portforward.com, and IRLP has special settings listed there at the

Then click on "Common Ports" and choose IRLP, then choose your router. It
will help you with port forwarding.

Also, enlisting the help of another ham to help you locally has worked for
others in the past as well. That allows them to help you locally, which is
a lot easier than over email.

All you need to do is setup the IRLP ports in your router, and your node
will work. They are all preconfigured before they are shipped.

Hi again David: I now have the IRLP up in the idle mode on line. I can not get into the remote admin by using the suggested script http://stn4644.ip.irlp.net/remote/. I can get into the index page using 192.168.1.10 which my router gave me after running the set up last night.but there is a message when you click control asking for a login and password. The set up sheet says this will be remote/remote after you login with root password. No combination of passwords will let me have access. I have used root and my password to root, remote / remote, no login and my root password,  no login and remote, admin/ admin , on login and admin for password and any other combo i could think of. My IRLP computer is setting in the root mode. I will run IRLP_VPN when I get this thing up and going. Let me know of cost will help support the net. Thanks again A.J, and 73s

Don't worry. Some of it will soak in my osmosis and you will pick up whatever
you need to know along the way.

> (1.) setting the port to 15426 using the command ssh -15426 IP_address
> I get Temporary failure in name resolution. Do not have pUTTY on my

Like Dave pointed out, if you are already logged in on the console, you don't
need to use SSH to connect to it. If you will always have a keyboard and
monitor connected to your node, you could continue to do whatever you need to
do right from the console. However, if you want to be able to fiddle with it
from a Windows machine, go ahead and download puTTy and install it. You can
grab puTTy from www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/. Don't forget to
tell it to use port 15426 instead of port 22 when you try and log in.

FYI, from your Windows machine (if it's on the same network as your node) you
can log in on the remote admin page at http://192.168.1.148/control.

> Trying the second command (/etc/ssh/sshd_config) I get Permission

I don't think you run sshd_config. However, if logged in as root, you could
edit it with "pico -w /etc/ssh/sshd_config" but it shouldn't be necessary as
it should have come pre-configured with it set to use SSH on port 15426. A
safer way to look at it would be "cat /etc/ssh/sshd_config" which would just
display the contents on the screen if you can scroll back and see what
disappeared off the screen... or "cat /etc/ssh/sshd_config | more" which will
wait for you to hit a key before it continues with another screen of text. You
should see the SSH port number on the first screen of text.

Had you fiddled with the BIOS? I presume you didn't get that error message
when you first fired it up. Any comment from others?

Sounds like a port forwarding issue. As well as the other ports that need to
be forwarded if you are behind a router, you need to get port 15426 forwarded
to your node. Your IP address may have been 172.16.1.10 at some point in time,
but the last time your node had an Internet connection, it was on
75.23.214.50. The 192.168.1.10 could be or could have been the IP address
assigned by your router to the local connection to your node. However, you
should assign a fixed IP to it so you don't have to deal with the local IP
potentially changing every time you boot the node up. I believe the IP is
stored in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf but you could run "/root/set-static-ip" to
determine if it's a static IP or not. Hmmm... I seem to recall running into a
snag running set-static-ip and then using a different script, but I couldn't
find it when I took a look.

Like Dave said... "All you need to do is setup the IRLP ports in your router,
and your node will work..." assuming something hasn't happened to your
parallel port.

You could look at your router to see what dynamic IP addresses have been
handed out... usually (not always) at http://192.168.1.1 in a browser on a
machine on the same network. However, if you run the node on a fixed IP, you
won't have a problem with the router forwarding ports to the wrong IP address
then.

Why did it take several tries to get the rootirlp to take? It sounds like you
are having a keyboard problem.

If you set your root password to something else, nobody can recover it for you.
I suspect you have an intermittent keyboard.

Can you test the keyboard on another machine? Type your password and see if you
get the same outcome. Passwords are also case sensitive.

It's the one that was pre-installed on the embedded node. The configuration
file "id_now" is...

/home/irlp/features/morse_id/id_now

and looking at that script, it runs /home/irlp/bin/cwpcm I did adjust some of
the configuration settings in id_now in the past to change the speed and tone
frequency. Perhaps I'll "un-modify" the failure file and go back to the
default settings for speed and frequency in id_now to see if a typo crept in
there, but I can't see one. The changes I did slowed it down and lowered the
tone from 1000 to 800 Hz. The command id_now causes it to ID, and the node
identifies properly when a call is made and when terminated. It was after some
kind of failure (e.g. calling a node that wasn't responding) that I noticed
that it wasn't identifying.

