DEAR COMMUNITY,

Start the New Year With An Open Heart

The New Year often brings new resolutions - lists of them. With the best of
intentions we strive to be a better parent, a better partner, a better worker,
a better friend... the list goes on. Yet it often falls apart quickly...
there's not enough time, our kids push our buttons... there's always a reason
for not keeping on track. What if we didn't start the year with the pressure of
resolutions? How about we throw away those lists and focus on something simple
and basic, yet life-affirming and self-caring. Imagine how opening your heart
can change... well just about everything.

Think about how you'd approach your family, your co-workers, your partner, even
yourself if you took a little time to nurture YOU and allow your heart to open.
How would your life be different? Better? More satisifying? Imagine, like the
picture above, where an open-heart could lead you. Where would you want it to?

There's no time like the present so I'd like to share this short heart-centered
and heart-opening meditation. You can read the script to yourself, create your
own recording, or have a friend or partner read it to you. Remember to read
slowly with pauses between phrases and sentences. Please let me know your
experiences working with it.

"Allow your eyes to gently close. Find a comfortable position. Be aware of your
breathing and of the air going into your nose, down into your belly, and then
out again through your nose. Let yourself find a peaceful rhythm breathing in
and out slowly. One... two... three... With each breath allow your body to
become more and more relaxed.

"Let's breathe in even slower - to the count of one... two... three... four.
Breathe out just as slowly. One... two... three... four. Take some time to
practice sending your breath two to three inches below your navel.

"Now be aware of your chest and your heart. Bring your attention to your Heart
Center in the middle of your chest. Imagine it softly beating, and filling with
love and wisdom.

"Continue to breath slowly, focusing on your Heart Center. You may place your
hand over your Heart Center, allowing yourself to be comforted. As you breathe,
put your awareness there. You can keep your hand over your Heart for as long as
you want.... as long as you need some extra comfort and self-love.

"When you're ready, notice if any thoughts... pictures... music... or messages
come from your Heart - from your Heart's wisdom... Ask your Heart what message
it has for you today. Listen. Trust them. Trust yourself. You can even have a
conversation with your Heart and ask anything you want to know. Take your time.

"When you're ready, be aware of your breathing, your body, your heart remaining
open, and, remembering everything, slowly return."

Although many of the guided meditations I share with you can be found in my
book, one very similar to this was especially created for [2][3]The Cave of
Great Wisdom (Parent Support) CD. You can find it on Track 2. You might also
enjoy Track 3, which continues to connect you with your heart's wisdom and
receive the appreciation you deserve. For more info and if you're interested in
purchasing go [4]here.

.

Learn more about how you can help the children in your life open their heart,
trust their intuition, and develop their inner positive resources. Read The
Power of Your Child's Imagination: How to Transform Stress and Anxiety into Joy
and Success (Perigee/Penguin).

THE WORRY SOLUTION:

Using Breakthrough Brain Science to Turn Stress and Anxiety into Confidence and
Happiness

Martin Rossman M.D.

Do you sometimes have trouble turning your mind off at the end of a stressful
day? Do you worry too much, or suffer from high levels of anxiety or stress? Do
you sometimes feel like your life is out of control?

You are not alone. Hundreds of millions of other people just like you suffer
from out of control worry and stress. Unrelieved stress is a significant risk
factor for heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, autoimmune disease,
fibromyalgia, chronic pain symptoms, irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia and
asthma, among many other illnesses too numerous to name.

The good news is that a unique combination of brain science and mind/body
processes can help you greatly reduce all of these risks. Do yourself a favor
and read The Worry Solution by mind/body expert and dear colleague of mine,
Martin Rossman MD.

Can you even imagine the difference in your life if you didn't need to worry so
much? For more info, purchase and receive free gifts...

DEAR COMMUNITY,

Valentine's Day... Everyone Deserves to be Happy

What better way to help a child find happiness than to start within... being
her own best friend. When your child has a best friend inside, she can be happy
no matter what storms of life are outside. With a strong foundation of
self-love and self-acceptance, kids learn to value their own company and
integrity over just fitting in.They realize they can nurture and depend on
themselves.

Like six-year-old Chloe who ran from the playground because she felt excluded
and believed she had no friends. She imagined encountering a young wizard,
Sparkle. who gifted her with a heart-shaped crystal to love herself even if her
friends snubbed her, and a star crystal to feel like a star no matter what. Or
11-year-old Luke who had such a low opinion of himself he thought he didn't
deserve anything good and felt responsible to make everyone else except himself
happy. He visited The Great Wisdom Library and received a perfect book, "How to
Love Yourself." The first chapter? "Believe in yourself!"

Here are six imagination tips to develop self-love, meet that best friend
within, and invite happiness to your side:

Practice Forgiveness: Encourage your child to forgive himself as well as
others. Have him imagine what forgiveness looks like, or sounds like. Is it a
color, a feeling, a character, music? He can ask,"What do I need to do or
understand before I can forgive... my parents, my friend, myself?" Have him
bring whatever he imagines into his Heart and notice what happens.

Harness Paper Power: Suggest he put his negative views - his dark feelings and
thoughts - on paper. Drawing and writing can be cathartic, a release of your
child's angst. Or perhaps he'd prefer to move out his feelings - hip hop or
ballet - whatever appeals to him. Once he can let go of his negativity, it will
be easier to create the positive.

Use Gifts Wisely: Allow your child or teen to ask for help and use whatever
Gifts he receives from his inner guides (animal friend, wizard, wise person).
Some kids have been given special glasses to see the bright side, precious
stones to remind them how special they are, and magic mirrors to show them
their real beauty.

Play with Color: Have him experiment with the wonder of color. See how
breathing different colors in and out alters his gloomly feelings - from red
anger to blue calm, black frustration to lavender love, from a closed heart to
an open one.

Talk to Yourself Inside - Nicely: Sometimes we have to practice talking
positively about ourselves and others. Have your child think of one or two nice
things to say about himself, family members, and friends. Make an ongoing list
and stick it on your fridge as a reminder.

Praise Progress, Not Perfection: Kids can mistakenly berate themselves for
anything less than perfecdt. Help your child recognize small victories and how
far he's come on his road to happiness. By focusing on his efforts and
improvements, success follows success.

* * * * *

Imagination offers one path to help kids connect with their inner best friend,
step into their personal power, and take responsibility to bring happiness into
their lives. I'd love to hear your stories and what works best for yours.

Subject: How 2010 year ended for DNA Facebook group
astynaz
Send Email Send Email

Developmental Neurodiversity Association (DNA) facebook group ended the year
with 1,777 members since its creation on June 3, 2010. It went past its goal of
1,000 members for the end of year.

The whole point behind Developmental Neurodiversity Association (DNA) is that a
different mind is not a deficient mind. It's not about promoting a
disability, handicap,or something that is wrong and broken with the person.

It is for people who have genetic neurodivergence. That's why made the name the
way it is with DNA as its acronym, suggesting "genetic"

It is not made for people have acquired neurodiverent symptoms through things
like brain damage, toxins, nutritional deficiencies, and other things.

