Hadith of the Day

The Two Festivals (Eids)

Narrated Anas:
The Prophet said, "Whoever slaughtered (his sacrifice) before the 'Id prayer,
should slaughter again." A man stood up and said, "This is the day on which one
has desire for meat," and he mentioned something about his neighbors. It seemed
that the Prophet I believed him. Then the same man added, "I have a young
she-goat which is dearer to me than the meat of two sheep." The Prophet
permitted him to slaughter it as a sacrifice. I do not know whether that
permission was valid only for him or for others as well.

Same Song, Different Verse
by Philip Giraldi, November
12, 2009

http://original.antiwar.com/giraldi/2009/11/11/same-song-different-verse/

The American people, barely coping with nearly 20% in actual as opposed to
statistical unemployment, a broken health care system, a skyrocketing federal
deficit, and a collapse in home values really dont need another war, but
another war is what they are going to get. Blame the usual players in Congress
and the mainstream media for a lot of it, but the case being made that Iran is a
threat to the remainder of the world is largely being cranked up by Israel and
its yapping poodles loosely described as the Israel lobby. That Iran spends
only 1% as much on its military as does the United States appears to be
irrelevant to the argument because everyone who reads the Washington Post
and New York Times knows that those wily mullahs have nukes hidden up the
sleeves of those loose gowns that they wear, secret warhead programs, and
ballistic missiles that will be able to strike Europe someday for reasons that
continue to be somewhat elusive.
Israel, which gets nearly $3 billion in "military assistance" and numerous
other perks from Washington annually and spends twice as much as Tehran on its
own military gets a free pass even though it has a secret and uninspected
nuclear arsenal that undoubtedly contributes to Iranian paranoia. Israels
Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu has made very clear that he wants the United
States to attack Iran. What Israel wants from Washington it usually gets and
there is no sign that President Barack Obama has the guts needed to change that
sorry history.

Over the past several weeks Israel and its many friends have been
particularly busy in beating the war drum. Israels Deputy Foreign Minister
Danny Ayalon declared emphatically on November 6th that Israels frequently
stated willingness to attack Iran is not just a bluff. On the previous day, US
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton again cautioned Iran, pressuring the country
to accept a tentative agreement on its nuclear program that would have denied it
the right to enrich its own uranium, warning "We will not alter it and we will
not wait forever." Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen also
joined the chorus. On November 8th the Israeli newspaper Haaretz
reported that Mullen "said last week in Washington that a nuclear Iran would
pose an existential threat to Israel. Mullen said he would prefer that the US
work diplomatically to keep the country from acquiring nuclear weapons, but
hinted that should such efforts fail, the US air force and navy could be put
into action as well."
Meanwhile on Capitol Hill, at the November 3rd Jerusalem Conference, a gaggle
of congressmen convened to pledge everlasting loyalty to a foreign nation.
Democratic Representative Howard Berman and Republican Representative Ileana
Ros-Lehtinen, co-sponsors of the Iran Refined Petroleum Sanctions Act of 2009
which advocates cutting off gasoline imports, spoke emotionally about the
"Iranian threat." Berman, who reportedly once took an oath of office to
represent all of the American people, confirmed "I was a Zionist before I was a
Democrat" and added "This administration is serious about preventing a nuclear
Iran." Also present was the ever reliable Senator James Inhofe, who said "There
are people who want to take Israel off the map, and the US is next." He clearly
meant Iran though he did not state who those "people" might be or exactly how
they were going to do it.
And then there are the good old Southern Baptists, always quick to defend
religious freedom worldwide unless it happens to involve Israeli repression of
Christians and Muslims in the Holy Land. On November 2nd leading Southern
Baptist evangelical Richard Land of the what-must-be ironically named Ethics and
Religious Liberty Commission joined Jewish and other evangelical Christian
leaders in New York to demand immediate sanctions to stop Iran from developing
nuclear weapons. The evangelical and Jewish groups support the Berman proposal
to sanction firms or governments that export refined petroleum to Iran to
"engender (sic) significant steps toward ending the Iran regimes murderous
pursuit of nuclear weapons." Richard had apparently not heard about the 2007
National Intelligence Estimate that stated that Iran had abandoned its weapon
program in 2003. Nor had he read, or had no interest in reading, the June 2009
report by the US State Departments Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor
which noted that Israel discriminates systematically against Christians. It
protects holy sites under a 1967 law, but only if they are Jewish. The report
noted that Christian and Muslim sites are fair game for exploitation by real
estate entrepreneurs.
As the Goldstone report on Israeli war crimes in Gaza is about to be debated
in the UN General Assembly, Tel Aviv presumably feels a need for some good PR,
but some of the recent propaganda coming out of Israel and uncritically replayed
in the US media does not pass the smell test. On November 4th, Israel seized an
Antiguan registered freighter named the Francop, alleged to be carrying
weapons in international waters. Bibi Netanyahu was beside himself, calling the
weapons a "war crime" and declaring "Whoever still needed indisputable proof
that Iran continues to send weapons to terror organizations got it today in a
clear and unequivocal manner. Iran sends these weapons to terror organizations
in order to hit Israeli cities and kill civilians. The time has come for the
international community to put real pressure on Iran for it to halt this
despicable activity and back Israel when it defends itself against terrorists
and their patrons."
One has to be amused when Bibi Netanyahu calls a possible ship load of
weapons that had not been delivered anywhere as a "war crime" while at the same
time refusing to investigate last Januarys carnage in Gaza. Some have also
noted that the daring Israeli commando action looked like it might have been
staged. In its first press announcement, Israel claimed that the weapons had
been picked up when the ship stopped in Syria. But the ship had not yet been to
Syria and why would Damascus send Iranian weapons by ship when it would have
been far easier to do by land? Later Israel claimed the ship was traveling from
Iran to Syria, but the shipowners stated that the vessels actual itinerary was
Egypt to Cyprus to Lebanon, ending in Turkey. So where did the weapons that
were displayed by Israel after its commandoes seized the ship and towed it into
the port of Ashdod come from and who was supposed to receive them? It is, to
say the least, not clear and the Israeli story has a number of holes in it, most
particularly its confident assertion that the weapons were bound for Hezbollah.
Immediately after the seizure, the Israelis released the captain and crew,
saying that they had had no knowledge of the hundreds of tons of weapons that
were alleged to be on board. To keep the story fresh, six days later Israels
Army Chief Gabi Ashkenazi resurrected the tale, stating, without providing any
evidence, that Hezbollah has tens of thousands of rockets capable of hitting
most Israeli cities.
A strange story, but no stranger than the spin about the Iranian nuclear
facility located near Qom. Readers will recall that the facility was initially
described by the US media as a secret weapons facility, proving that the evil
Iranians were producing weapons of mass destruction that would immediately be
handed off to terrorists who would then use them to blow up the Statue of
Liberty. Even though US intelligence had know about the site for several years
and had not been particularly alarmed by it, the Obama Administration quickly
jumped on the story, denouncing the Iranians and accepting the premise that the
hidden facility automatically means a secret weapons program.
On November 3rd Israeli Military Intelligence Chief Major General Amos Yadlin
claimed that the Qom site has "no possible civilian use," adding that Iran is
"horizontally expanding" its nuclear program so it will be able to develop a
weapon in the shortest possible time. But it now turns out that the Qom
facility was started by the Iranian government in early 2007 when the Bush
Administration had combined three aircraft carrier groups in the Persian Gulf
region and was threatening to go to war over alleged Iranian interference in
neighboring Iraq, a claim that was largely contrived. In any event, the
facility was not developed with any urgency by the Iranians and currently, more
than two and a half years later, it is little more than a potential back-up site
for uranium enrichment clearly constructed over concerns that Israel or the US
would attack the main facility at Natanz. The site was recently inspected by
the UNs IAEA and Mohammed El-Baradei described it as a "hole in a mountain" and
"nothing to be worried about."
And lets not forget about Hamas, also ranked high in the evil incarnate
stakes behind Hezbollah and Iran. On November 3rd the ubiquitous General Yadlin
also accused Hamas of test firing a missile capable of hitting Tel Aviv, hinting
darkly that the weapon might have come from Iran. In reality, the Gaza Strip,
25 miles long and an average of six miles wide and frequently described as "one
big prison," is hemmed in by overwhelming Israeli firepower on three sides and
cut off by the Egyptians to the south making the import of new military hardware
a bit problematic. As a military threat, Gaza is the mouse that roared.
And so the propaganda campaign, referred to during the cold war as agitprop,
continues with Iran in the crosshairs. There are reports that Israel has funded
a group of young bloggers who have good English to go onto websites to
disseminate the party line, particularly regarding Iran, so it is safe to assume
that an Orwellian conflict that has no rhyme or reason will be promoted all over
the internet. There will be no rest in Congress, within the media, and in the
corridors of power in Israel until Iran is defanged. And if it will take the
deaths of a few thousand more young Americans and the total destruction of the
US economy to accomplish that objective, so be it. Congress and the White House
have not been answerable to the American people for quite some time so why
should another war change anything?

[13.14] To Him is due the true prayer; and those whom they pray to besides Allah
give them no answer, but (they are) like one who stretches forth his two hands

Virtues of the Ten Days of Dhul Hijjah

Reviving aspects of the Sunnah that have been virtually forgotten is a deed that
will bring an immense reward, as is indicated by the words of the Prophet (peace
and blessings of Allaah be upon him): "Whoever revives an aspect of my Sunnah
that is forgotten after my death, he will have a reward equivalent to that of
the people who follow him, without it detracting in the least from their
reward."

