Even yough you may support Governor Kernan's re-election effort, this
demonstration against a new I-69 insterstate will let him know that even
his supporters are opposed to this waste of money, and natural habitats and
resources. Come show your opposition to the proposed construction of a new
I-69 through southern Indiana. Peace, J. Carrigan

LIVE ON STAGE!  THE PREMIER PERFORMANCE OF FIFTEEN FORTY EIGHT, THE DYNAMIC NEW PRODUCTION OF THE PAT MCGEEVER PRODUCTION COMPANY STARRING NANCY HOLLE AS CHLORINE  JAY CARRIGAN AS JIM SNITCH, AND GARY ANTELEPT AS THE MOST REV. DICKENS.   Seriously, it's a wonderful production that will be performed by us amateurs on Saturday but will be done more seriously and we hope, with great effect for the community by the ACT-OUT players of IUPUI for the eight public performances.  Come see the preview!  \

John Gibson's mother died last week so he will not be at this month's meeting.  May she rest in peace.

The Legislative Committee and the New Initiatives Committee will  have reports.  Hope to see you tomorrow at the Unleavened Bread Cafe, 30th and Central, 10am.   Peace,   J. Carrigan

Sorry to be so late getting this out.  Tomorrow's meeting is at 10am, Unleavened Bread Cafe at 30th and Central.

The Legislative Committee will meet at the same place at 8:30am.

The [plan for this meeting is to solidify the 2004 agenda with the possible addition of a couple of committees (one to expand the scope of Community Faith and Labor Coalition to other areas where an opportunity exists to improve the lives of the working poor).

Please come and help work out these important decisions!

Plans are also under way for a celebration to honor Councilor Elwood Black who is now retired from the city council where he served the working poor for many years and was co-sponsor with Joanne Sanders of the Living Wage legislation that CFLC proposed in 2002.

Lots of opportunities exist to take a more active role in the campaign for just wages for workers. Come be part of the "largest grassroots campaign for justice in this country since civil rights!"      Peace,     J. Carrigan

What a great group of people. I left the meeting Saturday thinking exactly
that. We're clicking folks and we're clicking together and it's a
wonderful experience being part of this movement. I didn't even know about
your generosity in helping send Shirley to the Acorn meeting. I'm having
the same really happy feelings I had on Saturday.
Thanks to all who gave as well as to those who would have if they could.
Peace, J. Carrigan

Just a reminder of this Saturday's meeting at the Unleavened Bread Cafe, 310th and Central at 10am.   Among other things new and exciting:
    1. A script for next year's Spirit and Place event presented by Pat McGeever
    2. A Living Wage song composed especially for Indianapolis
    3. A report by the Education committee on the Indianapolis U. Teach-In
    4. A report by  the legislation committee on interviewing and lobbying city councilors
    5. Mildred Wilkins presentation on predatory lending.
Come to an important meeing of an important social justice movement in Indianapolis!

Hi everyone!
The January meeting of the Living Wage Coalition will be at 10:00am this
coming Saturday at the Unleavened Bread Cafe, 30th and Central. Being
the first meeting of the year, we will be roughing out the entire year,
building on the experience and success of previous years. Who knows,
this may be the year that a true living wage becomes a reality in
Indianapolis. The last time we submitted legislation we didn't do as
well as we hoped, but in the end we did better than we'd come to expect.

We'll also be talking about an LW campaign at IUPUI and a recent
generous donation to help accomplish our purpose. So let's rub our
eyes, roll up our sleeves and get back to work for the families whose
workers are not being paid a living wage in Indianapolis. Peace, J.

Hi all.
I'm forwarding this not to emulate Grinch but as a jind of reality
check, now that W's approval ratings have shot from 54% to 63% after the
capture of Hussein. All that really accomplished was that certain
favored groups who were already prospering from this immoral
administration are now prospering more while the average citizen
experiences ever greater desperation in housing and feeding her
family.

This coning Saturday, Dec 6th is the last meeting of the year of
Community Faith and Labor Coalition. The city-county council elections
are over (though not finalized) and so we'll start looking forward to
possible legislation in 2004. We've learned a lot from last year's
experience and so 2004 is a good time to apply it.

