Courtney Davis is looking for submissions of poetry and short prose from
nurses for a new anthology. Her last anthology was a very high quality
publication, unusually so I thought.
Between the Heartbeats:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0877455171/timobrienhomepagA/
GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION TO ALL-NEW BETWEEN THE HEARTBEATS
Cortney Davis and Judy Schaefer are seeking submissions for an all-new
collection of writing by RNs to be published by the University of Iowa Press
as a companion volume to Between the Heartbeats: Poetry and Prose by Nurses,
published by the press in 1995. Read this first anthology for an example of
the strong, unsentimental writing we would like to see.
1) Registered nurses may submit up to 6 poems, 2 short stories, 2 creative
essays or any combination thereof.
2) All work must be submitted in duplicate with your name and address on
each
page.
3) Enclose a SASE for notification only. Work will not be returned.
Submissions without a SASE will not be considered.
4) Deadline for submissions is August 1, 2001. Work received after that
date
will not be considered.
5) We are not seeking clinical articles.
6) You may e-mail us with question but do not send e-mail submissions!
7) Payment is one copy of the anthology and a 40% discount on all University
of Iowa publications.
8) Previously published work may be considered. If the author does not hold
copyright, she or he will be asked to obtain reprint permission from the
copyright holder.
9) Final acceptance of all submissions depends on the University of Iowa
Press.
We hope to send out acceptance or rejection notices by mid-September. Then
we will submit the anthology to the Press for their final approval. Please
be patient-this is a long process. We will keep you posted. Send
submissions to either co-editor:

Here is a note from Betty Tisdale:
There is a new little book out "Christmas Filled with
Miracles"...I wrote a story about "Santa is Coming to Town" about the
Christmas party the 121st Signal Bn of the 1st Infantry Division at
D-An...and the joy they brought to the children of my orphanage, An Lac
Orphanage in December 1966. Santa Claus in his red suit, came in a
helicopter to give joy to the children (in that stifling heat)....Sgt.
Deeble, Lt. Bob Fisher, Maj. Bill Hilsman and all the rest - in the height
of
the war...gave of themselves in an another way.
The book is $12.95 and can
be ordered through me, BettyTisdale@... and the proceeds go to my new
organization HALO - Helping and Loving Orphans...right now raising money for
the orphanage at Quang Ngai.
I would love to hear from any of the men who were there that day!!!!

On to the Guest Book!
My name is David Powell and I was fortunate enough to spend some time with
the Women and Men at the 67th Evac Hospital in Qui Nhon. I was wounded in
Phu Nhon (southern Pleiku Province) on Feb. 1, 1971 when our Firebase was
attacked by VC/NVA. I was serving with the C Btry. 1st BN 92nd Field
Artillery. I believe I still have my patients wrist band from my stay. First
of all, let me say "Welcome Home" to all of the fine medical personnel who
might read this message. Secondly, I'd like to say "Thank You" for making
this Artillery Sgt.'s stay as comfortable as humanly possible. You Nurses
are the best! I was wounded in the abdomen, left thigh, left and right arms
with multiple shell fragments Lastly, I'm looking for a link to a doctor who
took a picture of me while I was being prepared for surgery... he asked my
permission and promised me a copy of the picture. I know that this is like
looking for a needle in a haystack, but I have to give it a shot. Thank you
in advance for any help you can give me. I can be e-mailed at:

Very nice site. I was moved by the Doughnut Dollies when I was overseas. I
thought who are these girls and why are they doing this. As a draftee, this
put a positive perspective on why I was there. When we speak of heroes, we

Never had the chance before so I'll take this opportunity to say THANKS and

I served with a small intelligence unit assigned to 2nd Bde. of the 101st
Airborne, and was stationed at Camp Hochmuth (Phu Bai) in Northern I-Corps,
Vietnam from December 1970 through Dec. 1971. When not out in the field, I
used to slip through the wire at night at the top secret 8th Radio Research
Field Station on Phu Bai and go to the Special Services Club and library,
where I loved to play ping pong, read, drink coffee or enjoy the pleasure of
looking at a beautiful, slender, freindly Special Services woman with short
reddish hair and sparkling eyes who harkened from California somewhere, and
I would use any excuse to engage her in conversation. Like probably every
other guy there, I was totally infatuated with her. Unfortunately, in my
doddering antiquity, I can no longer recall her name, although I can see her
in my mind as though it was yesterday - like so many other memories from
that time. If anyone can remember her name, please drop me a line, and if
she is the one reading this - hello from the long forgotten past! I'm Marque
(pronounced 'Mark'), the Sgt. from the 101st who was a friend of Lt. Berry.
Thank you for being there.

PTSD;I have spent the last 30plus years trying to say what you do about
PTSD.( Except for the female part) you say it like it is: Fuck... is the
best feeling I want share with you, goose bumps, GodDamn your good! I have
only shared this much with one other woman since nam, a combat vet who
served in Cu Chi (spelling?) she was the first put me in my place as a "Guy
vet". I met her in the vet outreach facility in Hartford,Ct.in about 1989.
Jane Thompson, she to was a "Combat Vet" I was at Lane Army Heliport An Son
RVN May 67 thru may 68. Most of my time was spent as doorgunner on a medevac
chopper with the 498th Air Ambulance Co. I think most of our "Drops" were to
Ban Me Thout and Qui Nhon: maybe others? memory is slipping, lots of large
blank spots; might be O.K. to know but probably best left alone!? I gather
you live in Houston? I lived in Humble for about 10 years until my life

I stand deeply touched by the services rendered by the doctors and nurses
in the Nam, and the recital of it here in beautiful poetry.
I served as a combat infantryman with the 1st air Cavalry, '66-'67, and find
writing about that traumatic event that shaped boys lives cathartic. It
helps heal the soul to bring the ghosts buried deep inside, out once and for
ever into the light of day, that they can be destoyed. I invite you to my
"Vietnam Picture Tour, from the lens and poet’s pen of a combat
infantryman." There through poetry and pictures take a walk in "the park"
