Chemistry, physics, botany, medicine, archeology, tanatology,
photography, coin collecting, Biblical exegesis, the science of
textiles, the history of art, microscopic observation, space science
and modern computers continue stubbornly to try to answer the
fascinating question: who is the man of the Shroud? An incredible
series of coincidences between the Shroud Image and the Evangelical
Figure of the Man of Sorrows, crucified in Jerusalem when Pontius
Pilate was public prosecutor makes it certain that the Sheet kept in
Turin is that which wrapped the Body of Christ.
In fact nowadays when we are so preoccupied with images, highly
sophisticated scientific research and electronic computers, so far
from the Faith of simple people, have penetrated the Mystery of the
Shroud Imprint to the point of making us say: the Shroud is not a
work of man nor of physical causes known to man. We owe them our
gratitude for this Message to an inattentive and disappointed mankind
that only in Christ can the Eternal live and not the transient.

CLIFTON, N.J. --
When The Saturday Afternoon Poets meet on April 6, local author
Anthony
Buccino will join them to read from his book Rambling Round - Inside
and
Outside At The Same Time, (Trade Paperback, 217 p, ISBN 1-4010-2912-

available at www.xlibris.com.
The Nutley writer will join group founders Salvatore Buttaci and Paul
Juszcyk
at the Clifton Library on Saturday, April 6 at 2 p.m. Lodi resident
Buttaci
and Belleville resident Juszcyk will read from their published and
unpublished poetry. Buccino will discuss Rambling Round and read a
short
passage.
Buttaci and Juszcyk founded The Saturday Afternoon Poets in 1995
under the
auspices of New Jersey Poetry Society, Inc., of which both are
members. "A
poem is only half alive until it is read by or to others," said
Buttaci.
"That is why Paul and I saw a need for a poetry-reading group whose
members
would read their work in libraries, schools, coffeehouses, on cable
TV, radio
-in whatever venues were available to us." Open readings at the end
of
featured readings encourage attendees to come and read their own
poems.
"Some who have read in our open readings," said Jurszyk, "became
featured
readers with us." The Saturday Afternoon Poets has also done much to
encourage young people to write poems and present them at their
readings.
"This is what we must do to keep poetry alive and well in America.
There must
be young poets who will lift up the poetic pens when today's poets
lay them
down," Buttaci said. "It's in the interest of poetry that we all look
to
insuring a continued place for poetry and poets in tomorrow's world."
Buttaci was editor of New Worlds Unlimited, an annual poetry
anthology that
showcased poems of aspiring and professional poets. Recently he was
editor of
Poetidings, the newsletter of the NJ Poetry Society. His recent books
include
Promising the Moon, a collection of poetry, and a book on Sicilian
themes A
Family of Sicilians: Stories and Poems.
Belleville resident Juszcyk has been writing poetry for about 30
years. His
latest poetry collections include A View From the Porch and For All
Intense

The results show a steady, if shrinking population at about 56.8

The number of families is increasing (from around 19 to 21 million

And since society has a need to always alienate some of its group by a
"tyranny of the majority" there is always going to be a need to reinforce
not only the individuality that is overlooked within those groups, but also
the need to suppress the social conformity in which hypocrisy operates.

Dear Editor
For too long Italian Americans have been portrayed by the media as
the lowest of the low, as bums, buffoons, bigots and bimbos and in
very few positive roles or programs. Now that we are finally seeing
Italian Americans coming together and speaking out with one united
voice. We are faced with individuals that feel we have gone too far.
Those proud Italian Americans that speak out are labeled whiners and
radicals by Italian Americans that neither understand the severity or
they just plan don't care. Those of us that have been asking that
Italian Americans be treated fairly by the media are starting to see
changes directly or indirectly due to the fruits of our labor. This
is evident in televisions shows such as "That's Life," "Family Law,"
and "First Monday." Offensive commercials and programs such as AT&T
Broadband, Katharine Gibbs College, American Way, American Airlines'
in-fight magazine, T.G.I.Friday "Moofia" game were some of negative
programs that were pulled.
And now we're told to stop, "Enough is enough?" Stress the positive!
We must always stress the positive, but stressing only the positive
has not worked we must do both! We cannot remain silent, for to do
so is to condone. To think that negative stereotypical programming,
commercials, and shows will fade away is ludicrous and at the very
least naive. The "out of sight and out of mind" approach by some
Italian Americans as the perfect panacea has not and will not
work.
All I can say to my Italian American brothers and sisters is how we
are perceived by others is in our hands. We must, like the song
says, "You've got to accent the positive and eliminate the
negative." And above all remember "The intolerable behavior towards
Italian American is tolerated by Americans because it is tolerated by
Italian Americans.

