Dear Friends,
I am here with an appeal for some financial support for a genuine non
government organisation striving hard for the betterment of persons
suffering from Hemophilia. As you all may be aware that Hemophilia is an
incurable genetic bleeding disorder. A person suffering from Hemophilia
gets internal bleeds which cause swelling and trmendous pain in their
affected joints and muscles. The only treatment is infusion of imported
factor injections which again is a temporary treatment. I am not here to
ask you for funds for these expensive injections, but we can definitely
be of some help in the rehabilitation process.
The Hemophilia societies have been doing a great job in providing
treatment at the most affordable rates but still there are many who just
cannot afford it. We appeal to you to kindly contribute financially for
the uplifment of these patients. Your funds could help them in starting
some small business of their own which could earn them their living. All
the donations coming from abroad are fully exempted from Income Tax. You
can send in donations in your own currency in the name of Hemophilia
Society of Maharashtra (Pune Chapter). For the people staying in India,
they could contribute by sending a cheque or DD in the name of
Hemophilia Society of Maharashtra (Pune Chapter). Donations given to the
society are exmpted from Income tax under section 80(g) of I.T. Act. The
address of the society is as follows :-
Hemophilia Society of Maharashtra (Pune Chapter)
Lohade Hospital, Telco Road,
Chinchwad Station, Pune - 411 019.
Maharashtra, INDIA
The society is registered under Societies Act and Maharashtra Public
Trust Act.
Looking forward to your helping hand in easing the lives of these
unfortunate people. You can also write to Mr. Rahul on
ihc_2000@... for any further details. Rahul is a Jain and is
also suffering from Hemophilia. He is associated with this Society.
Regards,
Mahavir Sanglikar

Hi,
This is a note I received at work. Please pass it along.
Someone is sending out a very cute screen saver of the Budweiser Frogs.
If you download it, you will lose everything! Your hard drive will crash and
someone from the Internet will get your screen name and password!
DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!
It just went into circulation yesterday, as far as we know. Please
distribute this message. This is a new, very malicious virus and not many
people know about it. This information was announced yesterday morning from
Microsoft. Please share it with everyone that might access
the Internet.
Once again, pass this along to EVERYONE in your address book so that this
may be stopped. AOL has said this is a very dangerous virus and that there
is NO remedy for it at this time.
Please practice cautionary measures and forward this to all your on-line
friends.
Dear friends,
It is seen now'er days that many of our jain friends
eat eggs saying that it is veg.,how can it be veg.,it
is non-veg and we have to change this attitude and
stop our jain friends from eattine eggs.

You may not be aware of the tragedy that is happening at this very minute in India due to the severe drought and resulting famine. Many animals have already died and now even human beings are dying. Here's an article from the Times of India of 27 April 2000 for info.
I would urge you to consider ways of effectively helping those in need in a manner that is consistent with Jain principles. Unfortunately time is not on our side. The situation will keep getting worse until the monsoons start in late June (if they arrive). That is a period of 2 whole months to wait. Many will not survive that without help.
Please consider what you can do to help and act quickly without violating Jain principles.
ANJARIA (Gujarat): Central granaries might have opened up for the drought-affected areas in Gujarat but for this village in Sabarkantha - where two people died of starvation on Tuesday - it's a case of far too little, far too late. For the past week, the BJP government has clung to the fiction that Gujarat's people may be thirsty but they are certainly not hungry. Chief minister Keshubhai Patel said in Gandhinagar on Wednesday that all reports of starvation deaths were false.
He should have come to Anjaria.
Saheba Bumbadia and his seven-year-old daughter, Sunita, were returning from relief work when they collapsed on the same road they were helping to build. Their hut was barely 150 metres away but even that was too far. They had been living on half a corn rotla a day for the past one week and had only one cup of black tea for breakfast on Tuesday.