The problem is that they lump genetic neurodivergence and acquired
neurodivergence together and believe that they have the same causes and are
looked and treated the same.
That goes with both conventional and alternative medical views of these
neurodivergent conditions.
Both conventional and alternative health practitioners don't consider that
neurodivergence is connected to strengths and not just weaknesses.

DNA was made for people who fit with what is called twice/dual exceptional
(gifted and disabled). I fit with twice/dual exceptional. I know what it's like
to viewed as
intellectually handicapped at points in my life and as gifted in other points of
my life because of the paradox nature of being twice/dual exceptional with my
Dyslexia,Dyspraxia,ADHD. Many people with neurodivergent conditions fit with the
twice/dual exceptional. They get lumped with others that have acquired
neurodivergence.

Dr. Temple Grandin has genetic autism, and she believes that autism can be
caused by environmental insults interacting with genetics. She believes that's a
totally different form of autism than what she and many of her fellow autistics
have. It's not fair that genetic autistics are viewed the same way as acquired
autistics.

I acknowledge the genetic neurodivergence for the sake of the neurodiversity
community, but I also acknowledge acquired neurodivergence for the sake of the
biomed community.

Neurodiversity community doesn't want genetic neurodivergence to be viewed as
something wrong and needs to be fixed, and the biomed community doesn't want
acquired neurodivergence to be viewed as something that's not wrong and doesn't
need to be fixed.

I am looking forward to what's in store for DNA this year.

Dear psychics, psychic families, educators and service providers,

This evening, I saw two gifted children make a great connection, and I'm
inspired to move forward with plans for psychic camps here in San Diego, CA, via
Moon Metaphysics.  I'd like to begin with a couple of small, day-camps this
spring and summer.

As I begin to plan logistics, I'd love your input:

1.  Parents, what types of classes and activities would serve you best?  Would
you prefer day classes only, or would some evening classes be acceptable?  Are
you available for 2-4-hour day drop-offs and pick-ups?  Are you available to be
a chaperon or aid?  Would you be willing to pay a bit more and provide
transportation for at least one overnight camping trip?  Would you prefer a
single cost that includes materials and meals, or separate fees and options?

2.  Educators and specialists, do you have materials and courses you would like
to share?  Are your materials and offerings for children, parents or both?  Do
you offer a group or business rate?  What are your availabilities?  Where are
you located (and are you willing to provide your own transportation and housing,
or will you require housing)?  NB:  Please send reference materials, CVs, etc.
via attachment as a response to this message.

3.  Location and service providers, what are your group rates, reservation
deadlines, and group-number limits?  Do you provide group or business rates?
Would you donate or loan materials (i.e. stones/crystals, hand boilers, Tarot
cards, playing cards, books, journals, smudge sticks, music-therapy instruments)
in exchange for advertising?  What are your restrictions regarding advertising
at your location?  Please send information and forms via attachment as a
response to this message.  Alternately, please contact me at the desk number
below to FAX.

Thank you, and I'll look forward to your responses!

DEAR COMMUNITY,

Help Support Kids Develop Better Friendships

"Be kind to other people and they will treat you like you want."

Andy, age six

I'm getting a lot of flack about friends lately. Kids are complaining they
don't have any. Parents are concerned their children don't have enough or have
too many disagreements with the ones they do have. Everyone is asking for help.

All this reminds me of seven-year-old Freddie. Every day after school he
complained: "The girls are bossy." "The boys pick on me." True, but underneath
Freddie wanted his peers to do everything his way. He wouldn't play by the
rules. He needed to always win - the game, the sticker for the day, his
teacher's attention - and this alienated the other kids. Friendships vanished.

Friendships are important for children and teens. Kids who have them feel good
about themselves, are more confident, do better in school, and are more likely
to grow into well-adjusted adults. Solitude can lead to isolation, depression,
poor health and discipline problems. A child's behavior is a common reason for
friendship issues. Bossy, disruptive, or self-centered kids annoy their
classmates. It's not fun to play with those who don't share or follow rules, or
who explode when things don't go their way. Shyness and insecurity can also
limit a child's friendship circle - as can being different from others, or
changes such as a new class or school. Whatever the cause, friendship worries
signal a need for extra support and understanding.

The Nine Tools can help get to the bottom of the problem and open options. Your
child's imagination is ready to help. Freddie's certainly was. All we needed to
do was ask. It took awhile, but he learned that when you're nice to others,
they are kinder to you. These six tips can help you support your child develop
better friendships:

Be a Caring Coach: Make sure you're on the same team, even when you think your
child is wrong. It's easy to want to correct your child when you see things so
clearly from an adult perspective. But this is not about blame; it's about
creating a new beginning. Stay out of the right/wrong discussion; it will only
cause power struggles. Instead, let your child know you believe he can make
(more, better) friends. When he feels you on his side, he'll be more open to
imagination suggestions - and change.

Imagine Simplicity: Invite him to share his peer problem with you. Depending on
his age, guide him to explore his feelings with simple or sophisticated
emotional language. Then ask him to imagine how he'd like it to be. Encourage
him to draw or write about present and future possibilities. Once he has a
vision you can help him take the steps to reach his goal. Whatever kids
visualize and mentally rehearse, they are more likely to actualize in life.

Call on Man's Best Friend: Animal assistance - from an imaginary Animal Friend
- dog, cat, jaguar, or ladybug - can provide wise advice and fun Gifts that
shed light on the friend clash or teach him how to create better friendships.
Like Freddie, whose imaginary dog Pugg gave him a silver star medallion to
wear: "When you blow on the star, it gives you power to speak nicely."

Consider Different Scenarios: Discuss how to make amends with problem friends
or reach out to new ones. Role-play together or write a practice script. How
would he like his "friendship show" to go? What does the final act look like?

Re-frame the Games: When a child is too competitive, others tire of playing
with him. As your child hones his friendship skills, promote cooperation by
changing focus. Asking "Who came in first?" or "What was the score?"
inadvertently fuels competition. Instead, inquire whether he had fun, or if the
team worked well together. You don't have to ignore who won; just don't make it
top priority; he'll learn that games can be more than just winning.

List of Friends: Imagining and making a list of friends is a handy skill. When
one pal can't play - whether he's unavailable or just doesn't want to - other
choices exist. It's a good idea to remember this on the playground and in
planning after school or weekend activities.

* * * * *

Your child's imagination is a great partner for solving friendship challenges.
It gives a clear picture of her struggle and a safe place to practice healthier
responses. Remember, it's the quality of the friendship, not the quantity, that
matters. Not what kind of friends she has, but what kind of friend she is.

Please share your child's friendship stories.... DrReznick@....

and Anxiety into Joy and Success.

DEAR COMMUNITY,

Catastrophe in Japan:

Helping Children Cope and Comprehend

"First it was this monster earthquake, followed quickly by the tsunami. Now
there's the possibilitiy of nuclear disaster. Normally the effects of a trauma
are related to how far away one is. But with TV bringing intense images right
into our homes 24/7, we are all affected - our children even more so."