We're expecting a report on progress with the IUPUI project from Jim
Polly, and also a report from Pat McGeever on his productions of
'Working Hard, Living Poor", the very successful Spirit and Place
event.

Please bring your checkbooks as we want to make a sizeable donation to a
scholarship fund which is planned in honor of and rememberance of Dale
Hathaway. Dale arranged and paid for our website just shortly before he
left for Italy where he passed away.

Come one come all. We've had a rest. Now's the time to get a jump on
the New Year. Peace, J.

Dear everybody,
Whatever your political persuasion, I think you'll be appalled to see
the amount of trust that is being placed in a private, publicly traded
corporation, The Diebold Co. which reportedly has made it felony to
examine the voting machines for accuracy and there is no paper trail to
check. Seems to me that the legitimacy of the vote hangs in the
balance. J. Carrigan

Op-Ed Columnist: Hack the Vote

December 2, 2003
  By PAUL KRUGMAN

Inviting Bush supporters to a fund-raiser, the host wrote,
"I am committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes
to the president next year." No surprise there. But Walden
O'Dell - who says that he wasn't talking about his business
operations - happens to be the chief executive of Diebold
Inc., whose touch-screen voting machines are in
increasingly widespread use across the United States.

For example, Georgia - where Republicans scored spectacular
upset victories in the 2002 midterm elections - relies
exclusively on Diebold machines. To be clear, though there
were many anomalies in that 2002 vote, there is no evidence
that the machines miscounted. But there is also no evidence
that the machines counted correctly. You see, Diebold
machines leave no paper trail.

Representative Rush Holt of New Jersey, who has introduced
a bill requiring that digital voting machines leave a paper
trail and that their software be available for public
inspection, is occasionally told that systems lacking these
safeguards haven't caused problems. "How do you know?" he
asks.

What we do know about Diebold does not inspire confidence.
The details are technical, but they add up to a picture of
a company that was, at the very least, extremely sloppy
about security, and may have been trying to cover up
product defects.

Early this year Bev Harris, who is writing a book on voting
machines, found Diebold software - which the company
refuses to make available for public inspection, on the
grounds that it's proprietary - on an unprotected server,
where anyone could download it. (The software was in a
folder titled "rob-Georgia.zip.") The server was used by
employees of Diebold Election Systems to update software on
its machines. This in itself was an incredible breach of
security, offering someone who wanted to hack into the
machines both the information and the opportunity to do so.

An analysis of Diebold software by researchers at Johns
Hopkins and Rice Universities found it both unreliable and
subject to abuse. A later report commissioned by the state
of Maryland apparently reached similar conclusions. (It's
hard to be sure because the state released only a heavily
redacted version.)

Meanwhile, leaked internal Diebold e-mail suggests that
corporate officials knew their system was flawed, and
circumvented tests that would have revealed these problems.
The company hasn't contested the authenticity of these
documents; instead, it has engaged in legal actions to
prevent their dissemination.

Why isn't this front-page news? In October, a British
newspaper, The Independent, ran a hair-raising
investigative report on U.S. touch-screen voting. But while
the mainstream press has reported the basics, the Diebold
affair has been treated as a technology or business story -
not as a potential political scandal.

This diffidence recalls the treatment of other voting
issues, like the Florida "felon purge" that inappropriately
prevented many citizens from voting in the 2000
presidential election. The attitude seems to be that
questions about the integrity of vote counts are divisive
at best, paranoid at worst. Even reform advocates like Mr.
Holt make a point of dissociating themselves from
"conspiracy theories." Instead, they focus on legislation
to prevent future abuses.

But there's nothing paranoid about suggesting that
political operatives, given the opportunity, might engage
in dirty tricks. Indeed, given the intensity of
partisanship these days, one suspects that small dirty
tricks are common. For example, Orrin Hatch, the chairman
of the Senate Judiciary Committee, recently announced that
one of his aides had improperly accessed sensitive
Democratic computer files that were leaked to the press.

