CASMII Press Release
20 February 2010

An appeal to anti-war organizations & activists to oppose the increasing threats against Iran

Around the world, anti-war activists are preparing for major protests this spring to oppose the continuing U.S.-led occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. Meanwhile, a storm of developments is dramatically increasing tensions between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. In response, the Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran (CASMII) is issuing this appeal to the anti-war movements in the United States, United Kingdom and other countries to raise the demands of “No war, no sanctions, no internal interference in Iran!”

Iran is a country that hasn’t attacked a neighbor in more than 200 years. Even when Saddam Hussein invaded Iran after the 1979 Revolution and, with support from the West, used chemical weapons against both civilians and combatants, the Islamic Republic did not retaliate in kind. And yet the U.S. government claims that Iran represents a serious threat to the Middle East region and the entire world. Without a shred of evidence, the U.S. charges that Iran's program to develop nuclear power for peaceful energy purposes is just a cover to develop nuclear weapons. Never mentioned is the fact that, as a signatory to the U.N.'s Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran's right to develop nuclear energy is enshrined in international law. Just a few months ago, the U.N's International Atomic Energy Chief, Mohammed ElBardai, the person responsible for monitoring compliance with that treaty, stated that “Nobody is sitting in Iran today developing nuclear weapons. Tehran doesn’t have an ongoing nuclear weapons program. But somehow, everyone in the West is talking about how Iran’s nuclear program is the greatest threat to the world.” (Interview with the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Sept. 2009) Instead, warning of world disaster if Iran should succeed in its imaginary goal of obtaining nuclear arms, Washington argues that Iran must be forcefully brought to its knees, through a combination of increasingly crippling sanctions, taking advantage of Iran's internal divisions and preparing for a possible military attack.

Consider these recent developments:

• The U.S has been pressuring the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council to impose a fourth and more severe round of sanctions against Iran. The only real holdout has been the People's Republic of China, which in January held the council's revolving presidency. On Feb. 1, however, the president's seat passed to France, which is nearly as hostile to Iran's nuclear program as is the U.S. (France itself, by the way, relies on nuclear power for 80 percent of its own energy needs.) The Security Council’s permanent members, including China and Russia, have never been a real barrier for the US. Not only has the council already approved three rounds of sanctions against Iran, but the Obama Administration is now talking of “bypassing” the U.N. in its latest push for sanctions. While sanctions are often promoted as an alternative to war, the world now knows that the sanctions imposed by the U.N. against Iraq during the first Persian Gulf War resulted in the deaths of up to 1.5 million Iraqis, a third of them children.

• Not content with just pressuring the U.N., the U.S. is pushing ahead with plans for more of its own unilateral sanctions. Congress is getting close to passing the Dodd-Shelby Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act. Among other provisions, this bipartisan bill would “impose new sanctions on entities involved in exporting certain refined petroleum products to Iran or building Iran’s domestic refining capacity.” This provision starkly exposes the real U.S. goal: to economically cripple Iran in an attempt to so complicate life for the Iranian people that they might demand a “regime change.” In the past, the U.S. has argued that Iran doesn’t need to develop nuclear power because of its vast oil reserves, while conveniently omitting the fact that Iran doesn't have sufficient refinery capacity to meet its energy needs through oil alone. Targeting companies and countries that sell refined petroleum products to Iran, or that help Iran expand its own refining capacity, shows that the real goal has nothing to do with countering nuclear proliferation. (The U.S. even pressures European countries not to provide Iran with the means to develop wind energy!) Those who desire hegemony over the oil-rich Middle East can tolerate no independent regional powers, whether or not they present a threat to any other country. This reality was dramatically demonstrated in 1953, when the CIA toppled Iran’s democratically elected prime minister, Dr. Mohammad Mosaddegh, for the “crime” of nationalizing Iran’s oil industry.

• Meanwhile, these threats of new sanctions are being accompanied by a military build-up in the Persian Gulf region. On Jan. 31, The Wall Street Journal reported that, in recent months, the U.S. and its Persian Gulf allies have stepped up their military defenses “in response to Iranian missile tests and Tehran's continued defiance of international efforts to curtail its nuclear program.” The moves have included “upgrades, new purchases of American-made Patriot antimissile batteries and the addition of advanced air- and missile-defense radars .…” The Journal reported that, although “some of the buildup has been going on for years ... the heightened profile of the moves comes as the Obama administration has toughened its rhetoric against Tehran.”