I've written on and given interviews about too many variations of this topic
over the last several years. Starting with the [2]1994 Northridge earthquake in
Los Angeles, through the[3] [4]LA riots following the Rodney King verdict, the
horror of[5] 9/11, over to Katrina, the [6]Haiti devastation, the [7]Chilean
minors, and more. And each time I believe it's important to remind ourselves
how to help our children. Here my latest version continues, published in the
[8]Huffington Post.....

The emotional effects of watching such a catastrophe can be tremendous.
Children and teens can feel especially helpless when they see these images of
the devastation, including homeless and injured Japanese children and orphans
on the news. Kids absorb worry and sadness from their parents, or from
classmates who have family ties in Japan.

One of the difficulties experienced by parents is that they have not had
adequate time to deal with their own reactions when they are called upon to
deal with the impact on their children.

Emotional reactions vary in nature and severity from child to child. Their
responses to a disaster are determined by age, previous experiences,
temperament and personality, as well as the immediacy of the disaster to their
own lives.

If you know a child who is showing signs of stress, worry or fear that may be
related to the Japanese earthquake and its aftermath - such as stomachaches,
sleeplessness, bedwetting, or moodiness - I'd like to offer some ideas about
how to help kids comprehend and deal with such a catastrophe.

Please read the rest of my [9]Huffington Post article for:

* Tips to Help a Child Cope

* How Kids Can Help Japan Right Now

and

* How Kids Can Help When The Crisis Has Calmed, But Donations Are Still Needed

Please share your thoughts and children's experiences. You can add your
comments at the end of this [10]Huffington Post article.

Could anyone help recommend an online high school course? Has anyone had
experience with Global Village? I'm lookig for something affordable for this
semmester - under $1,500 per semmester,if possible. I've spent days on the
internet but find some of the websites are not very well put together and some
schools are not legitimate.

I think some indigo children could really benifit from some of the online
resources, but my finances are limiting me at the moment.

DEAR COMMUNITY,

Peace Begins at Home: 6 Tips for Siblings

"Haven't we evolved and learned that war is not an
answer?"
Alex, age 15

The state of the world has been on the mind of so many of the families I work
with. Too many wars, too much aggression, too much not caring about each other
and the planet. It's created an underlying anxiety even for the youngest kids
who are exposed to the news in their living rooms. One tense teen asked,
"Haven't we evolved and learned that war is not an answer?" In his mind, it's
hard to fight someone who doesn't want to fight you back, so if everyone would
decide not to fight, war could end.

Although we may not be able to do anything about what's happening acros the
globe, surely we can do something about what's right in front of us. Peace can
begin at home - starting with brothers and sisters.

Like nine-year-old Lars. All he wanted from his big brother was peace. He hated
arguing over video games and TV, and was hurt and angry at the older one's
constant teasing. Or six-year-old Taylor's jealousy of her three-year-old
brother. Although she longed for a sibling, it was different once Riley was
born. Taylor flip-flopped between loving hugs and dangerous squeezing.

Kids tell me they want positive interactions with their siblings. But buttons
get pushed, defenses go up, and friction abounds. We all play a crucial role.
Cooperation, empathy, kindness, fair play, and self-control don't always come
naturally to children; they are skills taught through practice, just like
making a bed and riding a bike.

If you want to encourage kindness and generosity, let kids see yours. To foster
self-control, watch how you respond to frustration and anger. Each conflict is
a learning opportunity and a child's imagination makes a great study partner.
Even ten-year-old Melody, who couldn't speak up to her big bossy sister,
conjured up an imaginary Wizard who coached her to say, "No" in a strong and
clear voice.

Consider these 6 tips to squelch sibling squabbles and develop more loving
connections...

DEAR COMMUNITY,

5 Tips to Turn The Tide:

Parents and Kids Living Together Lovingly

Eleven-year-old Grace had always been a challenge, but the last two years
everything had become a struggle with her parents. Grace wanted more freedom;
Mom needed to keep a watchful eye. Grace thought Dad was overbearing; Dad
thought Grace inconsiderate. Explosions erupted constantly and no one knew how
to turn the tide.

Parents often complain to me about their kids' behavior. They are relieved but
dumbfounded when others compliment them on their well-behaved children. "Why
don't I ever see that kid?" they ask. If this sounds familiar, take heart. Your
child's awful behavior is a sign of comfort, of trust in your love and
consistency. He knows he can dish out the worst and you won't abandon him. You
might chastise, punish, or yell, but you won't stop being his parents.

Invite your child's imagination into the conversation of improving family
harmony - it can give you a gentle way to clear the air and validate the
deepest parts of him as you open communication channels.

Like Grace's family, if you and your child sometimes struggle to get along,
your family may appreciate these ideas:

(1) Listen With an Open Heart:

Encourage your child to share his concerns about you. Let him know there won't
be any recriminations for what he says - what's important is honesty. Let him
know you care about his feelings and no matter how impossible the situation
seems, you can work it out. Listen for the hurt or need behind any angry words:
"You never listen to me," is less a statement of fact than a plea for
connection. Nor do you have to give in to every request; just being heard and
understood can release resentment.

(2) Balance with Good Techno Thoughts

If your kid is besotted with new technology, use its language to engage her
imagination when you're trying to communicate better. It puts you in her world.
Maybe she can watch an imaginary iPhone video where you guys are getting along.
Or text her loving messages a few times a day. Let her know you're on her
side..

DEAR COMMUNITY,

7 Soothing Remedies for Kids' Headaches

"Instead of having headaches, I learned to feel my feelings. My feelings are
okay."

- Jones, age eight

Ten-year-old Ethan described his headaches as either "pounding cannonballs" on
the top of his head or "hummungous pliers" gripping his temples. He created a
character for them: a muscular hard-hat construction worker holding an enormous
drill in each hand, opening up the top of his head and drilling directly into
his brain. The intense pain made Ethan weep.

Headaches are the most common pain kids have and are often associated with high
levels of pressure and anxiety: 90 percent of all school age children get them,
while migraines affect 10 percent of kids - too many in my book. Both may be
caused my specific stressful events, but can be helped - often without
medication.

Pediatricians refer their patients with chronic headaches to me all the time.
My experience has shown me that a child's imagination can help unravel many of
the tangled nerves and tight muscles that result in headaches, and at the same
time, learn tension-taming skills that last a lifetime.

Positive images have a tremendous impact on pain when children are in a relaxed
state. Focusing on personal imageries can distract kids from discomfort and
allow them to let go of the tension in their head. It also gives kids a way to
explore and express the hidden feelings that cause stress. Although tools of
the imagination can be used on immediate pain, they work well between bouts of
distress as part of an overall prevention program.

Here seven headache-prevention tactics to try. They helped Ethan:

An ounce of prevention: If your child is prone to migraines, talk to him about
common triggers: chocolate, caffeine, cheese, and sugar; too little/too much
sleep; bright lights/loud noises; stress; anger or frustration; too much/too
little exercise; and barometric pressure changes. Knowing the triggers can help
with preventioin.