German rail operator Deutsche Bahn says it is
close to completing a contract worth 17 billion euros with Qatar to help build a
passenger and freight rail network in the wealthy Gulf emirate.

German Transport Minister Peter Ramsauer said he and Deutsche Bahn chief
executive Ruediger Grube will sign the deal in Qatar on Sunday.
The online version of the business newspaper Handelsblatt says the contract
package is worth 17 billion euros, comprising planning, building of rail
infrastructure and providing rail vehicles, with German firms likely to
win stakes in the project.
The Qatar project, it added, would include a high-speed freight and passenger
link to neighboring Bahrain. It also speculated that Deutsche Bahn's logistics
subsidiary, DB Schenker, could later expand rail links into Saudi Arabia.
State-held Deutsche Bahn did not immediately comment.
Joint venture
The potential deal follows years of negotiations begun under former German
Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.
Handelsblatt, quoting government sources in Berlin, said a joint
venture called the Qatar Railways Development Company would be created, with
Qatar holding 51 percent and Deutsche Bahn 49 percent.

residents of Qatar's main city of Doha and a high-speed link with its
international airport.
Planning would cost 700 million euros, with Deutsche Bahn aiming for a share
of that and later a share of Qatar's rail operations.
Handelsblatt also says the building of Qatar's rail infrastructure
will cost 14 billion euros, with German building firms in the bidding. Rolling
stock worth another two billion euros could be provided by firms such as the
electrical engineering giant Siemens.
Train contract in Sweden
Deutsche Bahn announced on Friday that its commuter train subsidiary DB Regio
has won the tender to provide regional links in southern Sweden.
That contract for links in and around the cities of Norrkoeping, Linkoeping
and their 415,000 residents is due to begin late next year and run for ten
years.

Colony In The Capital, 25 Years On, Living Without Roads & Water

By akansha, Section Civic Problems in Delhi

If you are a stranger and airdropped in this locality, I am sure you won't even
imagine that you are in the National Capital of India.

You will be more surprised when told that you are a few kilometers from the
Parliament House and Rashtrapati Bhawan and at equal distance from the Delhi
State Assembly House. You are in Kacchi Khajuri, a Muslim-dominated colony in
North-East Delhi. The government is spending over Rs 800 crore on infrastructure
for Commonwealth Games 2010, just a few kilometres from here, but this locality
has been waiting for road and drinking water for over a quarter century.

Kacchi Khajuri is a predominantly Muslim locality in New Delhi, but like many
other Muslim-dominated areas in the country, this too is highly neglected in
terms of civic amenities, drinking water, roads, schools and hospitals.

People started living here in 1983. Most of them came, and are still coming,
from Western Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. They are mostly from labor classes or do
small businesses. 25 years on, and they are living without pucca roads and
drinking water facility - electricity reached here very recently. With no roads,
there is no drainage system, making the area a big drain or pond of garbage in
rainy season. Interestingly, the Kacchi Khajuri area, now populated by about
80,000 people (80-90% Muslims), is surrounded by deep long drain from one side
and a pond from other side, yet there is no proper drainage system connecting
the lanes and bylanes of the locality to the drain or pond.

"Labor class people are living here. Very few have their own businesses.
Illiteracy is rampant. Government has shown little interest in this locality.
Since the colony came into existence, there has been no drinking water facility.
There is no pucca road either. With no drainage system, lanes and bylanes are
littered with filth and garbage, causing various diseases among the residents,"
says Muhammad Abdullah, Imam, Jama Masjid Tayyeba - the oldest mosque of the
colony.

To keep an area clean is certainly the responsibility of a civic body but how
the residents as Muslims can shy away from their responsibility to keep their
homes and the bylanes clean by sparing an area for garbage rather than letting a
heap of garbage piling just in front of their home.

The government here has just two things that it can claim to be its own: a
primary school for an area of 80,000 population, denoting how sincere the State
is about education of the largest minority of the country; and a police station,
clearly exposing the mindset of the government about the Muslim community they
need no road, no drinking water, no ration shop and no hospital but they surely
need a police station.

Yes, besides road and water, Kacchi Khajuri has also no government ration shop
and no state-run dispensary or hospital. This is no Bengali-speaking Muslim
dominated area over which hovers a cloud of suspicion about their being Indian
citizens, and thus door of development is shunted on such areas. They are
Hindi-speaking people from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, genuinely Indian citizens
beyond any shred of doubt. They have extended families in their native states.
They have election IDs here and cast votes in elections to choose their
representatives, religiously. And yet, they are living as second-class citizens.
Economic conditions

Muhammad Abdullah, Imam, Jama Masjid Tayyeba, has been leading prayers in this
mosque since 1992. He is paid about Rs 2000 per month by the locals. The mosque,
where Friday prayers are also held, is as old as the colony. The mosque isn't
yet complete as it is half covered by roof and the floor out of the roofed area
is not even plastered. The Imam is from Gorakhpur in UP.

Meet this boy from Darbhanga in Bihar. He has been living here with his family
for over one year. He sells cold water for Re-1 per glass, and thus supports his
family.

Muhammad Waris is from Bijnore in UP. He shifted here three years ago. He has
six children. He works at a small printing shop.

This is the normal pattern of the socio-economic condition of this locality -
either they are laborers or do small businesses.

Educational condition

Though poor, Waris wishes to give good education to his children but fears he
can't. The area with about one lakh population has just one primary school run
by Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and no other government school. So, people
are forced to send their children to private schools if they can afford, or just
drop the idea to educate their children.

"I have four daughters. I want to educate them and make them big people like
Indira Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Mayawati, but I lack resources. If I could have
money I would educate them at good schools, otherwise will drop the idea
altogether to educate them," says Waris.

This is Abdur Rahman from Bijnore. His family is here for over 10 years. The
17-year-old boy Abdur Rahman learns Arabic and Persian at Jama Masjid Tayyeba
where a temporary madrasa is run by the masjid committee. He has completed 10th
from open schooling system.

There are about 23 mosques in the colony but no formal madrasa or community run
school. Yes, some maktabs are being run in some mosques.

One reason for low education rate here is poverty. "People are mostly laborers,
and so need earning hands as early as possible and thus very few send their
children to school," says the Imam. After primary schooling, fewer send their
children to high school or senior secondary school that are in Pucci Khajuri, a
Hindu-dominated area on the other side of the Pushta Road that divides Khajuri
Khas area into Kacchi Khajuri and Pucci Khajuri.

Kacchi Khajuri and Pucci Khajuri are part of Khajuri Khas area. The Pushta Road
linking Delhi with Uttar Pradesh divides Khajuri Khas into two localities, not
only geographically but also development-wise. The Hindu-dominated Pucci Khajuri
has all facilities including High Schools. Boys from the dominating community of
Gurjars in Pucci Khajuri harass boys and girls from Kacchi Khajuri - the
Muslim-dominated area. And here lies the second reason why literacy is low in
Kacchi Khajuri.

Pucci Khajuri has Government Boys and Girls Senior Secondary School. It has
Government Sarvodaya Boys and Girls School. A deadly stampede at government
senior secondary school on September 10 - in which five girls (three Muslims)
from Kacchi Khajuri area were killed and scores others injured - has further
alienated Kacchi Khajuri residents from Pucci Khajuri. An independent
fact-finding team has concluded that the stampede was caused by sexual
harassment of girls from Kacchi Khajuri by the boys from Pucci Khajuri. Now the
area of victims demands upgradation of the lone government primary school into
senior secondary school, at least for girls, at this stage. Otherwise, many have
made up mind to withdraw their girls from the school.

On the surface there is no communal tension between the two localities. However,
one can feel anger and disappointment in residents of Kacchi Khajuri.

The two colonies came into being almost at the same time but one, dominated by
Gurjars, got progress and development very fast while the Muslim area was left
to lurch. Besides schools, the Pucci Khajuri area has drinking water facilities,
government ration shop, a hospital and pucca roads, leaving Kacchi Khajuri
seething with anger. Their women and children have to cross accident-prone
Pushta Road to fetch drinking water and ration from Pucci Khajuri. While Pucci
Khajuri got status of authorised colony long ago, Kacchi Khajuri got the same
only recently.

The ward councilor of the area (Mr Ranbeer) is from Congress while the MLA (Mr
Mohan Singh Bisht) - who has more power and grants at his command for
developmental work in his area - is a BJP man. When people of Kacchi Khajuri
approach the BJP MLA he does not listen to them saying they did not vote for
him, say the residents. The area falls in the Karawal Nagar Assembly segment in
Northeast Delhi, a minority concentration district, with a population of
17,63,712 (Census 2001). The MP of this Lok Sabha constituency is Mr Jaiprakash
Aggarwal, a Congressman.

While the people of Kacchi Khajuri elect their representatives regularly as a
religious duty development has so far eluded them. They don't know how long this
will go on.

