Ajahn Bhaddanta Asabha, was born in Myanmar in 1911. In 1950, he took intensive vipassana meditation under Mahasi Sayadaw. In the same year, Mahasi Sayadaw appointed Ajahn Asabha as vipassana meditation master of the Mahasi Sasana Yeiktha Meditation Center (Rangoon). In 1952, Mahasi Sayadaw chose Ajahn Asabha to take on the responsibility to bring the practice of vipassana meditation to Thailand. Ajahn Asabha was Head Meditation Master at Vivek Asom Meditation Center (Chonburi, Thailand), where he taught vipassana meditation for 37 years. In 1999, Ajahn Asabha became President of Wat Bhaddanta Asabha Theravada and Head Meditation Master at Sommit Pranee Vipassana Meditation Center, where he now resides.

Ajahn Somsak Sorado, a disciple of Ajahn Asabha, has been teaching vipassana meditation at Vivek Asom Meditation Center for over 5 years. He was in the United States on Buddhist missionary duties for 2 years and is now permanently stationed at Wat Bhaddanta Asabha Theravada.

The retreat is widely open for both beginner and experienced meditators. On the retreat, all meditators are expected to keep silence at all times except when giving meditation reports. All meditators must keep the eight training precepts. Meditators need only bring conservative clothing (preferably white colored clothing), personal hygiene accessories and essential medication.

THE WAY IT IS

A skilful reflection is: 'This is the way it is'. Venerable Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, the renowned Thai sage, said, "If there was to be a useful inscription to put on a medallion around your neck it would be 'This is the way it is'." This reflection helps us to contemplate: wherever we happen to be, whatever time and place, good or bad, 'This is the way it is.' It is a way of bringing an acceptance into our minds, a noting rather than a reaction.

The practice of meditation is reflecting on 'the way it is' in order to see the fears and desires which we create. This is quite a simple practice, but the practice of Dhamma should be very very simple rather than complicated. Many methods of meditation are very very complicated with many stages and techniques - so one becomes addicted to complicated things. Sometimes because of our attachment to views, we don't really know how things are. However, the more simple we get, the more clear, profound and meaningful everything is to us.

For example, consider the people here, the monks and nuns we live with. Maybe some we feel attracted to, some we feel averse to, some we sympathise with, some we understand, some we don't understand; but whatever view we have, we can see it as just a 'view' of a person, rather than a real person. We can hear ourselves saying, "I don't want him to be like that.... I want him to be otherwise. He should be this other way.... shouldn't be like this."

"I want it to be otherwise" is the wail of the age, isn't it? Why can't life be otherwise? Why do people have to die? Why do we have to get old? Why this sickness? Why do we have to be separated from our loved ones? Why do innocent children who wouldn't hurt anyone in their lives, old people who wouldn't hurt anyone - why do they have to suffer from starvation or brutality?

There is always some new horrible thing happening. The other day someone wrote to me about the Bangladesh Muslims trying to get rid of Buddhist Hill Tribes in the Chittagong Hill Tracts through genocide. Then we hear about Iranians trying to eradicate the Bahais... it goes on endlessly. The Sinhalese and the Tamils... There's always this clash between groups.... one trying to take over another's land or power.

This has been going on since who knows when. There's always been someone trying to exterminate someone else since Cain murdered Abel - and that was a long time ago! But each time we hear of these atrocities we say 'How terrible...it shouldn't be...'

We hear about American drug companies selling poisonous and horrible drugs to the Third World countries. "That shouldn't be! Dreadful." The pollution of the planet, the despoiling of the environment, the killing of dolphins and whales...where does it end? What can you do about it? It seems to be an endless problem of human ignorance. At a time when people should know better, they are doing the most horrendous things to each other. It is a time of gloomy predictions...earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and diseases...it shouldn't be like this.

Now saying, 'This is the way it is' is not an approval, or a refusal to do anything, but it is a way of establishing oneself in the knowledge that Nature is 'like this'. In the animal kingdom it's very much a question of survival of the fittest, a natural, self-selecting law where the weaker strains are destroyed. So in that way even Nature is quite brutal, isn't it? We think of Nature as being everything it 'should' be...sweet, with flowers, and sunshine - but Nature is also very brutal.

What is our position in Nature? We can live on the level of the animal kingdom with its emphasis on the survival of the fittest, the strong over the weak and living by fear and power. We can live like that because we share that animal mentality. We have an animal body and it has to survive like any other animal body on this planet. So, the Law of the jungle is something human beings can subscribe to - which many of them do.

