira propounded the doctrine of synthesis between both the spheres - of thought and of conduct. In the sphere of thought, not only has that tradition been preserved, but also further developed. But in the sphere of conduct, the tradition has sunk into oblivion; it has been even neglected.

Abstract Thinking [21.03] - Anupreksha Of Synthesis - Neither Wholly Contradictory Nor Wholly Non-Contradictory
30.04.2007
Anekanta sought a meeting-point between the two and expounded the rule that there is no total contradiction between the animate and the inanimate, nor is there a total non-contradiction. We cannot say that the animate is wholly contrary to the in animate, nor can we say that the inanimate is altogether contrary to the animate. Had they been totally in contradictory, the soul and the body would have existed apart from each other. The soul and the body are linked together because they are not wholly contradictory to each other.

Abstract Thinking [21.04] - Anupreksha Of Synthesis - The Transcendental And The Empirical
02.05.2007
Anekanta has expounded and presented before us both points-of-view - the subtle and the gross. One of these is the transcendental view and the other is the empirical view. In order to know the subtle truths, one must take recourse to the transcendental; and for gross rules one must rely upon the empirical view. When both these approaches are relative, coordinated, we arrive at the truth that diversity and unity are not different, but synthesized with each other.

Abstract Thinking [21.05] - Anupreksha Of Synthesis - Realization Of The Identity Of All Things
04.05.2007
Attributes are of two kinds - general and particular. General qualities are common to both the animate and the inanimate. The soul, though conscious, is yet intangible. And inanimate objects can be immaterial, too.  Dharmastikaya, Adharmastikaya, are inanimate, yet immaterial. In this respect, both the conscious soul and the inanimate dharmastikaya are alike. Both are immaterial. Dharmastikaya is substance, but not material; it is immaterial. We often say that the soul is immaterial. But is not dharmastikaya immaterial too? There is a great deal of similarity between the two. In fact there is greater similarity then dissimilarity. He, who sticks to the gross mode, embraces in equivalence, losing sight of the common identity. That is why controversy, communalism and conflict arise; gross modes constitute the basis of their existence. In the outer world there is greater dissimilarity than similarity, whereas in the inner world there is greater likeness than unlikeness. This is what we wish to accomplish through the process of meditation - to develop such an outlook, to make out intelligence so perfect and pure as to enable us to witness the similarity behind all dissimilarity.

Anekant : The Third Eye - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.16 Third Eye 1 - Awakening Of The Kundalini
29.04.2007
Kundalini is the energy of our bio-electrical body. It is the energy of luster, effulgence and light. It is the entire body's temperature. The heat of the bio-electrical body is the kundalini. It is always awakened. It can become more potent and there are many ways to achieve that, not just one.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.17 Third Eye 1 - Different People: Different Solutions
30.04.2007
Meditation does not suit some people. Yogasana and pranayama does not suit some people. This is because each person 's body composition is different. The mental level of the mind is also not similar.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 4.18 Third Eye 1 - Desisting Dogmatism: Anekanta
02.05.2007
It is greatly necessary for the contemporary world, that man's third eye opens. The third eye is that of anekanta.