Here are the entire contents of id_now

#!/bin/bash

[ -z "$SCRIPT" ] && SCRIPT=/home/irlp/scripts
source $SCRIPT/common-functions.sh

# Arguments for cwpcm
#
# -ss slow rate
# -sm medium rate
# -sf fast rate
# -sx extra fast rate
#
# -l <0-100> sets level
# -p <0-3000> sets frequency of cw tone
# was...
# echo $CALLSIGN | cwpcm -sx -l 10 -p 1000 > /dev/dsp
# changed from extra fast to fast, set level at ten, changed tone to 800 Hz

$BIN/aux1on
usleep 500000
echo $CALLSIGN | cwpcm -sf -l 6 -p 800 > /dev/dsp
usleep 250000
$BIN/aux1off

Any other embedded users that would like to comment on whether or not their
node IDs after a failure... e.g. try calling non-existent node 1001, or 4644
that the owner is trying to get going? 4644 still wasn't responding the last
time I checked, but that could change.

Thanks anyway. It can wait until Dave gets back from Dayton. In the meantime,
perhaps one of the other embedded node owners could e.g. try dialing 1001 and
let me know if their node IDs after playing the error message. My "kludge"
worked, but perhaps it shouldn't be necessary. Again, it is only when
"failure" plays an error message that it doesn't ID. Oh yes... and when I
command it to run the "speaktime" script. I took care of that for now by
sticking an "id_now" in the custom decode script.

Subject: IRLP - Echolink - APRS - Shipplotter all from the same embedded controller

Greetings,

I visited the IRLP booth at the Dayton convention today and met Dave
and ordered an embedded controller.

I'm interested in having my controller perform four different gateway
tasks, IRLP, Echolink, act as an APRS gateway on 144.39 MHz and also
act as a gateway for maritime AIS data on 161.975 MHz and 162.025 MHz
to the shipplotter server.

I expect that I will need to connect a serial port on the controller
to something like a kantronics kpc3+ and another receiver (separate
from the IRLP node receiver) for the APRS reception and then connect
a second serial port on the controller to yet another receiver for
the maritime AIS data reception.

For the AIS data I'm planning to use the SR-161 Marine AIS receiver
which puts out NMEA183 text sentences over RS232.

http://www.milltechmarine.com/SR161.htm

The server where I want to upload the ship AIS data is managed by the
guy who created the shipplotter software shown here:

http://www.coaa.co.uk/shipplotter.htm

I have a background in Intel assembler code, FORTRAN, basic and a
tiny bit of C++ but no experience yet with Linux so I expect that I
will be learning a lot of new software and operating system details
in the coming months.

Let me know if any of you are interested in this idea?

There is no way an update can change a password.

try typing your password into the node as the username (instead of root)
and make sure that the keyboard is working right.

Passwords are case sensitive.

If you need me to, I may be able to remotely login and change your
password back. I will need your node number, and port 15426 will need to
be forwarded through your router.

Hope this helps.

how many of you out there that has a embedded node would be interested
in starting a embedded node owners net on one of the reflectors?
the net could be used to ask and answer different questions and just
get aquainewd with each other.

I thought that was what this Reflector was (for IRLP-Embedded). I may
be confused and you are refering to an IRLP voice Reflector and not this
Yahoo Internet Refletor. Was a voice Reflector what you meant?

Hello All,
I am new to the group, and am considering getting into this IRLP stuff
here in south central PA USA (FN10).
Reading docs etc and still looking for square one.

Yes, he's referring to doing a net on one of the IRLP Voice Reflectors.

I'm not trying to start a flame; what is wrong with the current
reflector (irlp-embedded)?

You mean *other* than the fact that this is a mailing list and not a Net?

I can see lots of reasons why it might be easier to talk about problems as
opposed to emailing back and forth.

I'd be interested in joining but I am only home on weekends for the next
several months...

Subject: Node Listing Problem on WWW.IRLP.NET

My node (3600) is working very well. Howevr, when I go to www.irlp.net
and click on "List of nodes and frequencies", I can scroll down and
find my node listed. But, if I select "Connected Nodes and Reflector
Status", the node has never shown up in that listing. Also, when I go
to Google Earth to check the node location, the node is not in that
list. I'm sure thee's a simple solution, but after going through the
manual and FAQs, I can't find a way to rsolve the problem. Any
suggestions from our more experienced embedded-IRLP node owners?