• And, according to a Feb. 1 Reuters report, “The United States has expanded land- and sea-based missile defense systems in and around the Gulf to counter what it sees as Iran's growing missile threat .... The deployments include expanded land-based Patriot defensive missile installations in Kuwait, Qatar, UAE and Bahrain, as well as Navy ships with missile defense systems in and around the Mediterranean, officials said. … The chairman of the U.S. military's Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, said last month the Pentagon must have military options ready to counter Iran should Obama call for them.”

• Finally, Iran's ongoing internal political crisis has apparently led some Western anti-war organizations and activists to be ambivalent about the need to stand against Western aggression against Iran. Regardless of how activists view Iran's internal situation, we all must agree that outside pressure and interference must be opposed. Recognizing this, Iran’s political opposition has urged Western countries to stay out of Iran's internal affairs. As presidential opposition candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, has put it, “We are opposed to any types of sanctions against our nation. This is what living the Green Path means.” (Statement No. 13, Sept. 28, 2009) No truly progressive democracy activist in a country targeted by the U.S. would appeal to the U.S. for support.

The political positions taken by anti-war activists in the West can become a real factor in strategic decisions made by the U.S. government and its allies. Because of this, we are heartened to see that in the United States the National Assembly to End the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars and Occupations and the ANSWER Coalition have added the demand of “No War or Sanctions Against Iran!” to their fliers promoting national anti-war protests on March 20. We call on all other coalitions, organizations and individual activists to do the same, and to further demand “No Outside Interference in Iran's Internal Affairs! Self-determination for the Iranian People!”

Regardless of differences in our political analyses and views, these demands should be acceptable to all who struggle for peace, justice and a better world for all.

“War Made Easy: How Presidents & Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death”
Film Showing

Wednesday, March 3, 2010
7:00 p.m.

Monroe Co. Public Library Auditorium
303 E. Kirkwood Avenue
Bloomington, Indiana

The Real War film series presents a free wide-screen showing of “WAR MADE EASY

Narrated by actor and activist Sean Penn, “War Made Easy” exposes the 50-year pattern of government deception and media spin that has dragged the United States into one war after another, from Vietnam to Iraq. Using archival footage from L.B.J. to George W. Bush, the film reveals how the American news media uncritically disseminates the pro-war messages of successive presidential administrations.

Released in 2007, “War Made Easy” pays special attention to parallels between the Vietnam and Iraq wars. Guided by media critic Norman Solomon's meticulous research and tough-minded analysis, the film presents examples of propaganda and media complicity from the present alongside rare footage of political leaders and well-known journalists from the past.

Following the film showing, there will be time for a brief discussion.

The Real War film series is sponsored by Bloomington Peace Action Coalition.

Earth House
237 N. East Street
Indianapolis, Indiana

All are welcome. Limited space available. TO RSVP, please email epolley@...

Nonviolent direct action is a key component of any movement for social change. This workshop begins with a discussion of the successful efforts to desegregate Nashville’s lunch counters in 1961. We will look at the strategy that was developed, the tactics that were used, and the manners in which the message was crafted.

Following this examination of a successful campaign of nonviolent direct action that utilized multiple levels of nonviolence, this workshop will examine the building blocks of preparing to engage in nonviolent direct action today. We’ll discuss the role of affinity groups in planning and carrying out nonviolent action. The workshop will conclude with role play exercises.

Jeff Leys, Co-Coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence, will facilitate this workshop. His engagement in nonviolent direct action / civil disobedience dates back to 1980 when President Carter reinstated registration for the draft. From 1984 through 2004, he participated in multiple acts of civil disobedience at the Navy’s Project ELF in northern Wisconsin, serving a two year prison sentence after engaging in a Plowshares – Disarmament action in 1985 at the age of 21. His background includes working on issues of homelessness and union organizing. He journeyed to Iraq on two occasions in 2003, first with Voices in the Wilderness immediately prior to the U.S. invasion and then later that year with Christian Peacemaker Teams. He has worked as Co-Coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence since 2004.

