blair Advisor trashes Blair over Iraq, calls him sycophant to WashingtonLONDON --- One of Tony Blair's most senior public servants launched a scathing attack Monday on the former prime minister over the Iraq war, accusing him of "sycophancy" towards Washington.

The former top prosecutor Ken Macdonald issued the attack after Blair admitted on the weekend that the country would have backed the Iraq war even if he knew it did not have weapons of mass destruction.

Blair, who controversially backed then US president George W. Bush in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, said he would "still have thought it right to remove" Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein because of the threat he posed to the region.

Blair's comments to the BBC sparked outrage Sunday and calls for his prosecution for war crimes, while one commentator said it was a "game-changing admission" for Britain's ongoing official inquiry into the war.
Macdonald, the former Director of Public Prosecutions, writing in The Times newspaper, accused Blair and using "alarming subterfuge" to mislead the British people into the conflict.

"This was a foreign policy disgrace of epic proportions and playing footsie on Sunday morning television does nothing to repair the damage."

Macdonald said the US seat of power "turned his head and he couldn't resist the stage or the glamour that it gave him."

"It is now very difficult to avoid the conclusion that Tony Blair engaged in an alarming subterfuge with his partner George Bush and went on to mislead and cajole the British people into a deadly war they had made perfectly clear they didn't want, and on a basis that it's increasingly hard to believe even he found truly credible."

Macdonald, who works at the same law chambers as Blair's wife, challenged the head of the inquiry into the war "to reveal the truth without fear."

Blair is due to give evidence to the inquiry, led by former civil servant John Chilcot, early next year.

Blair justified the war on the basis of Iraq's possession of weapons of mass destruction and long-range missiles and its non-compliance with UN weapons inspections, in defiance of numerous UN resolutions.

The alleged chemical and biological weapons were never found, but Blair said he would have gone to war even if he had known they were not there.

"I would still have thought it right to remove him (Saddam Hussein). Obviously you would have had to use and deploy different arguments, about the nature of the threat," he said.

ANNISE PARKER ELECTED
MAYOR OF HOUSTON!

Good News from Texas for Change! Annise Parker Elected Houston Mayor

Nation Watches as USAs Largest City Yet Chooses an Open Gay Leader.

A TRIUMPH OF COMMON SENSE

Annise Parker is not our mayor shes the citys mayor.

Houston Chronicle 13 December 2009 by Bradley Olson Hear me: The city is on your side. I learned about the problems and the needs and hopes of our city at the neighborhood level. I understand what needs to be done to move us forward. I promise to give to citizens an administration of honesty, integrity and transparency. The only special interest will be the public. We are in this together. We rise or fall together.

HOUSTON TX Annise Danette Parker was elected mayor of Houston on Saturday, winning her seventh consecutive city election and becoming both the first contender in a generation to defeat the hand-picked candidate of Houstons business establishment and the first openly gay person to lead a major U.S. city.

Parker, Houstons current city controller who first emerged in the public arena as a gay rights activist in the 1980s, defeated former City Attorney Gene Locke on an austere platform, convincing voters that her financial bona fides and restrained promises would be best suited in trying financial times. Parker, 53, will replace the term-limited Mayor Bill White on Jan. 1.

Her victory capped an unorthodox election season that lacked a strong conservative mayoral contender and saw her coalition of inside-the-Loop Democrats and moderate conservatives, backed by an army of ardent volunteers, win the day over Locke, a former civil rights activist who attempted to unite African-American voters and Republicans.

 Avant-Garde Press in Houston?

Avant-Garde Press in Houston?

In complete but unofficial returns

Parker coasted to a comfortable victory with

52.8 percent of the vote to 47.2 percent for Locke.

Turnout was 16.5 percent.

Join as one community

When Parker finally appeared at 10:30 p.m., resplendent in a gold pantsuit and pearl necklace, the room at the George R. Brown Convention Center jammed elbow-to-elbow with supporters erupted with a deafening cheer. Some were newcomers to political waters. Some had been with her a dozen years ago when she claimed her first City Council seat.

Tonight the voters of Houston have opened the doors to history, she said. I acknowledge that. I embrace that. I know what this win means to many of us who thought we could never achieve high office. I know what it means. I understand, because I feel it, too. But now, from this moment, let us join as one community. We are united in one goal in making this city the city that it can be, should be, might be, will be.

Parker harkened back to her earliest days of involvement in civic issues, when she served as president of Neartown Association, saying that work gave her the insight she needed as she headed into public office, and especially an understanding of the human repercussion of politics.

Hear me: The city is on your side, she said. I learned about the problems and the needs and hopes of our city at the neighborhood level. I understand what needs to be done to move us forward.

After introducing her family, including her partner, Kathy Hubbard, their three children and her mother, Kay Parker, she made a post-campaign promise to those who live in Houston.

I promise to give to citizens an administration of honesty, integrity and transparency, she said. The only special interest will be the public. We are in this together. We rise or fall together.

Lockes concession

Locke conceded at the Hyatt Regency shortly after 10 p.m., celebrating the diverse coalition of ethnic groups, unions, business leaders and political heavyweights represented in his campaign.

In a short and gracious speech, he congratulated Parker and called on supporters to get behind the mayor-elect.

Dont let past disappointments, past anger, past frustrations guide us into the future, he said. Lets unite and work together.

In many ways, the race was framed by the financial anxieties voters have experienced over the past 18 months. At the polls, voter after voter cited Parker's experience watching over the citys $4 billion budget as a primary consideration in their choice.

Instead of being turned off by a politician reluctant to promise the world, voters responded to Parkers straight talk about all that might not be possible in the coming years.

Dozens of Houstonians interviewed by the Houston Chronicle said they appreciated her often blunt answers that made Lockes proposals seem vague.

She attacked his past as a general counsel to unpopular local governmental agencies and their debt problems, painting him as a lawyer-lobbyist in broad strokes that sought to cast doubt in the very arenas in which voters perceived Parker to have strengths.

Hello, fellow Peace-Lovers,

Did you write, email, phone  and/or fax your congressional representative yet to direct him/her to co-sponsor Barbara Lee's bill HR 3699 to prohibit funding any surge?

If so, what reply did you get?

With no funding, we the People can stop the surge.

We just need more than the 26 co-sponsors to date and have to act fast.

Folks, Reach out to the low-hanging fruit - call all Reps who have cosigned J. McGovern's HR 2404 demanding an exit strategy, but have yet to sign HR3699 to commit to voting against funding.  Tell them you didn't hear an exit strategy and they need to take the next.  Stop the surge by blocking the funding.

If you haven't called, emailed and/or faxed your rep. yet, will you do it now, today?

You can find your Rep's contact information at congress.org.

The list of now 26 co-sponsors can be found here: http://www.govtrack .us/congress/ bill.xpd? bill=h111- 3699.

Thank you for all you're doing for Peace and health for our planet,

Here is the list (soon to be posted on http://JobsForAfgha ns.org)

Reps who signed HR2404 (demanding exit strategy), but have not yet signed HR 3699 blocking funds for the surge.

REID SAYS DEAL RESOLVES A
DISPUTE ON A PUBLIC OPTION

Reid Says Deal Resolves a Dispute on the Public Option

NOT a Profile in Courage

New York Times 9 December 2009 by Robert Pear and David Herszenhorn Under the amendment, people who receive federal insurance subsidies could not buy coverage from any health plan that provides abortions. They could use their own money to buy separate supplemental coverage for abortions.

WASHINGTON SENATE MAJORITY LEADER HARRY REID SAID TUESDAY NIGHT THAT HE AND A GROUP OF 10 DEMOCRATIC SENATORS REACHED A BROAD AGREEMENT to resolve a dispute over a proposed government-run health insurance plan, which has posed the biggest obstacle to passage of sweeping health care legislation.

Mr. Reid refused to provide details. Other senators said the tentative agreement would sideline but not kill the public option championed by President Obama and liberal Democrats in Congress.

Under the agreement, people ages 55 to 64 could buy in to Medicare. And a federal agency, the Office of Personnel Management, would negotiate with insurance companies to offer national health benefit plans, similar to those offered to federal employees, including members of Congress.

If these private plans did not meet certain goals for making affordable coverage available to all Americans, Senate Democratic aides said, then the government itself would offer a new insurance plan, somewhat like the public option in the bill Mr. Reid unveiled three weeks ago.

In announcing the agreement, Mr. Reid was apparently trying to create a sense of momentum for the health care legislation, which has been on the Senate floor for nine days, with no immediate end in sight.

 ARROGANT PEA BRAIN

ARROGANT PEA BRAIN

The White House praised the announcement. Senators are making great progress, and were pleased that theyre working together to find common ground, said Dan Pfeiffer, the White House communications director.