Agricultural sector fared well in fiscal year 2009
RECORDER REPORT

KARACHI (October 30 2009): Agricultural sector has performed well in FY09 and
achieved a growth of 4.7 percent against the target of 3.5 percent mainly due to
higher support price. "A robust agriculture sector performance has provided a
major impetus to GDP growth in last fiscal year, with both, the crops and the
livestock sub-sectors exhibiting above-target growth," said the State Bank
annual report on economy.
The particularly impressive contribution by crops was a result of clearer
incentives to farmers in terms of higher prices, which motivated them to
increase area under cultivation, it added. The most prominent feature of the
FY09 agri growth profile is the record harvest of three major crops including
wheat, rice and maize, that together generally account for around 59 percent of
value addition by major crops and in FY09 this share reached 62.7 percent, the
SBP said.
Consequently, despite a massive decline of 21.7 percent in sugarcane output,
major crops, in aggregate, recorded an impressive growth of 7.7 percent in FY09
against the target of 4.5 percent. The growth in minor crops was also impressive
despite production declines in few crops including canola, onions, mangoes and
some pulses; the 3.6 percent growth seen in FY09 was higher than the target of
2.0 percent.
Similarly, the 3.7 percent growth in the livestock sub-sector is also above 3.2
percent annual target. This year, there were no major incidences of virus attack
in poultry or livestock animals in the country, and the sub-sector also
benefited from better availability of fodder in non-irrigated fields following
extended monsoon and winter rains.
The report said the livestock growth prospects look bright as domestic demand
for dairy and meat products are projected to remain strong, driven by changing
lifestyles on the back of increased nominal incomes. Moreover, rising external
demand, particularly from Middle Eastern countries, also offers opportunities
for significant growth in this sector.

Economy to grow by 2.5-3.5 pc in 2009-10: SBP
Warns against too much reliance on western markets for exports

By Saad Hasan

KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Thursday said that Pakistans GDP
growth is projected to remain between 2.5 per cent and 3.5 per cent during
2009-10 if the manufacturing and agricultural sectors performed well.
There is already some recovery in the countrys industrial production as the
11-month negative growth in the Large Scale Manufacturing (LSM) sector is likely
to turn positive in the first quarter, from July to September, it said in its
economic review report for fiscal 2008-09.
However, the crippling factors like energy shortage and inter-corporate circular
debt, which pulled down economic growth last year to just 2 per cent, continue
to pose serious challenges. While the SBP has not mentioned the repercussions of
the recent cut in gas supply to many factories in northern parts of the country,
industry people say it will lead to decline in production.
If it had not been for record harvest of three major crops of wheat, rice and
maize, the growth would have been negligible last year, the report said, adding
agriculture will continue to play a vital role in deciding the growth
trajectory.
Growth in the services sector, which is mainstay of the economy, dropped to
eight-year low to just 3.9 per cent as transport, storage, communication and
financial industry suffered from weak domestic demand.
The double digit CPI inflation averaged at 20.8 per cent throughout 2008-09,
eating into the household budgets. It is projected to remain between 10 and 12
per cent this year, the report said.
Last year saw all the macroeconomic indicators sliding down as a consequence of
internal and external issues. Rise in international commodity prices swelled the
import bill, suicide attacks scared off investors and fiscal deficit increased
as the cash-strapped government tried to meet subsidy-laden expenditures.
By end of 2008, the government had no choice but to enter an IMF-sponsored
macroeconomic stabilisation programme to avert the balance of payment crisis,
which rose following a steep fall in the countrys foreign exchange reserves.
The report shows that the programme did help in contracting fiscal and current
account deficit. Fiscal deficit dropped to Rs 680.4 billion during fiscal
2008-09 from Rs 777.2 billion in the preceding year. That was achieved in part
by doing away with energy-related subsidies.
However, the SBP said, the governments move to cut development expenditure was
less welcoming as it badly affected the construction-related industries. For the
current fiscal year, the SBP has projected the fiscal and current account
deficits to remain between 4.7 per cent and 5.2 per cent of GDP. Last year, the
two deficits were 5.2 per cent and 5.3 per cent, respectively.
Deficit in the current account, which represents payment receipts between a
country and the rest of the world, has improved on back of slump in imports and
substantial increase in remittances sent home by expatriates.
The central bank expects the trend to continue as exports pick up and
remittances continue to rise. But resurgence in import growth and doubts over
foreign exchange flows pose some threat, it added.
The SBP has cautioned the government against too much reliance on Western
markets, devastated by the global financial crisis, for the countrys exports.
It insisted that regional markets should be explored.
Slowdown in economy should not hinder the efforts to expand the tax base,
especially when day-to-day expenditures of the government are expected to rise
in the wake of the ongoing war against terrorists, it said.
In the past year, the government easily managed to borrow from the commercial
banks without crowding out the private sector because of subdued demand for
finances, it said, warning that this state of affairs cannot continue now.
It emphasised on immediate need to foster a culture of savings at home as
Pakistan might find it difficult to access international capital markets at
reasonable cost. To mobilise savings, it is necessary to build savings
institutions that can tap pension and provident funds, it added.

Is Egypt benefiting financially from the plight of the people of Gaza?
By Iqbal Tamimi
1/11/2009
URL:http://palestinian.ning.com/profiles/blogs/is-egypt-benefiting

The wheelchairs brought by the convoy to the disabled in Gaza

No one understands why the Egyptian authorities are insisting on making any
effort to help the Gaza people a total misery.
The humanitarian convoy `Miles of Smiles' that is bringing aid to disabled
people in Gaza is made of many good ordinary people who abandoned their jobs and
home comforts to bring some help to the needy in Gaza, yet since 3 weeks they
are held in Port Said in Egypt and forced to pay a $5.000 fine every single day
for being on an Egyptian `floor' even though they are held and delayed by the
Egyptian authorities.
The Egyptian authorities are insisting that the convoy should only go by sea to
AlAreesh instead of the usual path of previous convoys. Even though there is no
reason what so ever that they should not be allowed to go by land.
The convoy members proposed to the Egyptian authorities that they can travel at
night and load the aid in big trucks, but they were refused such permission.
The convoy also offered to cover all the vehicles just in case the Egyptian
authorities are worried that Israel would know that Egypt is helping the
disabled and the needy in Gaza, or should the authorities were worried that such
convoy will gain the emotional support and momentum from the local Egyptians who
are frustrated by their own government's policies, but they were refused such
solution as well.
They also offered to go in individual vehicles one at a time and not as a
convoy, and their request was denied too.
They even proposed that instead of paying $100.000 cost fee just to go through
the sea from Port Saed to AlAreesh, that they can donate $30.000-40.000 for any
local charity project in Port Said, and be allowed to continue their trip by
land, but the Egyptian authorities also refused this proposal and said NO.
Every single solution proposed by the humanitarian aid group ' Mile of Smiles'
was rejected by the Egyptian authorities.
All the above proposals were refused by the Egyptian government, even though the
same people on the convoy came earlier in June along with the 'Hope' convoy and
entered then from Rafah.
The Egyptian authorities also allowed the convoy of George Galloway to go
through the same route only two months ago, what is going on? Why they are
tightening their fists on every help coming to Gaza?
Is Egypt benefiting financially and economically and politically from the Gaza
plight? By the way does anyone know how much money was pouring in Egypt through
fining the convoys? Pricing the supplies that are bought in Egypt? The expenses
and costs those humanitarian convoy members have paid on stamps and living cost
day by day? Thousands of people came to help Gaza through Egypt and held against
their will in Egypt for long periods...does anyone have a calculator guys?
I would love to receive any comments on such costs.
Shame on those whose pockets' swell with money out of the misery of the hungry,
the poor, the homeless and the disabled.

'Wahhabi terrorism helps West achieve goals'

A top Iranian army commander says the West is using 'Wahhabi terrorism' to sow
seeds of discord among Muslims around the world. "Today Wahhabi thought is
paving the way to legitimize the presence of US and NATO forces [in the region]
but the United States and NATO will be burnt in this plot,"
http://www.presstv.com/detail.aspx?id=110084&sectionid=351020101

A top Iranian army commander says the West is using 'Wahhabi terrorism' to sow
seeds of discord among Muslims around the world.

Chief-of-Staff of Iran's Joint Armed Forces, Major General Hassan
Firouzabadi, says Wahhabi terrorists are helping arrogant powers
achieve their goals in the region.

"Today Wahhabi thought is paving the way to legitimize the presence
of US and NATO forces [in the region] but the United States and NATO
will be burnt in this plot," Mehr news agency quoted Firouzabadi as saying.

The Iranian commander's comment came two weeks after at least 41
people, including seven senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary
Guard Corps (IRGC), were killed in a bombing during a unity gathering
of Shia and Sunni tribal leaders in the town of Pishin on the
Iran-Pakistan border.

The Pakistan-based Jundallah terrorist group claimed responsibility for the
deadly attack.

Spearheaded by Abdulmalek Rigi, Jundallah terrorists have staged a
tidal wave of bombings and terrorist attacks in Iran, one of which left
at least 25 Iranians dead in early June.

Abdulhamid Rigi, the apprehended brother of the Jundallah point
man, told Press TV in a recent interview that Abdulmalek had held
several "confidential" meetings with FBI and CIA agents in Karachi and
Islamabad.

Firouzabadi went on to say that western plans for the region were behind the
'war, bloodshed and terror' in the Middle East.

"The aim of these brutal measures was to create discord among Muslim nations and
prevent Muslim unity," he said.

During the past weeks, a series of terrorist attacks hit Iraq, Pakistan and
Afghanistan.

The deadly attacks, carried out by al-Qaeda and Salafi terrorists,
claimed the lives of hundreds of people in the Islamic states.

Only in Iraq, twin car bombings in Baghdad killed more than 160 people and
injured over 700 others last week.

And in Pakistan, an explosive laden car ripped through the crowded market in
Peshawar and killed more than 105 people.

																						 By John Pilger

																						 October 29, 2009 "Information Clearing House" --
																						 The
aircraft flew low, following the Mekong River west from Vietnam. Once
over Cambodia, what we saw silenced all of us on board. There appeared
to be nobody, no movement, not even an animal, as if the great
population of Asia had stopped at the border.

