AN undercover investigation has revealed shocking cases of animal
cruelty at a slaughterhouse in Hartshorne.
Campaign group Animal Aid says its operation found several instances
of inhumane treatment at Pickstock Ashby Ltd, in Coal Lane.
In The Humane Slaughter Myth, a report by the group’s head of
campaigns, Kate Fowler, the abattoir is alleged to have been
responsible for several ‘disasters’ while using captive bolt stunning.
This technique is used to knock out cows by firing a retractable bolt
into their brains at high pressure before the animals are shackled and
hoisted so the main arteries in their throats or chests can be cut.
Animal Aid’s covert filming found that at Pickstock, six cows, or four
per cent, were not stunned sufficiently the first time round.