The majority leader has not briefed the 60-member Senate Democratic caucus on the agreement, and liberals may have reservations. I do not support proposals that would replace the public option in the bill with a purely private approach, said Senator Russ Feingold, Democrat of Wisconsin. We need to have some competition for the insurance industry to keep rates down and save taxpayer dollars.

Even senior members of the party said late Tuesday that they did not know if an agreement had been reached. I have no idea, said Senator Richard Durbin of Illinois, the assistant Democratic leader.

While refusing to provide any specifics, Mr. Reid, Democrat of Nevada, said: Insurance companies will certainly have more competition. The American people will certainly have more choices.

A bill approved last month by the House calls for a government-run health plan. So even if Senate Democrats reach consensus and pass their bill, they would not have the last word.

Mr. Reids comments came a few hours after the Senate rejected a proposal to ban coverage of abortion by health plans that would insure millions of Americans under the Democrats bill. The vote was 54 to 45.

Two Republicans, Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine, joined with 50 Democrats and two independents to kill the proposal. Seven Democrats joined 38 Republicans in support of the ban.

Mr. Reid said he would ask the Congressional Budget Office to estimate the cost of the ideas devised by the group of 10 senators five liberals and five centrists. Lawmakers often revise their proposals in the light of analysis by the budget office.

The American Hospital Association and the American Medical Association expressed concern about the proposed Medicare expansion. They told Congress that Medicare payments were often inadequate to cover their costs.

AARP, the lobby for older Americans, endorsed an earlier proposal to let some people 55 to 64 buy in to Medicare, with subsidies to help pay premiums. But it said it did not know enough about the new initiative to take a position.

 ARROGANT QUISLING

ARROGANT QUISLING

Democrats are trying to find a middle ground on the so-called public option, abortion and other contentious issues so they can attract the 60 votes necessary to move the bill forward, either by holding together all 58 Democrats and the two independents aligned with them or by attracting support from one or two Republicans like Ms. Snowe and Ms. Collins to offset any defections in their ranks.

While advocates of abortion rights hailed the Senates rejection of the stringent restrictions on abortion, the vote is unlikely to be the final word on how the issue is dealt with in the health bill.

Jersey Senate Judiciary Committee
Approves Gay Marriage Bill

Jersey Senate Judiciary Committee Approves Gay Marriage Bill

Love Will Find A Way
Let New Jersey be the state that turns the tide

Newark Star-Ledger 8 December 2009 by Mary Fuchs and Chris Megerian/Statehouse Bureau Staff If the measure is enacted, New Jersey would be the sixth state to allow gay marriage.

TRENTON LEGISLATION TO ALLOW SAME-SEX MARRIAGE IN NEW JERSEY CLEARED THE SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE LAST NIGHT after more than seven hours of emotional debate and testimony, setting the stage for a showdown in the full Senate.

Cheers erupted in the packed hearing room when the committee approved the bill 7 to 6.

The 10:06 p.m. vote came after more than 1,000 people flooded the Statehouse today in an effort to sway lawmakers opinions on one of the most controversial bills of the decade.

The marriage equality movement in America starts again here, right here, Steven Goldstein, chair of the gay rights advocacy group Garden State Equality, said after the vote.

During the marathon hearing, opponents including Orthodox Jews and Catholic officials argued that same-sex marriage would damage religious freedom and is not needed because the state already permits civil unions. Supporters including civil rights leaders and legal experts said gay couples do not have equal rights without being allowed to marry.

Like race, our sexuality isnt a preference, said Julian Bond, chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, who traveled from Washington, D.C., to testify. Its immutable, unchangeable and the Constitution protects us all from discrimination.

Josh Pruzanzsky, executive director of the Agudath of Israel of New Jersey, said same-sex marriage legislation would endanger religious freedom, inhibit free speech and undermine the preferred status of marriage. It would convey a social message that is deeply offensive to many residents of the state of New Jersey and lead to further erosions in the traditional conception of family.

Senators added an amendment, proposed by Sen. Bill Baroni (R-Mercer), clarifying that clergy are not required to marry same-sex couples if it conflicts with their religious beliefs. [Editor's note: This is true of straight marriages too; it's always been this way. Obviously, if some minister's hung up about gays, or a straight couple he doesn't like, then he's entitled to refuse to conduct the marriage, just as every couple's entitled to marry when they want.]

The hearing was sometimes heated and often emotional as teary-eyed families pleaded with the committee to approve same-sex marriage. One New Jersey mother asked lawmakers opposing the bill to tell her gay son that, He cant get married. Hes not good enough.

Hundreds of people signed up to speak, and the hearing room remained full throughout hours of testimony. People wanting to testify had to wait in another committee room, and some ordered pizza deliveries to the Statehouse tonight.

Tonights narrow vote did not follow party lines. Republican Baroni voted yes along with six Democrats, while two Democrats, committee chair Paul Sarlo (D-Bergen) and vice chair John Girgenti (D-Passaic), both voted no.

Gov. Jon Corzine praised the committee for advancing the bill (S1967/A2978), saying same-sex marriage is a civil rights issue that must be approved to assure that every citizen is treated equally under the law.

Its unclear if the measure has enough support to pass the entire Senate, where it could reach the floor for a vote as early as Thursday.

A lot of the advocates feel that theyre close and getting closer, said Senate President Richard Codey (D-Essex). Its certainly going to be a fairly close vote.

If it passes the Senate, the debate would be renewed in the Assembly. Assemblyman Reed Gusciora (D-Mercer), the Legislatures first openly gay member, said he believes support from the Senate should give enough momentum for it to also pass the Assembly.

During the long and largely civil debate, senators and advocates prodded each other on religious issues and legal questions over whether civil unions provide same-sex couples equal rights. At one point, Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen), a primary proponent of same-sex marriage, discussed the Torah with three rabbis.

Weinberg said lawmakers should not base their votes on religious texts. We are a country governed by laws that ensure equality and fairness for every individual, she said.

Pat Branigan of the New Jersey Catholic Conference said its the states responsibility to enforce the civil union statute, enacted in 2006, and investigate whether any unfounded allegations of discrimination against gay couples are true. The state of New Jersey should educate the public and should enforce state laws that provide protection for same sex couples, Branigan said.

Same-sex marriage advocates have mounted a last-ditch effort before Governor-elect Chris Christie, who opposes the measure, takes office. Sen. Gerald Cardinale (R-Bergen), who opposes the bill, said if Corzine signs it before leaving office, he would be turning a deaf ear to the voice of the electorate.

If the measure is enacted, New Jersey would be the sixth state to allow gay marriage.
Residents in 31 states, most recently Maine, have rejected same-sex marriage in referendum votes.

In 2006, the state Supreme Court ruled that committed same-sex couples deserve the same rights and obligations as married people. Lawmakers legalized civil unions later that year, and gay rights organizations continued their push for same-sex marriage.

The New Jersey State Bar Association, the states largest lawyers organization, has said civil unions were "second-class legal status" for gay couples.

Step It UP, Make It Happen This Time!

PDA/DFA Progressive Democracy South Jersey 8 December 2009 by Joanne ONeill If the president insists that enemies like this are his friends and that the nuts they represent can be placated by reason he will waste his opportunity to effect real change and have no one to blame but himself.

We will indeed have a vote on Medicare for All (same thing as single payer, same thing as HR 676) in the Senate. Senator Bernie Sanders will put forward Senate Amendment 2837 calling for Medicare for All, the only health reform that means anything.

And when that vote is taken we will know two things:
1. Who will stand up for the interest of the people, and
2) Whether WE have done everything we could have done to
speak out, and encourage everyone else you know to do the same.

This is a new action page, dedicated to sending an instant fax to every one of your members of Congress.

Here is the new fax action page, to send your personal faxes to all members of Congress at no charge to you.

And on the same page you can watch the fourth, count them, the fourth in our series of Im A Democrat, Im A Republican humorous policy advocacy videos, which nonetheless make the powerful
point that most of the tag team action going on in Congress is just a charade to try to keep us from getting involved in our own public policy, and all we have to do is just speak out in greater numbers and they will have no choice but to listen to the voice of the people.

Ralph Lopez’s interview included on Cindy Sheehan’s Soapbox, Listen tomorrow

Sunday, Dec. 6th 2 – 3 PM Pacific time (11am – noon Eastern)
NOW HEAR THIS: Cindy's Internet broadcasts continue!
This Sunday (December 6th) is a very peaceful one, especially in this already too war-weary week. Cindy welcomes Kevin Zeese, who represents both Voters for Peace AND Peace of the Action. They talk mostly about Peace of the Action. In addition, Cindy also welcomes Ralph Lopez, who brings forward a realistic, real world approach to creating peace and stability for the Afghan people. Of course, because his idea is creative, workable, and equitable - it has the profound disadvantage of not feeding the American War Industry with an endless supply of bodies and loot. (Beware of this sinister plot: it MUST be un-American!) So it will only interest wimps and wussies who hate killing and want a safe future for our children in this world! (What loosers!) So OK, boys and girls - this will be a very good Soapbox!