Anekanta : The Third Eye 5.01 Third Eye 2 - The Location Of The Third Eye
04.05.2007
If we reflect on this truth with sharir sastra , manasa sastra and kama sastra, then the truth becomes all the more clear. To clarify this truth also, anekanta is of use. While reflecting on any truth if we consider only one aspect of it then even truth can turn false. Only when we look at it from its different perspectives and answer different questions arising thereby can we say we are talking about truth. Anekanta is the third eye because it is different from the two physical ones.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [06.02] Doctrine Of Karma And Health - Events And Happiness - Unhappiness
29.04.2007
Our body is the medium through we feel happiness and misery. That is a fact. But we shall have to go beyond it. It is necessary to know how and due to what reasons happiness and misery are experienced. Events are events. It brings neither happiness nor unhappiness by itself. When our consciousness is linked with that event, we experience happiness and misery. Any event, by itself, does not cause happiness and misery.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [06.03] Doctrine Of Karma And Health - Vipaka Is Relative To Medium
30.04.2007
The fruition of karma is relative to the medium. Let us understand with the help of an illustration that in the case of some karmas, the vipaka is mental derangement. In that situation, the mati and the intellect act in the contrary manner. Only through the metamorphosis of the mati, the intellect and the emotion the karma yields its own fruit. The karma cannot yield the fruit except through a medium.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [06.04] Doctrine Of Karma And Health - Context Of Asat Vedaniya Karma
01.05.2007
Diseases are of two kinds: (1) sudden and (2) result of karma. Winter or summer season comes and people get various seasonal illnesses. Supposing a man gets involved in an accident and is injured. This happens as a result of the asat vedaniya karma. The sat vedaniya karma is not rising. The sat vedaniya karma has already brought the asat vedaniya to fruition. This is a process. It is known as the sudden disease. This may have resulted from factors like vata in terms of the Ayurveda or virus in terms of modern medical science. That too is a disease, which has appeared suddenly. It brings the asat vedaniya karma forcibly on the surface.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [06.05] Doctrine Of Karma And Health - Disease And Karma
02.05.2007
Disease and karma are related to ethics. How do we get bondage the asat vedaniya karma and sat vedaniya karma? This subject has been discussed in many Agamas. The causes of the bondage resulting from sat vedaniya karma are as follows...

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [06.06] Doctrine Of Karma And Health - Spiritual Disease - External Disease
03.05.2007
Diseases are of two types: those that can be cured by external measures and those that can be cured by internal measures. Diseases are divided into two categories on the basis of the Jain Agamas spiritual diseases and external diseases.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [06.07] Doctrine Of Karma And Health - How Does One Have Vedana?
04.05.2007
The vedaniya karmas are of two types: Sat vedaniya karma and asat vedaniya karma. How does one experience this? The body is one factor. That cognition comes through the body. The experience of both the sat and the asat vedaniya karmas comes through the body. If the energy of the body is in good state, then there would be the experience of the sat vedaniya. If the energy of the body is in disarray, then these would be the experience of the asat vedaniya, which would bring the experience of pain.

Lord Mahavira's Scripture Of Health [06.08] Doctrine Of Karma And Health - Media Of Sensation
05.05.2007
There are four media of the sensations the body, the mind, the speech and the karma (act). The body, the mind and the speech are related to the vibrations of the body. The other background is provided by the karma and its vibrations. The karma is an operation of spiritual energy.

Mind Beyond MInd - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Mind Beyond Mind [00] Introduction
01.05.2007
For thousands of years the human mind has been a controversial subject and it is likely to be so in the future also for those who try to control it. However, the mind ceases to be a problem for those who are capable of entering into the self. Those given to spiritual sadhana view the mind and its problems in a different light. For them the mind is only an instrument. There is no use quarrelling with the instrument. The root cause of all our evils lies elsewhere.

Mind Beyond Mind [01.1] See and Think (1)
02.05.2007
The world we live in appears to us sometimes as a unity and at other times as a medley of discordant elements. As a unity it inspires in us a sense of self-certainty and self-assurance. As a diversity it confuses us and creates philosophical doubts and we become curious to know the causes of things.

Mind Beyond Mind [01.2] See and Think (2)
03.05.2007
What for should we see? This question is irrelevant. Consciousness, by its very nature, is a seer. In its purest form it does not need a medium. It is only when the mind casts its shadow on it that it needs a medium of perception. Thinking is a function of the intellect. The intellect, to use a figurative language, is a ray emanating from consciousness. Thinking is, therefore, the light of consciousness.

Mind Beyond Mind [02.1] Season the Body (1)
04.05.2007
We must first construct a powerhouse before we could generate electricity. Then we must spread a network of wires through which electric current could pass. Lastly, we must fix up a bulb in order that it may burn and produce light. The bulb is as important as the wires and the powerhouse.

