Subject: statistics for my Mail Art collection
joshronsen
Send Email Send Email

I have been working on archiving my somewhat small Mail Art collection,
which I have been working on since 1997 or so. I have been scanning in
images of the art works and notating who sent them and where they came
from. I have 455 images scanned in. I have not included works which
have been reproduced in small b&w photocopies in catalogs, which would
have yeilded maybe another 100 pieces of art.

The artists with the most number of pieces in my collection are (not
including my own pieces which get sent sent back to me as part of
assembly zines, etc.):

10 Diane Bertrand (QC)
8 Pascal Lenoir (FR)
7 M. Vanci Stirnemann (CH)
6 Antonio Gomez (ES)
6 Cat Schick (US:AZ)
6 Michael Sierra (US:AZ)
6 Miguel Jimenez (ES)
6 Paghat the Ratgirl (US:WA)
6 Patricia Collins (UK)
5 Carmen Resendez (US:OR)
5 Giovanni Stradada Ravenna (IT)
5 Jurgen Kierspel (CH)

The countrues with the most participants are (again, not including my
own works):

USA: 124
CANADA: 24
ITALY: 24
FRANCE: 23
SPAIN: 23
SWITZERLAND: 23
THE NETHERLANDS: 19
GERMANY: 14
THE UK: 13
BELGIUM: 11

American State breakdowns:
ARIZONA: 15
CALIFORNIA: 13
TEXAS: 12 (I must have more than this)
WASHINGTON: 11
NEW YORK: 8

I have always wondered what these stats were for my collection. Now I
know. I have 38 pieces that I do not know the creator or country of
origin. It would be interesting to compare the data from other
collections.

Maybe I will do this again in 10 years and see how the stats change.

If you think you or your country aren't fairly represented, you can
send something for my archive at:

Hi Josh,

Giving my statistics is a bit tricky. I actually tried several times
to do something like that of many parts of the archive. An example
is the TAM Rubberstamp Archive. Must be 3000+ contributors that have
sent in 12.000+ sheets and the collection is still growing. Only one
collection of my mail-art is fully digitized. The envelopes to one
specific other artist. That brings me 1300+ images in 13 years.

So documenting all I get in and all I send out is very complicated
because it is just too much. On my IUOMA_blog I try to do my best to
document a bit and explain my views.

I know it is fascinating to see these statistics. And I am happy to
hear that you documented your collection this way. Will be happy to
see it as well in digital format.

MOVE AGAINST G8
MAIL ART ON THE FENCE

Our project together with ATTAC Germany was a great success. As we had
promised to all participants and always hoped to achieve, we really managed
to put all contributions on the heavily guarded fence, probably the biggest
open-air Mailart show ever, and best-protected by German police, even on
horseback! Thanx to ATTAC who fought it through the German lawcourts!

There was alone 15 international television teams by the fence interviewing
us about your works for social justice, against globalization, not to
mention the newspapers and the newsagencies. And it DID feel strange to be
there in my artpostman´s uniform, one of the only five Germans who were
officially allowed to that monstrous fence, the fence around the world´s 8
most powerful heads of state. Even for a pee out there in nowhereland, I got
accompanied by heavily armed police. Imagine those helicopters and rotating
cameras above . Now I am also notorious with the German Secret Service.

If you want to share our feelings of success and, yes - pride, have a look
at our artzine OSWALD on our URL homepage
http://www.netmailart.de/english/oswald/Oswald_1_2007.pdf. All participants
have got a free printed copy in their letterboxes. Thanks for your ideas +
works!

Queridos Camaradas,

Welcome to the Fine Art Adoption Network (FAAN).
FAAN is an online network, which uses a gift economy
to connect artists and potential collectors. All of
the artworks on view are available for adoption. This
means acquiring an artwork without purchasing it,
through an arrangement between the artist and
collector. Our goal is to help increase and diversify
the population of art owners and to offer artists new
means for engaging their audience.

Globesity Festival Oct 22-28, 2007 New York City
http://www.theglobesityfestival.org/submissions.html
NOW SEEKING SUBMISSIONS

Art becomes action when its intention is vested in the
interest of the people, bringing SOLUTIONS TO LIGHT.
Action becomes Direct Action when we engage in an ACT
of confrontation beyond the confines of the space
society designates for the artist.

This act is a HUNGER STRIKE.
A HUNGER STRIKE for SOLUTIONS.

We are inviting artists to participate in a juice
fast, then conceive a work of performance to be
performed at the festival in October.