This admission - contradicting an earlier declaration by
Senator Hatch that his staff had been cleared of
culpability - came on the same day that the Senate police
announced that they were hiring a counterespionage expert
to investigate the theft. Republican members of the
committee have demanded that the expert investigate only
how those specific documents were leaked, not whether any
other breaches took place. I wonder why.

The point is that you don't have to believe in a central
conspiracy to worry that partisans will take advantage of
an insecure, unverifiable voting system to manipulate
election results. Why expose them to temptation?

I'll discuss what to do in a future column. But let's be
clear: the credibility of U.S. democracy may be at stake.

Hope everyone can make at least one as Pat says. Peace.
Hi,

I hope as many of you as possible are planning to attend one or more
presentations of WORKING Hard, Living POOR this weekend. To that end, here are
some directions to each of the venues.

City Market (12-1 Friday 14th [short version]): We'll be upstairs in the main
hall of the market. Take the stairway up in the southeast corner of the hall.
Good idea to come early so you have time to park and get a seat before the
noontime rush begins.

Martin University (7:30-9:00 Friday 14th): Go to Sherman and 21st, and from
there go west one block. Parking lot is on your leftt, and coming out of it
you enter the building you're facing, by the door next to the huge globe.
Plenty of space and seating for this one.

North United Methodist Church (7:30-9:00 Saturday 15th): At 38th and Meridian,
park in the church lot and enter the building from the west side. Go down the
stairs and turn left. Seating for about 60.

We have volunteers to tape the NUMC show and maybe the City Market. Could use
someone (with camera; I'll have tapes) for Martin and a backup for the Market.

Before showtime, we could still use some more folks to direct people to the
venue (I have one large sign) and to pass out programs.

During the shows, we'll need folks to pass the hat for contributions and signup
sheets for the followup discussions.

We're almost there! Thanks for all your support.

Pat

Hi Everyone:

The Living Wage meeting is this Saturday, October 4, 10am at The
Unleavened Bread Cafe.

Topics will include:
     1. a report from the legsilatve committee on voter registration
efforts and plans to support candidates friendly to propopsed
legislation in 2004.

     2. a report from Jim Polly on his conversations with Nancy Chism of
IUPUI

     3. a brief look at the National Training Conference at ACORN to be
held a weekend in November. John Gibson and I attended a couple of
years ago and found it very rewarding. Anyone willing to assume a
leadership role in next year's campaign to get legislation passed would
benefit greatly from this conference. Scholarships are available.

     4. The Earth Charter Summit, Saturday October 11 at the
Unitarian-Universalist Church at 615 W. 43rd St. from 10am to 4pm. The
Ark of Hope will be featured at the Summit which will promote the
internationally acclaimed Earth Charter, authored by people from every
continent. Come and renew your hope in the future.

     5. The crowning event of Saturday's meeting will be some grassroots
work to register people to vote in November's city elections. You can
be a grassroot too and help shape Indianpolis' future! Peace+ J.

A Hungarian sculptor, Agnes Denes, who has created many works on the
theme of Peace, is speaking at the old Herron School of Art, 16th and
Penn at 6pm this evening.

Some folks are planning to suggest that one of the gardens at the Indpls
Museum of Art be dedicated to the theme of Peace. They believe that a
good turnout at tonight's
talk by Ms. Agnes will help toward that cause. Please come if you can.

About the Michael Moore tickets debacle, that is what it has turned
into. I apologize to anyone I promised tickets to. On Friday I'd been
told I could get at least 20 tickets but when I called my supplier on
Monday, she said she'd let me know if there were ANY available. She
hasn't called. The consolation prize is that Moore's talk will be shown
on closed circuit TV in the Krannert Room of Clowes and possibly other
rooms if need be, so if you come, you will likely be able to see and
hear Michael, though maybe not in person.
Again, I apologize to anyone who might have gone to Clowes and gotten
tickets themselves. There just are no more to be had. ( : > ( J.

Just passing it on. J.

