Greens May Get Another Gold Star from Bush

Everyone who can do so, should go to New Jersey, and work to make sure
that the Greens do not get away with divide and conquer garbage again!
The US Senate is at stake in this NJ Gubenatorial campaign. We need to
make sure that the Democratic Gubenatorial Candidate is elected. The
next Governor of New Jersey will pick Torricelli's replacement if
Torricelli is forced out of office. If the Green candidate gets away
with this the Republican candidate will Win and will pick a
Republican to replace Torricelli in the US Senate. There is a Green
Party Candidate for Governor of New Jersey We need to stop that
candidacy from dividing the Left by educating the citizens of New
Jersey about these divide and conquer tactics. Jim McGreevey,

"Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler has posed a strong challenge by
refusing to bow out of the race for the reason of avoiding an
intra-party primary skirmish. Schundler is reported to have a strong
relationship with the local community and Arab American Republicans

Governor By DAVID M. HALBFINGER Source: The New York Times
New Jersey Right to Life, the state's largest anti-abortion group,

Schundler, who opposes abortion, has not stressed the issue in his
radio or TV ads, for fear of alienating moderate voters. But he sent
more-conservative voters a letter from Republican values guru Bill
Bennett that underscored his anti-abortion credentials. "Unlike his
opponent, Bret is unequivocally pro-life," Bennett wrote.- Schundler,
repeatedly refers to his opponent as "Liberal Bob Franks" and states
that Franks "opposes President Bush's tax cut plan. John Hassell

"Enter Bret Schundler. While you may not have heard his name before,
it is more than likely that you will hear it repeated many times over
in the months to come. For the past couple of years, conservative and
Republican activists have been doing cartwheels over this political
novice. William F. Buckley and Jeffrey Hart have touted him as likely
future presidential candidate. George Will and Grover Norquist have
also taken notice of this man's accomplishments and record. The New
York Times has spent a great deal of ink covering Schundler. And
Republican leaders have been hosting and feting him all over the
country. Not a bad bit of national attention for the mayor of Jersey
City. Jersey City? Yep Jersey City.
Hardly a hotbed of conservatism, Jersey City is a working class,
Catholic city that is two-thirds minority. Which is why the 1993
election of Schundler - who is a pro-life, Harvard-educated investment
banker, and a WASP to boot - flabbergasted the professional political
handicappers. He was the first Republican to be elected as Mayor of
Jersey City since World War I. And he not only won, but he won big.
Running for his first full term, he managed to get 68 per cent of the
vote. He was later re-elected by a similar margin. Oh, and did I
mention that he ran as a conservative? More and more families are
moving to Jersey City instead of out of it. A devout Christian,
Schundler fought for the rights of all of Jersey City's religious
citizens,
standing up to left-wing activists who objected to the public display
of religious symbols. He took them to court and won. And now he wants
to do for the state of New Jersey what he has done on the local
level."

"Schundler, the mayor of Jersey City, emphasized his opposition to gun
control and his support for abortion restrictions as he sought to cast
himself as the true social conservative-a strategy he hopes will to
appeal to hard-line conservatives in the June 26 primary."

