My xjs has a problem in that it accelerates on its own. I have had
this fixed a few times but when the weather turns cold it goes back to
this. I can be at a complette stop and when I let my foot off of the
brake and do not press the accelerator at all by the time I am at the
end of the block I am at 25-30 miles per hour. Does anyone have a
permanent solution other than shooting the car?
Hi ya'll,
I just bought a '96 xjs and the alarm system is bugging me.
The way it seems to work is that after the ignition is turned off a
door, the bonnet or trunk can be opened within a minute or so but
after that if you want to open any of these, even if you have not
locked them, you must turn the key in the ignition.
Well this is a real pain in times when you maybe just want to get
something out or put something into the car. I read the manual and it
appears that this is how it is supposed to work.
Am I doing something wrong? Without completely disconnecting the
alarm system how do I get the alarm to engage only when I lock the car?
thanks
hi all
i have an xjs v12 in pretty good condition overall the one real
problem i have is that the head lining has dropped and the foam and
fiber backing are in very poor shape can anyone give me some ideas
as of the best way to deal with this
thanks

Your list seems accurate -- from what I have experienced with my 1998 XK-8 convertible and read about on various sites.
Another item is the lower front wishbone bushings. There is a new design that is supposed to last, see TSB 204-11. The interior rear view mirror is also failure prone.
Some other TSBs of possible interest are: 501-33 - conv. top, 303-54 - thermostat, 303-30 -timing chain.
I understand most of these (and other problems) were corrected by the 2000/1 model year.
Complex machines are prone to have "issues" but are (usually) worth the aggravation -- I keep telling myself!
Cheers,
Bill

Subject: [jaguar-cars] XK8 known issues
Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2005 20:01:10 -0600
Does anyone know if the following issues are indeed real problems for early
XK8's (1997 to 1999)?
1) Water pump impeller is made of plastic and eventually cracks, leaving
with insufficient (if any) water circulation causing overheating, if not
meltdown
2) Cam chain tensioners do not last over 60,000 miles and eventually chain
skips or brakes and then hell brakes loose in the engine
3) Hydraulic fluid in convertible roof mechanism gets too thick and gooey
over time and clogs valves and pump in the system, preventing roof
opening/closing
4) The recent recall for fuel throttle bodies has the dealer replaced the
throttle bodies with newer units that actually work worse than the originals
but now better comply with EPA standards
5) Any others?
Thanks.
Charles
Why are you trying to gather reports on that issue?

I may need to replace the front suspension struts in the XK8.
I see the Tire Rack sells Koni units that will fit the car.
Does anyone know if these are any good?
Can anyone recommend a good product and a source for it (other than going to
the Jag dealer)?
Thanks

i know this is bit late this is the first time iv turned the lptop on since xmas and its stupid reply but have you checked the rotor arm and cap( i know some time round then they went over to inductive loops so you might have these ) but it seems like prob my mini had !!
Dudes
I have a 1992 XJ6 4L auto thats just not running right.
It would loose power, just briefly, for no apparent reason. A quick squeeze
on the go pedal would restore power then it would run ok for months. I did
on a couple of occasions get VCM codes for temp (fixed faulty connector) and
TPS (cleared + did not return) but no faults recorded at this time. In
october, after a couple of these episodes it lost power almost completely
and became undriveable. I went through the manual (Haynes, and not there
best work!) checking voltages on the various sensors (temp/throttle/MAF) and
just as I finished checking the last one (which, like the rest was ok) the
car decanted its oil all over my drive.
I eventually got a garage to look at it (and thats all they did for 34 of
the 37 days they had it), described the sequence of events and they said it
would be the head gasket. They fixed the oil leak (possibly), and, several
week later, the head gasket and told me the car was running, road tested and
ready to collect. After I paid they said it needed a new battery, plugs (I
told them that!), possibly plug leads and was misfiring. Anyway, long story
short, does anyone recognise the symptoms of the remaining faults.
Starts fine, idles ok, if driven gently will appear to cruise up to fifty no
problem and be fine if you stay there. If driven a little more harshly you
can tell that the power delivery is not as instant as it used to be, this
car would throw you backwards if floored from a standing start.
Get passed fifty and everything changes. Acceleration seems to be more
instantanious (though not right) but the second that you lift off the pedal
(ie upon reaching the speed limit) the car seems to "misfire" and or
"judder", its very hard to say which. Press on again and it stops.
Basically, so long as your pushing on the car seems ok.
If you rev and release the pedal whilst stationary there is a slight misfire
at the rev peak so misfiring is definitely involved somewhere. Whilst in
motion it feels more mechanical... like something was instantly grabbing
then releasing the propshaft or maybe the brakes were jabbing on and off.
Its very wierd and dificult to describe but I hope thats got it across.
Points to note... all bar one plug lead has been checked (wk in progress),
plugs have been replaced (2nd set in a month) I've only checked once so I'm
about to check again but I believe, if driven aggresively with manual
shifting and no use of 4th gear power delivery is instant and the "judder?"
on pedal release is much less if not gone. Does this suggest tranny when all
the mechanical types have said engine electrics?
The biggest symptom is fuel consumption. this car used to do 18mpg (cold wet
weather), 23mpg (warm dry weather) and 30 mpg on a motorway run. Now, with
very careful driving its stuggling to manage 16+ (under any conditions) and
with petrol at four quid a gallon I can't afford that for long.
Can anyone offer any tips?
Regards
Email me your fax number and I will fax you the schematic.