Just got this announcement in my inbox and thought some folks might be
interested.
Erin

Dear Christian Peacemaker,

Eight years ago the World Council of Churches declared a 'Decade to Overcome
Violence.' Its goal has been to intensify local and global engagement in
overcoming oppression and building peace in order to overcome the spirit, logic,
and practice of violence. In 2011 there will be a worldwide gathering named the
International Ecumenical Peace Convocation in Kingston, Jamaica to confirm and
deepen the convictions and actions that have grown over the past decade.

From July 28 - 31, 2010, Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart,
Indiana will host an ecumenical conference, entitled, "Peace Among the Peoples:
overcoming the spirit, logic and practice of violence." This gathering of
ecumenically minded Christian peacemakers is a direct response to the challenge
of the Decade. Peace Among the Peoples will be an opportunity to contribute to
the 2011 Convocation as well as to discuss North American perspectives on
Christian participation in war.

The meeting will include daily panel presentations from leading thinkers and
activists, such as Stanley Hauerwas, Rita Nakashima Brock, Vincent Harding and
Brian McLaren. Each day will carry a theme: Thursday - Theological,
Ecclesiological and Ethical Foundations for Peace; Friday - Wrestling with
Faithfulness in Peacemaking; and Saturday - Our Future Work Together. Morning
prayer and evening worship will frame the beginning and the ending of each day.

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage panelists as well as to
participate in a group process that will assess Christian peacemaking in North
America and envision a new way forward for ecumenical dialogue and action for
peace. Today, there is a broad spectrum of Christian peacemaking activities in
North America. A major task before us at the end of the Decade, therefore, is to
strengthen the commitment of Christian peacemakers and our churches to future
conversation and common witness for peace.

We welcome you to participate in this exciting event! It is our belief that by
bringing your commitment to peacemaking and your experience in this work, you
will make Peace Among the Peoples a milestone event in ecumenical peace efforts.
We are hoping that you will help us make the most out of this conference by
adding your voice to it. If you are aware of others who have a stake in this
agenda and might consider attending the event, please feel free to forward this
information to them.

The attached brochure includes information about registration and the conference
website. If you would like to attend this event, we invite you to fill out the
registration form in the brochure and send it to the address provided or visit
the conference website and fill out the electronic form. Limited scholarship aid
is available, and it will be designated for participants with low financial
means. Please indicate if you are in need of an event scholarship.

Sincerely yours,

John Rempel

Dear "Comrades:"

I am presuming that the reason you got this email is because you are one of the many progressives
around town. Normally, I "hide" addresses but, this time, I'm asking that you all come out of the closet.
Well, not exactly; you have been "outed" because others receiving this email know now that you
may be a "progressive," "liberal," or as some refer to us, (especially when we speak out for healthcare
for all, or women's rights, or glbt rights, or stopping the wars, or for the poor, or any other "radical"
cause,) "socialists."  But the main reason your address is shown is because I am truly interested
in your thoughts on what follows, and I hope, should you choose to reply, that you "reply all,"
so others can read what you think, not just me. (If you're not a Progressive, I don't know why you're on
my list any more than you do. Just send me an email and your name and address goes "poof,"  at
least from my list.)

I realize, to some, I have been a royal (or not so royal) PITA. Sorry about that. But I think most of you
may feel as I do, that it's high time that Progressives start fighting back, at the risk of being called the
names above. Now, enough of an introduction. Here's the real reason you're getting this email:

There is an astonishing lack of anger among liberals, progressives and radicals who have abandoned
emotion to the right.
Where's the Sane, Liberal Anger? Have Progressives Abandoned Emotion to the Right?
While Tea Partiers protest loudly at the mess we're in progressives seem to be stewing in their own sterile
politeness. Please read the

let me know what you think. Or aren't you pissed off enough? (yet)

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the email and the Sigle article. Yes, I'm a progressive
around town, but these days the town is Philly.

#1, keep on being a PITA. That's what we need right now.

