I have appeared twice on the DBN results table. I think the fada in my surname
has proved too much for the database.

Can that be rectified? Otherwise I have to decide whom I will run as on
Saturday night...

Thanks,

Sarah Ní Ruairc

All,

For our second Downhill run we are doing things a little different. We
will not have pre entry. We will also have other courses available, a
beginners and a 'short and tricky' course. They are both about 2.5km.

If you are involved in any scout, school or other group please invite
them along for the beginners course.

The mass start for the downhill run will be about 12:00 from the top of
Trooperstown, with assembly in the car park at 11:00. The car parking
will be at the entrance off the Annamoe to Laragh road.

More details are on gen.orienteering.ie

Entry forms are at

I have posted some photos from tonight's Night-O in Belfield at

I have also had several requests for information about head torches so I have
added a Night-O section to the orienteering gear page

Enjoy,

A head torch and jacket were left at registration at the Belfield Night-O
earlier this evening.

I will have them in Castletown tomorrow if the owner wants them back.

The next leg of the "Dublin by Night" series takes place on Saturday 6th on UCD
Campus, Belfield.

Plan is to have the start in the same area as last year, so as before:

Here's a link that may make things easier:
http://www.ucd.ie/euiteniba/pdf/UCD_Campus_Map.JPG

Parking will be in the student centre car park (between buildings
16 & 17, grid ref 5D on the map) at the rear of the college. Access is best
through the Clonskeagh entrance after which turn left at the roundabout, then
two rights. Those coming through the N11 entrance need go left and clockwise
around the college until eventually reaching the roundabout after the sports
centre and turning right.

The Long is 4.5k with 24 controls and the short is 3.5k with 13 controls. SI
timing WILL be used and descriptions on the map and loose. Start times from
6.15ish to 7.30 sharp.

As previously, the student bar is adjacent for a few pints and food served at 8
- so the earlier you start the better chance you'll be back in time!

Hello Everyone,

This Sunday's event in Leinster is local event in the grounds of Castletown
House, organised by Fingal Orienteers.

There will be three courses on offer: Long, Medium and Short.

Starts from 11am and courses close at 3pm. We will start to take in controls
promptly at 3pm.

Prices are €8 for adults, €4 for students/juniors/OAPs/unwaged and €20 for
families. There will be free entry for OPW staff and their families on
production of a valid OPW staff ID card.

We intend to go very low-tech and use punch cards. The last time we held an
event in Castletown one of the controls was stolen so we don't want to risk
using SI.

Parking will be in the same location as before, i.e. the car park behind the
house itself. Access will be via the roundabout at the M4. There will be
pedestrian access only from Celbridge village. The event will be sign-posted
from the M4 (exit 2a signposted Leixlip (West) and Celbridge (West)). Anyone
getting public transport can get a 67 or 67a bus to the pedestrian gate in
Celbridge village itself.

The coffee shop in the house will not be open.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

I want to organise an Irish team for this years10mila race, a Swedish night
relay of ten men, taking place this year on May 1st/2nd. So far i have three
people on this team including myself. Are you interested?!?!

You don't have to be running brown courses to be a part of this Irish team.
The aim of this team is to be all Irish, competant green course orienteers,
and looking for a fun experience at one of the best orienteering events in
the world. About 7 of our legs will be at night and the last few will be in
daylight, so there will be an opportunity for day orienteering for a few
people. The race is very close to Stockholm and Ryanair Skavsta airport is
60km away from the event. http://tinyurl.com/10milalocation

The cost per person would be about 30euro per person if paid before February
28th after which the price almost doubles.
Invitation: www.tinyurl.com/10milainvitation
The mapping/mapper information: www.tinyurl.com/10milamaps

If i'm inundated with people who want to be a part of this team i'll
organise additional teams. And if any people want to have a womens or junior
team i'll organise that also. Womens/juniors races are held during the
daytime on May1st. The mens race starts at 11pm on May 1st and the winners
finish around about 7am on May 2nd. So get your skates on and email me at
davidbreadmaker@...!

It'll be alot of fun!

Rowan McMahon seems to be the main guy behind them. Same crowd who did the
Mourne way marathon and the Causeway coast marathon. The two marathons were
very well organised anyway.

Even less - they say you don't have to carry your tent and sleeping bag and
overnight food.

Seems interesting....

It would probably be won in a fast time due to not having to carry much kit.
I reckon you could keep pack weight to sub 4kg. Probably less.