Initially everything was working fine. Then it would not go down from the drivers switch, but went down fine from the passengers side. Now it seems to be getting a bit cantankerous from the passenger side as well. I'm trying to see a wiring diagram for the operation, as well as see what comes off where to remove the switches, and then probably the door panel. I'm assuming the switches are a press in fit, but I'd hate to damage something
trying to remove them and find out I was wrong.
Thanks,

My apologies for this slightly off topic post. I'm getting ready
to move and need to find a new home for my collection of brochures and press
kits. I’m selling my media in bundles priced between $2 and $10 for
all the brochures/cd_roms/vhs/pictures/slides/press kits/etc. in the
bundle.
I currently have a bundle with 5 Jaguar items on eBay, and they're
going for $5.00 for the entire bundle.
Thanks for your input. I think this is a computer related fault. The
Cruise shuts down and the engine goes into limp home mode.

Hi all,
I just joined the group and I must agree with all the earlier posts. -This is a
quiet group-
That said, I have a question about my cruise control.
We just purchased a 98 XK8 Convertible with 37,000 miles from the original
owner. The
car is perfect except for a problem with the cruie control. When I push the
button on the
console and then try to set the speed, the engine goes into the "limp home"
mode, or
whatever it's called. If I shut the ignition off and restart the engine works as
normal. as
soon as I try again, the light goes on. If I try the disconnect for 20 minutes
trick will it
clear up?
Thanks.
Paul

I think the r12 went out shortly after my xj was built in 92.
As for the engines, I'm not too sure about a "Daimler Six". An "XJ6" is
just a six cylinder and can be 4ltr. A Daimler Double Six is the one with
the 6ltr V12.

Steve
Hi the xj40 was a total revamp of the xj6 with new engines, it was a
rust bucket, and the door handles kept breaking, it was a dog with a
great ride!

Xj40 is a XJ6. The XJ40 is the newest version of the
series 3. their is series 1 series 2 and
series 3 problem cars are years 88 and 89 the
handles keep breaking and year 89 has no smog equip at
all, etc... series 3 the xj40 is good. I own one
and if you have to convert it, its really not that
hard or expensive. but you shouldnt. I sell parts
cheeper than anyone on the net so don't worry. In fact
I have a xj40 1990 VDP, which I may sell for $5,000. I
have two and hav to decide which one to sell.

Hi All
I'm considering buying a Daimler XJ40 and have a couple of questions:
Does anyone know in what year the XJ40 started using R134a as the
Air-con refrigerant instead of R12 - I don't wnat to have to convert
it.
I've seen ads refering to the car as the Daimler six with a 4 litre
engine, is this correct, or does the name Six refer to the V12?
Any general buying advice would be welcome!
Cheers
Rich