Dear Friends,

I feel I shouldn't have to send this to you. The fact is, the response to having a party Dec. 14th has been worse than underwhelming, it's been nonexistent.

Without getting long-winded over it, this should be a time for us re-energize our organizing and connecting with other groups to mount the kind of pressure that will achieve victory on all the important fronts:

stopping the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

forcing the senate democrats to go into "reconciliation"

so a simple 51 vote majority can enact real
universal medicare for all

prosecuting all crimes related to torture and
other violations of U.S. and International law

moving a Voters' Bill of Rights to preserve and
protect democratic voting in the USA

Recruitment Education to organize citizens to
protect public school children from
predatory military recruitment

You know the drill. Now I need to ask you, do you want to have this party Dec. 14th?

If I don't get some positive response in the next couple of days, I'll need to cancel the event, and we can skip December and look forward to a regular meeting 7:30 Monday, January 11th, 2010.

Please let me know your plans soon as you can.

Thanks very much.

BTW, have a look at
http://www.prosecutethemnow.com/?q=node/2477
More than 100 cities are having demonstrations against the Afghan war.

Also, we posted some really good video at
http://www.prosecutethemnow.com/?q=node/2478

The title of the post is
Keith Olbermann Tells Obama What
to Do with Afghanistan & Remember
the Good Old Days, when Barack
Obama "Talked Progressive"

Olbermann's comments are superb & right on the mark. The killer is the 15 second Obama campaign video from October 2007, when he promises to pull the troops out of Afghanistan on his first day in office, adding, "And you can take that to the bank."

Thanks,

Senators, Reps Hint Unrest in Legislature on Afghanistan

by Ralph Lopez Tue Dec 01, 2009

Hours ahead of Obama speech on Afghanistan, press conference of members from
both Houses, including Rep. Walter Jones who represents Marine base Camp
Lejeune. Jones calls into question consistency of reported 2013 withdrawal date
with 30,000 troop escalation, saying through an anecdote "that's not going to
happen." All report deep concern among constituents heard during Thanksgiving
break. Uncertain whether 41 votes needed to block funding in Senate are
present.

RUSH TRANSCRIPT: MEMBERS OF CONGRESS HOLD A NEWS CONFERENCE ON AFGHANISTAN

         DECEMBER 1, 2009

         SPEAKERS: SEN. RUSS FEINGOLD, D-WIS.

                    REP. WALTER B. JONES, R-N.C.

                    REP. JIM MCGOVERN, D-MASS.

                    REP. BARBARA LEE, D-CALIF.

FEINGOLD: Good afternoon and thanks for coming. I particularly

want to thank my colleagues from the House for joining me on this

issue, which we've already been working on together for quite a few

months, awaiting the president's decision that he'll announce tonight

     with regard to Afghanistan.

And I, for one, want to say I'm grateful that the president took

his time to listen to as many people as possible, and I think he's

been extremely thoughtful about it. And I also want to say that

anything I say would be tempered by giving the president the

opportunity to actually explain how what I'm hearing about this plan

     would actually hold together.

So having said that, I certainly continue, and I think my

colleagues continue, to question the wisdom of sending in tens of

thousands of more troops into Afghanistan.

We all know why many of us voted for the invasion in the first

place in 2001. It had to do with removing Al Qaida from Afghanistan

and getting the top leadership. We did not succeed in getting the top

leadership, but the goal continues to be, as the president articulated

with regard to Pakistan and Afghanistan, dealing with Al Qaida, not

     simply nation-building in Afghanistan.

And I, at various hearing, have had the opportunity to ask people

like Admiral Mullen, Ambassador Holbrooke, and others: Aren't you

concerned that a big troop build-up in Afghanistan may well further

destabilize Pakistan? And wouldn't that be more serious? They

couldn't deny it. And today, Prime Minister Gilani of Pakistan

specifically stated that he was concerned that the increase of troops

in Afghanistan could further destabilize Pakistan.

So the purpose of all this here is to protect Americans, is to do

the best thing in terms of our national security. And the question

is: Is this troop build-up a good idea in light of the entire global

strategy of going after Al Qaida? Al Qaida is not principally based

in Afghanistan anymore and so I have a very serious question about

     this.

There are also reports that the president may be talking about a

timeframe of three years to bring the troops home. Now, I would be

very much in favor of this. I had an article in The Wall Street

Journal in August saying we ought to have a flexible timetable to

bring the troops home, but I don't see how that dovetails with

increasing our American troop presence in the next couple of years to

     over 100,000.

So I'm terribly concerned about this. I'll give the president a

chance to articulate his views, but I think the group of us here and

many others will be taking action if, in fact, the decision has been

made to greatly increase the troops in that area.

         Congressman McGovern?

MCGOVERN: Like Senator Feingold, I want to first commend the

president for thinking long and hard about this issue. That kind of

deliberation is a welcome change from the previous administration.

Unfortunately, if the reports are true, I believe he has reached

the wrong conclusion. Sending 34,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan

will make it 34,000 times harder to extricate ourselves from this

mess. If our fight is truly with Al Qaida, then we're in the wrong

country. They have moved to Pakistan. I've seen this movie before

and it doesn't have a happy ending.

President Karzai is corrupt and incompetent. He cheated in the

most recent election, and I don't want any more American servicemen or

-women to risk their lives for his corrupt government. And I'm a

little bit stunned by the quick and inexplicable pivot by some in the

administration from rightly denouncing Karzai's behavior to now

embracing him as our dear friend.

I think our support for Karzai actually discredits us with the

Afghan people. The cost of this escalation will be enormous both in

terms of blood and treasure. At a time of great economic crisis here

in the United States, I would respectfully suggest that rather than

nation-building in Afghanistan, we should do a little more nation-

     building here at home.

Finally, if the president is indeed going to request a major

escalation in U.S. military forces, and I hope the reports are wrong,

I would urge that before a single additional troop is sent that

Congress have a chance to fully debate his proposal and have an up or

down vote. This is a big deal. This is a major escalation, and

Congress has a major role to play.

JONES: Senator, thank you very much. I'm pleased to join. I'm

a Republican and I've got Camp Lejeune Marine Base in my district,

Cherry Point Marine Air Station and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base

where these Marines and servicemen in the district love America.

     There's no question about it.

I'm here today because of my concern that we're about to wear out

and break the military. I've spoken to generals from the past. I've

spoken to officers who are now in the military. And we are about the

     wear out the military.

I did write the president a few weeks ago and I thanked him. As

my colleagues have just said, I thanked the president for taking his

time, with the hopes -- and we'll find out tonight exactly what his

proposal will be, but let me read a couple comments and then I'm going

     to cease.

Marine Sergeant Doug Copeland, who is scheduled to deploy with

the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, in October, said he approved of the

troop surge as a means to assist troops already on the ground, but

believed a date for leaving the country was coming too late.

Now I would like to quote a Navy corpsman down at Camp Lejeune,

currently with the Combat Logistics Regiment 27, who said he doubted

the proposed timeline would see troops out of Afghanistan.

"Now," to quote the corpsman, "as far as a proposed date for

2013, that's not going to happen."

This is why I agree with Senator Feingold, my friend Jim

McGovern, and my friend Barbara Lee. We need, as a Congress, to

debate this issue. We have, for too long, forgotten the Constitution.

The Constitution says, "to declare war."

Here we have been in Afghanistan and Iraq seven and eight years,

and now we're going to ask our military to continue to go there.

We've got to have an end point to this strategy or there is no

     strategy.

Thank you for letting me be a small part of this. Thank you,

     Senator.

         FEINGOLD: Congressman Lee?

LEE: Thank you very much. Let me also thank Senator Feingold

and Congressman Jones and Congressman McGovern for their leadership

and for standing today united in opposition to any escalation in

     troops in Afghanistan.

As one who'd, in 2001, voted against the authorization to use

force -- because I believed then, as I believe now, that any open-

ended military escalation and conflict would lead not to an increase

in our national security but harden and create more anger and more

     hostility in the world.

And eight years later, we're seeing this take place,

     unfortunately.

I have introduced H.R. 3699, that would just basically deny the

funding for any increase in troop levels.

Now, I'm very realistic about how much of a chance we have to

move that through Congress, but I think we need to debate, fully

debate, as my colleagues have said, what this means in terms of blood

     and treasure.

As the daughter of a military officer, I support our troops. But

I tell you one thing. We recognize, and Senator Feingold laid this

out, in terms of our troops being put in harm's way and what the real

strategy should be, and it's Pakistan.