The power behind the pill: Ask your child to describe how she imagines a
headache pain-reliever works. Ethan described his Tylenol as a S.W.A.T. team
that parachuted into his brain to rescue him. Perhaps your child can picture a
soothing scene to help her - with or without the actual pain medicine.

Create a headache journal: Have your child note the date, time, and level of
his headache when he feels pain, along with what he was feeling before the
headache started. Use the 0 to 10 scale (0 = no pain, 10 = the most). When kids
start to make the connection between frustration, say, and the onset of their
headaches, it spurs them to learn new coping techniques (e.g.: relaxing
breathing, meditation, drawing, dancing, something physical to release stress,
and more).

Ask three questions: When a child is suffering, these three questions can help
reduce or eliminate the pain. Have her do deep balloon breathing (breathing
slowly two to three inches below the navel), then ask: (1) What color is it?
(2) What shape is it? (3) How heavy is it? After three to five more slow deep
breaths, ask her again. Continue to breathe and question in rounds. Her pain
will likely diminish or disappear within five to ten minutes.

DEAR COMMUNITY,

A Reminder:

The Healing Power of Family Play

[Adapted from last summer's post so you can remember & reconsider today.]

Many years ago I happened upon a magical island in the Mediterranean where
families from all parts of Europe took their holidays. The beaches have the
warmest, clearest aqua waters, there are fascinating prehistoric "taula" ruins,
a bit like Stonehenge sprinkled about, and the old towns take me back to a
charming other time. I've been fortunate to return almost every year, with the
exception of four, while intensely writing and sharing my book with the world.
So when I was able to return this past summer, I was struck by the delightful
healing possibilities of family play.

Across the island beaches so many languages were spoken, it was hard to keep
up. My Spanish was not close enough to Italian, my basic French is barely
similar to Catalan, and I'm lost for German and Dutch. Even the English accents
were difficult to decipher. Not understanding what the families around me were
saying proved perfect. Because I could only observe the interactions of the
families - their faces, movements, joy, laughter - without the distraction of
words, I could focus on perhaps an even deeper communication.

I saw a giant, gentle German bringing his hesitant three-year-old into the
waves, sharing the excitement of the unexpected while keeping him safe. Sitting
nearby, an Italian mom tenderly rubbed sunscreen on her little girl's back. In
a secluded cove, a French father played "chef de cuisine" with his
nine-year-old daughter. Carefully and slowly, the little girl made sand crepes
for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, while her dad patiently waited and gratefully
accepted her masterpiece meals. Other families built sand castles, complete
with moats and bridges as if they were building an amazing architectural
wonder. And the teens were jumping off high cliffs into the sea below - from
heights I had to almost close my eyes to.

But what I noticed most, was that the families were happy. They were in the
moment, totally loving, and enjoying each other. There was nary a video game to
be found. Their two or three weeks of fun in the sun allowed a balance to their
busy lives back home. But for how long? I realized the importance of sharing
family play time... all year. No hidden agenda, nothing to learn or teach. Just
have fun!

Now that summer is starting, consider making a commitment to your family's play
time happiness. Please read five ideas to sustain family happiness in my new
Huffington Post blog article [2]HERE.

Enjoy and share!

Let me know what are your favorite family fun times. Email me now, in a month,
or anytime.

TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK...

Although I won't be returning to my favorite island this summer, I'll be
happily starting to create an Activity Workbook for the kids you care about
based on my book. I'd be grateful if you could to let me know what you would
like included - what exercises were your favorites, what can't be missed, and
more. Email me directly at DrReznick@....

"Thank you for a wonderful presentation."

Ginny Tal, LCSW

"Thank you for giving such an informative and heartfelt presentation! On the
way home my son wanted to stop for frozen yogurt and I told him it was too
late, he started making "bummer" sounds. I asked him what feeling he was
having, where it was in his body, and what color it was - very cool! It was
"Disappointment," "all over" and "purple."

Thanks again,

A grateful Mom

"Thank you! I enjoyed and learned from your presentation last night and
appreciate the wonderful tips! We already talked about the Wise Animal guidance

We'll do more!"

Another appreciative Mom

"Thank you for such a wonderful workshop this weekend! I can already see many
ways to use your Nine Tools in the classroom as well as in my private practice.
I am absolutely devouring your book, and love the way it links imagination and

"I want to thank you for an amazing presentation. As I told you when you signed

DEAR COMMUNITY,

20 Tips to Boost Your Kid's Brainpower

If you've read The Power of Your Child's Imagination you know the story of the
eight-year-old girl who was panicked about returning to school because her
brain had rotted over the summer. Her math and spelling areas were black from
non-use, but by imagining washing them with white foam she transformed her
brain into a beautiful flower ready and able to learn. iVillage recently
consulted with me for about half of the 20 tips in their new article, Boosting
Your Child's Brain Power. I especially appreciate their balancing
educational/psychological insights and research with nutrition and exercise
ideas. Here are some to start you off before you go directly to their site. Let
me know which are your favorites.

Guest article by Stacey Colino for iVillage

Help Your Kid's Become a Better Learner

At the start of a new school year, you may feel like a spectator who's simply
cheering your child on. After all, his brainpower is largely out of your hands,
right? Wrong. The truth is there's a lot you can do to boost your kid's ability
to learn and reach his potential. "Children are born with their brains
hardwired in a certain way, but parents have a tremendous influence on the
development and shaping of their child's brain and the connections that are
being made inside," says child educational psychologist Charlotte Reznick,
Ph.D., an associate clinical professor of psychology at UCLA and author of
[2]The Power of Your Child's Imagination: How to Transform Stress and Anxiety
into Joy and Success. The key is to give your child's brain the TLC it needs
and deserves. Here are 20 ways to do that.

Sign Up Your Kid For the Breakfast Club

Your mama was right: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day - so make
it nonnegotiable for your kids. Researchers at Ulm University in Germany found
that high school students who ate breakfast had better visual-spatial memory
and were more alert than those who skipped the morning meal. Likewise, a study
from the U.K. found that a breakfast rich in complex carbohydrates helps kids
maintain mental performance - particularly in the areas of attention and memory
- throughout the morning. "A healthy breakfast with whole grains, fruit, low-
or non-fat milk or yogurt and a protein-rich food - such as nuts, eggs or
peanut butter - provides the body with key nutrients as well as with glucose,
which is the main source of fuel needed by the brain and provides steady blood
sugar levels, which can help a child focus," explains Elisa Zied, M.S., R.D.,
author of Nutrition at Your Fingertips.

Ask Open-Ended Questions

You know how your kids love to ask you why? Well, turn the tables on them and
crank up their brainpower in the process. Ask them why they like certain
friends as much as they do, or why they think certain rules exist, or what's
the best vacation they've ever taken and why it was the best. "Such questions
will encourage your child to come up with novel ideas, which in turn will help
to create new neural connections in her brain," explains Reznick. Try to
involve your kid's senses in your questions - by asking what the ideal vacation
spot looks like, sounds like and smells like - and you'll engage and stimulate
her brain even more.

