BTW, John, just because you have not covered those areas, it does not mean
that someone else did not before you. That is probably why there is an
"opening" in your area for "new" investigators. These posts have been going
on for several years and the opportunity pool gets a little more shallow
after each event. If you have a lottery in Florida, you may wish to
consider that alternative.

I agree with you any the many others, how can you not. There seems to be 10 to 1
odds that it is not profitable for anyone.

You can start by not posting the assignments on this group! By doing this
you are giving them free marketing. Doing so may lead new investigators to
think this is a legitimate assignment since you allow it in the newsgroup.

I also view this as someone who moderates my own lists. I know that belaboring
one topic for days can run people off to unsubscribe cuz they just get sick of
it.
This is not my list, but it's just one opinion.
I think the point has been made, don't you?

   Hey, Ron,

You are a smart guy, so I'll bet you know how to delete a message without
   reading it. Am I correct?

Unfortunately, there are still people out there in need of education. Since
you already have yours, just delete anything you do not care to read, and,
as YOU said, move on. (8>)

In all fairness though, I have seen posts on some list where the
investigator is paid a flat rate, I think $100 for working these events. I
do not recall who the company was.

John,

The unofficial results of my non-scientific poll is currently closer to 20
to 1. Many people have expressed that they made a ton of money when analog
big dish "C" band signal piracy was much easier than today's digital world.

Every respondent has said that the number of "hits" gets smaller with each
event. Guess what, the promoters are just as aware of that as our
colleagues. They know that with each event, they will have to pay less and
less money and get their event policed for free. Who pays the costs? We
do. HELLO?

My problem, is that I seem to not be able to get my basic point across to
the masses.

My basic point is why should we even be asked to work on a charitable basis
when no one else involved in the event does so? The promoter is certainly
not "non-profit". If they want our time, let them pay for it just like
every other client. Why are they "special"?

Best regards,

Rus

BTW, John, just because you have not covered those areas, it does not
mean
that someone else did not before you. That is probably why there is an
"opening" in your area for "new" investigators. These posts have been
going
on for several years and the opportunity pool gets a little more shallow
after each event. If you have a lottery in Florida, you may wish to
     consider that alternative.

Hard to tell about "point made". I get new e-mails every hour but I cannot
say that everyone understands the big picture. They say that water seeks
its own level, so when folks get tired of talking about it, they will.

I think trying to censor the posts of others goes against the reason we had
a big was about 230 years ago. Don't you? How far should we get set back?

I also view this as someone who moderates my own lists. I know that
belaboring one topic for days can run people off to unsubscribe cuz they
just get sick of it.
This is not my list, but it's just one opinion.
I think the point has been made, don't you?

     Hey, Ron,

You are a smart guy, so I'll bet you know how to delete a message
without

Unfortunately, there are still people out there in need of education.
Since

as YOU said, move on. (8>)

Good call, Ed.

Unfortunately, I do not own any of the lists where these posting originate.

I am curious as to how these good folks got on the lists in the first place.
I thought being a licensed investigator (or unlicensed in states without a
requirement) was mandatory for inclusion.

Regards,

Rus

You can start by not posting the assignments on this group! By doing this
you are giving them free marketing. Doing so may lead new investigators to
think this is a legitimate assignment since you allow it in the newsgroup.

       Hey, Ron,

You are a smart guy, so I'll bet you know how to delete a message
   without
       reading it. Am I correct?

Unfortunately, there are still people out there in need of education.
   Since
you already have yours, just delete anything you do not care to read,
   and,
as YOU said, move on. (8>)

Hi Ed,

My take on the situation is more for the big picture than individual gain.
I feel that our profession is looking very stupid by taking these
assignments "on the come". You can read all the posts from the weekend for
greater details on the supporting commentary.

The bottom line is that very few people, by percentage, of those who take
these cases, ever make any money. The much larger majority not only work for
free, but it costs them money to take the assignment. They finish in the
red.

Who else works for free or donates their time to the promoters who get
filthy rich off the same event? No one.

IMHO, we are fools for taking the cases and not demanding to be paid for our
time, just like we demand from every other client. Why are fight promoters
"special"?

In all fairness though, I have seen posts on some list where the
investigator is paid a flat rate, I think $100 for working these events.
I
do not recall who the company was.

Leif....

Your P.S. says it all.

Does your criteria state anything about being a licensed investigator for
membership to this list? Unless there is credible evidence to the contrary,
I have seen nothing to indicate that the person posting is a licensed
investigator.

I vote for not allowing them to post. I, too, will follow the majority vote
which ever way it goes.

Sorry, Ron. No defense intended. My not having any idea at what point
people have jumped in to this discussion makes it difficult to predict or
say with certainty who knows what.

Sorry again, I do not know the song about which you speak.