Hi everyone,

The Indianapolis City-County Council has 29 members, seven of whom are women.  Earlier this year, women in political circles (regardless of party) were pleased to see the first woman named as majority leader and vice-president of the council.  Historically, the majority leader has held the position of vice-president of the council.

This week, many of us were dismayed to see that eight months after being named majority leader and vice-president, Beulah Coughenour was removed from that position. She will remain vice-president of the council.  More troubling is the fact that she was replaced by Curt Coonrod.  I believe this sends a message to women and people of diverse backgrounds that it's more "...business as usual..." for the Indianapolis Council.

There are two attachments accompanying this email.  The first is a copy of a Press Release we sent out today.  The second is a copy of a recent news article concerning Councilor Coonrod.  Please distribute this email to all your contacts.

Sorry to be so late. J.
See Forwarded Message -- Saturday's walk will be in the Riverside Park area,
meeting at 30th and Riverside at 11:00AM. Jay -- please forward announcement of
voter registration activities for this Saturday to larger Living Wage e-mail
list.

Sorry that I couldn't get Andrea's message from last week to you -- she didn't
get it out until Thursday evening -- I was in Lansing, Michigan at the time, and
in the Blackout.

I got Jay's your message on the Labor Day Parade -- we also made a request to
Bob Cadwell for tabling space. As I mentioned in my last e-mail, we can table
literature, voter registration and whatever, but we need to provide our own
table and chair(s). Has this been discussed since last we met?

Also, are we still going to do a phone bank to call our contact list? If so, is
the 25th still on? Do Nancy or I need to recontact Lettie?

HOPE TO SEE YOU SATURDAY --
                             Solidarity!

There are several things I want to add to my last message:

1. The PARADE will be on SAturday, Aug. 30. Will volunteers who want to
help please call me at 283-2273 or email their intentions. This is a
good opportunity to keep the ball rolling. We need about 25 people, 6
to pass out water, 6 to dress or carry props which clearly mark them as
plumbers, bakers, teachers, maintenance people etc. If you have such a
prop, bring it along and join the parade.

2. HOUSING MATTERS I'm attaching a proposal sent to me by Mildred
Wilkins, a member of Community Faith and Labor Coalition and founder of
a new organization to cut down on the number of foreclosures in which
Indianapolis ranks first! Please make the calls to the mayor's office
to support her proposal that two hours a week be dedicated to housing
and foreclosure matters on the city TV station for a year. Cost is
$00.00 Please read her proposal. If you want more information, Mildred
will be helping pass out water at the Labor Day Parade.

3. MICHAEL MOORE -- FREE TICKETS TO SEE MICHAEL MOORE LIVE AT CLOWES
ON OCT. 13!!! Tickets become available on Sept 5. Four tickets are
allowed per person. Butler students can start picking theirs up Aug.
29. For more info call Clowes Hall at 940-6444 after 10am M-F. (See it
always pays to read announcments all the way to the end.)

4. Remember the Living Wage meeting Saturday, September 6, 10am at the
Unleavened Bread Cafe, 30th and Central.
Hi Jay,

Got your email and I will plan on volunteering to help with the water.  I can march very far.

I am sending over 3 emails.  This is the most urgent one.  Please read and call the Mayor's office ASAP if this is something you can support.  Pass on to others and ask them to do likewise.  He is expected to decide soon.

Thanks

Hi Everybody!
Hope everyone is refreshed after vacation and kids are or soon will be
back in school! : > 0)

First the parade: We'd like to have 10 to 15 people holding or
darrying signs that say "We make a living wage, so should you !" We'd
also like to have 6 coalition members dressed as workers and 6 more
helping Democratic Superior Court Judges handing out water. Who knows
when you may need a good reference with one of them. That makes about
25 people, so don't worry about being turned away when you email to
volunteer. The parade steps off at 11am so please get there by10:30,
especially those helping the judges with water as you'll be at Monument
Circle. We'll meet at North and Penn and will ride you down to the
Circle.

                              ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! ALERT!