Both Saheba and Sunita died about 1 pm on Tuesday. Yet, when this reporter reached Anjaria at 4 am the next day, their bodies had still not been sent for a post-mortem. They had been placed on a cot under a huge neem tree next to the spot where they died. Villagers were trying desperately to drive away the stench of decay with incense.
More than 18 hours later, when this reporter went to the public health centre (PHC) at Poshina, the mamlatdar was only just getting ready to go and get the body. Local officials - presumably on orders from the top - are trying to ensure the Anjaria deaths are not seen as a case of starvation. The first thing they did on Tuesday was shift Saheba's wife, Hansa, and her four remaining children to the PHC at Poshina claiming she had diarrhoea because of food poisoning. Obviously, their likely line of defence will be that the family ate well but not wisely.
However, an emaciated Hansa told this paper from her hospital bed that she had been living on half a rotla a day. There had not been a grain of wheat or rice in the house for more than a month, she added, except for the bowlful they bought once in a while. Nevertheless, officials claim rather fancifully that she ate mango subzi from an aluminium vessel which caused the poisoning.
If the government doesn't get its act together soon, villages like Anjaria may see more starvation deaths than the country's conscience can digest. The tribals simply don't have money to buy food and have cultivated no crop as the monsoon failed last year. And relief projects are failing to provide the income they are supposed to. Union agriculture minister Sunderlal Patwa told Parliament on Wednesday that 400,000 people are in food-for-work programmes and that the minimum wage is Rs 60. Local officials are more modest, claiming they pay Rs 30 a day. But stop at any of the relief works and the labourers will tell you they don't get a paisa over Rs 10.
Add to this the fact that Poshina's ration shop opens only twice a month. Tribals here say they have to buy grains from the black market. A scheme to sell 12.5 kg of rice at Rs 2 a kg has been launched but the tribals don't get more than five kg once in a while. The shop-owner keeps the villagers' ration cards with him and fills up the amount at will.

Jainism is the world's oldest living religion. It is the one and only one
scientific and logical religion. It is the only religion
respects not only human being but also all types of living beings. That is
why many people in western countries are studying this unique religion and
joining as followers.
But what is happening in India? Why we are just 4 millions in the
population of 100 crores?
We were 15 crores at a time, then declined to 4 crores and now we are just 4
millions. Within few decades, we will not exist at all.
We speak about Jainism as a world religion but why our religion has become
property of few people?
The Digambars and Shwetambars are fighting for temples and teerths with each
others. They should know that hundreds of old teerths and temples are
converted into Hindu temples and teerths. Can Digambers and Shwetambars come
together and fight for regaining such temples & teerths?
The organizations like Anup Mandal beat Jain monks, distruct Jain idols and
temples and we do not react. Are we impotent?
Constitution of India has given us some special rights as we are a minority
community. According to a right we can have 50% reservations for Jain
students in our educational institutions. We can appoint 100% staff from
our community. We could not use this right to create jobs for Jains and
making thousand of doctors, engineers and professors from our community. Now
the Central Government of India is saying no to this facility.
Jains will not be counted as a separate religion in the census of 2001. It
is happening in the year of Bhagwan Mahavir's 2600th Jayanti.
But we have nothing to do with such things. We have to fight with one
another.(Because we can not dare to fight with others.) We have to build new
temples. (Where the number of Jain idols have already more than total Jain
population) We have to work for protection of animals, birds and insects.
(We have nothing to do with human being)
It will go on untill we wake up. It will go on untill we do not know the
importence of unity
We do not know who are our friends and who are foes. We must know it
otherwise we will be no more.
Awake! Awake!!

I do not think the building more temples will bring
back jainism. We already have a lot of temples and no
one to manage them. Lot's of the temples are not being
taken care of and more people are building it just for
showing off. They want to get their name in the
community. What we need to do is do community service.
