As the sole vegetarian representative of the Tribune's Taste-test
crew, I was skeptical about my inaugural visit to the gluttonous gala.
Would there be anything for me to eat there?
Would the scent of fried meat on a stick follow me everywhere I went
and seep into the (presumably) few vegetarian options available?
Would these temporary restaurant outlets use the same cookware for
their vegetable dishes as -- gasp -- their meat?
Armed with a fistful of tickets and a mission to find at least one
edible vegetarian option, I approached opening day at Taste of Chicago
the way I approach most of my dining-out experiences: with an open
mind and a granola bar in my pocket, just in case.
Two hours later, I proudly exited Taste of Chicago with a sunburn and
a message to spread to the vegetarians of Chicago and beyond: We can
do this. We can maintain our meat-free diets and values, and still
enjoy these massively meat-centric food festivals alongside our
carnivore brethren.