We, many of us, believe in nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear

disarmament. That's the way we move forward in seeking global peace

and security, not in escalating a conflict where the British and the

Soviets historically have shown is no win, militarily.

And so I, too, commend the president for being deliberative in

this process, for taking his time. As an earlier -- as an early

supporter of President Obama, I believe that it's our duty and

responsibility, here in a democracy, to respectfully disagree when we

believe that we can move forward in a new direction.

So I just want to thank my colleagues for their leadership and

for calling us all together to let our voices be heard. Thank you.

         FEINGOLD: Questions?

QUESTION: Senator Feingold, forgive me. I walked in as you were

talking (OFF-MIKE) but you were saying (OFF-MIKE) true that you were

going to (OFF-MIKE) some action in the Senate. What kind of action

     will you be taking?

FEINGOLD: Well, action can include, obviously, not permitting

funding for additional troops. It can include resolutions for time

frames to withdraw troops, as many of us have worked on together with

regard to Iraq and other approaches that we'd be open to.

But, as far as I'm concerned, everything would be on the table,

in terms of trying to prevent this error from occurring.

QUESTION: Senator, you still would need 41 votes to stop

advancing the bill that would pay for the troop escalation. Do you

think that you have those votes?

FEINGOLD: I can't say that I have them right now. This is the

first event I know of where a group of -- bipartisan group of members

from both houses have raised questions about this possible policy.

But I can tell you this. I was just at our Democratic Conference

lunch, and I spoke out on this. And I won't say who said what, but

the number of people who joined me in expressing these very concerns

     was significant.

Many members of my caucus and, I believe, members of the

Republican Caucus, perhaps from different philosophical perspectives,

will come to the same conclusion, that this is a mistake to move in

the direction of this huge troop buildup.

So I -- I think it's possible it will be a bipartisan vote that

     could prevent such funding.

JONES: Just very quickly, we all were home for the Thanksgiving

holidays. And I'm not exaggerating. When we were home during the

Thanksgiving holidays, I cannot tell you the number of people -- and

I'm not exaggerating -- that said, "What are we trying to accomplish

in Afghanistan? How about our country? We can't even fix the streets

     in your district, Congressman."

We need to start thinking about that. The cost of this is

astronomical. The cost to the wounded, both physically and mentally,

is going to be astronomical. We've got to have an end point to what

     we're trying to accomplish.

FEINGOLD: And on that point, I'll just add that the president

has said he wants to send in these additional troops to finish the

job. I say, and I think the American people say, what job?

What's the job that he's talking about? That's not at all clear.

QUESTION: To the House members, do you think there are votes in

the House now, on a bipartisan basis to lock such a deployment or to

not pay for the troops through a supplemental?

LEE: Let me say, first, as a member of the Appropriations

Committee, I understand the political dynamics of appropriating money

for wars. However, I introduced H.R. 3699 a couple months ago, and,

     you know, we have 23, 24 co-sponsors.

And, basically, what that resolution says is no additional funds

will be appropriated for any escalation or any more troops to be send

     to Afghanistan.

And I talked to my colleagues who want to sign on, haven't signed

on yet. But I tell you, this is one time where I think that we see,

on both sides of the aisle, some unreadiness.

The American public -- what, over 50 percent of the American

public, they're war-weary. They understand what the costs are, in

terms of not only our treasure but also in terms of the lives of our

     brave young men and women.

MCGOVERN: And let me -- and let me just add that, you know, both

the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee and the Defense

Appropriations Committee have said that this will require a

     supplemental package.

The president's going to have to request additional funds beyond

     what exist.

And as I said in my opening statement, it is my hope that the

president will submit his request to Congress before he sends an

additional troop to Afghanistan. And I would hope that the speaker of

the house and the Senate majority leader and the minority leaders of

both the House and Senate would agree to that.

We should have a full debate. This is about war. And we should

have a full debate and a thorough debate, and then we will see where

     the votes are.

I will tell you this -- and I think Walter and Barbara will back

me up on this in terms of our colleagues in the House -- even amongst

people who are saying that they feel they might have no choice but to

support the president's package, there is an uneasiness. People are

     really concerned about this.

You know, there's no clarity to the policy. Hopefully we'll get

clarity tonight, and maybe we'll even get the outlines of how the

president envisions this coming to an end.

But, you know, 35,000 additional troops is a big deal. This is a

major escalation. And it's going to be 35,000 times harder to

extricate them from this -- from this conflict.

QUESTION: Congressman McGovern, how much political capital would

the president expend, giving that monies (ph) in this, if he did

     extract a win on this?

         MCGOVERN: If he -- I don't...

QUESTION: If he won on this? If he did win the funding from

     Congress.

MCGOVERN: How much political capital would he -- well, look, I

     mean, I'm a -- I'm a big fan of the president's. I mean, I -- you

know, this is -- you know, this is not -- you know, to me, you know, I

mean, there's a lot of things he's doing that I think are quite

extraordinary and I'm going to support him on.

And I appreciate that he's deliberated long and hard over this.

But I think he's come to the wrong conclusion.

And -- and, you know, what I fear is that we're getting sucked

into a war with no end. And that's what our constituents are telling

us, you know, when we go back home -- what's going on here? I thought

you were going after Al Qaida.

Well, General Jones tells us that there's virtually no Al Qaida

     members in Afghanistan.

Then why are we having this major surge?

I mean, there's a lot of -- a lot of uneasiness and confusion

amongst the American people. But I will tell you, I do not think that

this is the right thing to do. And I think a lot of members, you

know, should have the -- the members should have the opportunity to

vote up or down, and we shouldn't have to vote on this after the

     deployment has begun.

LEE: Let me just go back, quickly, to the funding. We're in the

middle of -- the Senate is debating a health care reform. You know

the debate in terms of our deficit, in terms of resources.

We have a huge unemployment rate in our country. We have to look

at better strategies in terms of our national security.

I believe, as many have said, that we're talking about not 34,000

to 40,000 additional troops, but many have indicated over time this

would take eight to 10 years, possibly 400,000 to 500,000 troops, to

finish whatever job that needs to be finished.

And so I'm concerned that we're going to engage once again in a

-- in a debate and in a funding strategy that's going to create more

in terms of our deficit and, once again, take away from many of the

domestic needs that we have right here at home.

QUESTION: Senator Feingold, the president will apparently

propose a three-year (inaudible) and move these troops (inaudible).

Could you react to this? (inaudible)?

FEINGOLD: I really don't believe that this president would take

such a serious step as a time frame to remove the troops to pacify

members of Congress. He's doing what he thinks is right. We disagree

     with the particular decision.

I think what happened is President Obama was given a series of

choices, none of which suggested getting out of there. All of them

were about escalation or the status quo. And finally, as I understand

it, he said, "that's not right. Let's take a look at some ideas that

have to do with us actually not having an open-ended commitment."

So I give him credit for that. What I don't understand is how

that squares with a situation where we had only 30,000 troops there at

the end of last year. We have 70,000 now. This will push us over

100,000. That doesn't even include the NATO troops. I don't see how

     those two fit together.

But I am grateful apparently that there is some conversation

about a timetable, which is precisely what I think would make sense in

     this context.

QUESTION: Senator Lugar made the statement, speaking of

(inaudible). Do you think it would be wise to put the health care

debate aside and bring something to the floor to begin (inaudible)

     about money (inaudible).

(UNKNOWN): No. I think we need to finish the health care bill,

but I think we have to show the capacity to do a couple of things at

once, and if necessary we could have some debate with regard to this,

with a time certain early next year to have a thorough debate. But I

do not think we should delay the health care bill in the Senate.

QUESTION: If you don't want to see escalation of troops, ideally

what would you like to hear the president say tonight?

(UNKNOWN): I'd like to see him propose a timeframe to withdraw

our troops in, I hope, a shorter period than three years, and to

acknowledge that it doesn't make sense for us in terms of our national

security to keep pouring all these resources; that it's a great

concept to try to nation-build Afghanistan, but it probably wouldn't

work and, in fact, it cannot possibly be our number one international

or domestic priority given the pressures we're facing.

LEE: Let me just say, I hope also that the balance would change

in terms of a military strategy versus the diplomatic and economic

strategies. When we saw the supplemental several months ago, we saw a

nine-to-one on the military in terms of the increase of troops, and

very little in terms of the diplomatic and the political strategies in

terms of the funding. So I would hope to see that balance shift

     today.

         (CROSSTALK)

         QUESTION: Congressman McGovern?

         MCGOVERN: Yes?

QUESTION: (inaudible). Is that enough for you? Does that

     mitigate this escalation (inaudible)?

MCGOVERN: No, no. One is I will applaud him for trying to

devise an exit strategy. And again, saying that you have an exit

strategy and actually having a strategy are two different things, so

we'll have to hear the details tonight.