Jains are one of the most affluent and educated group
of people in the world. We need to concentrate more on
community service instead of building temples. That's
is the only way that jainism is going to be
recognized. In India millions of people go hungry and
do not have even the basic necessities of life. We can
build more hospitals and schools and provide food for
the poor and the needy. That is the way we can get
people to recognized us. This is the way that
religions like christian has been followed all around
the world. In gujarat the swaminaryans are doing the
same. They are helping the people during the drought
and other natural calamities. We can probably do the
same and maybe then people will follow our religion.
This is what our religion is all about, helping the
needy. Please think about this.

Encounter Milk – its impact on Health, Cruelty, and Pollution
Ayurveda actually lists milk as one of the ‘five white poisons’. She has
stirred a hornet's nest with her campaign against milk. Even hardcore veggies
have attacked Maneka Gandhi and religious leaders have openly come out
to contradict her. Curiously, on her side now is global research and modern
science, of which she has been a long-term critic. They are the ones who
are defending her now.
You have come out very strongly against milk. Why are you so hostile
to it?
There are three reasons.
People’s health is compromised by drinking milk
Cruelty and
Pollutants in milk
Would you like to explain why you think milk is unhealthy?
There is this belief that milk is a complete food and an important source
of protein, iron and calcium.
Milk has no iron, however it also blocks its absorption.
The ability of the body to absorb calcium from milk is barely 32%. Whereas
the body can absorb, 65% from cabbage and 69% from cauliflower.
Milk has less protein than most vegetables.
Even if we assume it contains more protein, it would be useless for human
beings. Because human beings require only 4 to 5 percent of their daily
calorie intake in proteins and the daily consumption of Indian bread (Chapattis)
and potatoes would give more protein than the requirements. So milk
is not the best food in the world as it has been touted for generations?
Milk is very difficult to digest particularly for Asian and African.
Why do I not eat plastic? The reason is; I have no enzyme to digest it.
We do not have lactose in our body and so we cannot digest lactose. If
we cannot digest milk, how do we get any of its ingredients?
Apart from this, milk has something called the IGF-1. All cancer studies
show that when IGF-1 rises in the body one gets cancer. All the IGF-1 in
milk stays in the body, making you prone to cancer. It is also a very strong
cause of asthma decease. In fact, doctors recommend asthma patients to
avoid milk and milk products.
The problem with doctors in India is that they learn no nutrition in
medical colleges. So they have a limited knowledge of food. Their knowledge
of nutrition comes from the same source as yours and mine: Grandmothers
and teachers. Add to this the confusion caused by our local religious leaders,
particularly the ones who espouse vegetarianism.
What is specifically wrong in milk? What is specifically harmful?
The calcium contained in milk actually becomes a health hazard as undigested
portions of it are deposited in the urinary system and become kidney stones.
Another condition that milk aggravates rather than alleviates is osteoporosis
or bone loss. Studies have shown that it is excess protein rather than
lack of calcium that causes osteoporosis. So the more milk you drink, the
more you are prone to osteoporosis. Countries like Sweden that have
the highest milk consumption also have the highest incidence of osteoporosis.
Another misconception is that milk helps ulcers. Ulcers are caused by
the corrosion of the stomach lining. When you drink milk it gives you immediate
pain relief. But that is only temporary. Milk actually causes acidity and
further destroys the stomach lining.
Also, ulcer patients who are treated with dairy products are found to
be 2 to 6 times more prone to heart attacks. This seems only logical because
milk is designed to be the food on which a calf increases its body weight
4 times over in one month! It is so naturally high in fat that it leads
to obesity, the cause of all modern disease. Ayurveda actually lists milk
as one of the five white poisons.
Indians have been drinking milk for centuries. All of them did not fall
sick.
It depends on what you call illness. Most people disregard arthritis,
osteoporosis, asthma, headaches, and indigestion as normal for the body
and cancer as an act of God.
By looking at milk as evil, are we not turning our back on our tradition
and culture?
For thousands of years people thought the sun went around the earth.
Copernicus was the first person who said it did not. There was a huge backlash
against him. The Indian tradition also had sati (cremating widow with her
husband’s dead body) and thugee and opium eating. Should they be legal
now?