#2, don't expect the tide to turn overnight. Conservatives spent a lot
of time & money getting ready for the post-election counteroffensive,
and seem to have caught liberals/progressives off guard. We can turn
things around, but it's going to take more than getting mad, although
we should get mad.

#3, you are not alone. Read the recent editions of NATION magazine,

Mary,

Well, we did fail to get single payer - so in that sense we were ineffective.

I just went back and reread your email: "Dave, we have failed to effectively make our case even though it is supported by logic and facts. I believe we can only be outraged that we, ourselves, did what I can only compare to the equivelent of a circle jerk while we let the opportunity slip away."

I disagree that we did not effectively make our case.  Our case was effectively made - we were just unable to beat the system - and that is a huge obstacle to overcome.  Saying that we let the opportunity slip away makes it sound like we were inactive and just watched the opportunity float on by, which certainly isn't the case.   We are all on the same side, so I definitely don't mean to pick a fight here!  But what I take offense at is the idea that we were not active and did not take action to the best of our ability.  Failure to achieve our goal on this end run doesn't mean that we didn't do what we could given the situation.  I find your statement discouraging and it leads more to want to give up than fight on.  Also, through all this, our movement has grown - and that is not failure.  It just means its a longer fight than we would have liked it to have been.  Sometimes justice takes far longer than we like.

In hindsight, maybe we could have done things better.  I'm not sure on that, but there definitely is that possibility.  But hindsight is hindsight - and we didn't have that going into the situation.

Subject: RE: To my fellow progressives: Where is our Anger?

I, too, am glad that Dave initiated this “unifiying challengeâ€â€”as Todd called it. And Edith’s suggestion to organize a  local conference to bring this “unifying†to fruition is really a good idea.

To begin with, that article kind of pissed me off………

I think there is plenty of anger (and frustration) among us progressive/liberal folks, and I am certainly plenty pissed off at the current “state of affairs†in our country.  After reading the article from AlterNet (“Where’s the Sane, Liberal Anger?â€) I had to wonder if the author does not *see* this anger and frustration because it doesn’t get the media coverage in comparison to the anger the Tea Party people express.  In our media obsessed culture, we’ve come to believe that unless our actions make the newspaper or the 5 o’clock news, we’re not making an impact or our actions are not important enough, or loud enough.  And on top of that, when we do “make noise†whether we want media attention or not, we are ignored by the politicians (as evidenced by the total disregard of the single payer proposals at the beginning of the so-called health care “debate†last year.)

Many of us progressives channel our anger and frustration into taking personal action within our own circles of influence. (You know, “Live the change you want to seeâ€) And that includes following our beliefs about social justice and living in peace.  I was moved by Larry’s poetic response to this mailer:

“Where can I go with my anger when I seek peace and harmony with my fellow man, with the wolf and the wild cat, the humming bird and the badger? Anger eats at the soul and heart like a ravenous fire eats at a forest banquette of pine and oak.â€

Where do we go with our anger?  I’ve been angry about a lot of things lately. I’m angry about the high cost of health care and the health care industry. I’m angry about the tax cuts in education in Indiana and the looming prospect of school closures and teacher layoffs.  I’m angry with the banking and credit card industry.  I’m angry with corporate America and outrageous CEO salaries.  I’m angry over our economic system that leaves millions of intelligent people unemployed or underemployed and reliant on food stamps. The list goes on.  And I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way.  My impression is that the “revolution†we are wanting and waiting for will not be forced by lots of loud temper tantrums and noise, like the angry “Tea Partiers, Palinites,†etc. are engaging in. The media would have us believe this of course, but these groups seem rather Potemkin village-ish to me—all show and no go.  What positive actions have they engaged in?  They are anti-everything, it seems. No.  The revolution is coming from people who may be motivated by anger initially but who channel it into things like this new movement: http://coffeepartyusa.com/   And who write books like this one: “The Spirit Level†(“Why greater equality makes societies strongerâ€) by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett. (new at the ACPL this week!)  And by people like us who will decide to start an employee owned business or a cooperative—like this one:  http://cheeseboardcollective.coop/History/CheesePizzaHistory.html  And it will come from people who, one by one, move their money from the huge, nationally owned banks to local credit unions—or start a new micro-lending system locally-- and maybe collectively decide to stop using credit cards—why do we keep playing the game when the rules keep changing on us? (Who created this crazy credit game anyway? You have to keep up a good credit score in order to continue to get “good credit†or you can just plain quit the game!)  Maybe it all just boils down to “what are you most angry about and what are you gonna do about it?â€
So, again, I think it’s a great idea to form a larger “coalition†of all of our local activist organizations—from labor and health care to peace and gay rights—all working together to stay energized, motivated and focused.  I’ll volunteer to help too!
~ Michelle