Whole villages were empty. Chairs and beds, pots and mats lay in the
street, a car on its side, a bent bicycle. Behind fallen power lines
lay or sat a single human shadow; it did not move. From the paddies,
lines of tall wild grass followed straight lines. Fertilised by the
remains of thousands upon thousands of men, women and children, these
marked common graves in a nation where as many as two million people,
or more than a quarter of the population, were missing.

At the liberation of the Nazi death camp in Belsen in 1945, The Times
correspondent wrote: It is my duty to describe something beyond the
imagination of mankind. That was how I felt in 1979 when I entered
Cambodia, a country sealed from the outside world for almost four years
since Year Zero.

Year Zero had begun shortly after sunrise on April 17, 1975 when Pol
Pots Khmer Rouge guerrillas entered the capital, Phnom Penh. They wore
black and marched in single file along the wide boulevards. At one
oclock, they ordered the city abandoned. The sick and wounded were
forced at gunpoint from their hospital beds; families were separated;
the old and disabled fell beside the road. Dont take anything with
you, the men in black ordered. You will be coming back tomorrow.

Tomorrow never came. An age of slavery began. Anybody who owned cars
and such luxuries, anybody who lived in a city or town or had a
modern skill, anybody who knew or worked with foreigners, was in grave
danger; some were already under sentence of death. Out of the Royal
Cambodian Ballet company of 500 dancers, perhaps 30 survived. Doctors,
nurses, engineers, teachers were starved, or worked to death, or
murdered.

For me, entering the silent, grey humidity of Phnom Penh was like
walking into a city the size of Manchester in the wake of a nuclear
cataclysm which had spared only the buildings. There was no power, no
drinking water, no shops, no services of any kind. At the railway
station trains stood empty at various stages of interrupted departure.
Personal belongings and pieces of clothing fluttered on the platforms,
as they fluttered on the mass graves beyond.

I walked along Monivong Avenue to the National Library which had been
converted to pigsty, as a symbol, all its books burned. It was
dream-like. There was wasteland where the Gothic Roman Catholic
cathedral had stood; it had been dismantled stone by stone. When the
afternoon monsoon rains broke, the deserted streets were suddenly awash
with money. With every downpour a worthless fortune of new and unused
banknotes sluiced out of the Bank of Cambodia, which the Khmer Rouge
had blown up as they fled.

Inside, a cheque book lay open on the counter. A pair of glasses rested
on an open ledger. I slipped and fell on a floor brittle with coins.

For the first few hours I had no sense of even the remains of a
population. The few human shapes I glimpsed seemed incoherent, and on
catching sight of me, would flit into a doorway. A child ran into a
wardrobe lying on its side which was his or her refuge. In a crumbling
Esso filling station an old woman and three emaciated infants squatted
around a pot containing a mixture of roots and leaves, which bubbled
over a fire fuelled with paper money: such grotesque irony: people in
need of everything had money to burn.

At a primary school called Tuol Sleng, I walked through what had become
the interrogation unit and the torture and massacre unit. Beneath
iron beds I found blood and tufts of hair still on the floor. Speaking
is absolutely forbidden, said a sign. Before doing something,
anything, the authorisation of the warden must be obtained.

After a while, one sound had a terrible syncopation: rising and falling
day and night. Without milk and medicines, children were stricken with
preventable disease like dysentery. It seemed that the very fabric of
the society had begun to unravel. The first surveys revealed that many
women had stopped menstruating.

What compounded this was the isolation imposed on Cambodia by the West
because its liberators, the Vietnamese, had come from the wrong side of
the cold war, having driven America out of their country in 1975.
Cambodia had been the Wests dirty secret since President Richard Nixon
and his national security adviser Henry Kissinger ordered a secret
bombing, extending the war in Vietnam into Cambodia in the early
1970s, killing hundreds of thousands of peasants. If this doesnt
work, an aide heard Nixon say to Kissinger, itll be your ass,
Henry. It worked in handing Pol Pot his chance to seize power.

When I arrived in the aftermath, no Western aid had reached Cambodia.
Only Oxfam defied the Foreign Office in London, which had lied that the
Vietnamese were obstructing aid. In September 1979, a DC-8 jet took off
from Luxembourg, filled with enough penicillin, vitamins and milk to
restore some 70,000 children -- all of it paid for by Daily Mirror
readers who had responded to my reports and Eric Pipers pictures in
two historic issues of the paper which sold every copy.

Following on from the Mirror, on October 30, 1979, ITV broadcast Year
Zero: the silent death of Cambodia, the documentary I made with the
late David Munro. Forty sacks of post arrived at the ATV studios in
Birmingham, with 1 million in the first few days. This is for
Cambodia, wrote an anonymous Bristol bus driver, enclosing his weeks
wage. An elderly woman sent her pension for two months. A single parent
sent her savings of 50. People expressed that unremitting sense of
decency and community which is at the core of British society.
Unsolicited, they gave more than 20 million. This helped rescue normal
life in faraway country. It restored a clean water supply in Phnom
Penh, stocked hospitals and schools, supported orphanages and re-opened
a desperately needed clothing factory.

Such an extraordinary public outpouring broke the US and British
governments blockade of Cambodia. Incredibly, the Thatcher government
had continued to support the defunct Pol Pot regime in the United
Nations and even sent the SAS to train his exiled troops in camps in
Thailand and Malaysia. Last March, the former SAS soldier Chris Ryan,
now a best-selling author, lamented in a newspaper interview when John
Pilger, the foreign correspondent, discovered we were training the
Khmer Rouge in the Far east [we] were sent home and I had to return the
10,000 wed been given for food and accommodation.

Today, Pol Pot is dead and several of his elderly henchmen are on trial
in a UN/Cambodian court for crimes against humanity. Henry Kissinger,
whose bombing opened the door to the nightmare of Year Zero, is still
at large. Cambodians remain desperately poor, dependent on an often
seedy tourism and sweated labour.

For me, their resilience remains almost magical. In the years that
followed their liberation, I never saw as many weddings or received as
many wedding invitations. They became symbols of life and hope. And
yet, only in Cambodia would a child ask an adult, as a twelve-year-old
asked me, with fear crossing his face: Are you a friend? Please say.

The Sunnah indicates that the one who wants to offer a sacrifice must stop
cutting his hair and nails and removing anything from his skin, from the
beginning of the ten days until after he has offered his sacrifice, because the
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "When you see the new
moon of Dhu’l-Hijjah, if any one of you wants to offer a sacrifice, then he
should stop cutting his hair and nails until he has offered his sacrifice."
According to another report he said: "He should not remove (literally, touch)
anything from his hair or skin."

Guantanamo won't close by January: Obama

CBC News
http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2009/11/18/obama-guantanamo.html

U.S. President Barack Obama signs an executive order to close the Guantanamo Bay
detention centre within a year during a ceremony in the Oval Office at the White
House in January. (Saul Loeb/AFP/Getty Images)U.S. President Barack Obama has
acknowledged that he will not be able to meet his pledge to close the
controversial detention centre at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, by January.
Obama also voiced support for the decision to try the self-professed Sept. 11
mastermind in a U.S. civilian court, predicting his conviction and subsequent
execution.
Obama made the comments in a series of TV interviews during his trip to Asia.
In an interview in Beijing with Fox News, Obama said he knew closing down the
prison at Guantanamo Bay was going to be difficult.
"It's hard not only because of the politics. People I think understandably are
fearful after a lot of years where they were told that Guantanamo was critical
to keeping terrorists out. So, I understood that that had to be processed, but
it's also just technically hard I just think as usual in Washington things
move slower than I anticipated.
"We are on a path and a process where I would anticipate that Guantanamo will be
closed next year," he said. "I'm not going to set an exact date because a lot of
this is also going to depend upon co-operation from Congress."
One of Obama's first acts as president was to sign an executive order to close
the facility within a year, a move he said would restore his countrys "moral
high ground."
But his plan ran into roadblocks. His administration found it difficult to find
countries willing to take in the more than 200 detainees.
As well, the U.S. Senate in May voted 90-6 against allowing funds requested to
shut down the facility or use the funds to transfer prisoners to U.S. soil.
The Bush administration used the facility to hold suspected terrorists following
the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. But critics have expressed outrage over the tough
interrogation techniques used on some of the detainees, saying it amounts to
torture. Critics have also complained that prisoners are held for years without
charges or trials.
In a separate interview, Obama defended the decision to bring Khalid Sheikh
Mohammed and four other detainees at Guantanamo Bay to trial in New York.
"I don't think it would be offensive at all when he's convicted and when the
death penalty is applied to him," Obama told NBC News.
But he added that, "I'm not going to be in that courtroom. That's the job of the
prosecutors, the judge and the jury."
Obama said Americans should have no concern about the capability of civilian
courts to try suspected terrorists.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder last week announced the decision to bring
Mohammed and four others detained at Guantanamo Bay to trial at a lower
Manhattan courthouse.
Appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, Holder was asked
what might happen if the suspects are acquitted.
"Failure is not an option. These are cases that have to be won. I don't expect
that we will have a contrary result," Holder said.
Critics of Holder's decision have argued the trial will give Mohammed a world
stage to spout hateful rhetoric.
But Holder said such concerns are misplaced, because judges can control unruly
defendants and any pronouncements by Mohammed would only make him look worse.
Holder said the public and the nation's intelligence secrets can be protected
during a public trial in civilian court.
The committee's top Republican, Jeff Sessions, criticized the decision, saying
it treats Mohammed like a common criminal.
"I believe this decision is dangerous, I believe it's misguided, I believe it's
unnecessary," Sessions said.