I have written a book on Hindu names for which I had to read every single
Hindu scripture (sastra). Nowhere is there any milk drinking mentioned.
There is ghee (liquid butter) mentioned and that too for havans (fire).
Unfortunately our memories are short and the things we are most adamant
about are those we know the least about. Dr Spock was the guru for
child nutrition, now apologizes for having advocated milk and says that
children must be kept away from it.
Dr Kurien has described the dairy industry as the gentle industry. You
claim it is just the opposite?
The dairy industry is not gentle. The fact that supplies cater to demand
makes the cow the ultimate victim. It may have been gentle when each household
had its own cow and treated it as a member of the family. This is no longer
true.
How is milk produced now in India?
The cow is forced into yearly pregnancies. After giving birth she is
milked for 10 months but will be artificially inseminated during her third
month so that she is milked even when she is pregnant. The demanded of
production of milk is more than her body can give. So she starts breaking
down body tissue to produce milk. The result is an illness called ketosis.
Most of the day the cow is tied up in a narrow stall usually wallowing
in her own excrement. She gets mastitis because the hands that milk her
are rough and usually unclean. She gets rumen acidosis from bad food and
lameness. She is kept alive with antibiotics and hormones. Each year 20
per cent of these dairy cows are sent illegally by truck and train to slaughter
houses. Or they are starved to death by letting them loose in the cities.
It is no secret that the slaughter house in Goa was constructed by Amul
Dairy. No cow lives out her normal life cycle. She is milked, made
sick and then killed. Even worse happens to her child. The male calves
are tied up and starved to death. Or sent to the slaughter houses. It is
not by chance that a calf is no longer called bachda in India. It is called
katra, which means one who is to be killed. Even Dr Kurien admits that
in Mumbai every year 80,000 calves are forcibly put to death.
But milkmen (doodhwalas) love their cows. They live off them.
Have you seen how cows are milked?
In the villages they practice phukan, a method of milking a cow. A stick
is poked into the cow's uterus and wiggled, causing her intense pain. Villagers
believe this leads to more milk.
In the cities they are given two injections of oxytocin every day to
make the milk come faster. This gives her labor pains twice a day. Her
uterus develops sores and makes her sterile prematurely. Oxytocin is banned
for use on animals but it is sold in every cigarette shop around a dairy.
Every illiterate milkman knows the word. In human beings, oxytocin causes
hormonal imbalances, weak eyesight, miscarriages, and cancer.
Recently, Gujarat started raiding dairies for oxytocin. In one day,
they found 350,000 ampoules in just Ahmedabad!
You mentioned pollution in milk. What does that mean?
The ICMR did research on milk for 7 years and took thousands of samples
from across India. What did they find?
Large amounts of DDT, poisonous pesticides called HCH. Under the food
adulteration act only 0.01 mg/kg is allowed of HCH. They found 5.7 mg as
an average!
They found arsenic, cadmium and lead. This causes kidney damage, heart
disease, brain damage and cancer.
Their findings were based on 50,000 samples and the report was released
at a press conference. What did Dr Kurien and the Operation Flood people
have to say? More samples should have been taken!
Other things put in your milk is sewage water, vegetable oil, and liquid
soap. In some cases earthworms are put in because they excrete slime which
increases the density of the milk!
You have said that drinking milk is drinking the cow's blood?
Milk and blood come from the same source; the body cells of the cow.
Every time you drink a glass of milk, remember it comes from a sad, suffering
mother whose own child was killed before her eyes and who herself will
be killed when she dries up.
Won't the stoppage of milk lead to thousands being unemployed?
A large number of people are dependent on smuggling, thievery, begging,
drug pushing, gun running and terrorism. Do we buy their products to help
them?
What is the substitute for milk?
What is the substitute to a placebo? Anything else such as Soya bean
milk, all green vegetables, and lentils (dal). My son has never drunk milk
in his life. He is 6 feet and has never been sick a single day!