But this is only a lower level, isn't it? If we just live on that level then we must expect the world to be as it is - in a state of fear, and anxiety. But as human beings we can get beyond this animal level; we can decide to have some kind of moral standard to abide by so that we don't have to live our lives in a state of anxiety.

But even higher than that is our ability to realise the Truth - to contemplate existence, to cultivate the reflective mind through which we can transcend personality. At the level of moral behaviour we still have very strong personality view. And in our civilisation we've developed a sense of 'me' and 'mine' to absurdity. So strong is this sense of 'me' and 'mine' that it seems to dominate everything and taint everything that we're doing, and there always a sense of anguish and suffering connected with it.

Just contemplate this: whenever there is a sense of 'me' and 'mine' in anything, it always seems to give rise to discontentment or uncertainty or doubt, guilt, fear, or anxiety. There is this view of 'me' as an individual being, that 'this' is mine, that 'I' should or should not, based on a belief in oneself as the body or mental conditions. However, this view is based on an illusion; it comes from conditioning, not from insight. So as long as we identify with the limitations of the body and the mind then of course we are going to experience doubt, despair, anguish, sorrow, grief, and lamentation - these mental forms of suffering. How could it be otherwise? We're certainly not going to get enlightenment from distorted misunderstanding and wrong view.

We have this opportunity now, to establish Right View and Right Understanding which frees us from the personality illusion: the identification with what are called the five aggregates - body, feeling, perception, mental formations and consciousness. So we contemplate the consciousness through the senses - see the eye, ear, nose, tongue and body. We can contemplate mental formations, the yesterdays of our own creation and the thoughts and views that we create. We can see them as impermanent.

We have the ability to contemplate the nature of things, this ability to say, 'This is the way it is'. We can notice 'the way it is' without adapting a personality viewpoint. So with the breath of the body, the weight of it, the posture of it, we are just witnessing and nothing, observing how it is, now, in this moment. The mood of the mind, whether we feel bright or dull, happy or unhappy, is something we can know - we can witness. And the empty mind, empty of the proliferations about oneself and others, is clarity. It's intelligent, and compassionate. The more we really look into the habits we have developed, the more clear things become for us. So we must be willing to suffer, to be bored, and to be miserable and anguished: it's an opportunity to bear with these unpleasant mental states, rather than suppress them. Having been born, this is the way it is, at this time, at this place.

The Buddhist answer I`ve received (from Michigan State Univ. Buddhist group) as to why Buddhism does not condemn the blow-torching and beating to death slowly and agonisingly of dogs is that dogs are a rabid nuisance and have to be killed. Well, the compassionate ones sure enjoy their killing!!!
PLEASE FORWARD THIS!

I consequently stand by my tract: "Buddhism: hypocrisy incarnate" & ask you to consider the following too: that the dog-torturing stops at Buddhism`s western borders!

BOYCOTT KOREA! APPEAL TO WORLD BUDDHIST LEADERS! 2.6 MILLION DOGS PER YEAR TORTURED TO DEATH! THOUSANDS OF DOGS PER DAY HUNG UP AND BLOWTORCHED AND BEATEN SLOWLY TO DEATH. CATS FLUNG ALIVE INTO BOILING WATER.

THE ENQUIRER SUPPLEMENT

BUDDHISM:

HYPOCRISY INCARNATE

_____

ALL RELIGIONS TODAY cloak themselves in a wishy-washy garb of “love” ~ whatever that is supposed to mean. Capitalism has in fact robbed the clergy of the power it had in feudal times & has retained religion simply as a soporific for lulling the workers of the world away from real political & social action. Instead, religious leaders, like pop stars, lead millions in chants for “peace” & “love”, as though these values had an independent existence from the way world society is organised. Millions of the exploited are thus doped by the clergy of the various cults into the big sing-along (like a Coca-Cola advert) with their exploiters, hoping that some “power beyond” will somehow fantastically solve the world`s ills ~ either this side of the grave or, more usually, on the other. (No worries, followers of religious leaders: you will certainly have peace on the other side of the grave, I assure you! This side is less certain, though: while you continue to put your faith in so-called “wise men” ~ or, in the case of Buddhism, wise men from the East!) … Hence, whilst the religious representatives of this or that gang of capitalists, from  flaming-eyed Islamic fanatics to smug Zen priests, reap the rewards of exploitation and confusion-mongering, we are told, whatever happens (bombs killing people  in the Middle East;  Thai students accused of reading Marx being summarily executed at the behest of a saffron-robed Prime Minister oozing peace and love from every pore), we are told not to blame it on the religion. Religion, like Royalty, we are told, stands above politics and trouble. Religion is about “love” and “peace.” So the starry-eyed grovel before this or that robed one with his eyes cast to Heaven, in the same way the teeny-bopper queues in the rain for the latest Britney Spears release.