Scaremongering Muslim Interns, Undermining Democracy
Karin Friedemann
http://www.khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticleNew.asp?section=opinion&xfile=data/opi\
nion/2009/november/opinion_november106.xml
The Fort Hood massacre media orgy covered up the probably more politically
significant story of the attack on Muslim Congressional interns and CAIR by
David Gaubatz, who co-authored the Muslim Mafia with fellow Islamophobe and
Hoover Media Institute fellow Paul Sperry.
Gaubatz is a long-time professional supplier of neo-con disinformation. He is
the sole source of delusional right-wing claims that Saddam Hussein had WMDs and
shipped them out of the country — something that even George W. Bush does not
believe.
Representatives Sue Myrick (R-NC), John Shadegg (R-AZ), Paul Broun (R-GA), and
Trent Franks (R-AZ) publicly endorsed The Muslim Mafia in a Capitol Hill press
conference on October 14. The book accuses CAIR (Council for American-Islamic
Relations) of espionage and subversive jihad against the USA. On the basis of
The Muslim Mafia, the four Congresspersons, whose main support comes from
Christian Zionists and the Israel Lobby, accused CAIR of a sinister strategic
plan to place Muslim interns into Congressional offices to spy on Congress.
In reality, CAIR is a legitimate educational organisation with missions of
defending the right of American Muslims to practice Islam and of educating
American non-Muslims about Islam in order to improve Muslim-non-Muslim
relations. CAIR’s work differs little from those of other educational advocacy
and lobby groups, including those that are pro-Israel.
CAIR helps the US government serve the American public better by putting
American Muslims on Capitol Hill so that the voice of their constituency can be
heard more clearly. Even if a Muslim intern reported back to CAIR, what could
CAIR possibly do? CAIR’s power to direct political resources is at least two
orders of magnitude less than those of AIPAC.
AIPAC runs non-partisan institutes throughout American colleges and universities
explicitly to recruit interns to spy on congressmen. When interns report back to
AIPAC on deviation from pro-Israel orthodoxy, AIPAC springs into action either
to intimidate the offender into conformity or to target him for political
destruction in a poisoning of the American
political process.
Because Gaubatz has long been an Israeli lobby operative, his perception of
CAIR’s activities looks like a form of psychological projection of own
activities, particularly in regards to his involvement with the Society of
Americans for National Existence (SANE), which advocates arresting Muslims for
voluntarily practising Islam:
“Whereas, adherence to Islam as a Muslim is prima facie evidence of an act in
support of the overthrow of the US government through the abrogation,
destruction, or violation of the US Constitution and the imposition of Shariah
on the American people...It shall be a felony punishable by 20 years in prison
to knowingly act in furtherance of, or to support the, adherence to Shariah.”
Gaubatz is the former head of SANE’s Mapping Shariah Project: “It is our
task to conduct an extensive mapping of all the Islamic day schools, mosques,
and other identifiable organisations in the US and to determine which ones teach
or preach Islamic law, Shariah. This investigation will also map the leadership
of these Muslim organisations and their other affiliations.”
Until CAIR outed his racist anti-democratic political views, SANE’s founder
David Yerushalmi was a leading activist in Stop the Madrassa, an anti-Muslim
organisation connected with Islamic threat monger Daniel Pipes. Stop the
Madrassa mobbed-and-smeared Debby Almontaser over a T-shirt bearing the word
“Intifada” until she resigned from her position as principal of the Khalil
Gibran International Academy.
Gaubatz, Yerushalmi, and Pipes are busy little bees flying all over the place.
Silverstein famously received a $4.55 billion 9/11 payment under a double claim
on his six-week old World Trade Center insurance policy.
If people like Gaubatz, his friends, his Congressional supporters, and his
Zionist funders have their way, not only will the ongoing political prosecutions
of Muslim American leaders expand to include practically all Muslims, but the
Zionist intelligentsia will also have veto power over anyone seeking to serve in
the US government.
The pattern of stigmatisation, marginalisation, demonisation, and punishment of
Muslims and of anyone refusing to bow to Zionism is unmistakable. If extreme
Israel advocates succeed in the stigmatisation of Muslim interns, yet another
category of government jobs will effectively be reserved only to Israel Lobby
approved candidates in a process constituting a slow-speed coup killing American
democracy and putting ultimate control of the US government into the hands of
the hyper-wealthy Israel Lobby.

Pakistani military begins offensive in Waziristan
By James Cogan
23 June 2009http://www.wsws.org/articles/2009/jun2009/paki-j23.shtml

Pakistani troops have moved in force into South Waziristan, beginning
operations that are expected to escalate into a full-scale effort to drive the
Islamist Tehrik-e-Taliban movement from the tribal agency and prevent Afghan
insurgents using it as a safe haven to strike at US and NATO occupation forces
over the border.

The offensive follows bloody fighting and mass civilian displacement in late
April and May in the Swat Valley and other districts of North West Frontier
Province (NWFP), and operations last year against the Taliban in the tribal
agencies of Bajaur and Mohmand.

Reports over the past week suggest that the Pakistani army is establishing a
defensive cordon several hundred kilometres long, stretching along the main road
from Wana, the capital of South Waziristan in the south-west of the agency, to
the town of Jandola, in the north-east.

Pakistani troops with tanks and artillery have been deployed from bases
outside Jandola. Other army units have moved north from Wana and occupied high
ground past the town of Madijan. Aircraft are protecting the roads. In all, at
least 20,000 soldiers, Frontier Corp paramilitary personnel and police are
involved.

The US military considers South and North Waziristan as the most critical
areas of Pakistan to wrest from the control of the Taliban. In South Waziristan,
Tehrik-e-Taliban leader and local warlord, Baitullah Mehsud, can mobilise as
many as 15,000 fighters from among the Pashtun tribes, on the basis of
traditional tribal loyalties, religious beliefs and popular opposition to the US
invasion of Afghanistan. North Waziristan is the base of operations for the
Afghan Haqqani networkone of the most effective Taliban-linked insurgent
movements fighting the US-led occupation.

Houses and compounds allegedly occupied by Taliban targets have been
repeatedly bombed in both agencies by unmanned American Predator drones. Last
Sunday, missiles were fired at a home near the South Waziristan town of Makeen.
Five people allegedly linked to Baitullah Mehsud were reportedly killed. The
Obama administration has authorised at least 20 Predator attacks this year
inside Pakistani territoryall in violation of international law. The strikes,
however, have done little to disrupt the Taliban. Instead, the attacks have
killed over 700 civilians and fueled support for the Islamists.

US special envoy Richard Holbrooke visited Islamabad earlier this month to
repeat the Obama administrations demands for the Pakistani government launch a
ground offensive into the Waziristans. This week, as operations get underway,
Obamas National Security Advisor James Jones is travelling to Pakistans
capital. The purpose of the visit, according to the White House, is to
follow-up on the implementation of our new, comprehensive strategy.

The Pakistani militarys aim appears to be to seal off the Taliban-held areas
of South Waziristan from NWFP to the east and Balochistan province to the south,
before launching a major assault. The only escape routes for the militants would
be to the west over the border into Afghanistan, where they will be targeted by
US and NATO forces, or northward into North Waziristan the logical next target
for attack.

The other aim of the cordon is to prevent the Taliban launching attacks in
other areas of Pakistan. Since the government ordered troops into the Swat
Valley, militants have carried out or attempted suicide bombings in Peshawar,
Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi.

A Pakistani security expert told Time magazine last week: They [the
Taliban] will try to paralyse the country by striking at the major cities and
business hubs. Anticipating greater violence as troops move into South
Waziristan, the United Nations has declared the country unsafe for the
families of its representatives and urged them to leave.

The killing in South Waziristan has already begun. On Friday and Saturday,
Pakistani officials reported that F-16s, helicopter gunships and ground
artillery had destroyed a Taliban training camp, two seminaries and three houses
allegedly belonging to Islamist leaders. They claimed that at least 50 Taliban
militants were killed, though there is no means of verifying the government
casualty reports.

Clashes were also reported with militants attempting to block the
Wana-Jandola road. Troops are said to be working to clear the highway of the
debris, mines and roadside bombs. In North Waziristan, Taliban fighters moved
out of their mountain strongholds over the weekend and launched rocket attacks
on several military bases. They also ambushed an army supply convoy, wounding
three soldiers.

The offensive is likely to result in substantial losses for the Pakistani
army and the Taliban. The greatest impact, however, will be on civilians. Most
of Baitullah Mehsuds fighters live with their families in relatively isolated
and poverty-stricken villages in mountainous regions, eking out an existence by
subsistence pastoralist activity and agriculture. Like the US forces in
Afghanistan, the Pakistani military relies almost entirely on air strikes to
attack remote localities.

One of the operational commanders during the Swat Valley offensive, Major
General Sajjad Ghani, spelt out the murderous intentions of the Pakistani
military in the Waziristans. He told a press conference this week: The
hard-core [Islamists], there is only one thing. You have to kill them. They are
like a mad dog, and what can you do with a mad dog? You must kill it.

According to a government spokesman, 45,000 people had left the agency before
the cordon was thrown up. This suggests that there are still close to 400,000
civilians trapped in what the military now treats as a free fire zone.

Fighting is still continuing in the areas that were targetted by earlier
government offensives. Air strikes were launched over the weekend against an
alleged Taliban base in Bajaur agency, which the military claimed to have
cleared of anti-government fighters more than five months ago. Clashes also took
place in the Upper Dir district of NWFP between Taliban militants and local
villagers who have enlisted in a government-sponsored lashkar, or tribal
militia.