Ciao Capoduce,
not at all.
I have not any idea of the circumstances of what brought to the
killing of the Italian journalist, whether a fatality or a deliberate
or wanton killing by Israeli forces.
However, PLEASE BEAR IN MIND (this is valid for all), that the
protest and the rally which was meant here (held in Rome) was NOT a
protest of the Italian people, but of a portion of it ( a minority).
The rally was led primarily by the so-called No Global, Communist
Refoundation, the Greens and so forth. There were also (very few)
Jewish (alledged or real do not know). The rally did not include any
party of the Center-Right coalition (currently the Parliamentary
Majority), as well a large portion of the Centre-Left coalition as
well (currently the Parliamentary Minority). Also the former
Communist Party (P.C.I.)currently D.S was partially represented by
some of the most left-prone members: Salvi, Folena e.g., but others
were not there. The reason is simple: this Rally was NOT for peace in
Palestine, but simply a rally AGAINST Israel, backing up (as a matter
of fact of course and not directly) the terrorist wings which are
scouring Palestine today. To highlight one nice touch: some of the
Rally protesters were distributing leaflets comparing Israel to the
Nazis, and equating the Star of David to the Swastika.
So, definitely the killing of the Italian journalist has nothing to
do with this rally which - again - is not the expression of the
majority of Italian people nor of official Government representative.
Italians understand that the question is very complex and how both
parties have their rights to have granted as well as duties to
observe, and these may not be dismissed with a rally which depicted
Israel as the absolute evil.
Hope this clarifies what happened and how to focus correctly the story
kregards

The ANNOTICO Report
Some of you are aware that Valentine's Day was named after an
Italian Saint.
Others are even aware that St. Nicholas revered bones are interred
in Bari,
Italy.
But how many of you knew that Saint Patrick, aka Patricius Magonus
Sucatus,
aka Maewyn Succat, was the son of parents of Roman citizenship, who
were
living
in Great Britain at the time, making him a Roman citizen!!!
Although Patricius supposed wrote an extensive autobiographical book
called
"Confessio", historians cannot agree whether he was born in 385 AD
or 387 AD,
and in Wales or Scotland.
Most people don't realize that St. Patrick was absolutely NOT Irish,
but
either Welch
(careful not to say English) or Scottish, BUT of Roman/Italian
ancestry!!!
So when you think of wearing "green" in celebration of St. Pat's
Day, it
would be appropriate to wear a "tricolore" Shamrock. [;-)
And if you planned on making any bets on St. Pat's heritage, at your
favorite
Irish Pub, come this weekend, I'd be sure to print this out, and be
ready to
use the references below as your proof. :)

The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001.
Patrick, Saint
c.385-461, Christian missionary, the Apostle of Ireland, b. Bannavem
Taberniae (an unknown place in Britain, possibly near the Severn or
in
Pembroke). He was one of the most successful missionaries in
history.
Early Life and His Calling
The facts of Patrick's life are largely obscured by legend. He
belonged to a
Christian family of Roman citizenship. Captured when barely 16 by
Irish
marauders and enslaved, he worked for six years as a herder on the
slopes of
Slemish (near Ballymena, Co. Antrim) or of Croaghpatrick or (most
likely) of
both. Then, in response to a voice, he escaped and embarked for
Gaul.