I Am Angry
By John Cory, Reader Supported News
06 March 2010

I am angry.

I'm tired of pundits and know-nothing media gasbags. I'm tired of
snarky "inside politics" programming. I am sick of the bigotry and
hatred of [by] "birthers" and faux patriotic cranks and their GOP
puppet masters. And I'm really pissed at the Democratic Party that
confuses having a plate of limp noodles with having a spine.

I'm going to vomit if I hear the word "bipartisanship" one more time.

It was "bipartisanship" that gave us this activist conservative
Supreme Court. A Supreme Court that says money is free speech and
corporations are persons except when real people try to hold them
accountable for their greed and poisonous ways.

"Bipartisanship" gave us the Patriot Act and FISA and illegal wiretaps
and two wars and "free speech zones" and "no fly" lists. God bless
bipartisan America.

I get nauseated every time the Senate explains how it takes a super
majority to do anything for the American people. Tell you what Senate
Bozos, if it takes 60 votes to pass legislation than it should take
60% of the popular vote to get you elected.

When some Tea Party crank says, "I want my country back," I respond,
"No madam, you want your country backward."

When a deficit-mongering politician says, "How do we pay for this?"
Why not ask, "What did you Republicans do with the surplus we
Democrats left you?"

When a compassionate conservative says, "Healthcare reform is
socialism," why not answer, "No, sir it is the moral and American way
to care for people."

Yes, I can hear it now: "You are naïve and simplistic. These are
complicated matters and require sophisticated solutions. Democrats are
a big tent and strive for balance. But Republicans block our path at
every turn. We are thinking and considering new ways to work in
harmony with everyone."

Bite me.

The only thing you get with "harmony" is a Barbershop Quartet.

Democrats stop being Republican Lite. Stop whining about that mean GOP
and their nasty messaging. Grow a pair, get a message, get a bumper
sticker and hang it out there. Get some strong vivid talking points.

G-O-P = Greed Over People.

Greed Kills - jobs, people and the economy.

Terrorism is Viagra for Republicans: The more fear - the more excited they get.

Don't act so shocked, Democratic Party. Have you looked around lately?

You're losing the young vote that showed up to elect Obama. You're
losing those old enough to remember real Democrats. Why? Because you

When a soldier dies for America, who dares ask if they were gay or straight?

To those who have responded - THANKS! Interesting mix of views. And to those who haven't responded, do it asap, because we'll be ending this soon. But not before we starting harnessing  our anger and energy into some earth-shakin' business. At the end of the week, I will send emails to those of you who have shared your thoughts, and see about us all getting together (Edith suggested a meeting room at the Library) If you haven't responded by then, you will drop off the list.  We'll get together to know each other a little better, and see if we can agree on common issues and goals. I realize that many of you have been (and continue) to do good work individually or with a group. Maybe we can even do some good old coalition-building. Whatever it turns out to be, it will be good. I am glad to know some of you already,  and hope to know the rest soon. We have alot of work to do. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead

(This from Todd Lambert, who lives in the Chicago area - he sent this to me, instead of the list, so I'm reposting it here - I am lucky to have him as a cousin. Too bad he lives up near Chicago.