Please find attached a flyer for a new mountain marathon in Ireland – The
Achill Mountain Marathon.

Taking place over the weekend of 1st / 2nd of May 2010 this event will
follow a traditional mountain marathon format in which participants (solo or
teams of two) navigate their way around a two-day course on Achill Island,
albeit with a few twists. The midway camp will be in the same location as
the start location therefore removing the need to carry your tent, sleeping
bag and food each day. You will however be required to carry mandatory kit
each day and will be disqualified for failing to do so. At the overnight
camp on the Saturday night we will have a marquee with hot food for all
participants and traditional music.

For more information on this event and details on how enter please log onto
www.achillmountainmarathon.com

It would be great if you could pass this email onto to anyone in your club
or anyone else you know who may be interested in the event.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us.

Leinster Orienteers are half way through an unusual sequence of four
NightO/DayO pairs, running a Dublin-By-Night event on Saturday evenings
quickly followed by a local event the next Sunday morning.

Just for fun I have created a league using our standard scoring system of
the long course from all eight events. The league is called "through
darkness into the light" with your best five of eight to count - that is,
you will have to complete at least one event of each type to be included in
the final table.

This league is open to anyone who runs the long course, including
sportident-card-renting club members. It is scale invariant and it is not
intended to replace the Irish Championships.

through darkness into the light: http://tinyurl.com/tditl

Ruairi Short of CNOC is annihilating the field. His clubmate Ruth Lynam is
best female and also best female veteran. Rising star Eoin McCullough of
3ROC is best junior and yours truly is best male veteran.

This is a once-off league because of an unusual scheduling coincidence and I
don't mean to steal thunder from the excellent Dublin-By-night series which
is full swing at the moment (see http://dbn.orienteering.ie/2010/).

The Irish Schools Orienteering Group (IOSG) has been up and running since the
IOA Annual General Meeting when the concept was officially ratified.
The main form of communication is by email to interested parties and the Blog.
www.irishschoolso.blogspot.com

Fixtures, results and useful links are posted.

This is now the most active time of the year for schools orienteering.
Mary Healy is running a series of events in Leinster for both Primary and
Secondary schools.
There is a Cork schools event due this Wednesday and Waterford Orienteers host
both Primary and Secondary schools events within the next month.

The Leinster and Munster Schools competitions take part on the 24th and 25th
March.
The final event of the year will be the Irish Schools Competition hosted this
year by Cork Schools and
CorkO at Glengarra woods, between Mitchelstown and Cahir on April 15th.

I hope that all club members will encourage their own children to take part and
lend a hand in running the actual events where possible. I would be grateful for
any reports or pictures from events from parents, organisers and particularly
the pupils themselves to publish on the blog.
Thank you for your support.

Until the next message,

A big thanks to Eoin Dunne, 3roc.( if my information is correct) Who found and
returned to the regristration area my son Ben and his pal Setanta, who managed
to give three adults the slip out on the short course. Both boys were under
instructions to wait at each junction, but it appears their sense of adventure
overcame them and they just couldn't wait.
Once again thanks.

P.s
It appears that David Healy managed to pip Christian Foley Fisher by a slim
margin in the "head to head" shoot out on the string course. David apparently
won it in 26.2sec.

Marcus,

One of the suggestions which you summarised in your message was "only
sell cards, don't rent them", which would imply forcing everyone to buy
one. So far Ed seems to be the sole supporter of that!

Is it that big an issue though? Thanks to Martin and Or, entering
competitors is simple and quick and with a 2hr window to do it, there
are rarely bottlenecks. An even further improvement might be an
AutoSuggest feature when you're typing the name in, but even so thats
only a minor saving.

Stuart.

Val, Kevin and Fiach all refer to a suggestion that we stop renting cards at
orienteering events. Val also refers to a suggestion that people be "forced to
buy SI cards". Could you please show me in which eGroup messages these
suggestions were made? I certainly didn't make them and as far as I can tell
nobody else did either.

Val says that "I can't agree with most of your other options" - if you read my
message again you will see that I was simply listing the options that had been
suggested by other people. I fully support the obvious one that we should sell
SI cards at events, and, like Val, I simply don't understand how some of the
others are relevant to the topic I raised.

I am not going to paraphrase myself and restate what I see as the problem and
what I think the solution is. Instead I would be grateful if you could re-read
these two eGroup messages, I feel that I was reasonably clear in what I said.
