Welcome to the international INTERACTIVE WiB group in the English language ! The purpose of this women only list is to enable discussions among WiB members worldwide.
We are aware that a lot of WiB's do not understand English. We also recognize that using the English language is going to privilege those of us with English as mother tongue. The list is in English not because any of us think that it is better or worse than other languages, but it simply because it is the "communication tool" we most commonly share. At the same time we want to invite those of you who are fluent in other languages: when you see something you would wish to translate into another language, so more women can join the discussion, please do a translation, and repost it on this same list. In this way our discussions in this INTERACTIVE WiB group can grow into a really creative Babel, even cross-relating between languages.
For information: WIB also has a quite separate MAILING-OUT e-list which is non-interactive. It is only to sent out information and announcements. If you are not already on the MAILING-OUT LIST and you would like to join it, please go to http://www.nodo50.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/womeninblack and introduce yourself and I will subscribe you.
Women in Black against War is a world-wide feminist network of women committed to peace with justice and actively opposed to injustice, war, militarism, homophobia and other forms of violence. We are not an organisation, but an international network, a means of communicating and a formula for action.
WiB use non-violent and non-aggressive forms of action. A characterisic form of action is the silent vigil, wearing black. But in addition to vigils Women in Black groups use many other forms of non-violent direct action. Wearing black in some cultures signifies mourning, and feminist actions dressed in black convert women’s traditional passive mourning for the dead in war into a powerful refusal of the logic of war.