HAS ANYONE SEEN OUR LIVING WAGE BANNER?? LAST TIME WE KNEW WHERE IT WAS
WAS LAST YEAR'S LBOR DAY PARADE. WE'RE CONCERNED THE CHAMBER MAY HAVE
GOTTEN IT. SERIOUSLY, IF ANYONE SAW IT AND TOOK IT HOME WITH THEM
PLEASE LET US KNOW ASAP AS WE'RE GOING TO ORDER ANOTHER ONE IF WE CAN'T
FIND IT.

SEPTEMBER 6 MEETING

As suggested at the August meeting, We've asked Jeanne Farah who did
such a wonderful job at our Activist Camp several weeks ago, to come and
speak to CFLC at our regular meeting. She'll talk about how social
change happens and the steps in achieving change. I found her
presentation very helpful and think you will too. The meeting will be
at the usual place and time, Unleavened Bread Cafe, 30th and Central at
10am Saturday, September 6.

Other items on the agenda will be a report from the education committee
on a meeting with the head of the Sociology Dept at IUPUI, a report from
the legislative committee on the city council campaign, and a report
from the mobilization committee on the Labor Day Parade.

Come be an active participant in a thriving movement!. J. Carrigan

Hi again from indylivingwage central!
Now that I know how to put messages on the website, I'm getting cocky.

Specaking of which, I just this morning posted a letter written by
Charlotte Templin of the legislative committee that appeared in last
Sunday's Star on healthy families and the need for a living wage. Check
it out at www.indylivingwage.org or in the Star, Focus Section for July
27.

Saturday's meeting will feature reports from the three committees,
education, mobilization and legislative. Plans are going forward to
work on the campaigns of various city council candidates. The Education
Committee chair, Shirley Grigsby is meeting with the head of IUPUI's
Social Work Dept. to discuss various matters and contact has been
re-established with Nancy Chism, vice chancellor at IUPUI to meet to
work out a service learning program for IUPUI students.

The Mobilization Committee will report on plans for the Labor Day
Parade and how the Living Wage Campaign can interest more mainline
citizens in the effort to bring about fair wages for working families.

The Earth Charter Initiative held a Social Action Leadership Camp for 22
people this past weekend which was excellent and gave us some ideas of
how we might proceed somewhat differently than in the past in the hope
of not bloodying our heads against brick walls so much.

The meeting will be usual place and time, Unleavened Bread Cafe, 30th
and Central, 10am. Please come prepared to join the discussion and lend
a hand in the effort. Peace, J. Carrigan

Hi everyone,
Hope you're all having a great summer and are taking a few days of
mental vacation from the unpleasant realities of the federal, state
and local state of things even if you're not getting away physically.

ACORN now has an office in Indianapolis staffed by Indianapolis native
Kate Van Winkle. It's located at 1802 W. Washington St. in a
Presbyteraian Church. She has been invited to attend Saturday's
meeting.

Pat McGeever continues to work on Spirit and Place presentations of
extemporaneous vignettes (ok, Pat?) performed by IUPUI's ACT OUT group
of players. There will be three presentations. Funds are still
needed to help finance this project which will portray real life
situations of people who work for poverty wages. Pat has asked for
donations of $50 from Living Wage members; I'm sure he would not turn
down lesser or greater amounts.

The legislative committee continues its plans to support city council
candidates who might favor new living wage legislation in 2004. They
need all the help they can get making telephone calls to find folks
willing to help those candidates in their campaigns.

We have a going organizations with a couple of awards to prove it.
Living Wage really is becoming a household "word" in Indianapolis.
Let's keep it going despite the heat. Some full time workers in Indy
can't even afford a fan! Peace, J. Carrigan

I'm attaching a document produced by the moderator of the Legislative
Committee, Brad Lorton, showing in broad strokes where the Community
Faith and Labor Coalition needs to concentrate its efforts in order to
produce the group of city councilors that offers the best hope for
passing living wage legislation in 2004. This is only the first step
of many in what promises to be a very busy year for the coalition and
the year that will make or break our 2004 legislation. Please be
ready to volunteer to assist the candidates designated by the
legislative committee as most promising in achieving our goal of living

The legislative committee will work closely with the education and