But I think it is important that -- that, any time you go to war,

that there's -- that you have a clearly defined mission, a beginning,

a middle, a transition period and an end.

So if he can do that tonight, I think that's an -- I would -- I

     would applaud that.

However, it doesn't change the fact that I think that sending

35,000 more troops to Afghanistan is fundamentally wrong. I think

     this is a mistake.

And, you know -- and again, I -- we don't know. We haven't done

any whip counts. We don't know where the votes are. We do know that

there's a lot of uneasiness. We do know that people who have gone --

who were home for the Thanksgiving, we're hearing from the

constituents about how concerned they are about this.

So I hope -- I hope there's more clarity to the policy because

there hasn't been. I hope he can better define the mission. But, for

me, sending additional troops is a mistake.

         FEINGOLD: Thank you very much.

         END

Hope Goes To WAR??? This Is NUTS!

Hope Goes To WAR??? This Is NUTS!

Obamas Af-Pak is as Whack as Bushs Iraq

Black Agenda Report 2 December 2009 by Glen Ford President Obama has reached a watershed in his presidency: he has devolved to the intellectual level of George Bush, while retaining his world class powers of speech. History may remember Obama as just another vapid but predatory imperialist president who happens to besuperficially eloquent. Unfortunately, the clarity of Obamas diction is not matched by coherence of policy. Af-Pak is at least as whack as Bushs Iraq.

More occupation means less occupation.

Barack Obamas oratorical skills have turned on him, revealing, as George Bushs low-grade delivery never could, the perfect incoherence of the current American imperial project in South Asia. Bushs verbal eccentricities served to muddy his entire message, leaving the observer wondering what was more ridiculous, the speechmaker or the speech. There is no such confusion when Obama is on the mic. His flawless delivery of superbly structured sentences provides no distractions, requiring the brain to examine the content the policy in question on its actual merits.

The conclusion comes quickly: the U.S. imperial enterprise in Afghanistan and Pakistan is doomed, as well as evil.

The presidents speech to West Point cadets was a stream of non sequitors so devoid of logic as to cast doubt on the sanity of the authors. These additional American and international troops, said the president, will allow us to accelerate handing over responsibility to Afghan forces, and allow us to begin the transfer of our forces out of Afghanistan in July of 2011.

Obama claims that, the faster an additional 30,000 Americans pour into Afghanistan, the quicker will come the time when they will leave. More occupation means less occupation, you see? This breakneck intensification of the U.S. occupation is necessary, Obama explains, because We have no interest in occupying your country.

The U.S. imperial enterprise in Afghanistan and Pakistan is doomed, as well as evil.

If the Americans were truly interested in occupying Afghanistan, the logic goes, they would slow down and stretch out the process over many years, rather than mount an 18-month surge of Taliban-hunting. The Afghans are advised to hold still the pulsating surge will be over before they know it.

At present, of course, the Americans have assumed all responsibility for Afghanistan so much so that President Hamid Karzai only learned about Obamas plans earlier on Tuesday during a one-hour tele-briefing. This is consistent with Obamas detailed plans for Afghan liberation, under U.S. tutelage. The president is as wedded to high stakes testing of occupied peoples as he is for American public school children. This effort must be based on performance. The days of providing a blank check are over, said the Occupier-in-Chief. He continued:

And going forward, we will be clear about what we expect from those who receive our assistance. We will support Afghan Ministries, Governors, and local leaders that combat corruption and deliver for the people. We expect those who are ineffective or corrupt to be held accountable.

Such rigorous oversight of their countrys affairs should keep Afghan minds off the fact that they have been fighting to remain independent of foreign rule for centuries, if not millennia. If Obama is right, Afghans might also be distracted from dwelling on the question of who their Ministries, Governors, and local leaders are answerable to the Afghan people or the Americans?

Obama advises Afghans to be patient and trusting regarding their sovereignty.

Although President Obama is anxious to bring U.S. troop levels above 100,000 as quickly as possible, he advises Afghans to be patient and trusting regarding their sovereignty. It will be clear to the Afghan government, and, more importantly, to the Afghan people, that they will ultimately be responsible for their own country. That is, it will become clear in the fullness of time, but hopefully no later than 18 months after the planned surge begins. If all goes well, the Taliban will be dead or nearly so, and the non-Taliban Afghans will be prepared to begin assuming responsibility for their own country. If not, then the Americans will be forced to continue as occupiers reluctantly, of course, since, as the whole world and the more intelligent class of Afghans know, the Americans have no interest in occupying your country unless they have to.

Mobilizing for Universal Health Care for ALL

When we organize so we pull together
we can win Universal Health Care for ALL

PDA/DFA Progressive Democracy South Jersey 22 November 2009 by Joanne ONeill We have had a tremendous first phase of the Mobilization for Health Care for All, exceeding all expectations. We thank you all for your tremendous participation and hope you will continue to stay active and support our efforts as we move forward.

After consulting among the national leadership and with local health care reform organizations we've decided on next steps for the Mobilization. The health care bills being considered by Congress are seriously flawed see HCN's statement on the bill also posted here below. One area where there is a possibility for improvement is allowing states to enact a health care system with the government as a single payer. As a result right now, in addition to supporting the first vote on single-payer legislation in the Senate (S703), we want to focus on senators to demand they include a provision to allow single-payer systems at the state-level. Senators throughout the country should hear from you on this important issue. This is the path to truly universal, equitable health care for all.

Here's the plan: next week your group should contact your senators to urge them to support an amendment to the bill to allow states to enact single-payer universal medicare for all. We will be sharing a click and send letter to support this demand that you will be able to send to advocates in your community next week. And, you should tell your senator you will be back on December 10th, Human Rights Day, to find out the senator's answer and make the point that health care is a human right. On Human Rights Day, advocates for real health care reform will rally and some will sit-in at senator's offices to demand that states be allowed to enact single-payer health care programs; Medicare for All!

An amendment allowing states to enact single-payer would be a powerful challenge to insurance industry domination of health care. Such an amendment would grant a waiver of the application of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), which has been used by the insurance industry to challenge real reform at the local level. They know that when a state enacts single-payer and demonstrates it is effective, saves money, allows all residents to choose whatever doctor, health provider or hospital they want and gives people real health security, it will become a model for national health care reform.

We plan to continue to pressure Congress on this issue throughout the legislative process, so join us now to build the momentum for real health care reform: improved Medicare for All.

We need your help to keep the Mobilization moving forward and effectively make the case for improved Medicare for All, the only real solution to America's health care problems. We are coming into a crucial phase of the year and need to escalate our efforts to make sure the voice of America, single payer is heard. Please click HERE to donate now. Thank you for your support.

Dear Sister & Brother Patriots,

It's time for us to plan our thing for our December 14th Holiday Party Meeting!
Click that link to see our posting about it. Now you know it's our policy never to demand money or contributions of any sort in order to be with us. But for those who can help, we need to coordinate some food to have on hand.

Please get in touch with me -Hutch info@... - phone 973.406.7827 - about that. We could definitely use some help with food etc. And also we need to take Ann Benedetto's advice on how to grow the numbers of our members, and there's no better time than to invite some friends to come with you on the 14th. Music, food, drink and so many good souls, let's do it!

Barbara Boxer's Petition to Save Women's Control of Their Lives

On November 7, the House passed the Stupak Amendment to their health care reform bill, representing one of the biggest setbacks to womens health in recent decades unless we stand together and stop it.

That's why I just signed the petition Senator Barbara Boxer has launched at www.FightForWomensHealth.com, calling for the removal of the Stupak Amendment from any bill that reaches the President's desk.

The House amendment would tell women who participate in the new health insurance exchange that they can't even use their own funds to buy a policy that offers abortion coverage.

In short, the Stupak Amendment would take away health insurance coverage that women already have. This is a huge step back for womens health.

Join me and Senator Boxer at www.FightForWomensHealth.com today!

Thank you!

U.S. Students Help Win Great Victory for Sweatshop Garment Workers!

United Students Against Sweatshops celebrate a great victory!

United Students Against Sweatshops 18 November 2009 WE WON! Honduran Union Signs Historic Agreement With Russell Athletic!

JUST OVER A YEAR AGO, RUSSELL ATHLETIC ANNOUNCED IT WOULD CLOSE Jerzees de Honduras in response to workers organizing efforts. During that year, USAS organized the largest boycott in the history of modern student activism. Now, as a direct result of our efforts, we have won an unprecedented victory the company has agreed to meet worker demands to reopen the factory and re-hire all 1200 workers, who have been without jobs for 10 months or more. View the details of the agreement here.