BUDDHISM IS NO EXCEPTION

I WAS ONCE FOOLISH ENOUGH to believe Buddhism was an exception to this. For one thing, I saw it as a form of moral philosophy rather than as a religion, & for that reason it was popular among Western youth in the 1970s, many of whom still, as adults today, champion what was for centuries a means of keeping the Asian peasantry in its place from

Tibet to Japan & from Mongolia to Cochin China as some kind of great movement for peace & compassion & a counter-weight to the notorious monstrosity (with regard to human rights) that is capitalist (they think it “communist”) Red China, the rapist of Old Tibet. Indeed, prior to the Council of Lhasa in the early Middle Ages, they would have a point. Ancient Indian Buddhism, as passed down from Prince Gautama Siddhartha (the Buddha), was a philosophy centred on compassion (which Buddhism still pretends to be) for all living things. It was in fact an anti-religious, materialist (in philosophical terms, that is) natural & moral philosophy, & Prince Siddhartha`s concept of love was concrete, & somewhat more real than that of today`s sing-along mantra-mongers.

To he who follows the path of the Buddha, all life is precious.

All beings feel pain and fear. When one realises this, one does not kill or cause to kill.

~ The Dhammapada (Pali).

How would Siddhartha have taken, then, to his clerics` silent complicity in the horrors now perpetrated every day in the Buddhist world against innocent animals in the name of la cuisine éxotique ?  … Not too kindly, I should say. How does the Buddhist clergy of today take it? By ignoring it and telling us that a religion such as Buddhism is not to be held responsible for the sins of individual people or nations. Straight out of the mouth of one of today`s Vatican apologists for the crimes of the Pope`s muscle-wrenchers & terrorists of yore. (Only, unlike Catholicism, which has never cared bugger-all for humans or animals, Buddhism has at least proclaimed itself a carer since the the days of yore for all life!) … A Pope or a Mullah could not have put it better, while justifying their own laity against their accusers.

BUT WE ARE NOT FOOLED

WE ARE NOT FOOLED because we, unlike most, are well-read in social history & in reality, & we owe no allegiance to any body of bloody hypocrites garbed in fancy dress, neither from the West nor from the East,  cynically mouthing on about “love” & “peace” whilst justifying the continuance of every type of savagery in the modern world by claiming exemption from responsibility.

We are fully aware of the power held by the clergy of any cult, let alone a worldwide & age-old established cult which has millions of adherents. We are fully aware that those millions are the superstitious who flock regularly to the Buddhist temples of the world ~ knowing in fact nothing of Siddhartha`s moral philosophy (the privilege of clergy, or, “Higher Buddhism”) ~ to ask, when the going gets tough for them & their families & the bank-balance runs short, the Buddha (as though he were some god, instead of an historical personage who was distinctly atheist!) to protect them and reverse their ailing fortunes. The power & influence of the Buddhist clergy, then, are not to be gainsaid.

SO, WHAT ARE WE TO EXPECT OF BUDDHISM faced with this (see: www.koreananimals.org) situation in the midst of the Buddha`s Asian paradise:

2.6 MILLION DOGS PER YEAR IN ONE BUDDHIST COUNTRY ALONE (SOUTH KOREA) TORTURED TO DEATH SLOWLY IN THE BELIEF IT TENDERISES THE MEAT. THOUSANDS PER DAY HUNG UP BY THE THROAT & BLOW-TORCHED; THEN BEATEN WITH CUDGELS; THEIR SCREAMS PROVIDING IMMENSE FUN FOR THE GOOD KOREAN BUDDHISTS WHOSE JOB IT IS TO PERFORM THIS DAILY FUNCTION OF UNTOLD SAVAGERY.

“Koreans are not all Buddhists”, we are told, “many are Catholics.” Well, that doesn`t surprise us then; but what about Cambodia? And if the same happens in Cambodia, a Buddhist Kingdom, surely it happens also in Vietnam (another Buddhist country) & Thailand- Siam, heaven forbid!?  I doubt it not.