New Advent-Catholic Encyclopedia
St. Patrick-------Apostle of Ireland, born at Kilpatrick, near
Dumbarton, in
Scotland,
in the year 387; died at Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland, 17 March, 493.
He had for his parents Calphurnius and Conchessa. The former
belonged to a
Roman family of high rank and held the office of decurio in Gaul or
Britain.
Conchessa was a near relative of the great patron of Gaul, St.
Martin of
Tours.
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11554a.htm
--------------------------------------------
Patrick was not Irish to begin with. He was born in Scotland at a
time when
Ireland was a land of pagan kings and warriors. His parents were
Romans,
probably there as merchants or administrators of a Roman Colony.
http://www.domestic-church.com/CONTENT.DCC/19980301/SAINTS/STPAT.HTM
--------------------------------------------
It is unclear exactly where Patricius Magonus Sucatus (Patrick) was
born--somewhere in the west between the mouth of the Severn and the
Clyde--but this most popular Irish saint was probably born in
Scotland of
British origin, perhaps in a village called Bannavem Taberniae.
(Other
possibilities are in Gaul or at Kilpatrick near Dunbarton,
Scotland.) His
father, Calpurnius, was a deacon and a civil official, and his
grandfather
was a priest.
http://users.erols.com/saintpat/ss/0317patr.htm
-------------------------------------------
True history and legend are intertwined when it comes to St.
Patrick. It is
known that he was born in Scotland and was kidnapped and sold in
Ireland as a
slave. He became fluent in the Irish language before making his
escape to the
continent. Eventually he was ordained as a deacon, then priest and
finally as
a bishop. Pope Celestine then sent him back to Ireland to preach the
gospel.
Evidently he was a great traveller, especially in Celtic countries,
as
innumerable places in Brittany, Cornwall, Wales, Scotland and
Ireland are
named after him. Here it is where actual history and legend become
difficult
to separate.
http://www.irelandnow.com/heritage/myths/patrick.html
-------------------------------------------
Saint Patrick was born in 387 A.D. in Britain as Maewyn Succat. His
father
Calphurnius was a Roman official. Saint Patrick was kidnapped at age
16 and
sold into slavery in Ireland, according to his autobiography .He
escaped by
boat to Britain after six years of captivity and traveled to St.
Martin's
monastery in Tours, France, where he studied under Saint Germain of
Auxerre
and became a priest. In 431 A.D. Pope Celestine I named him
Patricius and
sent him on a mission to Ireland.

--------------------------------------------
So who was the real St Patrick? We can confidently say that he was a
real
person. He tells us so himself, having left us a record, his
Confessio, a
justification of his life, written in Latin when he was an old man.
This
authentic record is a fascinating insight into Patrick, the man;
written in
his own words, we hear all about his fears and concerns, but little
concrete
about the places he went to, churches he established and people he
met.
He was from Bannavem Taberniae, part of Roman Britain. Scholars have
placed
this settlement in a number of places: Carlisle, Devon and Wales are
amongst
the claimants. He was kidnapped from his Christian family by an
Irish raiding
party and taken to Ireland at the age of 16. As a captive in Ireland
he
herded animals, either sheep or pigs - his Latin is ambiguous on
this point -
http://www.saintpatrickcentre.com/index2.html
--------------------------------------------
The "Confessio" of Saint Patrick
This autobiographical confession was written by Patrick himself, in
Latin,
around the year 450. It offers a unique record of life in the
British Isles
during those times. Born in England or Scotland, kidnapped and sold
into
slavery in Ireland as a teen, escaping probably to northern France,
and
returning to Ireland as a missionary after a prophetic dream... it's
quite
amazing that this record has survived!
"I, Patrick, a sinner, a most simple countryman, the least of all
the
faithful and most contemptible to many, had for father the deacon
Calpurnius,
son of the late Potitus, a priest, of the settlement [vicus] of
Bannavem
Taburniae; he had a small villa nearby where I was taken captive. I
was at
that time about sixteen years of age. I did not, indeed, know the
true God;
and I was taken into captivity in Ireland with many thousands of
people.."
http://www.robotwisdom.com/jaj/patrick.htmlhttp://www.ccel.org/p/patrick/confession/confession.html
-------------------------------------------
The person who was to become St. Patrick, the patron saint of
Ireland, was
born in Wales about AD 385. His given name was Maewyn, and he almost
didn't
get the job of bishop of Ireland because he lacked the required
scholarship.
Far from being a saint, until he was 16, he considered himself a
pagan. At
that age, he was sold into slavery by a group of Irish marauders
that raided
his village.

The IDEs of March - March 15th
The soothsayer's warning to Julius Caesar, "Beware the Ides of
March," has forever imbued that date with a sense of foreboding. But
in Roman times the expression "Ides of March" did not necessarily
evoke a dark mood—it was simply the standard way of saying "March
15." Surely such a fanciful expression must signify something more
than merely another day of the year? Not so. Even in Shakespeare's
time, sixteen centuries later, audiences attending his play Julius
Caesar wouldn't have blinked twice upon hearing the date called the
Ides.
The term Ides comes from the earliest Roman calendar, which is said
to have been devised by Romulus, the mythical founder of Rome.
Whether it was Romulus or not, the inventor of this calendar had a
penchant for complexity. The Roman calendar organized its months
around three days, each of which served as a reference point for
counting the other days:
Kalends (1st day of the month)
Nones (the 7th day in March, May, July, and October; the 5th in the
other months)
Ides (the 15th day in March, May, July, and October; the 13th in the
other months)
The remaining, unnamed days of the month were identified by counting
backwards from the Kalends, Nones, or the Ides. For example, March 3
would be V Nones—5 days before the Nones (the Roman method of
counting days was inclusive; in other words, the Nones would be
counted as one of the 5 days).