Mind Beyond Mind [02.2] Season the Body (2)
05.05.2007
The Kayotsarga posture in which the body is completely immobilized may appear to be a surprising feat. Bahubali, the son of Bhagavana Rsabha stood for twenty months at a stretch in this posture. It is narrated that grass grew thick under his feet, creepers climbed over his head and birds built their nests on it. And yet he stood motionless and regardless of what had happened to him.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [6.06] Benefits - Relaxation (Kayotsarga) - Four Stages
29.04.2007
In the first state of relaxation, one learns to keep still and stop all voluntary movements. The turmoil due to restlessness vanishes and an acute sense of relaxation and relief from tensions is experienced. There is progressive improvement in psychosomatic diseases as hypertension and in due course this becomes measurable.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [6.07] Benefits - Relaxation (Kayotsarga) - Relief from Tension & Freedom from Turmoil
01.05.2007
The most obvious and measurable benefit from relaxation is elimination of tension. Anybody who practises regular relaxation will get rid of his tensions in a short time and would remain relaxed, calm and unperturbed in any situation. It not only relieves tensions but also revitalises the organism. Gone is the heaviness and congestion, and the practitioner enjoys a feeling of well-being and lightness. More significant is the relief from mental load - heaviness. Regular practitioner never suffers from mental disorders.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [6.08] Benefits - Relaxation (Kayotsarga) - Revitalisation of the Organism
03.05.2007
On the physical level, benefits of relaxation are obvious and measurable. The sensory nerves are always loaded with the continuous task of collecting and dispatching information. Motor nerves are similarly engaged in transmitting messages from the brain to muscles, glands and other tissues and producing action. The work is tiring and there is no respite.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [6.09] Benefits - Benefit Of Relaxation - Relief From Tension
04.05.2007
The most obvious and measurable benefit from relaxation is elimination of tension. Anybody who practises regular relaxation will get rid of his tensions in a short time and would remain relaxed, calm and unperturbed in any situation.

Preksa Dhyana - Theory And Practice [6.10] Benefits - Benefit Of Relaxation - Freedom from Turmoil
05.05.2007
Normally our body is constantly agitated and in turmoil. Electric impulses keep the muscles magnetised and contracted. There is no rest. Relaxation starts when there is suspension of all movements of the skeletal muscles.

The Quest For Truth - by  Acharya Mahaprajna
The Quest For Truth - 10.01 - Idealism And Realism (1)
29.04.2007
Jain philosophy has taken both these aspects of truth: idealism and materialism and explained them relatively. The first half of their explanation presents the analysis of the school of idealism. Instead of believing that there is nothing beyond the consciousness, it may be believed that there is nothing beyond reality. Reality can be made the point of reckoning, not the consciousness.

The Quest For Truth - 10.02 - Idealism And Realism (2)
01.05.2007
When we are studying commonness, we can see supreme existence and when we are studying specificity we can see the other existence. This is not a dimension of the supreme existence. It is a dimension of our perspective. We can never see both the visions together. Sometime we see commonness through the specific and sometimes the specific through commonness.

The Quest For Truth - 11.01 - Changing Permanence (1)
03.05.2007
After reflection and perception a principle has been established. That principle is called Changing Permanence (parinanityitavat). According to this principle no substance in this world is forever permanent or impermanent. Every substance has an intrinsic harmony between the permanent and the impermanent.

The Quest For Truth - 11.02 - Changing Permanence (2)
05.05.2007
Substance is the base for modes. Substance is not manifest. Modes are manifest. Where are we able to see the substance? We see only the modes. All our knowledge is about the modes. There is a man before me. He is a substance. I do not know him. Of all his different modes I know one of them and through that mode I know that he is a man. When I see him with my eyes his form and colour are the basis on which I say he is a man. When I hear him speak, from his ability to speak, I infer he is a man. I am not able to see his entire being. I know a mango by the smell, colour or taste. I do not have any means of knowing it completely. When the eyes are seeing then smell and taste become less important. When the sense of smell is greater then the colour is forgotten. It is in this context of totality that I say that we do not perceive the substance. We see only the modes and on the basis of the modes draw our inferences.