And, if Koreans are not all Buddhists, Englishmen are not all Anglicans; Irishmen not all Catholics; yet the weight of a public denunciation from the Christian clergy of these lands on any political issue is never to be underestimated ! But, do the good Buddhist clerics say anything about these horrors? Evidently, they are not that concerned, unlike their ignorant people, about the next reincarnation! A public denunciation would, however, get not a few among their superstitious flocks hand-wringing, would it not?

BUT THE CULT OF THE COMPASSIONATE ONE REMAINS SILENT !

AND, REMAINING SILENT, must accept & admit its complicity!  Ratings, as they say in the world of television, are what matter to the clergy. “Bums on seats” or, joss-stick companies mustn`t be allowed to go bust. … The screams of those in pain drove Siddhartha to distraction; so much so that he gave up a luxurious lifestyle to become an ascetic. Whatever the myth says, and whatever is true & whatever legend, we must confess ourselves moved when we think of Siddhartha as a human being who was so sensitive that he renounced his wealth & made his philosophy of compassion his entire life. It takes a lot of commitment to do that. We do not believe him to have been a man given to remaining silent in the face of cruelty, barbarity & suffering. Rather is a “detached silence” the cynical & smug attitude of the modern Buddhist cleric, who not only chooses not to involve himself in the suffering of others but then proclaims his cynical smugness some sort of “higher wisdom” ~ “seeking nirvana”. We have a phrase in the West for that too. It is called “fiddling while Rome burns.”

NEW MEDITATION TECHNIQUE

LET US SUGGEST a new meditation technique for the celestial Buddhist monk who is so in touch with “Enlightenment” that he thinks silence is golden & a sign of possessing the “higher wisdom.”  Let him do his meditation in the midst of the dogs being blowtorched & cudgelled to death as slowly as possible; the cats being flung alive & screaming in vats of boiling water; the whimpering of these animals as they see what awaits them & hear the screams of agony of their predecessors in the butchers` torture yards; as they are lifted by the legs, muzzled & terrified & placed on the slabs or hung up on the gibbets for the cudgellers & burners.

“ENLIGHTENMENT” WAS NEVER SO SAINTLY!