For centuries people have fasted, seeking better
health, spiritual understanding, and justice. An
Intense Clarity comes from Fasting. We will provide
all Hunger Strike participants access to health
professionals and our online resource center to
support each fast. We fast in SOLIDARITY for
SOLUTIONS!

The Globesity Festival is a Solutionist's Laboratory.
Through the microscope of fasting we are creating an
experiment that will bring together artists,
activists, intellectuals, the youth and general
public. Social, political and economic wolves have
ravaged, shaken, and scattered so many of our beloved
friends and colleagues leaving generations
dis(sed)-Connected. Our neighborhoods are shifting
out from under us. Eleven years ago Penny Arcade
said, "There is a gentrification that happens to
buildings and neighborhoods and there is a
gentrification that happens to ideas." The
Solutionist's Laboratory is a think-tank of
performance, inter-generational dialogue, and
re-Affirmation of connection among artists, activists,
and the community. Through the Clarity of Fasting WE
seek solutions.

This is a HUNGER STRIKE for a reConnection with the
beautiful regenerative powers we possess in our bodies
and in our mind. A STRIKE for SOLUTIONS. They tell us
shopping is patriotic and dissent is not! Let's stop
consuming for one week. We need to come together to
share and build effective solutions to the
exploitative consumer culture that is quickly
destroying our planet, our cultures, our spirit and
our bodies. Change starts with the personal. Let's
take back our bodies, so we can begin to take back our
communities, our country and our world.

Come join us! Contribute Your Art! The World is
Waiting to See What YOU have to Say.

WHAT: Engage in a Ten Day juice fast and conceive a
work of performance (whatever that means to you - a
play, a dance, a song to the moon – whatever you do).
As the work will be performed as part of a shared
evening we ask that the work be anywhere from 5 to
30ish minutes. Please email a statement of intention,
and a little information about who you are to
submissions@....

Go to Fasting for more info and fasting support. All
questions will be addressed! SOLIDARITY!
All Globesity Artists should consult their physician
before undertaking the ten-day juice fast.

Hi there guys,

I am a student from England currently studying graphic communication. I
am currently composing a dissertation on mail art and am just posting a
few questions. I would appreciate any answers back...

1) What effect do you believe the internet has had on mail art. Do you
believe it has made mail art more visible to outsiders of the network?
if so why?

2) How visible do you believe mail art is to the general public?

Hi Chris,
Interesting thoughts but the cards are not always white as a canvas is. I love it because it allows me to tackle topics I don't usually deal with and some are hard at times. Always fun and lots to do but the communication and documentation and potential friendships is wonderful and not always in the gallery shows I do. You want cards?  What is your address?
Best Wishes,
Judy

The effect on mail-art of Internet: communication can be done
cheaper. Communication as a medium has one more possibility extra.
The amount of snail-amil decresses

Outsiders of the network don't know that much. Who looks for " mail-
art " in Google other than mail-artists. Internet has made the Mail-
Art network visible to necomers though, and they have entered the '
snail-mail' world as well.

Postal rates goe up everywhere, so that is a more important facto to
integrate electronic communication with mail-art.

I wrote many aticles on the theme (also vack in the 90-ies). See
www.iuoma.org

good luck with your work!

a. The internet has been a double edged sword. Without email, the
written letter (as a distant second to a phone call) would still be
the most likely way for people to send thoughts vis a vis, the
written word. There is a creative act in sending the simplest message
by mail. If art can be partly defined as "the process of selection",
then even the untrained citizen would "select" stationery, the type
of stamp, the choice of ink pen and it's color and in some way even
minimal creative decisions were and still are being made. The act of
putting words to paper, more choices, more perhaps not so benign
activity in the process of selection.

b. Without a doubt, the internet has heightened the visibility of
mail to the general public. Whatever the humble beginnings of a site
such as "PostSecret" may have been in genesis, I do not get the
impression the "secrets" patterned in the tradition of mail art are
being made mostly by people who have training in art. Which, is a
good thing. For a few minutes, the bearer of the secret is elevated
to mail artist. For an even longer period of time, the work is
displayed in a way that considered "public" and some of them are
published in books. They're getting more than their "15 minutes".

c. Why? I don't know. Even those trained in art risk brutal rebuttals
by publicizing their work. They also risk accolades, they risk
becoming successful, they risk getting recognition and the bell curve.

>
> 2) How visible do you believe mail art is to the general public?

In the strictest definition of mail art, it may be be only
coincidentally visible. In concept, it is all around them. Every
piece of junk mail--potentially a master piece. Art is is everywhere,
it's just a matter of putting a frame around it -- or a postage stamp.

I Remain Your Humble, etc.