Be Warm and Fuzzy - But Firm

"Research suggests that a warm, emotionally stable home, in which children's
decisions are monitored and age-appropriate rules and goals are set, is
important for the development of executive cognitive function - skills
involving planning, abstract reasoning, working memory and emotional
regulation," notes Nathanial Riggs, Ph.D., an assistant professor of preventive
medicine at the University of Southern California. "Conversely, kids with
punitive or harsh parents are at risk for problems with these skills during
childhood." The take-home message: Provide your child with rules and limits and
guide him through decision-making processes - with love and compassion - so he
can learn to anticipate the long-term consequences of his choices.

Make Sleep a Priority

If your child doesn't snooze enough, he or she may lose precious brainpower.
"Sleep impacts every aspect of a child's cognitive functioning, including
attention, memory, problem-solving and decision making." says psychologist Jodi
Mindell, Ph.D., associate director of the Sleep Center at the Children's
Hospital of Philadelphia and author of Take Charge of Your Child's Sleep.
"Studies have shown that children who don't get sufficient sleep are more
likely to do poorly in school and be identified as having learning difficulties
and/or attention problems." Set a consistent bedtime and wake-up time for your
child, enforce an electronic curfew (no TV, computer or other device) two hours
before bedtime and create a relaxing bedtime routine to set your child up for
enough good quality shut-eye every night.

Encourage One-Thing-at-a-Time-Tasking

A recent study by researchers at the University of Leuven in Belgium found a
U-shaped curve in people's ability to multitask throughout their lifespan: At
the ages of 9 and 11, kids struggled to perform a task that required naming
items in certain categories while walking; young and middle-age adults did much
better. There's a reason for this: While kid's brains are undergoing
full-throttle development, it's easier and more efficient for them to focus on
a single task rather than try to juggle several. "The research shows that when
kids multitask, many do everything worse," explains Reznick. Make a
no-TV-while-doing-homework rule, and encourage your child to focus his
attention on the task at hand before moving on to another one.

Put Omega Power on Your Side

Whether it's because of their anti-inflammatory or anti-clotting effects, or
the way they improve signaling between nerve cells, this much is certain:
Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial for the brain. Research at the University of
Cincinnati College of Medicine found that when healthy boys ages 8 to 10 took
daily doses of 400 or 1,200 milligrams of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) - the
primary omega-3 fatty acid in gray matter - they experienced changes in the
activation of areas of the brain that could potentially promotie improvements
in attention, memory and other aspects of cognition, says the study's lead
author Robert McNamara, Ph.D., an associate professor of psychiatry at the
University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. "It's critical that children get
DHA in their diets to support brain development. Supplementation with fish oil
(1 gram of EPA + DHA daily) is one option, and several foods are now fortified
with DHA." Incorporate them into your child's diet regularly.

Get Your Kid Off the Coach

Regular physical activity is beneficial for every aspect of a child's health -
and brain function is no exception. A recent study at the Medical College of
Georgia in Augusta found that when sedentary, overweight kids ages 7 to 11 put
in 20 or 40 minutes of exercise a day, after 13 weeks they experienced
improvements in executive function and ability to do math; what's more, MRIs
revealed that important areas of their brains became increasingly activated.
(Their sedentary counterparts experienced no such increases.) Meanwhile.
research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign found that kids who
are more aerobically fit perform more accurately on cognitive tasks requiring
attention and control in response selection. Sign up your kid for the sport of
her choice, make playground trips a regular part of the day, schedule family
bike rides on weekends - anything to keep her active.

Play Stimulating Games Together

Whether you play "I Spay" or "Geography" on a long car trip, do challenging
puzzles at home, or play card games involving memory or board games requiring
strategy or abstract reasoning skills, you'll be doing your child's brain a
favor. "Playing is how kids learn early on," Reznick says, and all of these
games will help your child's brain forge new neuronal connections. A hidden
perk. Playing them together will help you appreciate different aspects of your
child's intelligence you may not have noticed.

DEAR COMMUNITY,

Raising a Child Who Loves to Read:

7 Steps Starting With Babies

How do you feel about the importance of our children not only learning to
read, but loving to read? My esteemed colleague, Dr. J. Richard Gentry, is an
expert in childhood literacy and has some of the keys to both. Dr. Gentry is a
former university professor and school teacher, with more than 30 years of
experience working with beginning readers. He is author of Raising Confident
Readers: How to Teach Your Child to Read and Write - From Baby to Age 7. I am
delighted to share his article with you and look forward to your thoughts.

Guest article by Dr. J. Richard Gentry, author of Raising Confident Readers

Raising a Child Who Loves to Read:

7 Steps Starting With Babies

Your baby or toddler can read, and you should be your child's first reading
teacher. Baby/toddler reading is not well understood scientifically. There are
almost no studies of 2- and 3-year-old readers, though 32,000 successful
parents are sharing their successes online. Many "experts" don't believe a
baby's joyful, informal, literacy-building interactions with parents is as
valid as the kind of formal instruction used with 6-year-old nonreaders at
school. But babies' brains are different from their 6-year-old counterparts -
they are likely right-brain learners from birth to age 3, with the capacity to
pick up reading much like they pick up multiple languages, easily and without
formal instruction.

1. Use rhyming activities.

Recite and read nursery rhymes. Put your face close to hers, perhaps tickle her
tummy and smile when the rhyme arrives. Jack and Jill went up the (pause)...
hill. Such activities activate the Broca area of the baby's brain, important
for beginning reading and phonetic awareness.

2. Use "finger spelling."

Finger spelling uses a tangible object (the hand) and physical movement
(holding up fingers) to signal the number of sounds or "phonemes," in a word.
For example, say the word "rat." Put your thumb and say the sound "r." Then
hold out your pointer finger and say the second sound of "a." Then put out your
next finger and say the sound "t." This activates the parieto-temporal area of
your baby's brain, the part that pulls words apart and puts them back together
.

3. Read aloud daily.

Read favorite books over and over. Repetition provides more words and richer
grammar for your child to hear so your baby lays down more elaborate circuits
than if you just talked to her. It also stimulates memorization. Soon she'll be
saying the words before you do. Let baby turn the pages, touch the book, even
"experience" the book in her mouth. Walk around, make noises, and act out the
characters to make reading a multisensory learning experience. Read a few
minutes at least twice a day. Stop reading when your baby gets restless.

4. Turn reading into a conversation.

Your baby needs face-to-face contact so he can see your lips as you speak and
watch your smiles and expressions. Listen for his coos, body movements, smiles,
and lip movement - and then respond back. In essence, you are having a happy
conversation with your child while engaging with print.

5. Find age-appropriate books.

The best books for age 0-2 are: wordless picture books; nursery rhyme books;
books you can chant; books you can sing; pattern books (easy-to-read books with
predictable, repeated patterns of text); board books (sturdy cardboard books
that withstand baby handling); soft cloth books; storybooks; information books;
and books with textured illustrations for touching.

6. Read with enthusiasm.

By turning reading into a lively, fun activity, you are activating her social,
hearing, emotional, and linguistic systems all at once. Your baby will
associate reading time with fun and happy time.