The United States of America has gone mad
John le Carre

>
America has entered one of its periods of historical madness, but this is
the worst I can remember: worse than McCarthyism, worse than the Bay of Pigs
and in the long term potentially more disastrous than the Vietnam War.
The reaction to 9/11 is beyond anything Osama bin Laden could have hoped for
in his nastiest dreams. As in McCarthy times, the freedoms that have made
America the envy of the world are being systematically eroded. The
combination of compliant US media and vested corporate interests is once
more ensuring that a debate that should be ringing out in every town square
is confined to the loftier columns of the East Coast press.
The imminent war was planned years before bin Laden struck, but it was he
who made it possible. Without bin Laden, the Bush junta would still be
trying to explain such tricky matters as how it came to be elected in the
first place; Enron; its shameless favouring of the already-too-rich; its
reckless disregard for the world's poor, the ecology and a raft of
unilaterally abrogated international treaties. They might also have to be
telling us why they support Israel in its continuing disregard for UN
resolutions.
But bin Laden conveniently swept all that under the carpet. The Bushies are
riding high. Now 88 per cent of Americans want the war, we are told. The US
defence budget has been raised by another $60 billion to around $360
billion. A splendid new generation of nuclear weapons is in the pipeline, so
we can all breathe easy. Quite what war 88 per cent of Americans think they
are supporting is a lot less clear. A war for how long, please? At what cost
in American lives? At what cost to the American taxpayer's pocket? At what
cost - because most of those 88 per cent are thoroughly decent and humane
people - in Iraqi lives?
How Bush and his junta succeeded in deflecting America's anger from bin
Laden to Saddam Hussein is one of the great public relations conjuring
tricks of history. But they swung it. A recent poll tells us that one in two
Americans now believe Saddam was responsible for the attack on the World
Trade Centre. But the American public is not merely being misled. It is
being browbeaten and kept in a state of ignorance and fear. The carefully
orchestrated neurosis should carry Bush and his fellow conspirators nicely
into the next election.
Those who are not with Mr Bush are against him. Worse, they are with the
enemy. Which is odd, because I'm dead against Bush, but I would love to see
Saddam's downfall - just not on Bush's terms and not by his methods. And not
under the banner of such outrageous hypocrisy.
The religious cant that will send American troops into battle is perhaps the
most sickening aspect of this surreal war-to-be. Bush has an arm-lock on
God. And God has very particular political opinions. God appointed America
to save the world in any way that suits America. God appointed Israel to be
the nexus of America's Middle Eastern policy, and anyone who wants to mess
with that idea is a) anti-Semitic, b) anti-American, c) with the enemy, and
d) a terrorist.
God also has pretty scary connections. In America, where all men are equal
in His sight, if not in one another's, the Bush family numbers one
President, one ex-President, one ex-head of the CIA, the Governor of Florida
and the ex-Governor of Texas.
Care for a few pointers? George W. Bush, 1978-84: senior executive, Arbusto
Energy/Bush Exploration, an oil company; 1986-90: senior executive of the
Harken oil company. Dick Cheney, 1995-2000: chief executive of the
Halliburton oil company. Condoleezza Rice, 1991-2000: senior executive with
the Chevron oil company, which named an oil tanker after her. And so on. But
none of these trifling associations affects the integrity of God's work.
In 1993, while ex-President George Bush was visiting the ever-democratic
Kingdom of Kuwait to receive thanks for liberating them, somebody tried to
kill him. The CIA believes that "somebody" was Saddam. Hence Bush Jr's cry:
"That man tried to kill my Daddy." But it's still not personal, this war.
It's still necessary. It's still God's work. It's still about bringing
freedom and democracy to oppressed Iraqi people.
To be a member of the team you must also believe in Absolute Good and
Absolute Evil, and Bush, with a lot of help from his friends, family and
God, is there to tell us which is which. What Bush won't tell us is the
truth about why we're going to war. What is at stake is not an Axis of Evil
- but oil, money and people's lives. Saddam's misfortune is to sit on the
second biggest oilfield in the world. Bush wants it, and who helps him get
it will receive a piece of the cake. And who doesn't, won't.
If Saddam didn't have the oil, he could torture his citizens to his heart's
content. Other leaders do it every day - think Saudi Arabia, think Pakistan,
think Turkey, think Syria, think Egypt.
Baghdad represents no clear and present danger to its neighbours, and none
to the US or Britain. Saddam's weapons of mass destruction, if he's still
got them, will be peanuts by comparison with the stuff Israel or America
could hurl at him at five minutes' notice. What is at stake is not an
imminent military or terrorist threat, but the economic imperative of US
growth. What is at stake is America's need to demonstrate its military power
to all of us - to Europe and Russia and China, and poor mad little North
Korea, as well as the Middle East; to show who rules America at home, and
who is to be ruled by America abroad.
The most charitable interpretation of Tony Blair's part in all this is that
he believed that, by riding the tiger, he could steer it. He can't. Instead,
he gave it a phoney legitimacy, and a smooth voice. Now I fear, the same
tiger has him penned into a corner, and he can't get out.
It is utterly laughable that, at a time when Blair has talked himself
against the ropes, neither of Britain's opposition leaders can lay a glove
on him. But that's Britain's tragedy, as it is America's: as our Governments
spin, lie and lose their credibility, the electorate simply shrugs and looks
the other way. Blair's best chance of personal survival must be that, at the
eleventh hour, world protest and an improbably emboldened UN will force Bush
to put his gun back in his holster unfired. But what happens when the
world's greatest cowboy rides back into town without a tyrant's head to wave
at the boys?
Blair's worst chance is that, with or without the UN, he will drag us into a
war that, if the will to negotiate energetically had ever been there, could
have been avoided; a war that has been no more democratically debated in
Britain than it has in America or at the UN. By doing so, Blair will have
set back our relations with Europe and the Middle East for decades to come.
He will have helped to provoke unforeseeable retaliation, great domestic
unrest, and regional chaos in the Middle East. Welcome to the party of the
ethical foreign policy.
There is a middle way, but it's a tough one: Bush dives in without UN
approval and Blair stays on the bank. Goodbye to the special relationship.
I cringe when I hear my Prime Minister lend his head prefect's sophistries
to this colonialist adventure. His very real anxieties about terror are
shared by all sane men. What he can't explain is how he reconciles a global
assault on al-Qaeda with a territorial assault on Iraq. We are in this war,
if it takes place, to secure the fig leaf of our special relationship, to
grab our share of the oil pot, and because, after all the public
hand-holding in Washington and Camp David, Blair has to show up at the
altar.
"But will we win, Daddy?"
"Of course, child. It will all be over while you're still in bed."
"Why?"
"Because otherwise Mr Bush's voters will get terribly impatient and may
decide not to vote for him."
"But will people be killed, Daddy?"
"Nobody you know, darling. Just foreign people."
"Can I watch it on television?"
"Only if Mr Bush says you can."
"And afterwards, will everything be normal again? Nobody will do anything
horrid any more?"
"Hush child, and go to sleep."
Last Friday a friend of mine in California drove to his local supermarket
with a sticker on his car saying: "Peace is also Patriotic". It was gone by
the time he'd finished shopping.