I agree that by now the point should have been made. But, as you know, until
some folks get hit with a 2 X 4, the point does not soak in. I sincerely
hope that everyone who reads this thread has understood that some have to
sacrifice a little for the good of all. I can say that the overwhelming
majority of responses came from people who never realized what was happening
to them, and not for them.

I am sure the promoters knew in the back of their minds that this day would
come eventually. Sorry I had to be the one to expose the (insert your own
term).

If anyone has any questions or comments, please send them to me privately,
so as to not disrupt whatever other thread on this list is more important at
the moment.

Ron, you are still one of my best friends on these lists and I hope no hard
feelings have come between us as a result of this exposure.

Regards,

Rus

Don't be defensive. Don't use a button pushing word like censor. To
quote a song:

Hard to tell about "point made". I get new e-mails every hour but I
cannot
say that everyone understands the big picture. They say that water
seeks
its own level, so when folks get tired of talking about it, they will.

I think trying to censor the posts of others goes against the reason we
had
a big was about 230 years ago. Don't you? How far should we get set
back?

I also view this as someone who moderates my own lists. I know that
belaboring one topic for days can run people off to unsubscribe cuz they
     just get sick of it.
This is not my list, but it's just one opinion.

         Hey, Ron,

You are a smart guy, so I'll bet you know how to delete a message
     without

I vote to terminate their membership in this group. They have the ability to
form their own yahoo group and do as they wish, but I agree we should not
allow them to mock our profession by their cons.

Still there are people out there serving process for $15-$20 a pop. Ever
wonder what would happen in our civil courts if process was not served?

Mr. Robison,

I do appreciate your vigor. However, I am

To those of you who seem to be apologists for the activities of these
promotors, hasn't it occurred to you why they keep advertising for help? If
these "assignments" were indeed profitable, they would have long ago found
people in every area who would snap up these jobs, and no futher advertising
would be necessary. But obviously they haven't found people willing to keep
doing this work. Draw your own conclusions!

Excellent post, Ron.

I personally hate process serving. It is a pain in the @$$ to me, so I refer
it out. Sometimes, on the rarest of occasions, we will actually serve some
ourselves. We charge a regular hourly rate or $100 whichever is greater.
We charge by the trip and waiting time if necessary.

Like you said, supply and demand.

I vote to terminate their membership in this group. They have the
ability to
form their own yahoo group and do as they wish, but I agree we should
not
allow them to mock our profession by their cons.

Still there are people out there serving process for $15-$20 a pop. Ever
wonder what would happen in our civil courts if process was not served?

Ric,

The e-mails are not directed at you. They are just coming to you as a
privilege of your being a member of this fine list. I have asked everyone
who has an interest in this thread to contact me privately so messages to
the board should subside.

I hope the information you have received was beneficial and that you
continue to be a part of, and contributor to, this list.

Dear Moderator:

Your proposed polling of 563 group members to vote as to terminate
our access to the list, as well as the other firms who hire private
investigators for a variety of tasks related to signal piracy,
process service, civil and criminal background checks, and a host of
other assignments - seems to stem from less than a dozen critics,
one of which has stated it is his mission to keep all private
investigators in your group (and others) from working both on a paid
or bounty basis as our firm and others in the past have offered. If
you permit the few to decide on your motion, then it is of course
your choice and we can move on.

In reading your group mission statement and forum rules:

"Infoguys listserve is a tool for the information professional, the
attorney, the private investigator, and the general public."

Answer: We have certainly abided by your mission statement.

------

"It's aim is the friendly, useful, and responsible exchange of legal
investigative information among all its list members."

Answer:
In the face of some comments posted board members who have been less
than friendly, we will continue to honor your rules of exchange.
However, one member wrote:

------

"This is starting to sound like a personal vendetta (whether it is
or not);let's educate those who have no experience to the pros and
cons of doing so, and let them make their own individual educated
choice."

Answer:
Our educational forums are at another site. If an applicant
inquires as to the details of the agreement, they can be either
emailed or faxed or accessed with a pass code to a website. Posting
the full educational certifications to your group would be a
disservice to your mission statement and agenda. But the education
is readily available for those to make an informed decision without
relying on an opinion posted by a handful.

------

"Use the list to network, to contact a source out of your
geographical area or out of your area of expertise. Use the list to
find an investigator or to find a client."

Answer:
That is our aim.

------

"Please refrain from aggressive advertising..."

Answer:
There has only been one other firm this year that has advertised
openings. I believe a search under both our names will find that
our advertising for this assignment has been once in early August,
and one more on some groups where we posted a deadline for this
week. Other firms in the last 5 years may have been more
aggressive. We chose not to do so.

------

Well-recognized leaders in the industry and in private investigation
have posted signal piracy assignments to this group. A simply
search using the keyword "piracy" will reveal the names of many who
have endorsed these types of assignments.