Landmark Victory: A Precedent is Set

This is one of the most significant youth-led campaign victories in recent times and one of the most significant campaign victories of the global justice movement. No one has ever forced a multinational corporation to reopen a facility it shut down in the global race to the bottom. This victory has also proven that together, we can successfully fight back when those in power take advantage of the economic crisis to attack working people. We should take strength and inspiration from the example of the workers of Jerzees de Honduras. We can fight back and WIN against policies that benefit a privileged few and hurt our communities.

Thank You!
Your campus organizing, e-mails, faxes, phone calls, direct action and donations were essential to winning this campaign. We are standing on the shoulders of previous generations of activists. We built on top of USAS victories of the past twelve years, from the sit-ins in the late 1990s that resulted in supply chain transparency and university labor codes of conduct to the formation of the Worker Rights Consortium in 2000. As Russell and SITRAJERZEESH work to implement this agreement, please continue to support our efforts by making a tax-deductible donation to USAS. We need your continued support to sustain our movement.

The struggle continues! La lucha sigue!

In solidarity,
United Students Against Sweatshops

Details of the Historic Victory by Honduran Factory Workers

The factory workers of Jerzees de Honduras and their union SITRAJERZEESH reached an unprecedented settlement with Russell Athletic after United Students Against Sweatshops waged the largest boycott in the history of modern student activism. Details include:

The factory will be reopened in Choloma and be renamed Jerzees Nuevo Dia (New Day).

Russell will immediately recognize the union of Jerzees de Honduras workers, SITRAJERZEESH, and has committed to collectively bargaining in good faith.

Russell will rehire all 1200 former Jerzees de Honduras workers, either at Jerzees Nuevo Dia or other Russell facilities.

The company has also agreed to a policy of non-interference and union neutrality in all Russell and Fruit of the Loom facilities in Honduras and will work with the Honduran union federation the Centro General de Trabajadores to provide access to organizers and educate employees on their right to freedom of association. Labor Fight Ends in Win for Students

New York Times 18 November 2009 by Steven Greenhouse The agreement was unprecedented in terms of scope and size and in the transformative impact it can have in one of the hardest regions of the world to win respect for workers rights.

The anti-sweatshop movement at dozens of American universities, from Georgetown to U.C.L.A., has had plenty of idealism and energy, but not many victories.

Until now.

No times better than RIGHT NOW!
No times better than RIGHT NOW!

The often raucous student movement announced on Tuesday that it had achieved its biggest victory by far. Its pressure tactics persuaded one of the nations leading sportswear companies, Russell Athletic, to agree to rehire 1,200 workers in Honduras who lost their jobs when Russell closed their factory soon after the workers had unionized.

From the time Russell shut the factory last January, the anti-sweatshop coalition orchestrated a nationwide campaign against the company. Most important, the coalition, United Students Against Sweatshops, persuaded the administrations of Boston College, Columbia, Harvard, New York University, Stanford, Michigan, North Carolina and 89 other colleges and universities to sever or suspend their licensing agreements with Russell. The agreements some yielding more than $1 million in sales allowed Russell to put university logos on T-shirts, sweatshirts and fleeces.

Going beyond their campuses, student activists picketed the N.B.A. finals in Orlando and Los Angeles this year to protest the leagues licensing agreement with Russell. They distributed fliers inside Sports Authority sporting goods stores and sent Twitter messages to customers of Dicks Sporting Goods to urge them to boycott Russell products.

The students even sent activists to knock on Warren Buffetts door in Omaha because his company, Berkshire Hathaway, owns Fruit of the Loom, Russells parent company.

Dear Friends,

This is an emergency.  The NJ Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) is about to approve the renewal of the Newark incinerator operated by Covanta in the Ironbound section. Trash for this incinerator comes from all over Essex County and from New York City.   It is shocking that this renewal contract, if left as it is now, will allow 13,140 pounds of lead (which is 6.57 tons) and 210 lbs of mercury to be emitted into the air EACH YEAR!!!  There are other deadly pollutants that are allowed as well;  it is also shocking to know how low the standards of emissions are, that Covanta has violated even these and that the NJDEP rarely monitors this incinerator.

Newark is therefore subject to severe pollution because this does not include the hundreds of trucks that rumble through every hour bringing trash to the incinerator, hauling goods and equipment to stores and the port, all the while emitting vast quantities of pollution and soot which damage lungs and health in general.

The incinerator is very dangerous to children who are subject to brain damage from the lead and mercury in the air, to high rates of asthma and other illnesses.   According to the Environmental Protection Agency,  Essex County ranks #3 in NJ in major environmental hazards per square mile; the incinerator adds seriously to this problem.  Although I live in Bloomfield, not Newark, I know that air blows, so all of us in the vicinity are at risk

People are urged to send comments to the NJDEP on the need to shut down this incinerator ar at least closely regulate it until it is shut down.  Please read the email below that was sent out by BlueWaveNJ with details on how you can do this.

THE DEP WILL ONLY ACCEPT COMMENTS UNTIL THE END OF THE DAY ON THURS., NOV.19TH, SO TIME IS SHORT.  It is best to write something rather than sign the petition below, but if you don't have time, it is better than nothing.  You will notice that you may need to fax your letter to the DEP and then send a hard copy.  (They are making it very hard for citizen input.)

I strongly recommend that you read at least part of the testimony of Peter Montegue on the severe damage this incinerator poses to children.  He is the head of the Environmental Research Foundation in NJ.  It is the second link below.

Thanks for whatever you can do to help make the NJDEP and Covanta accountable to the people of Essex County and beyond.  (I am sending my letter today, so it will have enough time to get there before the deadline.)

Jane (Califf)
Essex County Green Party
P.S.  I attach a fact sheet on the history of this incinerator distributed by the Ironbound Community Corporation in Newark.

----------------------------------------------------------

Hi All,

An important local action update.  Please sign the petition.

The licensing permit for the Newark incinerator is up for renewal. This facility, where all our garbage is taken and burned, is a major source of pollution and a health hazard.  The facility lacks state of the art pollution control equipment and has been in frequent violation of various codes. The NJ Department of Environmental Protection is apparently about to rubberstamp the permit approval.  However, concerned local residents and activists are calling for action and need our support to ensure the NJ DEP does the right thing.

Please sign the petition asking that the NJ DEP do a better job to protect the environment and the health of the citizens of Newark.  The petition is at this link:

www.greenmontclair.org/greenmontclair/Actions/Entries/2009/11/15_Petition_to_the_NJ_EPA_Regarding_the_Newark_Incinerator.html

Read the moving testimony about the consequences of heavy metal poisoning from the incinerator presented by Peter Montague at the recent hastily convened and poorly publicized public hearing on the permit renewal application. The testimony is posted on the blog at:

www.greenmontclair.org/greenmontclair/The_Blog/Entries/2009/11/15_The_Newark_Incinerator__164_Million_Toxic_Lead_Bullets_Shot_Every_Day_at_the_Children_of_Newark.html

Please also consider writing a letter to the NJ DEP.  Letters should be addressed to:

Fax the letter to 609-292-1028 and then send the original by regular mail.

We only have 3 days to make our voices heard---the window for public comments closes on Thursday, November 19th.  Please forward this email and call for action.

Please RSVP for any of these calls here. https://www.thedatabank.com/dpg/309/mtglist.asp?formid=meet&mtgview=L

3. PLEASE HELP PDA TO CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR PROGRESSIVES

a) Together with our allies, PDA kept single-payer healthcare alive much longer than anyone thought possible, which demonstrates its majority support. PDA never wavered, they never strayed from our goal, together we made tangible progress--please help us carry on. https://www.thedatabank.com/dpg/309/mtglist.asp?formid=meet&mtgview=L

b) Being a grassroots organization, PDA counts on the membership for their funds. No doubt the down turn in the economy has had a draining effect on the budget, making it difficult at times to meet just the standard obligations of paying for the database, let alone trying to meet payroll for the few paid staff members. Currently there are only 7......yeah you heard me right.....ONLY SEVEN !!!! sustainers in New Jersey....to me that is shameful !!!!! So other than my hubby and I giving monthly, there are only 6 others in NJ.

If you want PDA to continue the fight for Progressives, I suggest you think about contributing !!!!

Donations can be made on a one time basis,

or you can choose to become a hange Makes Change sustainer and have an amount charged to your credit card or checking account automatically every week, month, or quarter (three months).

Even the smallest monthly contribution of $5.00 from each member would mean allot. How do you think Obama managed to raise so much for his campaign? At least with PDA you know we are fighting for the you....and a progressive agenda.....and not for some snake oil salesman. [ If only half of the 200,000 members gave $5 per month that would be $500,000 or $6 million per year. We could really give Progressives a voice with that amount. Just think what we could do if more than half  of 100,000 gave more than $5.00....WOW ..... members of Congress would know we are a force to be reckoned with]

c) Instead of donating to the DCCC - DSCC DNC send your money to where we are working to elect Progressive candidates like Marcy Winograd: http://www.winograd4congress.com/

MoveOn's most recent mailing will raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to support incumbents who voted for the bad healthcare bill.