7. Don't relegate reading to books alone.

By six months of age, you can label a few objects in the baby's nursery and
introduce an activity called "Reading Around Baby's Room." Research shows that
babies may understand words five months before they can speak them, and that
five-month-old's can recognize and remember a visual stimulus for up to two
weeks after seeing it. Write 5-10 words like chair, box, red, hat, and Spot on
5x7 cards and tape them to the object or pet photo. Once your baby starts to
show interest in the activity, gradually add more words.

RAISING CONFIDENT READERS:
How to Teach Your Child to Read and Write from Baby to Age 7

Dr. J. Richard Gentry

Early childhood literary expert Dr. J. Richard Gentry has written a critically
acclaimed book for parents on how to teach very young children to read, which
also documents the many benefits, including higher IQ and a 32-million-word
advantage over their peers who did not get this early exposure. In Raising
Confident Readers: How to Teach Your Child to Read and Write from Baby to Age
7, Dr. Gentry says not only do babies and toddlers love to engage in fun
interactive literacy activities with their parents, but their brains are
uniquely suited to learning how to read. It's during infancy when many of the
neural pathways establishing language proficiency are formed.

DEAR COMMUNITY,

Halloween Time: Fun or Fear?

Halloween is supposed to be a fun time for kids of all ages. And for many it
is. Dress up, hang out with friends or family, and collect candy. What could be
bad? Plenty, if you ask 11-year-old Louise. Halloween is absolutely no fun at
all for her. She knows she's supposed to enjoy the spooky decked out houses,
the scary movies, the haunted homes in her neighborhood.... but it FREAKS her
out. Even the silly creatures in the Halloween TV commercials are disturbing.
Her imagination runs away with her and she has nightmares for weeks.

Louise isn't the only kid I've seen with the Halloween haunts. There are plenty
of normally happy-go-lucky youngsters who cannot handle the intensity of the
visual horrors that are put upon them this time of year. Teens too, although
most are embarrassed to admit it. Their uncomfortable feelings often surface as
mean, irritable, or annoying behavior. The truth is, sometimes a kid's
character is just not built for so much scariness.

But what to do when Halloween is all around us? How can we help our sensitive
kids develop the tools to get through, and possibly even enjoy this crazy
holiday we've created? I'd like to offer a key to soothing the "scaries" from
inside out: a short guided meditation for protection, adapted from The Power of
Your Child's Imagination: How to Transform Stress and Anxiety into Joy and
Success. It's been a fear conqueror, and Halloween is another on the list. You
can adapt the language to fit your child's age and developmental level. Once
you read it to your child a few times (or make a recording*) he'll be able to
start remembering and doing for himself before he heads out the door, turns on
the TV, or shuts his light at bedtime.

Feeling Safe... a Guided Imagery For Protection:

"Be aware of the air going into your nose, down into your belly, and then out
again through your nose. Let yourself find a comfortable rhythm breathing in
and out slowly - one... two... three.., one... two... three... Now, be aware of
your chest and your heart. Picture a Heart Center in the middle of your chest.
As you breathe in and out, imagine a spark of light inside it. It may be as
small as a dot - or it may already be large. It may be white, or pink, or
green, or any color you like. Imagine this spot of light expanding with every
slow breath you take, like a seed growing into hope and love. Allow it to bring
comfort to melt away any fears and worries, filling your Heart and chest like a
rippling rainbow.

"Keep breathing slowly as light gently spreads its warmth through your body,
filling you with peace and calm. You have all the time you need. When this
light of safety fills your whole body, imagine its protection spreading six
inches past your skin. As it grows, notice if your protective light changes.
Out one foot, two feet, three feet... It surrounds all of you - front, back,
top, bottom, sideways - like being in a protective egg.

"Now picture putting a special seal around your safety light. It may be gold,
silver, copper, or any other color. Inside you are safe and secure; nothing bad
can come in. Only good. You are protected by your bubble of safety light.
Anything harmful bounces off back to where it came from....

DEAR COMMUNITY,

Q&A With Best of You Today

Best of You Today is a fabulous highly read website, providing cutting age
articles from health and nutrition, to self-growth, fitness, and being a
conscious mom. They recently interviewed me for a two-part series on using
imagery with kids. I've pulled some of the Q&A below and you can read more from
the links provided.

Q: In your opinion, what are the biggest issues facing children and parents
today?

A: From my experience working with kids over the years, the biggest issues
facing families are the effects of stress and their resulting pressures and
worries on both kids' and their parents' peace of mind and emotional happiness.
The stress may come from peer pressure, disquiet at home, loss of family
income, parental divorce, sibling rivalry... the list is long and continues.
The American Psychological Association's annual study on stress now asks kids
how stressed they are compared to the year before. Not surprising it's
increasing, though many parents aren't aware of its extent. I get calls from
parents every week asking me to help their kids with symptoms of stress:
trouble sleeping, headaches, stomachaches, anger, anxiety, and more. They
affect all areas of their life: school, friends, family. The fact is, we all
experience stress - it's how we handle it that makes a difference. Imagery and
the Nine Tools discussed in my book offer a positive way of coping.

Q: Please tell us about a particular instance where guided imagery helped a
child make a profound transformation.

A: One child in particular has touched me; imagery was able to make a profound
change in his life. I share part of his story because it concerns the most
common stress related pain children experience - headaches, which 90% of school
age children experience.

At ten years old, Ethan had been having headaches since he was seven. He feared
he might have a brain tumor, although CAT scan results were normal. He was
taking medicine, but his pediatrician didn't want him to rely on medication,
nor was it always effective. And Ethan wanted to get a handle on the stresses
that might be contributing to his frequent headaches. In a bad month, he could
miss a week of school.

Ethan described some of his headaches as pounding cannonballs; others felt like
"humungous pliers" griping his temples. His fearful imagination created a
character for his headaches, a muscular hard-hat construction worker wearing a
T-shirt announcing he's a "Bad Guy." He held an enormous drill in each hand and
opened the top of Ethan's head, drilling directly into the brain. The intense
pain often made Ethan weep, "I wish I was dead."

Using the Nine Tools, we turned his fear-based images into positive ones that
could help him. He found a "Wise Guy" in the form of a SWAT team paratrooper
dropping Tylenol into his brain, coming to his rescue. That brought some relief
and he imagined the trooper helping even without the Tylenol.

Talking to Body Parts helped Ethan realize what might set off a headache. He
discovered his Anger, which as "like fire exploding," and Worry, a "dark blue
mouse" frantically scurrying in his head. The visual connections between his
headaches and anger, stress, and frustration motivated him to practice the
Balloon Breath on a regular basis to quiet things down. He often pictured the
pain melting out of his head, sending it's energy into the air and
disappearing.

Within months, Ethan's headaches decreased considerably. He didn't need as much
medication and managed to attend school regularly. He even made a list of
healthy habits for other headache sufferers that you can read about in [2]The
Power of Your Child's Imagination.

Q: What is the added value of combining artistic expression with imagery?