------

Other comments and questions posted include:

"Does your criteria state anything about being a licensed
investigator for membership to this list? Unless there is credible
evidence to the contrary, I have seen nothing to indicate that the
person posting is a licensed investigator."

Answer:
Private Investigators who work for law firms do not require an
additional state license if their assignments and employment pertain
to the law firm's clients, operating under the professional license
of the attorney. Nearly all states that regulate private
investigators have a minimum of 12 exemptions to licensing.
Further, there are 6-7 states where no licensing is required on a
state level.

------

"The current poll is running at 10+ to 1 for people not making a
dime in this endeavor."

Answer:
At last count, there are over 100,000 private investigators in the
USA (both regulated and unregulated). There are 563 group members
here. There are over 1000 private investigators and professionals
who continually earn paychecks from our firm and others. Not
everyone earns a check. Not everyone works bounty only. Not
everyone works hourly. At best, the poll is skewed.

------

"I have gotten as many as seven (7) violators for one event by
myself, and made about $2,000.00 for three (3) hours of work. Since
then most of the establishments in Atlanta are legal, and the
benefits have dried up."

Answer:
Our firm does not over promote a low advertised or little-known
event. If we do, we offer it for newcomers as a dry run training
exercise to become familiar with the territory and suspects. For
experienced pros, we only invite them to these less active events if
the investigator has nothing else to do on a Saturday night for 3
hours. We make it our business to follow the news and the
promotion. For the bigger events, such as this coming match, it is
not to be missed by those who know there will be thieves. Even so,
we have had calls from the promoters for some areas where they have
salaried investigators $100 for coverage. There may be areas that
have "dried up" for pirates, but some of those areas are still
salaried by the promoters to insure legal auditing.

------

"there is no motivation to change by the promoter. It costs him
nothing for us to go beat our brains out."

Answer:
To the contrary, investigators have been offered either a bounty
only agreement or a salary-only for $100 with some firms. The
determination on the bounty (for our firm) is that the investigator
must become qualified (or trained) for the assignment before he/she
is dispatched. For the salaried positions, it is a matter of
applying with a resume and employment history.

------

"an opening in your area for "new" investigators. These posts have
been going on for several years and the opportunity pool gets a
little more shallow after each event."

Answer:
In the last 8 years there have been a few private investigators who
falsified their reports in order to be paid double the earnings
through a fellow conspirator. Some firms chose to limit the areas
of coverage to preclude such fraud. Other firms have opened up
their territories to all interested, which may have caused too much
coverage. Our firm employs a check and balance procedure to prevent
fraud. Moreover, because of this procedure, we have paid bounties
to more than one investigator who made the same hit on the same
pirate. Therefore, our "opportunity pool" is well managed.

------

Summary:

In all fairness, we respectfully request the readers of your group
to refrain from assuming facts based on opinion. Our participation
with your group will remain, as it has always been, that of an
invited guest. We will conduct ourselves with the utmost respect to
you, the list owner, and to your members - regardless of what they
may post in return.

For those who are interested in interacting with seasoned
professionals who have made consistent money with our firm, we
invite you to contact our office directly.

Ric,

This is a "group" list, not an individual e-mail service.

Items posted here are for the benefit of the group as a whole, not to just
please one individual. The information posted about the piracy scam was for
the protection of the private investigation profession, which I can only
assume you are a part thereof. If you learned nothing from the posts, shame
on you.

I believe I explained to you yesterday that I moved the discussion to
private e-mail and off the list. What part of that e-mail did you not
understand? Have you seen any new postings on the subject since that time?

Post a topic of interest to yourself and the rest of us will try our best to
not be interested.

Rus

Well it seems to me that the list is today (and yesterday) was
motivated and sharing information. As the list owner I received 100+
private emails telling me to stop or not stop the postings. (About
50/50) I did receive some downright rude mail also (not to fear my
feelings are not hurt) the group has however spoken. The rules were
followed. No one person told, showed or gave any specific example
that there were any "cheating or misleading" statements.

I worked as a PI in Connecticut for 7 years 5 of which I was an
apprentice. I then managed to get a license and continued to work for
the company. My favorite statement (told to me by the owner of that
company) when I showed up at the office after losing my claimant in
traffic and being able to bill a whopping 1.5 hours for the day
(about $50.00 dollars)....

Sometimes you eat the bear sometimes the bear eats you.

There has been enough opinions posted that the average PI should be
able to make a responsible decision about taking or not taking an
assignment Both sides of this have been clearly commented about that
will give everyone something to think about.

As you all know PIs in general and the general public you always
get paid for all the work you do don't you? You would never drive
by
a claimant's house while traveling to a different case would you?
When is the last time you charged a client for batteries or any other
accessory that makes you life easier?

Well I am just ranting now, I get cranky. (Just like everybody else
when everything does not go my way.)

PS Until today I never realized that so many group members are
willing to participate.

Thank you all for your emails and posts.
