The Ish Group of Virginia is a community dedicated to the principles of sustainable living and tribalism as introduced through the books of Daniel Quinn. Ish is short for Ishmael, the gorilla protagonist in the first novel by the same name. Ishmael asked that people who believe in the message of living beyond civilization tell 100 people and then they tell 100 people, so the message will always spread.

One of the purposes of the Ish Group of VA since its birth is to live beyond civilization (although I must confess, we are getting pretty sick of putting it that way). Again, Beyond Civilization is a book by Quinn, which continues the ideas introduced in Ishmael. So, let's just say we are moving beyond the confines of the human prison into a world of our own choosing. This is a world where we will live in harmony with the world and not at war with it.

One of the results of this movement was the creation of the Lenus Organization, a nonprofit development corporation.