"Hi Dave and progressives, and cheers for your encouraging words for progressives to unite and "fight" (back). I'm a Fort Wayne native who lives in the Chicago area and so not likely to attend many real time assemblies. However, like you, I am "mad as hell and not going to take it any longer". I know what I am mad about and I know that my broad targets of mad may be not the same as everyone else. Since google screwed up my first reply to your invitation, I've had time to read the wise and intelligent responses of some others as well as the op eds. Now I must wonder if my mad is not different from that of others and that maybe our progressive bearing is not broad rather than focused. It seems to me that the first challenge for this group is to clarify exactly who and what is the focus of our anger. I didn't agree with the article. It sounds as though many are really disappointed to fine out they elected John Wayne and he didn't show up to tell us pilgrims to follow him and shout out that encouraging "wagons ho". Can I be reading and hearing that right? The President, along with Bill Clinton, is the brightest and boldest that we have had in generations. But he has been given a mountain to turn and reverse direction. With nice guys like Carl Rove still "making policy" and congressional blocks like Senator McConnel and Congressman Boehner (spelling may be wrong. I don't care) proudly executing the Republican strategy of preventing progress and attacking character of the President, Obama is doing an exceptional job of holding his temper while frequently outflanking these guys. I'm not inflexible. I lived for many years as a Republican in Denny Hastert's Congressional District and his chief of staff was a long term colleague of mine. I know their game if that's what it's called. Some replies to your invitation to speak are wonderfully intelligent and inspirational and influence me strongly. Some replies appear to be tenderly spiritual or humanistic but we need some animal meat on those tender bones. My work and career life has been mostly spent in management and executive development and education. As I view the world of leadership today, I feel as a failure at times. I didn't make a dent I think. The bad, greedy, autocratic guys like Cheny rose to the top instead of those I influenced to harness collaboration and responsible unity. But wait, along comes a guy from the same school of thinking. A whole lot smarter than me. Maybe he can actually do it. We voters certainly thought he could. We should know it takes a lot of time to turn that mountain. It takes a lot of time and patience for supporters to continue support and help with little successes and celebrate them like crazy. Let's get the anger in the right place. Not the President but the anti-Presidents. Not the failures but the successes. If we choose to march, lets print the banners correctly. Lets write the blogs in the positive. Lets even pray for this man's (and wife's) courage and boldly ask the consertatives to wave their blank banners. What have they got. Personal wealth gains for the wealthy? Further tax cuts? Reduced health care for the needy? Deprivation for the emotionally disturbed and needy? They only have the language of "No" and "We cannot afford" and "We should attack". Health care comes first. Whatever gain comes out, lets celebrate that step as another shovel in the mountain. I really like this group already. "

Dear Indiana Activists,
The Midwest Peace & Justice Summit coming on March 26 and 27th 2010
at IUPUI in Indianapolis.
It is an opportunity for fellow activists from all sorts of
progressive causes to come together,
get to know each other and share out common values and concerns. There
are many valuable
workshops and speakers to listen to and tables with information to
look at. But of particular importance
in my opinion is the IPJN Regional Organizing Plenary to take place
right after lunch. This is a
dedicated slot for all of us to get together and address the issues of
our organizing work within the
context of dhow to make our state-wide efforts more effective. We are
looking for ways to organize
the 75 minutes allotted for this plenary. I have suggested that Erin
Polley give a ten minute report
on the efforts of providing alternative information and opportunities
for young people instead of joining
the military ( and related issues). Frank has suggested that someone
make a ten minute presentation
on the state of progressive organizing in Indiana. I am willing to do
that in consultation with Tom
Healy (who is working on the new issue of Hoosier Peacemaker) and Erin
and Lori ( who have been
making phone calls to peace groups state-wide). Another suggestion is
to talk about how to use
this issue of the Hoosier Peacemaker in our organizing. It would be
very helpful if you have ideas
to share on how to make our state-wide organizing more effective for
you to send them out beforehand.
Please give it some thought and write your ideas down so when we sit
down together we can
have a good discussion. Also I hope everyone will make sure to share
the Summit info with others in
their group and make an effort to attend. Best regards, Sheila
p.s. This will be one of the agenda items on the IPJN Conference Call
on Thursday
March 11th. I hope you can join us!

Your cousin in Chicago has helped me harness some of my anger and frustration. He gave me another perspective on my impatience. But I remember the signs whenever I visited a doctor: "Don't Vote for Socialized Medicine." That was right after WWII, in 1947. Sixty-three years ago. Of course, it was 72 years from Seneca Falls to 1920 when women were finally franchised. But regarding health care, we can't wait another nine years.