" Schundler Sunday, April 29, 2001
By ROBERT RATISH
Staff Writer
PARSIPPANY-Assembled on the front lawn of a church Saturday afternoon,
gun control advocates staged a vigil and declared their opposition to
Republican gubernatorial candidate Bret Schundler.
The National Rifle Association has endorsed Schundler for governor,
staging meetings in Atlantic City and Princeton to rally support for
him.
About 30 gun control proponents attended the vigil, organized by
Ceasefire New Jersey, a Cherry Hill-based group that supports gun
control, and the Million Mom March.
Bryan Miller of Ceasefire New Jersey said the organization hopes to
bring attention to Schundler's position on guns and his endorsement by
the NRA.
"Bret Schundler supports gun owner's rights. He speaks the NRA's
language very clearly," Miller said, adding that he believes the NRA's
backing will ultimately hurt the candidate's campaign. "The NRA is not
popular in New Jersey," he said.
The NRA has been focusing on New Jersey, which is one of two states
electing a governor this year.
But Schundler's spokesman, Bill Guhl, said the endorsement would not
hurt the campaign of the Jersey City mayor.
"The NRA has endorsed Bret because they understand that he is
committed to Second Amendment rights," he said.
The vigil at the United Methodist Church was scheduled in response to
reports that the NRA planned a meeting at a hotel in Parsippany on
Saturday. It was unclear why the meeting did not take place.
NRA member Stephen Potts of Franklin was among those who did show up
expecting to attend the meeting. Potts owns an AR-15 rifle that he
uses for target shooting, and he said the state's strict gun laws
punish legal gun owners and do nothing to stop gun violence.
He plans to vote for Schundler over Bob Franks in the Republican
primary. "Franks is not saying he's anti-gun, but he's not pro-gun,
and the Democratic Party is anti-gun. Schundler has come right out and
told us he's not going to restrict our rights," he said.
Joyce Sooy of Emerson was among those taking part in the anti-gun
gathering. She said gun control has been an important issue to her
ever since her adult son, Eric, killed himself with his
brother-in-law's gun while suffering from depression 10 years ago.
She said gun control is an important step toward preventing suicide.
"If they didn't have access to a gun, would they stab themselves with
a knife, or overdose on pills? It's hard to say," she said, but she
added that when guns are readily available it increases the danger.
Ceasefire also used the vigil to voice its support of the childproof
handguns bill, which has passed in the state Senate. The bill would
prohibit any handguns other than personalized ones once the technology
becomes available. Personalized guns fire only when held by the owner.
Schundler opposes the bill, Guhl said."

"Schundler is the only major party candidate in the state who opposes
abortion rights, and he counts national Christian evangelist Pat
Robertson as a supporter and friend. "Robertson believes that people
of faith shouldn't be ashamed of it, and they should be willing to
act on their faith," says Schundler. Schundler says parents should be
told when their children seek birth control .These views place
Schundler, the 41-year-old mayor of Jersey City, outsideNew Jersey's
political mainstream. "In the early part of his public career, he was
a liberal Democrat. In time, just like Ronald Reagan, he became a
conservative Republican," says John Tomicki, executive director of
the League of American Families. Schundler made friends in the
anti-abortion movement by attending rallies against an
abortion clinic in Montclair, Tomicki says. Karen Joseph, spokeswoman
for the NJEA, says her union believes Schundler is "the antithesis
of everything we hold sacred about public education." Giving
poor children money to leave public schools will make unspeakable
ghettos of the schools for children who do not benefit from
Schundler's programs, she says. "People should know that
Bret Schundler will do everything in his power to destroy the public
schools of New Jersey," Joseph says. "He will do everything in his
power to shift funds away from the public schools, thereby making it
more difficult to teach the children." But Schundler says he is proud
to have the "left-wing members" of the teachers union as enemies. "I
hope they spend a lot of money. I want every single person to know
they're against me," he says."

"the NRA has targeted him for defeat in the Republican Primary for
Governor
this June. Toward that end, they are holding three meetings around New
Jersey to mobilize support for his opponent, Brent Schundler, who is a
strong opponent of gun violence prevention legislation.
The first of the NRA meetings is slated for Saturday from 9-12 at the
Princeton Marriott on Route 1.To counter the efforts of the NRA to
influence the election in opposition to gun violence prevention,
three groups are co-sponsoring Saturday's Vigil: Ceasefire NJ, the
Coalition for Peace Action, and the NJ Chapter of the Million Mom
March. Vigil against Gun Violence 12 noon - 1 pm, Saturday, April 21
Palmer Square, Princeton, NJ
timed to counter NRA advocacy At the vigil, there will be posters,
banners, and leafleting
urging the public to inform themselves about candidate positions on
gun violence prevention in deciding how to vote.
The public is invited to attend the Vigil. For further information,
contact the Coalition for Peace Action at (609)924-5022, web site
www.peacecoalition.org; or Ceasefire NJ at (856)489-5960, web site
http://www.ceasefirenj.org "The NRA had a stranglehold in preventing
sensible gun violence prevention bills for many years. In 1993, we
broke that stranglehold in successfully defending New Jersey's Assault
Weapons Ban, the first in the nation, against an NRA effort at
rescission. In 1994, the National Assault Weapons Ban became law. Now
we have the opportunity to do the same thing by becoming the first
state to pass the Childproof Handgun Bill. If we can legislate
childproofing aspirin bottles, we certainly should do so for the most
dangerous consumer product of all. We must
not let the NRA special interest stranglehold become re-established,"
said the Rev. Robert Moore, executive director of the Coalition for
Peace Action."