At his press conference, General Ghani reported that the army had still not
fully secured the Swat Valley and that as many as 3,000 militants and leaders
had escaped the offensive. He suggested that they may have gone to either the
Waziristans or Afghanistan. While the figure cannot be verified, Ghani claimed
that 1,600 militants and some 100 soldiers had died in eight weeks of
combat.

Large numbers of civilians have been displaced by the fighting. Some 500,000
fled from Bajaur and Mohmand last year and have not been able to return to their
homes. A further 2.5 million people, predominantly ethnic Pashtuns, were forced
out of Swat and other districts of NWFP in the last several months. It is
believed that 80 percent found temporary refuge with relatives, friends or
sympathetic strangers, but their resources are running out.

At least 300,000 displaced persons are crowded in unsanitary tent cities
scattered across NWFP. With the number seeking shelter in the refugee camps
growing each day, UN officials and relief agencies are warning of disease
epidemics as the monsoon season begins.===
US drone strike kills 80 Pakistanis
By Tom Eley
25 June 2009http://www.wsws.org/articles/2009/jun2009/paki-j25.shtml

On Tuesday, an unmanned US Predator drone fired missiles into a funeral
procession in the Pakistani region of South Waziristan, killing as many as 80
people and maiming dozens more. It was the deadliest US attack within Pakistan
to date.

The mourners had gathered for the funeral of seven victims of another US
drone attack that had taken place earlier the same day. US media accounts
described the target as a Taliban training center in South Waziristan.
According to local sources, those killed and wounded in the attack were mostly
civilians. The US has stepped up its drone attacks on South Waziristan in
preparation for a major ground offensive by the Pakistani military. Pakistani
fighter jets have also been bombing the region.

Last Sunday, US drones fired missiles at a home in the South Waziristan
district of Makeen, killing at least five. On Thursday, June 18, a US drone
bombed a house close to the capital of South Waziristan, Wana, killing one. When
villagers ran to rescue those they feared trapped in the rubble, the unmanned
plane fired its missiles again, killing 12 more. Tuesdays attack on the funeral
procession in the village of Najmaral, also in the Makeen district, appears to
have been aimed at Pakistani militant leader Baitulla Mehsud. Mehsud was not at
the funeral, which was held for a tribal leader and six others killed in that
mornings attack. The increasing carnage inflicted on the Pakistanis is the
direct result of the escalation of military violence in both Afghanistan and
Pakistan ordered by President Obama. The new administration has already sent an
additional 12,000 US soldiers as part of a surge that will bring the US troop
presence in Afghanistan by the end of the year to 60,000.

At the same time, the Obama administration is extending the war into
Pakistan, both through an increase in US missile attacks on an ever-widening
swath of the country and through the exertion of pressure on the Pakistani
regime of President Asif Ali Zardari to intensify the Pakistani militarys
violence in the regions bordering Afghanistan.

This policy has already produced a sharp rise in civilian casualties in both
countries. In Pakistan, millions have been displaced in areas such as the Swat
Valley as a result of the Pakistani military offensive.
In line with its escalation, the Obama administration this month sacked the
US military commander in Afghanistan, General David McKiernan, replacing him
with General Stanley McChrystal, a Special Forces commander who has directed
military assassination squads.
That the increase in drone attacks is part of a deliberate policy of
targeting civilians in regions controlled by insurgent forces opposed both to
the US and the Pakistani government is underscored by this weeks visit by
Obamas national security advisor, General James Jones, to
Islamabad. According to the White House, the purpose of Joness visit is to
personally oversee the implementation of our new, comprehensive strategy.
The US drone attack on the funeral procession exposes the hypocrisy of
Obamas professed outrage over the Iranian governments repression of students
and others protesting the June 12 elections. In just one day of drone attacks in
neighboring Pakistan, the US killed more than twice as many civilians as have
been reportedly killed in the course of the protests in Iran.
Local residents who survived Tuesdays attack said the drone fired three
missiles into the crowd of mourners. After the prayers ended, people were
asking each other to leave the area as drones were hovering, Mohammad Saeed
Khan, 35, told Agence France-Presse from a hospital in North Waziristan. Khan
lost his leg in the US attack.

He added, First, two drones fired two missiles. It created havoc. There was
smoke and dust everywhere. Injured people were crying and asking for help...
They fired the third missile after a minute, and I fell on the ground.
Another local resident explained to Free Speech Radio News, Many
people were present at the funeral of a commander who was killed in a US attack.
In the morning we heard a huge sound. Everyone understood it was a US drone, as
people here are used to hearing the huge sounds of US drone attacks.

He continued, Most of the local people want to leave this area, but they
cannot leave due to their poverty. I believe many innocent civilians are among
the dead. It is our culture and religious teaching that most people attend
funeral prayers, so it means that not all killed would be militants.
Villagers were unable to provide help to those injured for hours, as US
drones continued to hover overhead, according to Pakistani media. The US has
carried out 43 drone attacks in Pakistan since January, 2008. About half of
these have taken place under the Obama administration, leading to a death toll
of well over 700.

The US does not officially comment on or claim responsibility for the drone
attacks, and Pakistan officially condemns them as a violation of its
sovereignty. The remote-controlled drone attacks in Pakistan are run by the
Central Intelligence Agency. The attack on the funeral in South Waziristan comes
less than one week after the new US commander for the Af-Pak theater, General
McChrystal, announced a change in the rules of engagement in Afghanistan
supposedly aimed at limiting the number of civilian casualties resulting from
air strikes.
The sharp increase in drone attacks in Pakistan exposes the official
professions of concern for civilian casualties as mere lies. A recent United
Nations study reveals that civilian casualties in Afghanistan increased by 40
percent in 2008, and since Obama took office, the use of air power has increased
in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Just days before Tuesdays drone attacks, the Pentagon released the results
of its investigation into the May 4 massacre of civilians in a US air attack on
the village of Granai in Afghanistans western province of Farah. The Pentagon,
which originally denied that any civilians died, grudgingly acknowledged the
death of 26. The death toll was far higher. The Afghan government says 140
civilians were killed, among them 93 children.

Stop drone attacks on Pakistan soil

Yousuf Raza Gilani (R) speaks with General James Jones (2nd
L) during a meeting at the Prime Minister's House in
Islamabad.

Islamabad once again loudly disapproves of US drone
attacks on Pakistan's soil after attacks in the northwest of the country killed
at least 80 people.

Washington must stop drone attacks on Pakistan's
soil, Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani told US President Barack
Obama's top Security Adviser General James Jones, who is on a two-day visit to
Islamabad.

He said that Washington must stop the drone attacks 'in order
to ensure success of Pakistan's strategy for isolating the militants from the
tribes'.

On Tuesday, two US drones attacked suspected Taliban militants
gathered for a funeral in South Waziristan, Pakistani military and
administration officials said.

The drones sometimes kill innocent
civilians and are highly unpopular among the Pakistani public, the officials
said.

Jones visited Islamabad as part of a short regional tour that has
already taken him to neighboring Afghanistan to assess the United States' new
strategy in the region.

He also met President Asif Ali Zardari and Army
Chief General Ashfaq Kayani. However in a statement that he issued, he made no
mention of any rift over the use of drones to target militants in the lawless
tribal belt.

"Together, the US and Pakistan are enhancing border
cooperation, trade, energy and economic development to help Pakistanis face the
challenges posed by extremists," the statement said.

"Terrorism is not
simply the enemy of America - it is a direct and urgent threat to the Pakistani
people."

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abdul Basit, who on
Thursday echoed his prime minister's words said that the drone attacks were
'unacceptable and must be stopped'.

This is while during the latest
violence, helicopter gunships attacked a seminary in the village of Lehra in the
Kurram tribal area, killing at least five militants, local government official
Mohammad Yasin said.

Jones is heading for India next on the last leg of
his tour of South Asia.

US quietly expedites aid for Pak military operations: :
Prior to the Swat operation in the spring, Pakistan's army chief General Ashfaq
Pervez Kayani asked that the US quickly deliver 10 Russian-built Mi-17s.
According to the US newspaper, both US President Barack Obama and US army chief
Admiral Mike Mullen personally intervened to fulfil his request; four copters
were leased in June and the remaining provided to Pakistan under various
authorities.

KARACHI: The United States has quietly rushed millions of dollars worth of
military equipment to Pakistani forces in recent months, the NYTimes quoted
American and Pakistani officials as saying.
Prior to the Swat operation in the spring, Pakistans army chief General Ashfaq
Pervez Kayani asked that the US quickly deliver 10 Russian-built Mi-17s.
According to the US newspaper, both US President Barack Obama and US army chief
Admiral Mike Mullen personally intervened to fulfil his request; four copters
were leased in June and the remaining provided to Pakistan under various
authorities.
The report
(http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/29/world/asia/29weapons.html?ref=world) says
that a whole range of other weapons, hardware and sensors have been provided to
the Pakistan army. These include spare parts for Cobra helicopter gunships,
night vision goggles, body armour and eavesdropping equipment.
Presently, American military surveillance drones are supporting the Waziristan
operation by feeding video images and target information to Pakistani ground
commanders. The Pentagon has also quietly provided the Pakistani Air Force with
high-resolution, infrared sensors for its F-16 warplanes, which Pakistan is
using to target its attacks on Taliban strongholds in South Waziristan.
Weve put military assistance to Pakistan on a wartime footing, as up to now it
has been in a peacetime process, the paper quoted Lt. Col. Mark Wright, a
Pentagon spokesman, as saying. We are doing everything within our power to
assist Pakistan in improving its counterinsurgency capabilities.
The number of American Special Forces soldiers and support personnel who are
training and advising Pakistani Army and paramilitary troops has doubled in the
past eight months, to 150.
Despite the expedited assistance, Pakistani officials are still upset with the
pace of disbursement of all kinds of aid. Pakistani officials are particularly
unhappy about the USs refusal to share some sought-after high-tech military
equipment, like Apache helicopters and Predator drones.
Pakistani authorities are also reluctant to publicize the aid they have been
receiving for the ongoing operations, the report notes. It points to army
spokesman Athar Abbass statement that the South Waziristan action was a purely
Pakistani enterprise, unaided by the US. Let us finish the job on our own, he
told reporters,
However, the report indicates that the US govt does not have a problem with the
Pakistani authorities downplaying its involvement. An American adviser in
Pakistan, who was granted anonymity to discuss internal United States policy,
said, US current military assistance either demonstrates US resolve and offsets
anti-Americanism, or is deliberately underplayed to boost Pakistani military and
political credibility, and the latter meets our policy objectives more closely.

