According to the Barbelith website, an author named Douglas Rushkoff
said on <his> webpage that he had just finalized a deal with Artisan
Pictures to turn the Invisibles into a movie. Haven't heard about the tv

Well said. I think the supernatural and the religious/mythological
says a lot about our humanity but the wholesale concentration on the
symbol over the idea of the symbol absolutely disappoints me in the
human race and always has.

Yeah, I liked 'Foucault's Pendulum,' but I also felt its ending was
intellectually dishonest. I mean, Eco spends the whole novel exploiting
and exploring the fact that far-fetched conspiracies are cool and
interesting, but then dismisses them at the end by saying they don't
measure up to Christianity. This bothered me.
After all, yes, he's right, most occultism and conspiracy theories are
crap, and he's right to debunk the attitude behind them...but, as we
Invisibles readers know, all that paranoia stuff makes great *reading*.
It's imaginative. It's mentally and emotionally stimulating. My making
his novel basically suck its power from this modern mythology, and then
*sneer* at that mythology as being intellectually inferior, Eco isn't
being fair. We *need* our conspiracies! Believing in them, as the
loonies in his novel do, is really beside the point. They're fun to
think about.

Besides, suggesting that occultism is inferior to Christianity, of all
things, strikes me as kind of funny. I'd be more impressed by Eco's
debunking of superstition if he weren't advocating a different
superstition as a substitute.

I bought _Filth_ in late August or so, but haven't gotten up the effort to
read it yet. After _Maribou Stork Nightmares_ I've found I have to be in
a really foul mood to thoroughly enjoy Welsh. Right now I'm rereading
_Foucault's Pendulum_ by Umberto Eco, which I've found to be the single
best conspiracy novel I've ever read, closely followed by _The Crying of
Lot 49_. As much fun as the _Illuminatus_ trilogy is, if you want some
good mindblowing conspiracy things, I strongly recommend those two.

Like I told someone at the newsroom tonight, there are really no likable

Next on the list is Jon Stewart's _Naked Pictures of Famous People_.

I read that this summer, out on a couple of islands in the Boundary
Waters/Quetico National Park in Canada. Hell of a place to read a book
like that; I'm sitting there salivating at the prospect of the technology
(this is my reaction to Transmetropolitan, Neal Stephenson, most of the
'dark' future stuff; I could deal with plagues and nano-attacks if I could
have a maker and be a gargoyle, dammit).

It's amazing how non-crap all the computer stuff seems almost 10 years
after the book was written. I found a copy of Stephenson's Zodiac this
August and read it as well; I enjoyed it almost as much as Snow Crash and
moreso than the Diamond Age; I know the Diamond Age is more developed an'
all, but it just left me cold.

I'm almost finished with _Filth_, by Irvine Welsh. As soon as I finish
that, I catch up on my massive class backlog of 18-19th Century American
Lit junk. It was seemingly pointless and painful for the first 100 or so
pages, then had a lot of tantalizing bits in between the filth, so to
speak, and now it's just bizarre and intruiging. Only a few chapters left
and I'm still piecing it together. Plus the endearing obligatory cameos
from Trainspotting and Marabou Stork Nightmares characters. Makes me want
to reread both of those and check for characters from Filth.

On the comics side, I'm enjoying the hell out of Black Panther, Jay &
Silent Bob, and Transmetropolitan.

The first bman/jd had eye-popping art by simon bisley but the rest have
been crap. I really miss the old judge dredd stories by john wagner.
They were some of the best in 2000ad. I dont know if he is still writing
it? Judge Dredd used to have some brilliant future prophesy/social
commentry : future shock, those guns that fired the crowd control
sponge etc.

The hate jamboree has just come out and so has evil eye#2 and Geisha
from Oni press is cool.

I'm currently reading Gates of Eden by Ethan Coen of the Coen Brothers who
did Fargo. It's pretty cool so far, it's a book of his short stories, I'm
only three stories in but it's been really funny, any one into their
films should check it out.

On the Comics front I just read Batman/Judge Dredd - Die Laughing 1, that
was ok, not the sort of thing I usually read but I though I'd check it out.

I thought that Grant said that part of the problem with vol 1 losing
sales was due to not having a regular artist on the series. Personally,
I thought it worked better with different artists for each storyline so
that the artist fitted the appropriate story. Vol 2 needs a uniform
look because its all basically got the same theme - Americana. I cant
wait to see phil bonds work again.

Hi,

Good morning fellow blank badgers. Somehow a blank badger conjures up a
picture of a bewildered, moderately large and somewhat rare indigenous British
mammal, rather than a member of the shock troups in the battle against
conformity. Perhaps this is part of the cover!

Any road up. I've just been re-reading Volume One and I'm surprised by how uch
I had forgotten. The various appearences by the Chess-Playing Man and more
interestingly the hanging threads. E.g. The original S&M man himself - He is
supposed to be important to the final outcome but vanished with a young boy in
tow about #9. There's Division X, which in the letters column yonks ago Grant
told us would figure prominantly in Volume 2, presumably "Invisibly".

Well I just thought that I'd plonk my oar in to these waters and see who's out
there.

PS - Remember: There are people out there who believe that no matter what you
do, who you do it with and where you do it, the Little Baby Jesus is watching
it all. That's the really scary thing.

Well, as this list gets started up and more and more people subscribe,
I'll be posting occasional welcomes. I'm Chip, the list moderator. So to
start the discussion rolling, I would like people's opinions as to whom
the Blind Chessman is. Mine is forthcoming.

[The English] are the most tribal group
of people on the planet. They hate one
another and they're stuck on this f---ing
little island. That's why they went out
and created an empire. Anyone with any
energy had to get out of this place and
kill somebody else. So they've invented this
veneer of civilization, but it's only to keep
them from killing each other.