PDA hope to raise tens of thousands of dollars to back only candidates who support Medicare for All and women's reproductive rights.  http://pdamerica.org/articles/misc/2008-01-24-01-07-46-misc.php

That's all for now but keep pushing Lautenberg and Menendez to support Bernie Sanders in his single-payer fight in the Senate. http://capwiz.com/pdamerica/issues/alert/?alertid=14212486

LIVE WEBCAST Trumka Launches AFL-CIO Jobs Initiative Nov. 17th

DONT MOURN, ORGANIZE!

AFL-CIO NOW Blog
16 November 2009 by Seth Michaels Watch the live webcast at aflcio.org/createjobs starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, November 17th.

Tomorrow morning, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka will announce a major new initiative to create and save jobs.

Trumka will be part of a noted panel in Spotlight on the Jobs Crisis at the Economic Policy Institute (EPI).

With unemployment at its highest rate in more than 20 years, Trumka says America needs bold, quick action to put people back to work, in addition to longer term, structural fixes for our economy. The AFL-CIO initiative he announces will include calls to extend help for the unemployed, rebuild the nations infrastructure, provide aid to struggling states and communities, create federally funded community-based jobs and increase lending to small and medium-sized businesses to spur job creation.

Other panelists, representing constituencies particularly hard hit by the current economic crisis, are

Deepak Bhargava, executive director of the Center for Community Change
Wade Henderson, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights
Benjamin Todd Jealous, president and CEO of the NAACP
Janet Murgua, president and CEO of the National Council of La Raza
Lawrence Mishel, EPI president, will moderate.

The Spotlight on the Jobs Crisis and Trumkas announcement come as President Obama is preparing for the December jobs summit on job creation. According to the latest data, the official unemployment rate of 10.2 percent rises to 17.5 percent when the underemployed are included.
Tune in tomorrow, 9a.m. Tuesday, November 17th at
aflcio.org/createjobs
for this critical conversation on the future of our economy and jobs.

For the rest of us, this will be an indictment on the Bush/Cheney administration

Tony Blair to face Iraq probe early next year

LONDON --- Former prime minister Tony Blair is to be called to give evidence to an inquiry into the Iraq war, officials announced on Friday, six years after he controversially backed the US-led invasion.

Blair will be among senior figures from the ruling Labour Party to go before the independent inquiry early next year, just months before the next general election in June, which the party is tipped to lose.

John Chilcot, a former civil servant who heads the inquiry, said the first five weeks of public sessions, starting on November 24, would hear from senior officials and military officers.

"We will ask them to explain the main decisions and tasks, and their involvement," Chilcot said.

"That will give us a clear understanding of how policy developed and was implemented, and what consideration was given to alternative approaches."

Families of soldiers killed in Iraq have already warned they intend to confront Blair at the hearings over his support as premier for the war.

Blair, who has vowed to cooperate "fully" with the probe, faced intense public hostility after backing then US president George W. Bush in the 2003 invasion to topple Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

His resulting unpopularity was one of the main factors which led to him quitting in 2007.

His successor Gordon Brown announced the probe in June, honouring a pledge to hold one after troops had pulled out of Iraq.

Brown initially said the inquiry would be held in private but was forced into an embarrassing U-turn within days. He also had to backtrack after saying it would not "apportion blame."

The inquiry will examine the circumstances leading up to Britain's decision under Blair to support the invasion, and its aftermath.

The probe will seek access to government records and will also hear from the families of the 179 British troops who died in Iraq.

Blair and government ministers will be called in January and early February. The inquiry's report will not be published until the end of 2010, or even 2011. There have already been two main official probes into elements surrounding the run-up to the invasion.

UPDATE ON ROVE CYBER GATE
More Questions Raised About Death Of Bush Cyber Expert Mike Connell
Join Our Call For A Federal Criminal Investigation!

Eleven months ago, Bush IT guru Mike Connell was killed in a single engine plane crash shortly after being forced to testify in a civil deposition alleging fraud in the 2004 election. According to legal filings prior to the crash, Mr. Connell had received threats from Karl Rove and warnings not to talk. We have been covering this case in great detail at www.RoveCyberGate.com
Now in a new development, Mr. Connell's wife and sister have spoken out together about their serious doubts that the crash was simply an accident. They disclosed that the FBI recently received a document from a black ops "assassination jackal" tipster who alleges that Mr. Connell's plane was sabotaged while sitting at the airport prior to his last flight. Former ABC News reporter Rebecca Abrahams broke these developments Monday on The BRAD BLOG.
Today, we are renewing our call for a full federal investigation into the allegations of election fraud made against Mr. Connell, Karl Rove, Jeff Averbeck and other GOP conspirators, and expanding that call to include a criminal investigation into Connell's death. According to Mr. Connell's his family, Mike's best friend and confidant was none other than Barry Jackson, Karl Rove's deputy and George Bush's head of political strategies who was implicated in the White House email scandal. Stephen Spoonamore, a top expert in the field of cyber security, said last year that Mr. Connell had asked him how to permanently destroy White House emails.

There are many questions that need to be answered in this matter that can only be discovered by a criminal investigation with people called before a grand jury. Below are two essays on a plan to create global copyright rules that would put many blogging practices at risk. The Obama administration appears to be planning to suppress free speech on the internet.

Does anyone know more about this, or know of any activists working on this?

ACTA--A Patriot Act For the Internet

By James Love
Director, Knowledge Ecology International
Posted: Nov. 4, 2009

This week 40 or so countries are meeting in South Korea to consider text for a new international agreement on the enforcement of intellectual property rights. It is called the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). The term "counterfeiting" is designed to demonize the agreement critics as friends of organized crime, much like the name of the Patriot Act seemed better than the "Elimination of Civil Liberties Act." It is really an agreement that addresses a wide range of intellectual property enforcement issues -- involving patents, copyrights, trademarks and other IPR. (Details here http://keionline.org/acta)

If you are a lowly member of the public, the text is secret. The names of persons who attend the meetings are secret. The titles of the documents are secret. If you represent a big firm or law firm -- pretty much any big firm it seems, the U.S. government will show you documents after you sign a non-disclosure agreement - curbing your right to speak out on the contents of the documents you see.

Some details of the negotiation have leaked out, most recently from a memo by Euopean Union describing the Obama Administration proposal for a new global system of Internet controls and liabilities. Michael Geist, Gwen Hienz of EFF, and a few journalists -- most living outside of the U.S., have written about ACTA.

The entire U.S. tech sector has been publicly silent, as the Obama administration has co-oped them into trading silence for access to the secret documents.

At this point, Congress needs to stand up and put an end to this appalling spectacle of secret legislation on a global scale. How can politicians claim to be all for transparency, and allow this indefensible violation of the public right to know proceed?

A large number of organizations and people have written President Obama asking that he end the secrecy of the negotiation. It is doubtful this will happen unless newspapers write about the issue (aren't they big advocates of the right to know?), members of Congress weigh in, or if the critics of the secret negotiation can mobilize public opinion.

There is a lot at stake. Civil rights, privacy, rules for injunctions and damages against businesses and individuals, chilling of speech, the first sale doctrine, the global movement of medicines and other commodities, etc, will all be impacted by this ridiculously secret negotiation.

Earth to politicians -- you work for us, not the International Chamber of Commerce. Make this negotiation public!

Secret copyright treaty leaks. It's bad. Very bad.

By Cory Doctorow

In the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, the chapter on the internet appears to be a secret copyright treaty whose text Obama's administration refused to disclose due to "national security" concerns. Now it has been leaked.

*Internet Service Providers must proactively police the copyrights on user-contributed material. This means that it will be impossible to run a service like Flickr or YouTube or Blogger, since hiring enough lawyers to ensure that the mountain of material uploaded every second isn't infringing will exceed any hope of profitability.

*Internet Service Providers must cut off Internet access of accused copyright infringers or face liability. This means that your entire family could be denied to the internet -- and hence to civic participation, health information, education, communications, and their means of earning a living -- if one member is accused of copyright infringement, without access to a trial or counsel.

*The whole world must adopt US-style "notice-and-takedown" rules that require Internet Service Providers to remove any material that is accused -- again, without evidence or trial -- of infringing copyright. This has proved a disaster in the US and other countries, where it provides an easy means of censoring material, just by accusing it of infringing copyright.