Dearest All Spiritual Masters, Brothers and Sisters in various parts of the World,

Re: Protest against the Construction of a Commercial District

near Borobudur Temple

Located in the Central Java Province of Indonesia, Borobudur Temple as one of the greatest heritage of Buddhism has become part of the seven wondrous of the world since many     years ago. As a precious heritage of Buddhism built around the 8th century, Borobudur Temple is a sacred place for Buddhist followers who wish to come for self-reflection and contemplation amidst the glory of the Buddha’s teachings seen and perceived. Borobudur Temple is therefore widely known as a very important site for pilgrimage, where tens of thousands of people would particularly choose to gather during the celebration of the Vesakh Day every year.

At the end of the year of 2002, the Governor of the Central Java Province declared the intention of the local government of the Central Java Province to construct a Commercial District near Borobudur Temple. The local government, together with some other parties, would like to allocate approximately IDR 47 billion as the capital to construct a grand Commercial District consisting a three-floor building to accommodate 1,500 art shops, great tourism terminal, and trams to Borobudur Temple. This Commercial District, called as “Pasar Seni Jagad Jawa”, will be constructed on the west side of the border of the 2nd and 3rd zone of the Borobudur area, and therefore will take over all the small art shops run by the local people near Borobudur Temple.

In the middle of the intensifying protests from the art shopkeepers inside the Borobudur complex and some group of architects who put Borobudur Temple into the greatest appreciation, we would like to state that the intention of constructing the Commercial District is primarily based on business wise only. The construction of a grand Commercial District inside the sacred Mandala of Borobudur shall not only endanger the preservation of Borobudur Temple and thus creates a destruction to the temple, but also humiliate the purity of the Borobudur area as a sacred Mandala. We are therefore writing this letter to inform all Spiritual Masters, Brothers and Sisters in various parts of the world to understand the critical situation to the preservation of Borobudur Temple at this time. We humbly ask for your concern and support to cancel the aforementioned plan. As part of your minimal support, please sign the attached (sample) letter of support to save Borobudur on behalf of yourself or your organization and send it through:

Dear…            President of the Republic of Indonesia,

The Governor of the Central Java Province - the Republic of Indonesia

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS)

The recent plan of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to construct a grand Commercial District consisting of a three-floor building to accommodate approximately 1,500 art shops, a great tourism terminal and trams near Borobudur Temple is a humiliation to the sacred site of Buddhism. Borobudur Temple is a holy place and the only greatest civilization of Buddhism as well as one of the seven wondrous of the world. The construction of the Commercial District shall not only endanger the preservation of Borobudur Temple but also reduce the sacredness of the Borobudur area as a sacred Mandala.

We therefore insist you to cancel the plan of constructing the Commercial District near Borobudur Temple and pay attention to the preservation of the temple. We believe you would take any necessary actions to cancel the aforementioned plan as soon as possible.

Thank you for your kind attention.

I was seriously learning the Buddhism practice with a good Teacher.

During my training I made sure that my Teacher had received his knowledge from on high and that knowledge could basically change the mankind life:

- The Teacher has the program for achievment of eternal life in our physical world. There is the possibility to cure such deseases like the AIDS.

- The Teacher quite seriously can control the weather. I think this knowledge could rouse your interest taking into account recent natural disasters.

-The Teacher can influence the world politics, e.g. he could stop armed conflicts in some regions.

If the above-stated is interesting for you, please, answer my letter. We are ready to share our knowledge with you.

Many thanks for this. I received a very callous response from the MSU Buddhist group, & clerical sources, inc. the Buddhist Society, persist in ignoring me. I fail to see how these so-called "traditions" came about in Buddhist lands, if indeed they are "traditions" at all (!), since Buddhist Japan, at least, from 675 until 1868, held strictly to Buddhist teaching re: compassion for animals. If these atrocities are "traditions", they must either have existed prior to the arrival of Buddhism (which means centuries of Buddhist influence availed nothing), or else they are modern phenomena toward which the Buddhist clergy remains silent. Confucianism is also opposed to cruelty, for which I have express quotes. I think, therefore, that the word "tradition" is here a masquerade, behind which hide the thugs and louts who perpetrate these evils and make money therefrom. In any case, Buddhist silence is here infuriating, you must agree.

