Welcome to the IndianaCompact
We are an Indiana group inspired by San Francisco Compacters who have pledged to go a year without buying anything NEW (except for consumables like food, toiletries, etc). We do support buying USED, borrowing, sharing and bartering. We hope to gain a better understanding of our habits (both good and bad) as American consumers, a better ability to differentiate between need and want (by delaying the instant gratification of shopping new), and hope to help the Earth out in the process.
Stated goals from the San Francisco group:
1) to go beyond recycling in trying to counteract the negative global environmental and socioeconomic impacts of U.S. consumer culture, to resist global corporatism, and to support local businesses, farms, etc. -- a step, we hope, inherits the revolutionary impulse of the Mayflower Compact
2) to reduce clutter and waste in our homes (as in trash Compact-er)
3) to simplify our lives (as in Calm-pact)
Exceptions besides the obvious (food, shampoo etc.) may include anything for the purpose of safety, health or educational advancement. Use your own judgement.
Sympathizers are welcome to join. :) Even if you are unsure about all the rules, you may find our links and information helpful.