Not only is Israel intent on genocide, but now an Italian journalist
was also killed, shot multiple times by the Israeli army. Was that
possibly a message to Italy for their protest? Wouldn't surprise me.

(1) TENS OF THOUSANDS CALL FOR PALESTINIAN STATE
ROME (AFP) March 10, 2002— Tens of thousands of people marched in
Rome on
Saturday to call for the creation of a Palestinian state and express
solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The protest — organised by the Democratic Left, the Green party, two
Communist parties and anti-globalisation groups — brought traffic in
central
Rome to a standstill, as demonstrators marched in intermittent rain.
Organisers said some 50,000 people participated in the three-
kilometre march
along the Italian capital's main thoroughfares.
The demonstration ended at the Piazza Navona, where speakers called
for peace
in the Middle East and an end to the bloodshed, a day after the
deadliest day
in the 17-month conflict, which left more than 50 Palestinians dead.
Many protesters — among them women wearing Islamic headscarves —
said they
believed Israelis and Palestinians could live together in peace.
Demonstrators said they supported both the security of the state of
Israel,
and the creation of a Palestinian state.
Police were out in force to maintain order — ahead of a Lazio-AS
Roma
football match set for Sunday — but no incidents were reported.

(2) PALESTINIAN LEADER CONFIRMS ITALY'S IMPORTANCE IN PEACE PROCESS
According to Yasser Arafat, Italy could, because of its historical,
religious
and geopolitical ties with the Middle East, and because of its good
relationship with the United States and its position in Europe,
become a
catalyst in the troubled area's peace process. The Palestinian
leader made
this declaration yesterday, on the eve of a summit meeting in
Brussels
between the European Union's foreign ministers, where a Saudi
Arabian Middle
East peace proposal will be on the agenda.

has been to foster a positive image and to eliminate negative
stereotyping of Hispanics on stage, films and television.
We congratulate this years awardees for helping to break Hispanic
stereotyping: Actress Priscilla Lopez, Choreographer Graciela
Daniele, TV personality Geraldo Rivera, actors Jamie Sanchez and
Benjamin Bratt.
Both the ABC of UNICO and the One Voice Coalition stated, "We

Our Unity is paying off - thanks to you all
Unity Involvement
As you know one of the One Voice Coalition's goals is to make our
activists and the Italian American organizations (USA & Canada)
aware of the negative portrayal of Italian Americans in commercials,
games, programs, movie and TV series, etc.,
Together we have taken action against some of these offenders. There
were some that we would have had a difficult time mounting any type
of campaign against, but we made our objections to negative
portrayals heard. Like they say we win some, we lose some. But there
is something I have come to realize since the One Voice Coalition
discovered the power of the Internet; that is every E-mail, letter,
phone call and fax has made the targeted offender aware of our
presence and our concerns. In a matter of days, minutes, sometimes
seconds, organizations are not only notified but action is taken.
There was a time when I was told that I was the only one
complaining. Now I'm told if I would please call off the activists,
and in some cases the offenders have changed their E-mail address to
avoid being told how offensive their products are to upstanding
Italian Americans.
We are also seeing some positive TV series portraying Italian
Americans in a positive light. These changes may have been a direct
result of our making our voices heard. Producers are aware that
there are more than 20 million Italian Americans in this country and
we should be taken seriously. We have thanked them for positive
portrayals in TV shows such as 'First Monday,' and "That's Life."
This has come about because of a few dedicated activists and
organizations. I say a few because we're just getting started. At
this point in time we have the following listed.
Anti Bias Committee of UNICO National ............. 83
Italian American One Voice Coalition ........ ....... 258
Italian American Organizations ........................... 27
Italian American YAHOO Clubs ..................... 1414
Non affiliated ................................................... 50
La Dolce Vita ....................................................66
Now that's not counting all the e-mails that each individual and
organization sent out. I can't help thinking what effect we would
have if we all would send our comments, complaints, concerns out at
the same time. Believe me, networks, producers, editors, sponsors,
etc., will not only take notice but, changes will come about.
Case in point, March 3, 2002 Parade Magazine answer to the following
question,
"How do Italian Americans feel about the way they are depicted on
The Sopranos?"
A: ... But most are so secure about their place in American society
that they're among the millions of fans eagerly awaiting The
Sopranos' fourth season. ...
The statement made in Walter Scott's Personality Parade in Parade
The Sunday Newspaper Magazine, proves that we must increase our
numbers. We cannot afford to be silent. For to remain silent is to
condone.
Our Italian American One Voice Coalition needs to increase its
activists list and as we have suggested each organizations must, as
was done by the Anti Bias Committee of UNICO National, establish
their own list.
I have said time and time again we must unify and speak out with one
voice. The Italian American Coalition has shown that we, individuals
and organizations, can successfully work together as one, sharing
ideas and information while keeping our identity.
"Changes can come from the power of many, but only when the many
come together to form that which is invincible ... the power of
one"
Through the Italian American One Voice Coalition we will make our
voices heard. The Italian American community must unite on a
national level in order to deal with these un-American injustices.