Frankly, I don't believe the health insurance industry should be allowed to even exist. As a retiree, I am covered by Medicare and a government supplemental plan for a total cost of $220 per month. I never pay a penny more for hospitalizations, lab work, or doctor visits. Why can't everybody be transitioned over to the coverage I have? why shouldn't health care be paid through taxes instead of health insurance premiums to profit-making corporations?

And why can't we have public works like we used during the last depression (the one in the 1930s) so we have lasting structures for future generations, such as we have in our national parks.

Dear Friends,
I am very cautiously replying, because I do want to remain on this list and because I care deeply about peace and justice. I am a Friend (of The Religious Society of. . .) I am a follower of the way, in other words, the way of Christ. I am often, very often, weighed down by the enormous injustices done from the individual level on up. Even being a pacifist, I admit to occasional fantasies of acting out my anger toward evil- doers, individual and corporate. But Christ did not take on Rome - he took on our souls and continues to teach us how to live. I live my life in the way of his teachings; peace, compassion, forgiveness, faithfulness and truth.
I can stand up and "speak truth to power" when needed. I can speak truth about the roots of suffering, the deception in government, the love of money and power.
I believe in the purpose and intent of ipjn. I have often held both the issues and individuals in prayer without anyone knowing. I also believe that God has a plan and it is in action.
I know I probably come off as either lame or a kook, or both. Sorry.

Thanks, Dave, for initiating this needed discussion.   We are having a related discussion in Lafayette of what to do next and how to deal with what is apparently a low energy phase in the progressive forces.   I can’t help feeling that some of it is class-based, e.g. many of us on the left have not really felt the impact of the economic crisis.  Many of us HAVE health insurance and HAVE jobs.   And our kids are (mostly)  NOT turning to the military for “a futureâ€.    During the Bush years we were angrier because we saw our whole world turned upside down with things veering rapidly to the right – attacks on civil liberties, racial equality,  worker rights,  environment, education, science, gay rights --  and endless wars, torture etc.      We were also scared that the U.S. was enraging the rest of the world by its foreign policy and truly putting our security at risk.   With Obama in office we breathed a sigh a relief.   It’s great to have as president a serious intelligent and cultured person, who shares many of our values, and is trying to push a progressive agenda.   But in reality, how much have things really changed?   (We continue to have attacks on civil liberties, racial equality, worker rights, etc.)    We are seeing the limitations of our electoral two-party system, which we knew all along.   Of course, I think we should continue to support progressive Democrats against the (usually) unprogressive Republicans.   But we have seen time and time again, that that alone cannot precipitate the changes we need. We must continue to build the independent progressive movement(s), however long that takes.   What else is there?     In doing so, we also have to overcome the left’s seeming uneasiness with organizations and organizing.     If we do not build our own organizations we will be powerless.

When both political parties support war over peace, torture over human rights, property rights over human rights and the continuation of elite rule over a system that actually springs from and is answerable to the people; it is time to realize that voting for the lesser of two evils is nothing more than endorsing the monstrous system that is U.S. capitalism.

This from Betty Carroll:

"Hi Dave,

Dear Indiana Activists,
The Midwest Peace & Justice Summit coming on March 26 and 27th 2010
at IUPUI in Indianapolis.
It is an opportunity for fellow activists from all sorts of
progressive causes to come together,
get to know each other and share out common values and concerns. There
are many valuable
workshops and speakers to listen to and tables with information to
look at. But of particular importance
in my opinion is the IPJN Regional Organizing Plenary to take place
right after lunch. This is a
dedicated slot for all of us to get together and address the issues of
our organizing work within the
context of dhow to make our state-wide efforts more effective. We are
looking for ways to organize
the 75 minutes allotted for this plenary. I have suggested that Erin
Polley give a ten minute report
on the efforts of providing alternative information and opportunities
for young people instead of joining
the military ( and related issues). Frank has suggested that someone
make a ten minute presentation
on the state of progressive organizing in Indiana. I am willing to do
that in consultation with Tom
Healy (who is working on the new issue of Hoosier Peacemaker) and Erin
and Lori ( who have been
making phone calls to peace groups state-wide). Another suggestion is
to talk about how to use
this issue of the Hoosier Peacemaker in our organizing. It would be
very helpful if you have ideas
to share on how to make our state-wide organizing more effective for
you to send them out beforehand.
Please give it some thought and write your ideas down so when we sit
down together we can
have a good discussion. Also I hope everyone will make sure to share
the Summit info with others in
their group and make an effort to attend. Best regards, Sheila
p.s. This will be one of the agenda items on the IPJN Conference Call
on Thursday
March 11th. I hope you can join us!