Lynne Stewart & Mohamed Yousry convictions affirmed&bail revoked by Federal
Appeals Court

  This
just happened this morning (Nov 17). I have confirmed it from other
news sources. For those near New York City, there will be a rally in
support of Lynne Stewart at 4 PM today Tuesday Nov 17 at John Payne
Park across the street from 500 Pearl St. Lynne Stewart is a great
advocate for justice in the world. I believe the appeals court
decision is a significant step and part of the pattern of increased
repression in the "USA" and also part of the new government attempt to
reinforce the official 911 story and rationale for endless war. I think
it is important to support Lynne Stewart and Mohamed Yousry. ~ David

Lynne Stewart's Conviction and Revokes Her BailBy Mark HamblettNovember 18,
2009Disbarred
defense attorney Lynne Stewart's bail was revoked this morning as a
federal appeals court affirmed her conviction and criticized the short
prison sentence she was ordered to serve for providing material support
to a terror conspiracy.A
divided U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit said that Southern
District Judge John G. Koeltl must take a second look at the sentence
of two years and four months he meted out in 2006, a stretch that Ms.
Stewart observed she could do "standing on her head." (NYLJ, Oct. 17,
2006)Judges Robert D. Sack and Guido Calabresi were in the majority in United
States v. Stewart,
06-5015-cr, holding that Judge Koeltl needed to revisit the weight he
gave to mitigating factors that led him to give Ms. Stewart the
sentence. The government had asked for 30 years.

See a timeline of the Stewart case.Judge
John M. Walker Jr. dissented, saying the majority did not go far enough
and that he was "at a loss" for "any rationale that could reasonably
justify a sentence of 28 months."Ms.
Stewart, 70, was convicted by a jury of helping imprisoned blind Sheikh
Omar Abdel Rahmen communicate with his followers in the outlawed
Islamic Group in Egypt (NYLJ, Feb. 14, 2005).
She was tried along with interpreter Mohamed Yousry for a plot to pass
messages from Sheikh Rahman, who is serving a life sentence for
seditious conspiracya violation of Special Administrative Measures put
in place to muzzle the sheikh and prevent him from signaling Islamic
Group to abandon a cease-fire on terror attacks.A
third defendant, Ahmed Abdel Sattar, was convicted of the more serious
crime of conspiracy to kill and kidnap people in another country. The
Second Circuit upheld all three convictions this morning and the
sentences of Mr. Yousry and Mr. Sattar, but it was divided on the
Stewart sentence.Judge
Robert Sack, who wrote the majority's 125-page opinion, said, "Because
the district court declined to find whether Stewart committed perjury
at trial, we cannot conclude that the mitigating factors found to
support her sentence can reasonably bear the weight assigned to them."He
continued, "This is so particularly in light of the seriousness of her
criminal conduct, her responsibilities as a member of the bar, and her
role as counsel for Abdel Rahman."Judge Walker said he would reverse regardless
of the almost unlimited deference now given to judges at sentencing."Because
Stewart's sentence is so out of line with the extreme seriousness of
her criminal conduct (and, not surprisingly given the fact, with what
the Guidelines recommend), notwithstanding the considerable deference
due the district court at sentencing, I conclude that Stewart's
sentence is not only procedurally unreasonable, but also substantively
unreasonable and an abuse of discretion," Judge Walker said.Having
affirmed their convictions, the circuit directed Judge Koeltl to revoke
the bail of Ms. Stewart and Mr. Yousry pending their appeals and to
order them to surrender to the U.S. Marshal to begin serving their
sentences.@|Mark Hamblett can be reached at mhamblett@....

African Union holds key to Rafah Crossing: "Will they use it?"
American Lamentations
" This is a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation." Ezekiel 19: 10-14
Sunday, November 1, 2009
http://namaw.blogspot.com/2009/11/african-union-holds-key-to-rafah.html

On October 29, 2009, the National Association of Muslim American Women (NAMAW),
a US based NGO and member of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable
Rights of the Palestinians, sent an appeal to all of the members of the African
Union requesting that the African Union take jurisdiction over the Rafah
Crossing, and provide the necessary military and security support to insure that
the crossing is operated safely, and efficiently.
The African Union, which has adopted the UN Rome Statute as a guide for its own
set of human rights laws, has the authority to take jurisdiction from Egypt,
since Egypt is a member of the African Union, and bound by its human rights
laws, and is subject to the African Unions authority. It is clear that by
keeping the crossing closed, and denying Palestinians humanitarian aid,
including food, medicines and medical supplies, and also building materials and
equipment, that Egypt is in violation of Articles 6 and 7 of the Rome Statute
that prohibits genocide and crimes against humanity. Egypt is also blatantly
violating the African Unions human rights laws and principles.
It is clear from even a cursory review of the Rome Statute that both Israel and
Egypt are in almost certainly in violation of article 6, which prohibits
genocide. The Statute describes genocide as acts committed to destroy, in whole
or part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group ... The statute
includes such acts as killing members of the group, causing serious bodily
harm or mental harm to members of the group, deliberately inflicting on the
group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in
whole or in part, imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group,
forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
They are also likely in violation of Article 7, Crimes against Humanity which
is described by the Rome Statute as acts committed as part of a widespread or
systemic attack directed against any civilian population, with knowledge of the
attack. According to the Rome Statute such acts include, but may not be limited
to murder, extermination, torture, rape, persecution against any identifiable
group or collectivity on political, racial, national, ethnic, cultural,
religious, gender or other grounds...
Under the above mentioned definition, the Rome Statue also criminalizes
apartheid, and other inhumane acts of a similar character intentionally causing
great suffering or serious injury to body, or physical health.

Whereas much is being made of Israels history of alleged war crimes and refusal
to abide by UN resolutions in respect to Palestine, and especially in respect to
its continued and illegal economic siege on Gaza, little has been said about the
fact that Israels embargo could not succeed if Egypt, a supposedly Muslim and
Arab nation/state, was not providing full support and cooperation, making it
possibly a co-conspirator with Israel in the conduct of these crimes.
Since there is little hope that either the EU or US will use their considerable
influence over Israel, to lift the illegal embargo, it is clear that the only
hope now is for the people of the Muslim and Arab world to come together to
insist that Egypt end its possibly criminal cooperation with Israel, and act
according to international law by opening the Rafah Crossing.
There must also be greater pressure applied by the international Muslim
religious authorities who can call for Muslim and Arab boycotts of Egyptian
goods, along with boycotting Israeli goods, should Egypt also thumb its nose at
the African Union.
Muslim, Arab and African people are shocked by Egypts stubbornness in respect
to permanently re-opening the Rafah Crossing, and many suspect that this
stubbornness is being driven by a new lucrative industry that has sprung up in
Egypt that is dependant upon illegally confiscated aid and goods intended for
Gaza, along with bribes paid by activists who want to enter the strip for
humanitarian causes, and also bribes paid by journalists.
Egypt has begun to auction off the goods intended for Gaza that it confiscates
from tunnels under the guise of searching for weapons. If the goal is to prevent
the re-arming of Gaza, why is food and equipment confiscated and why cant these
confiscated items be delivered by Egyptian security to the Gazans? Previously
Egypt burned and even allowed donated foods to rot, rather than to allow the
people of Gaza to receive and benefit from the humanitarian aid, illegally
confiscated by Egypt at the borders and also in the makeshift tunnels. This
shows that it is Egypts clear intent to deny the people of Gaza the sustenance
and medical aid required for their survival, and that this denial is based
purely upon the Egyptian, US, PA and Israeli desire to undermine the elected
government, and to overthrow Hamas.
Hopes are high, that since Libyas leader Muammar Qaddhafi, known for his fiery
speeches in support of the Palestinians ongoing struggle, is the present head
of the AU, that the Union will use its power and authority to end the illegal
siege on Gaza by permanently re-opening the Rafah crossing, and possibly
bringing charges of genocide and crimes against humanity against Egypt in its
own criminal court. The AU can also recommend to the International Criminal
Court, that an investigation immediate into Egypts wrong doing get underway,
while giving jurisdiction over the crossing, which is in Africa, to the African
Union.
With winter and the cold weather approaching quickly, it is of the utmost
importance that adequate shelter, clothing, food and medical care be made
immediately available for the people of Gaza. The African Union holds the key to
the Rafah Crossing; lets pray that they will use that key to save the lives of
the people of Gaza.

Capt Doug Beattie, who served two tours in Afghanistan working with the ANP,
said many police officers are in the paid of insurgents and were more loyal to
their tribes than the Afghan government.
British officers say that among low-ranking Afghan police, and particularly
in more rural areas away from central control, there is widespread corruption
and disloyalty.