*Mandatory prohibitions on breaking DRM, even if doing so for a lawful purpose (e.g., to make a work available to disabled people; for archival preservation; because you own the copyrighted work that is locked up with DRM)

Patient Privacy Rights Will Be On CBS' Early Show
Next Friday, November 20th, 2009

Just yesterday, PPR's debut on CBS' Early Show was rescheduled to NEXT Friday, November 20th. Founder and chair of Patient Privacy Rights (PPR), Dr. Deborah Peel, will be on discussing electronic health records and privacy.  Dr. Peel recently testified in September before the HIT Policy Committee, one of two committees deciding how our records will go digital in the near future.  You can see her testimony here.

"Americans care deeply about privacy and controlling their personal information. Put simply, we want the power to decide who can see our own private, personal medical records and what can be done with them," Deborah Peel, MD.

The Early Show airs from 7:00-9:00 a.m. EST.  After it airs, there will be a link to the interview on the PPR website.

"We are not talking about blanket consents, coerced consents or all-or-nothing policies," says Peel. "Patients want, expect, and are very capable of expressing their preferences about how their personal information is used and who can use it. Patients are becoming more savvy, not less. Don’t underestimate the strong public will to control sensitive health information," says Peel.

Dear Friend,

I'm writing to ask you to take a quick email action that could
help put a stop to a tragedy that is unfolding in West Virginia.
A coal company is blowing apart a vital place called Coal River
Mountain for mountaintop removal coal mining.

Studies have shown that the ridgelines of Coal River Mountain
have Class 7 wind potential - the best there is - and that a
wind farm on top of the mountain could generate approximately
1.2% of West Virginia's total energy needs and create hundreds
of permanent jobs in the area, while also generating long-term
tax revenue. Each explosion destroys the ridgelines and
diminishes the possibility of a clean energy future.

Please take a quick email action to help stop the blasting of
Coal River Mountain, and support the communities that live
nearby that are promoting a more sustainable development plan
with long-term jobs, energy supplies and tax revenues.

I emailed key officials in the Obama Administration to ask them
to do everything in their power to stop the destruction of Coal
River Mountain.

I hope you can take a minute to send a message to them today.

Hey Peg and Everyone,

I just sent the form letter we should all send regarding the *criminal* United States Chamber of Congress.

This is very good, and VelvetRevolution's an excellent organization, one the leaders in the movement to get rid of voting machines and insist up hand-counted paper voting.

The form at the web site Peg lists below also lets each person add his 2-cents to the letter's text.  Here's what I put in:
I ask you and media who still believe in integrity to act to inform our citizens on the dishonest leadership of the national Chamber of Commerce.  The COC doesn't advance any small business; they're in bed with the huge mega-corporations.  They are the best chamber big money buys.

At the very least, there should be an intensive investigation of the practices of the COC from January 20th, 2001 through now.  They should be statutorily defined as a lobbying organization on behalf of their big business clients, and COC should not enjoy any sort of tax-exempt status.

This is a scandal waiting for daylight.  Please act on behalf of all citizens, not only the top 1% of us.

Thank you for your consideration.
Hutch

STAND UP FOR WHAT PEOPLE WANT!
WE WANT FULL UNIVERSAL
MEDICARE FOR ALL PEOPLE!

TODAYS THE DAY TO
MAKE THE PHONE CALLS!!!

BuzzFlash
7 November 2009 DEMOCRATIC REFORM HEALTH PLAN JUST PASSED THE HOUSE! With all its flaws, which we can work hard to correct in the future, celebrate a milestone. Vote was 220-215. See http://bit.ly/48OAkF

Editors note: The bill does not provide universal health care, medicare for all. It doesnt resemble Rep. Kucinich's superior bill HR 676 almost at all. The bill passed late Saturday night is a small, tentative start, but it's a small improvement over what was. It's really kinder to the insurance companies than it is to people of the United States. Dont break out the champagne yet. Were not there. We need to concentrate and re-double the good work to strengthen the things that remain. What do we need to do?

WE NEED TO GET OUR JOB DONE!!!
WE NEED TO KEEP OUR PRESSURE ON!!!

We must keep phoning the congress members, in both the House and the Senate, to state our support for health care for all, and for HR 676. PLEASE KEEP CALLING! The more of us who phone Washington, the sooner the politicians will move in the direction of common human decency.

UPDATE: National Action For UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE House Passes Reform Bill!

Act Blue 5 November 2009 It takes courage, and we need to show them how much we appreciate them for doing so.

THESE ARE THE PROGRESSIVE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS WITH GUTS TO STAND UP to Big Insurance, Big Pharma and to the pressure from their own party bosses. They stood with the American people and ordinary working families when push came to shove and both political parties decided propping up a disastrous health care system and a corrupt Insurance Industry was more important than keeping the promise made over and over to working families. These were the men and women who promised to vote against any health care reform bill that didn't include, at the minimum, a robust public option. 60 signed a letter to Secretary Sebelius and 18 took the FDL Pledge.

Democratic members of Congress need to understand that a healthcare reform bill with a Public Option is simply not an option its a requirement. The congress members on this list have said in no uncertain terms that they will not vote for a bill without a public option all the way through Conference. That takes courage, and we need to show them how much we appreciate them for doing so. Thanks for everything else youre doing for the public option.

HEALTHCARE REFORMS A FIVE LETTER WORD: PHONE!

Healthcare for All
3 November 2009 The Kucinich Amendment must be put back in the health care bill to protect the rights of states to pursue single payer, and to protect the rights of consumers to be free of the economic death grip of the insurance companies.

On the floor of the House of Representatives, Congressman Dennis Kucinich today fought to save the right of States to secure a single payer plan.

Even though insurance companies make money not providing health care, the so-called reform bill gives so much power and money to the insurance companies that we are giving far too much for the few benefits which the bill may confer.

The insurance companies get at least another 26 million customers.

They will receive at least an extra $50 billion in new revenue.

They will be able to raise premiums 25%, even though in each of the last four consecutive years the industry has raised premiums by double digits.

As long as there are for-profit health insurance companies, there will be no effective way to protect consumers against ever escalating premiums, co pays and deductibles, unless the insurance companies know that people at a state level will always have a choice to reject the insurance companies and establish a single-payer not-for-profit system.

That is why the Kucinich Amendment must be put back in the health care bill, not just to protect the rights of states to pursue single payer, but to protect the rights of consumers to be free of the economic death grip of the insurance companies.

Progressive Democrats of America 2 November 2009 by Tim Carpenter Well do our best to make this bad bill better in the House and in the Senate. Then well take this fight to the states.

The Kucinich Amendment, which would give the states a clear path for enacting their own single-payer legislation, was stripped from the bill.

The Weiner Amendment
, which would substitute the clean, clear language of HR 676 for the behemoth of a introduced, may not be given its vote in the House in spite of Speaker Nancy Pelosis promise.

While single payer hangs in the balance, PDA will continue to fight for single payer at the state level. Meanwhile, we have a small window of opportunity to get the Kucinich Amendment back in the bill and to make sure that Speaker Pelosi follows through on her promise to allow a vote on single-payer the first ever in the House.

Democratic House leaders can insert what is called a Managers Amendment into legislation, even when it is closed to any other amendments. The managers are the majority and minority members who manage debate for the bill on each side. See Center for Policy Analysis

We need to call these managers and insist that the Kucinich Amendment is restored into the healthcare bill. We also need to urge these leaders to exert pressure on Speaker Pelosi and exert it on her ourselves to follow through on her promise to put the Weiner Amendment to a vote.

Were all frustrated by the Affordable Health Care for America Act HR 3962 the Houses lamentable healthcare reform bill, if you can call it reform at all. We think of it as tweaking a badly broken system at best its a band-aid on a hemorrhaging system although, it does appear to be drawing fewer flies than the Senate version.

Theres still time to make it better much better but not a lot of time.

We need to call the bills managers on Monday, November 2, and insist that the Kucinich Amendment be reinserted in the bill. Pelosi reneged on her deal with Weiner she can make up for it by reinserting the Kucinich amendment.

Author and journalist Russ Baker's new book, Family of Secrets, provides new
understanding of powerful forces that continue to exert unseen influence on the
course of events in the post-Bush era. It is a major deep dig into half a
century of hidden US history, a fresh explanation of how and why the Bushes came
to power and how the national security establishment behind their rise continues
to maintain a grip on the current White House administration. Gore Vidal calls
Family of Secrets, which comes out in paperback in October, "one of the most
important books of the past 10 years." Baker's work has also been praised by Dan
Rather and Bill Moyers.
Baker is an award-winning investigative reporter with a track record for making
sense of complex and little understood matters. He has written for the New
Yorker, Vanity Fair, the Nation, the New York Times and the Washington Post.
Baker received a 2005 Deadline Club award for his exclusive reporting on George
W. Bush's military record. He is the founder of WhoWhatWhy/the Real News
Project, a non-partisan, nonprofit investigative news organization, operating at