Midwest Peace and Justice Summit

Good Folks who consider yourselves "progressives:"

OK. As much as I hate to cut this off, I promised, originally, it would happen. But wait!
Something even better is coming!

As electrifying, educational, and enlightening as these email exchanges have been, they are
coming to an end, at least via this venue. There are several on the original list (maybe you are one of them) who,
by virtue of the fact they have not responded, may not wish to have their boxes cluttered up. (Or may not even
consider themselves a lefty, or a progressive, or a feminist, or whatever.

When I originally threw the rock with a note on it down the street a week or so ago, I didn't have a clue who (or if anyone) would pick it up.
I had no idea it would generate the feedback and discourse that's happened so far. And it's been great!

It confirmed my suspicion that there are more of us out there than I realized, and that's comforting.
We probably need a place (cybernetically speaking) where we can continue what we have started. Imho, there is much too much
energy and talent out there to lose. From several of you, I have picked up the notion that we need to continue
to provide a forum of sorts for those of us who want to continue our
examinations, proddings, and discourse. There is now a Yahoo Group for just that purpose.
Have a look:  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fortwayne_lefties/ You may not like the name
(I picked Lefties, since the Right hate it so much)

I don't have a clue where this is headed. It's up to all of us to decide, and to make it happen.
Each of us have loyalties to certain causes and issues. Most of you know mine.

If you wish to continue to be a part of what we have started, you'll need to join
the group (it's painless and free) Send an email to: fortwayne_lefties-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Thanks to all who have shared their views.  and we'll meet you "on the other side"  fortwayne_lefties-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Thanks to  those on this email list who have put up with the rest of us. Who knows? Maybe you will
join us. We plan to make change happen!  Some suggest it's time for all of us to meet, physically, and continue
the revolution. I'm up for that but, first, let's get our own group on Yahoo, where we can begin the planning.

Again, thanks to all you "Lefties" who have taken a genuine interest and are voicing your support for  Change!

Paz y Justicia,

Dave

Nope, you don't come off the way you mentioned, and I, for one, am glad you
continue to speak truth to power. More like you are needed, especially to speak to our
religious brothers and sisters.

Sorry.
Diann Herzog

I am presuming that the reason you got this email is because you are one of the many progressives

While Tea Partiers protest loudly at the mess we're in progressives seem to be stewing in their own sterile
politeness. Please read the
Alternet article by Clancy Sigel and
let me know what you think. Or aren't you pissed off enough? (yet)

Non-Violence and Direct Action Training

Saturday, March 13, 2010
1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Earth House

Organized by the American Friends Service Committee and CODEPINK Central IN.

Subject: [ipjn] Republicans and a few Dems in Congress vote for more war

Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) attempted to get his resolution forcing the withdrawal of
American forces no later than Dec. 31.  passed, but Democrats sided with Republicans
and the measure was soundly rejected.

Rep. Patrick Kennedy, yesterday, took the media to task their ignoring  the
war in Afghanistan, focusing, instead on the silliness of Eric Massa

But have a look at how the media, under attack, defends itself by calling Kennedy's floor speech
 a "tirade," and "spin".

How do you fight against the media, who buy their ink by the barrel, paper by the ton, and
have a cadre of good lawyers on retainer?

I'll tell you how: WE must become the media!

Peace soon,

Dave

Very sad to see Andre Carson on that list of "Nays". As someone who voted for him in the past I'll be sending him a letter to let him him know what I think of his decision. Anyone want to join me?