Dear Anthony.

We share your distress and will raise the subject during the conference
and investigate ways in which Buddhist clergy could help to redress the
situation. There are bound to be some who are sympathetic and efforts
may already have been initiated.

We have to understand the cultural implications and historical reasons
for such barbarity. There must be groups of lay people who are working
for the protection of animals in Korea. How to contact them ? Clergy
could work with them to help educate the public. The Korean Buddhists
Monks and nuns are mainly vegetarian. Such horrifying practices also
exist in China.

In the West, horrible experiments have been and are still being
perpetrated by scientists behavioural psychologists vivisectionists and
the like, on defenceless animals , Some deluded people still believe
that animals do not suffer pain or have the same feelings as so called
( human ) beings.

Boycotting Korea will not help to dispel the ignorance and cruelty of
their treatment of animals, sensitive and sensible discussion may lead
to positive actions and results.

Yours sympathetically

Life is not about getting

Most people's lives are about getting something.  And the truth is, there is nothing to get.  All we have to do is to be.  The being produces the end result.  It is imperative that you understand that the doing and the having part parts of your life are not what determines the quality of your life.  The being aspect is what determines the quality of your life.  Who you are - your conscious perception of your self - controls what is happening to you.

When you focus your attention on solving problems and trying to make things better, something very interesting  happens:  you miss what you already have.  So the only way to find happiness and satisfaction is to enjoy what you already have right now.  Again, I am not saying that you should not set goals or make plans.  What I am saying is that you should enjoy the present moment because this is all you have.  Create for tommorow, but live in and for today.

We only have two choices in life.  The first is to enjoy what we have today, and the second is to have anxiety about what we do not have and focus on tomorrow hoping it will be better.  There are no other choices. Now, remember, getting what you want will not change your life at the being level, so do not let what you have determine who you are.

Otherwise tomorrows's goals will be bankrupt.  If you are tied into getting somewhere or getting something to make you happy, you will be on a treadmill for the rest of  your life.  You will be operating from the hypnotic belief that more is better, and that it is better over there than over here.  Go after what you want, but do enjoy the trip.  Life is a journey, not a destination.  Know that when you get what you want , it will not change who you are at the being level.  Love yourself unconditionally.

Dear Yoons,

I am writing back too. I assume you`ve also seen Jim`s wonderful HOW COULD YOU? Please send it to all your friends, as a tribute to Holly. Jim is wonderful in the work he does, in his sensitivity and in his writing. Have you a copy of PIECES OF MY HEART? We are all attempting to get some action on the part of the Korean and other E. Asian govts. with regard to the daily torture of dogs in those countries (www.koreananimals.org) I am dismayed by the silence of the Buddhist clergy & other Buddhist representatives, who are holding a big conference on Buddhism in Korea in July of this year.

Best wishes,

Anthony Walker.

It is a very moving piece of writing. Holly was a very lucky dog to
have you just as we are lucky to have our dogs. My dog is nearly
fifteen and she did change my life so much. I know one day I will
have to say goodbye to her. And it will never be easy when the time
comes. Unfortunately the time comes often too quickly for us but in a
sense that it is a blessing that we have a longer life span than our
dogs. I hope Holly will be remembered with happiness in your heart
whenever you think of her.

Thanks for your wonderful work. I will distribute the link and the
story to the egroups I belong. She will have a special place in my
heart too.

kind wishes,

Yoon

Dear Yoon,

Many thanks.

I will forward your letter on to Jim. I am sure he will do all he can to help. I have some articles of mine I will try to fish out for you.

The perpetrators of these atrocities, of course, like those in Spain too, hide behind the words "tradition" and "culture." By these means they win the passive support of people considered "progressive", who then tell us: "We must respect traditions" etc. I have been called a racist because of my hatred of cruelty, by both Spaniards, Asians, and "progressives", who are not progressives at all. The word "tradition" has a magical quality for them, as though tradition is good for its own sake.

However, even so, anyone who cares to actually find out something about Buddhism and Confucianism knows that cruelty is abhorrent and is condemned by all the sages. I thought that a condemnation by the Buddhist clergy would have an effect, but they prefer to ignore our appeals. Obviously, they are not so concerned about "merit" and "a favourable rebirth" as they make out!