A: The arts have been shown over time and research that they do more than
communicate and entertain; they soothe our souls, clarify our thinking, and
even soften our body's stress responses. Applied to the imagery experience,
artistic expression can act like a booster pack, enhancing the healing that
imagery inspires. When you add the creative arts, the richness of imagination
becomes three-dimensional. Music deepens relaxation and concentration, while
drawing and writing offers alternate ways "in" to the private world. The
ability to express on paper the truth of a child's heart and mind makes those
images concrete and more powerful. A child's art creations can also give a
clearer sense of his inner struggle, an insight that can help guide him toward
each next step.

Q: What encouragement and advice can you offer parents who want to start using
your guided imagery techniques with their children?
A: Have fun. Set aside imagine time. Make it a game. Make it about what
matters. Find out what's important to your child and start there. Follow the
process. Practice on yourself. Be patient; learning new skills takes a bit of
time.

There are six more Q&As in our interview. Please enjoy and feel free to comment
on the links below.

DEAR COMMUNITY,

Family Dinners: Just Holiday Time or All the Time?

With the holidays upon us, there's likely going to be a lot of family
gatherings - meals included. It brings up the question of how essential these
rituals are to you - not just at holiday time - but all the time.

Family dinners can be a loving, predictable routine that make kids feel safe
and cherished. It's wonderful to know there is something you can always count
on, even when there's so much unpredictability and change in our fast-paced
lives. Yet with all the activities kids are running to after school - sports,
arts, music, and more - family meals often fall to the wayside. Trying to
juggle multiple kids' schedules becomes and almost Herculean task. So it's
crucial to think about what's key to your family - what your values are - and
come up with a workable solution.

Find a workable solution:

There's a wide range of what works. Some of the families I treat insist on the
importance of gathering together every night. They believe that touching base
daily is critical, especially after such busy days. These families work their
kids' schedules so that there is only one after school activity a day. If Jonny
might have soccer on Monday, Erin waits until Tuesday for her piano lesson. Dad
leaves for work early in the am, and if need be, finishes a project after the
kids are in bed. That way, everyone is home for dinner.

Other folks choose a couple of nights a week as treasured; no one makes plans
Wednesday and Sunday evenings. And on the other nights, whichever parent is
home has special alone time with the children that aren't out. It seems to
balance out well.

Still other families accept the chaos of everyone's schedules during the week,
but keep Friday nights as a sacred ritual. They pull out their very best china
and the kids drink juice from wine glasses. They light candles and bring the
spirit of love into their home and hearts as they welcome the weekend. Everyone
feels like a "special guest" at the table. And everyone looks forward to this
weekly loving connection.

No matter how crazy and busy your lives are, find a mealtime ritual that works
for your family.

Appreciate the healing possibilities:

There's nothing like a laughter-filled table to release the stress of the day
with people whom you love and who love you. It's a great time to hear about
everyone's experience - highs, lows, funny moments, silly seconds... One family
has a unique take on the best/worst of the day; they share what their "rose"
and "thorn" were that day and double up on the positive by adding a "petal" or
two of sweet stories. Plus, the understanding that comes from knowing someone
really listens to you - that a family member is on your team - can be
exhilarating, cathartic, and healing.

Five tips to connect at the dinner table:

1. Start dinnertime during set-up-time and involve everyone - preparing the
meal, setting the table, placing food - even the youngest can help.

2. Try to talk one at a time and ask follow-up questions after someone speaks.
Play simple sharing games such as "rose/thorn" or "high/low" or "success" of
the day.

3. So no one person hogs the conversation, everyone gets to speak once before
the free-for-all of anyone speaks begins.

4. Express gratitude before or after every meal holding hands.

5. No one gets up from the table till the last eater is done; parents may want
to linger to chat after the kids are excused.

DEAR COMMUNITY,

A Reminder... 7 Holiday Stress Busters for Kids (and you too!)

From Imagery For Kids archives, and now on the Huffington Post, a wonderful
reminder how to have stress-free holidays for the whole family.

Although holiday time means presents and no school for most American kids, it
can also be a stressful time - particularly in families facing financial
challenges, in split or blended families, and in families where a loved one has
recently passed away.

One of the first steps for parents is to realize how much stress kids are under
- much of it related to the economy and school. A recent American Psychological
Association's Stress in America survey found that while 45 percent of teens and
26 percent of tweens said they were under more stress this year, less than a
third of parents even noticed their kids' increased worry.

And their worry is affecting the quality of their lives: 42 percent of teens
and 30 percent of tweens report headaches; 49 percent of teens and 39 percent
of tweens cite difficulty sleeping; 39 percent of teens and 27 percent of
tweens say they eat too much or too little.

Here are 7 simple holiday stress-reducing strategies that can make a
difference:

Visualize a heart-filled holiday: You can do this one at the dinner table. Have
everyone in the family close their eyes, focus on their heart, and imagine what
kind of holiday will bring joy into their heart. Then share your ideas around
the table. This helps kids feel listened to, cared for, and included.

Give the gift of calmness: Ancient wisdom and modern research point to the
calming effects and health benefits of slow, deep breathing. Make a regular
practice of taking 1 to 5 minutes each day of relaxing "balloon breathing."
Breathe in to a count of 3 about 2 inches below the navel, imagining there's a
balloon filled up with air, and out to that same slow count. It'll center and
rebalance every family member to face the joys and inevitable disappointments
of the holiday season.

Offer distress a voice: If this is your child's first holiday without a loved
one - grandpa passed away, or big sister is in Afghanistan - younger family
members may feel a deep sense of loss. Or maybe your child is feeling the
stress of a recent divorce. Give her paper and markers, and ask her to draw
whatever is making her sad or mad. Then ask her what the picture wants to say
out loud. Often, putting a face on an emotion and letting it "speak" makes the
child feel better - and gives the parent a way to understand what's going on.

Sweat is sweet: Kids (and adults) can get all pent up during the holiday time.
Surprise little ones by clearing the furniture out of the center of the room,
turning on some fun music, and dancing vigorously for 10 minutes. Or bundle up
the family and take a wintry walk while playing "I Spy." Exercise releases
feel-good chemical and is one of the fastest ways to chase away holiday blahs
and instill a sense of togetherness.

Blow out negativity, light up hope: Create a family ritual of hope. Have two
candles for each family member: one lit, one not. Have each imagine what they'd
like to let go of - what no longer serves them - and say, "I'm going to toss
this out (anger, worry, meanness to my sister) when I blow this candle out."
Then light a new candle and share, "I hope to bring in (kindness, faith,
cleaning my room) as I light anew." Let go of the old and bring in the new. You
can use one candle to symbolize all, or light up your whole home with several.

[1]

DEAR COMMUNITY,

Start Simple:

A View of the New Year

I love New Year's. "Regular" New Year, Chinese New Year, Jewish New Year,
Indian New Year, whatever New Year tradition there is, count me in. Any reason
to start fresh and be given a second chance. How many of us could use a do-over
when we mess up? How comforting to know you've been given another opportunity
to do better. The hope in New Year's is priceless.

Yet too many people make long lists of New Year's resolutions and never are
successful with any of them. Part of that is trying to take on too much. Your
heart is in the right place, but your time schedule is not. Or you write down
things you think you should do, but don't really want to or aren't quite ready
for.