The awards will be presented at the Italian American Museum's Gala
and Awards Ceremony, to be held on Thursday, March 21, 2002, at The
Plaza. The Italian American Museum Gala and Awards Ceremony is
being sponsored by the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute
of Queens College/The City University of New York.
The honorees are:
Lawrence E. Auriana, President of the Columbus Citizens Foundation,

"Our four award recipients represent the diverse arenas in which
Italian Americans have excelled and contributed so abundantly to the
financial, political, and cultural fabric of our country," said
Joseph V. Scelsa, EdD, President and CEO of the Italian American
Museum. "The Italian American Museum strives to recognize the
struggles and celebrate the contributions of our immigrant ancestors
and their heirs."
This year's award recipients will receive a relief of "La Bellissima
America" sculpture, which captures the fears and joys of an
immigrant Italian family landing on the shores of the United States,
by artist Patrick Morelli.
"The City University of New York has also been very gracious in
temporarily housing our new Museum while we look for a permanent
home," said Dr. Scelsa. "The Gala and Awards Ceremony will bring us
one step closer to realizing our dream of an Italian American
Museum."
The Italian American Museum is an outgrowth of the highly acclaimed
exhibit, "The Italians of New York: Five Centuries of Struggle and
Achievement," which was held recently at the New York Historical
Society.
"Through exhibits, lectures, and festivals, the Italian American
Museum will explore the rich heritage of Italy and Italian America,"
said Dr. Scelsa. The Italian American Museum will collect, preserve,
and display notable works of Italians and Italian American to the

As we recognize the 57th anniversary of Gunnery Sergeant John
Basilone's
supreme sacrifice on February 19th, I want to inform you of my recent
efforts
to secure a postage stamp for this true American hero. With the
invaluable
assistance of Dr. Emanuele Alfano and Mr. Peter Ippolito the campaign
to
properly honor Gunnery Sergeant Basilone continues to grow.
As many of you know, on January 3, 2001, I introduced House
Concurrent
Resolution 4 which expresses the sense of Congress that a
commemorative
postage stamp should be issued to honor Gunnery Sergeant Basilone.
The bill
currently has 30 cosponsors and I am continuing to strenuously lobby
my
colleagues to join our cause.
I have included an article from the March 3, 2002 edition of the
Washington Times highlighting our fight to properly honor Gunnery
Sergeant
Basilone. This article shows that we have expanded our campaign to
the
national stage and we will not relent until we realize victory, just
as
Sergeant Basilone endured at Guadalcanal. My office continues to
receive
numerous petitions from across the nation and I continue to forward
them to
the United States Postal Service (USPS). To date I am pleased to
report the
USPS has received over 150,000 petitions.
On October 24th, the anniversary of Gunnery Sergeant Basilone's
courageous defense of Henderson Field, we will hold a national press
conference where we hope to present the USPS our petition with 1
million
signatures. The fact that so many Americans are still inspired by
the heroic
acts of John Basilone speaks to the legacy of honor and patriotism he
left to
his country.
As always, if you any questions regarding our efforts, please
feel free
to contact me or Ben Rich of my staff.
Sincerely,
Bill Pascrell,Jr.