Parts of the ANP play an active role in helping the Taliban and drug warlords
get opium and heroin onto the international market. The police are poorly paid
and educated, earning about $200 a month, so are vulnerable to corruption.
More worryingly, a number are regular opium users and their addiction makes
their behaviour unpredictable.
There has also been reports of police sexual abuse that has antagonised the
local population.
Capt Beattie, who has retired from the Army, said: "It is absolutely right to
say that the Afghan police are infiltrated by the Taliban at every level, from
the very lowest to the very highest."
The police officer who killed five British soldiers on Tuesday is understood
to have been in the police for at least two years. That raises the possibility
that he was paid to switch sides.
Capt Beattie said that many police officers happily switch sides for money.

He said: Because they're militia they can be bought and paid off at will. If
the government's paying them they're reasonably happy. But if they don't get
enough money they're quite happy to be paid by the insurgency."
Under current planning it is hoped to increase the ANP force from 80,000 to
about 140,000 but there are still worries about the quality of officers and
their vulnerability to corruption.
Peter Galbraith, a former deputy head of the United Nations mission in
Afghanistan, said that recent attempts to speed up police training had raised
the risk of infiltration.
"The process of police training and recruiting has been very rushed. Normally
the police get an eight-week training course. That is actually very short and
there isn't a lot of vetting of police before they are hired.
"And actually, in recent months, they shortened the training programme from
eight weeks to five weeks because they wanted to get more police boots on the
ground in advance of the elections."
The attack is said to bear the hallmarks of the Haqqani network of insurgents
blamed for a number of attacks on Western targets in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Jalaluddin Haqqani, a Pashtun leader based in north Waziristan, Pakistan, has
been labelled as one of the most wanted Taliban by US forces with a $3 million
reward on his head.

Opium, Rape and the American Way

																						 By Chris Hedges

																						 November 03, 2009 "Truthdig" -- The
warlords we champion in Afghanistan are as venal, as opposed to the
rights of women and basic democratic freedoms, and as heavily involved
in opium trafficking as the Taliban. The moral lines we draw between us
and our adversaries are fictional. The uplifting narratives used to
justify the war in Afghanistan are pathetic attempts to redeem acts of
senseless brutality. War cannot be waged to instill any virtue,
including democracy or the liberation of women. War always empowers
those who have a penchant for violence and access to weapons. War turns
the moral order upside down and abolishes all discussions of human
rights. War banishes the just and the decent to the margins of society.
And the weapons of war do not separate the innocent and the damned. An
aerial drone is our version of an improvised explosive device. An iron
fragmentation bomb is our answer to a suicide bomb. A burst from a
belt-fed machine gun causes the same terror and bloodshed among
civilians no matter who pulls the trigger.
We need to tear the mask off of the fundamentalist
warlords who after the tragedy of 9/11 replaced the Taliban, Malalai Joya,
who was expelled from the Afghan parliament two years ago for
denouncing government corruption and the Western occupation, told me
during her visit to New York last week. They used the mask of
democracy to take power. They continue this deception. These warlords
are mentally the same as the Taliban. The only change is physical.
These warlords during the civil war in Afghanistan from 1992 to 1996
killed 65,000 innocent people. They have committed human rights
violations, like the Taliban, against women and many others.
																						 In
eight years less than 2,000 Talib have been killed and more than 8,000
innocent civilians has been killed, she went on. We believe that this
is not war on terror. This is war on innocent civilians. Look at the
massacres carried out by NATO forces in Afghanistan. Look what they did
in May in the Farah province, where more than 150 civilians were
killed, most of them women and children. They used white phosphorus and
cluster bombs. There were 200 civilians on 9th of September killed in
the Kunduz province, again most of them women and children. You can see
the Web site of
professor Marc Herold, this democratic man, to know better the war
crimes in Afghanistan imposed on our people. The United States and NATO
eight years ago occupied my country under the banner of womans rights
and democracy. But they have only pushed us from the frying pan into
the fire. They put into power men who are photocopies of the Taliban.
																						 Afghanistans
boom in the trade in opium, used to produce heroin, over the past eight
years of occupation has funneled hundreds of millions of dollars to the
Taliban, al-Qaida, local warlords, criminal gangs, kidnappers, private
armies, drug traffickers and many of the senior figures in the
government of Hamid Karzai. The New York Times reported that the
brother of President Karzai, Ahmed Wali Karzai,
has been collecting money from the CIA although he is a major player in
the illegal opium business. Afghanistan produces 92 percent of the
worlds opium in a trade that is worth some $65 billion, the United
Nations estimates. This opium feeds some 15 million addicts worldwide
and kills around 100,000 people annually. These fatalities should be
added to the rolls of war dead.
																						 Antonio
Maria Costa, executive director of the United Nations Office on Drugs
and Crime (UNODC), said that the drug trade has permitted the Taliban
to thrive and expand despite the presence of 100,000 NATO troops.
																						 The
Talibans direct involvement in the opium trade allows them to fund a
war machine that is becoming technologically more complex and
increasingly widespread, said Costa.The
UNODC estimates the Taliban earned $90 million to $160 million a year
from taxing the production and smuggling of opium and heroin between
2005 and 2009, as much as double the amount it earned annually while it
was in power nearly a decade ago. And Costa described the
Afghan-Pakistani border as the worlds largest free trade zone in
anything and everything that is illicit, an area blighted by drugs,
weapons and illegal immigration. The perfect storm of drugs and
terrorism may be on the move along drug trafficking routes through
Central Asia, he warned. Profits made from opium are being pumped into
militant groups in Central Asia and a big part of the region could be
engulfed in large-scale terrorism, endangering its massive energy
resources, Costa said.
																						 Afghanistan,
after eight years of occupation, has become a world center for drugs,
Joya told me. The drug lords are the only ones with power. How can you
expect these people to stop the planting of opium and halt the drug
trade? How is it that the Taliban when they were in power destroyed the
opium production and a superpower not only cannot destroy the opium
production but allows it to increase? And while all this goes on, those
who support the war talk to you about womens rights. We do not have
human rights now in most provinces. It is as easy to kill a woman in my
country as it is to kill a bird. In some big cities like Kabul, some
women have access to jobs and education, but in most of the country the
situation for women is hell. Rape, kidnapping and domestic violence are
increasing. These fundamentalists during the so-called free elections
made a misogynist law against Shia women in Afghanistan. This law has
even been signed by Hamid Karzai. All these crimes are happening under
the name of democracy.
																						 Thousands
of Afghan civilians have died from insurgent and foreign military
violence. And American and NATO forces are responsible for almost half
the civilian deaths in Afghanistan. Tens of thousands of Afghan
civilians have also died from displacement, starvation, disease,
exposure, lack of medical treatment, crime and lawlessness resulting
from the war.
																						 Joya
argues that Karzai and his rival Abdullah Abdullah, who has withdrawn
from the Nov. 7 runoff election, will do nothing to halt the
transformation of Afghanistan into a narco-state. She said that NATO,
by choosing sides in a battle between two corrupt and brutal opponents,
has lost all its legitimacy in the country.
The recent resignation of a high-level U.S. diplomat in
Afghanistan, Matthew Hoh,
was in part tied to the drug problem. Hoh wrote in his resignation
letter that Karzis government is filled with glaring corruption and
unabashed graft. Karzi, he wrote, is a president whose confidants and
chief advisers comprise drug lords and war crimes villains who mock our
own rule of law and counter-narcotics effort.
																						 Joya
said, Where do you think the $36 billion of money poured into country
by the international community have gone? This money went into the
pockets of the drug lords and the warlords. There are 18 million people
in Afghanistan who live on less than $2 a day while these warlords get
rich. The Taliban and warlords together contribute to this fascism
while the occupation forces are bombing and killing innocent civilians.
When we do not have security how can we even talk about human rights or
womens rights?
																						 This
election under the shade of Afghan war-lordism, drug-lordism,
corruption and occupation forces has no legitimacy at all, she said.
The result will be like the same donkey but with new saddles. It is
not important who is voting. It is important who is counting. And this
is our problem. Many of those who go with the Taliban do not support
the Taliban, but they are fed up with these warlords and this
injustice, and they go with the Taliban to take revenge. I do not agree
with them, but I understand them. Most of my people are against the
Taliban and the warlords, which is why millions did not take part in
this tragic drama of an election. The
U.S. wastes taxpayers money and the blood of their soldiers by
supporting such a mafia corrupt system of Hamid Karzai, said Joya, who
changes houses in Kabul frequently because of the numerous death
threats made against her. Eight years is long enough to learn about
Karzai and Abdullah. They chained my country to the center of drugs. If
Obama was really honest he would support the democratic-minded people
of my country. We have a lot [of those people]. But he does not support
the democratic-minded people of my country. He is going to start war in
Pakistan by attacking in the border area of Pakistan. More civilians
have been killed in the Obama period than even during the criminal
Bush.
																						 My
people are sandwiched between two powerful enemies, she lamented. The
occupation forces from the sky bomb and kill innocent civilians. On the
ground, Taliban and these warlords deliver fascism. As NATO kills more
civilians, the resistance to the foreign troops increases. If the U.S.
government and NATO do not leave voluntarily, my people will give to
them the same lesson they gave to Russia and to the English who three
times tried to occupy Afghanistan. It is easier for us to fight against
one enemy rather than two.

Hedges, whose column is published on Truthdig every Monday, spent two
decades as a foreign reporter covering wars in Latin America, Africa,
Europe and the Middle East. He has written nine books, including
Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle
(2009) and War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning (2003).