Whether you're working on self-improvement, helping your child carry through on
goals, supporting a spouse, co-worker or friend, it's the same process. Be
honest and start simple. Take one step at a time, bit by tiny bit.

Here are 8 Start Simple ideas that are easy enough for kids or adults. Pick one
- just one! Once it's a habit, part of your nature, you can choose another.

1. Keep a Success Log:

Each day, write down one way you felt successful or proud of yourself - even if
it's just getting out of bed (which many kids have used minutes before having
to leave for school). Tack the paper on your fridge, bulletin board, or
wherever, and keep adding one a day. In a week, you'll have 7 accomplishments,
in a month 30, in a year 365. A great way to stay positive.

2. Make a Gratitude List:

This is especially helpful for turning the tide when you're feeling low. So
make a list. A short list. Even one or three "I'm grateful for's" can make a
difference. If you really want to be generous with yourself, do more. Each
time, write the whole sentence out: "I am grateful for this new day." "I am
grateful my daughter didnt' punch her brother on the way to school." "I am
grateful for my work." "I am grateful I have love in my life." You get the
idea...

3. Breathe Slowly for 2 Minutes:

It doesn't matter if you breath through your nose, breathe through your mouth,
or breath in one nostril and out the other - just take 2 minutes (at least to
start) to go "inside" and pay attention to your breath. It's guaranteed to calm
and center you.

4. Offer Kindness Each Day:

Do one kind act - for yourself - or for another. Helping others gets those feel
good juices going. Besides, how wonderful when we take a moment to be kind to
each other. Surprise yourself - surprise a friend or family member. Or do
something kind without anyone knowing. How does that feel?

5. Write No Matter What:

In Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way, she recommends three pages a day. That may
be too overwhelming for you or your kids. Start with three sentences. That's
doable. If more pours out - fine - but if not, it doesn't matter. Write first
thing in the morning, last at night, or any time in between. Just write. And
write from your heart!

Please read more of these Start Simple ideas at [2]Psychology Today.

6. Draw Whatever:

7. Accept a Compliment:

8. Look for the Good:

Go to [3]Psychology Today now. Then...

Let me know how you do with these. What ideas you gravitate towards, and what
your kids prefer. Please feel free to add your own, I'd love to hear what you
put on your Start Simple list. Write me at DrReznick@.... You
might be featured in a future newsletter.

children.... Charlotte's soothing voice and gentle pacing provide an Imagery
experience that feels safe and allows space for Imaging and calmness. Her use
of descriptive language and invitation to all of the senses will allow children

DEAR COMMUNITY,

Love Ahead:

And lots of learning opportunities

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, I think of this month as "love
month." Self-love, loving each other - friends, siblings, parents, partners.
I'm happy to share several of my articles on these subjects and will start you
off with a paragraph or two to get you started.

Valentine's Day: Everyone Deserves to Be Happy:

What better way to help a child find happiness than to start within... being
her own best friend. When your child has a best friend inside, she can be happy
no matter what storms of life are outside. With a strong foundation of
self-love and self-acceptance, kids learn to value their own company and
integrity over just fitting in. They realize they can nurture and depend on
themselves

Like six-year-old Chloe.... [2]Read more here.

5 Tips to Turn the Tide: Parents and Kids Living Together Lovingly:

Parents often complain to me about their kid's behavior.

Eleven-year-old Grace has always been a challenge... [3]Read more here.

Time to Open Your Heart:

Think about how you'd approach your family, your partner, even yourself if you
took a little time to nurture YOU and allow your heart to open. How would your
life be different? Better? More satisfying? Imagine where an open-heart could
lead you. Where would you want it to?

I'd like to share a short heart-centered and heart-opening meditation - good
for the whole family.

[4]Read more here.

And finally...

Appreciate Your Child Every Day:

I've written about the Top Ten Things Kids Want and Need From Their Parents in
The Power of Your Child's Imagination, although "appreciation" is not on their
list. Kids often don't even realize it's importance. But you do. So let your
children know at least one thing you appreciate about them - or are grateful
for - each day. Perhaps it's your four-year-old's smile as she dresses herself
proudly, or that your son still lets you hug him at age 12... anything that
touches your heart. And by your example, they will learn to share what they
appreciate as well. Some families like to keep a running list to look upon when
the tough times come.

TEDx Studio City ED:

Self-Regulation + Technology + Education

Saturday, March 3, 2012

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a
four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those
world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. In the spirit of ideas worth
spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people
together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and
live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small
group.

At TEDx Studio City Ed, the focus is on Self-Regulation, Technology, and
Education. Children require strategies to self-soothe, calm themselves, and
operate at an optimal level of arousal. Being in a calm steady state is
required for success in school and in life. I'm thrilled to be part of a group
of speakers from diverse disciplines who will come together to elucidate the
latest advances in this area.

Organized by Lee-Anne Gray, PsyD, featured speakers include Dan Siegel MD,
Sandra Kaplan EdD, Venerable Tenzin Yignyen, Cheryl Arutt PsyD, Gwennyth
Palofox PhD, Lewis Tachau, and Susan Kaiser Greenland.

"THE NOW EFFECT"

How This Moment Can Change The Rest of Your Life

Elisha Goldstein PhD

The Now Effect: How This Moment Can Change The Rest of Your Life by
psychologist Elisha Goldstein PhD, is based on time-tested teachings with a
thoroughly playful and modern twist, as you read it you'll begin to train your
mind to become more aware of the choices all around you and open up to what
really matters in the moments of life.

The Now Effect is that moment of clarify that at times can fall upon us like a
moment of grace, but can be trained to help us alleviate stress, ease pain,
cultivate emotional freedom, create a healthier brain, and some may even say to
find enlightenment. This book has been praised by leading scholars, therapists,
and teachers, including Jack Kornfield PhD, Daniel J. Siegel MD, Tara Brach
PhD, Rick Hanson PhD, among others.

Throughout the book there are Microsoft tags that allow you to access short
videos of Elisha guiding us through practice (on iPad, Nook or Kindle Fire the
videos are embedded). Grounded in the science of how the brain tricks us to
dwell in the past and the future - anywhere but now - and full of practical
methods, The Now Effect will help you feel stronger, less stressed, more
present, happier, kinder, and more effective.

I hope you'll [7]take a look at this book NOW.

Aloha Everyone,

I am back, as much as I can be for the moment.  I have much to do these days,
but I will try to keep up with all of the posts in the groups and add my two
cents more often.

I am sorry that there has not been much activity here from me for a while.  It
has been very hectic.  I am still in the throwes of transition, however it seems
to be nearing the closure of another chapter in my story.

If you haven't had a chance yet, pleas visit my new website, Lyra's Cookie
Company, and join my facebook connection if you like.

I have also been painting a mural, making pottery and jewlery, and remodeling a
trailer, which I am now selling.  All of this and more you can see on my
facebook page.

Any way, that is what is new with me.  Let me know how you all are doing these
days.  Now that we have passed the climax of the Mayan calender everything is up
to a new generation of visionaries.  Let's start building that new vision right!