I ask myself why it is that the countries which practise the worst cruelties today (Asia) have a connection with vegetarianism in the minds of wewsterners and food "experts". Even so, our first efforts have to be directed less at vegetarianism per se than at the practise of TORTURING to death these poor animals.

I will be sending you some of my work, but it will come from my old email address. Please reply, however, to me here, and not at that one. Thanks. Anthony. I have translated HOW COULD YOU? into Provençal, and Jim has it also in French too.

 Yoon Choi <yoons_choi@...> wrote:

Dear Anthony,

Yes I've seen his beautiful story. I love his writing
and I wonder whether he knows too about the tragedy of
dogs and cats in some Asian countries? I wanted an
article against eating dogs from a compassionate view
point so that I can display it in my friends of dogs
site. I wonder whether Jim could write something, even
if it's just a poetry, for the dogs in Asia.

It's so touching that he wanted to spread the story as
a tribute to Holly. I did post them to the egroups I
belong. I hope many people will read it and perhaps
someone may have second thoughts if s/he was going to
give up his/her dog? But when I read it, I was
thinking of the dogs in Korea who were kept as a pet
and then sold to a dog butcher because the owners were
lazy and heartless.

I didn't realise you were also supporting KAPS. Can
you tell me a bit more about yourself and what you do
for the dogs in Asia? I think people who fight for the
same cause should link and help each other. If you
haven't seen my Friends of dogs site yet, it is
http://www.geocities.com/yoons_choi/
There is an articles page where I collect articles
against eating dogs (and statements against eating
dogs from Asian animal groups) as there are so many
misconceptions regarding the issue which seriously
hinders our efforts to save the dogs. Perhaps you
could persuade Jim to write a short piece of writing
for the Asian dogs?

Apart from running the site, I help KAPS with a few
translations and help IAKAUK for various things. I
also run an internet group where we share ideas and
info regarding how we are going to stop this horror.

The below is a link to my article on the subject
published in Labour Animal Welfare Society site.
Please have a look when you have some time.

>>I am dismayed by the silence of the Buddhist clergy

There have been a few Buddhist monks in Korea who
spoke out against dog meat openly. Korean Buddhists
believe that dogs are reincarnation of ancestors. So
they show more objection to dog meat than other meat.
Unfortunately the Western Buddhists do not seem to
share this view. Perhaps these Buddhist
representatives can be persuaded to say something
against eating dogs if we could find courageous
Buddhist monk in Korea who can argue the importance of
speaking against the evil of eating dogs. The best
argument agaisnt eating dogs I ever read was written
by a Korean Buddhist monk. Unfortunately the piece of
writing cannot be found and I have no way of
contacting him.

best wishes,

Yoon

Since the People`s Republic of China is taking up the torturing of dogs in a big way, we pledge to boycott Chinese goods and travel until the vicious dog-meat industry is expelled from China.

(When 100 signatures are obtained, will the last signatory please post the petition to their Chinese Embassy, plus a copy to me at: arthur_cravan@... ? Thanks. PLEASE FORWARD!)

International Solidarity Movement Activist Killed in Gaza by Israeli
Forces
by Starhawk

Today a young woman was killed in Gaza. Young women, but more often
young men, get killed in Gaza and the West Bank every day, and the
world pays no attention. What was different today is that Rachel
Corrie was an American, an activist with the International Solidarity
Movement, the group that I'm here with in occupied Palestine. And her
death is a particularly horrifying example of the cold blooded
dehumanization that characterizes this occupation. Rachel was trying
to stop the demolition of a Palestinian home in Rafah, Gaza According
to the other activists who were with her, she was in dialogue with
the operator in the spirit of nonviolence that is a guiding principle
of the ISM, which provides support for Palestinian civilians and for
nonviolent efforts to bring about justice for Palestine. She climbed
up on the bulldozer, to talk to the soldier in the cockpit. She
climbed down. She sat in front of the bulldozer. The soldier in
control of the huge machine drove it deliberately over her.

Rachel was twenty three years old. I am trying to fathom the mind
that could pull the levers and gun the motor to crush the life out of
her young body. That choice, that deliberate act of murder that ended
her sweet life, seems incomprehensible. But here in occupied
Palestine, that murder seems a logical outgrowth of the system of
total dehumanization that controls every aspect of life, that cannot
see the human being in the Palestinian, that claims to be fighting
terror by institutionalizing it.

Please register your outrage—at Rachel's murder, at the home
demolitions that she was trying to stop, at the illegal occupation
that can only be defended by brutalizing a whole people.