"Decision announced May 24 by Vermont Republican Senator James
Jeffords to leave GOP to become independent, thus throwing control of
US Senate to Democrats, now focusing more attention on future of NJ
Senator Robert Torricelli. Possible resignation of Senator Torricelli
could again give GOP Senate control if Torricelli replaced by
Republican. Torricelli continues adamantly to deny any wrongdoing,
but series of stories in New York Times on current federal
investigation indicate prosecutors now targeting Torricelli himself
for role in accepting gifts from former campaign contributor David
Chang. On May 27, New York Post also reported that federal sources
believe sufficient evidence now exists for Senator's indictment, which
might come before end of summer in order to beat five-year statute of
limitations deadline on charges that Torricelli took an $8,100 Rolex
watch from businessman David Chang in November 1996 and money for a
Mercedes in August 1996. If indictment is forthcoming, Senator would
face uphill re-election campaign next year, particularly in light of
recent polls showing slipping popularity and potential Republican
candidates like former Governor Tom Kean beating him handily in
potential matchup. Torricelli's fundraising also may be hampered
since he's already been forced to raise more than a million dollars
from supporters for legal fees while he's also starting fundraising
for next year's campaign, and some of his past blue-chip money sources
are grumbling over subpoenas and FBI interviews they've faced during
federal probe. Some lawyers feel Torricelli might benefit in using
political leverage to work out early deal to resign, allowing Acting
Governor Donald T. DiFrancesco to name successor, swinging Senate
control back to Republicans. Others feel, however, that Torricelli
more likely to fight potential charges through possible trial, at
least until next year when Democrat Jim McGreevey, if elected governor
in November, could control selection of successor. Acting Governor and
Senate President Donald T. DiFrancesco's April 25 withdrawal from
gubernatorial race, but decision not to resign also as Acting
Governor, puzzling to some DiFrancesco confidantes. DiFrancesco's wish
to remain as Acting Governor may not stop even more damaging stories
about personal life, alluded to by Republican Senator Ciesla in citing
"rumors" of "Clintonesque behavior".Some feel DiFrancesco should have
attempted to foreclose further reports by resigning not only as Acting
Governor, but also from Senate. Others targeting National Rifle
Association as possible source of damaging stories on DiFrancesco
personal finances that led to his exit from gubernatorial race.Theory
is that NRA held grudge from DiFrancesco's support of assault weapons
bill pushed through by Governor Jim Florio, and that it conducted
negative research leaked to media."

Green Party gubenatorial candidate could split the Left electing Bret
Schundler as Governor:" But now Mayor Brett Schundler and the Liberty
State Park Development Corporation want to hack out a section of the
border of our park and hand it over to private developers. The
taxpayers of Jersey City would bear the burden of additional traffic
and pollution for a proposed waterpark that local residents would not
be able to afford. We would lose open space and a natural reserve in
our urban area, a place to take our children and let them experience

Lower Expectations Than Usual Edition Bret Schundler -
Unless you live in New Jersey, you may have never heard of Bret
Schundler. Mr. Schundler is the mayor of Jersey City, and also the
founder of the New Jersey Scholarship Fund, a program which helps
needy families send children to private or parochial schools. -it was
revealed last week that Schundler spent $800,000 from the Scholarship
Fund last December on TV ads that gave him wide exposure -
coincidentally just one month before announcing his candidacy for
governor of New Jersey. Strange then that Schundler spent a slightly
less impressive $150,000 on actual scholarships throughout all of last
year. So, scholarship fund for underprivileged children, or private
slush fund for a rotten politician? You be the judge."

"Schundler under scrutiny for TV ads Before he started running for
governor, his scholarship fund spent $150,000 on students - and
$800,000 on commercials. By Tom Turcol INQUIRER STAFF WRITER In the
weeks before announcing his candidacy for governor in New Jersey, Bret
Schundler took the nonprofit scholarship fund he runs in a radically
new and uncharted direction. While similar funds across the country
were diverting almost every dime to scholarships, Schundler spent
$800,000 from his New Jersey Scholarship Fund on television
commercials that gained him wide exposure to voters as the election
season was getting under way.The ads featured Schundler, the
Republican mayor of Jersey City, promoting new tax incentives for
private-school scholarships. Meanwhile, he spent $150,000
last year to help provide actual scholarships, according to figures
provided by Schundler."

"Schundler Spends Students' Money on TV Ads The Philadelphia Inquirer
reported that NJ GOP Gubernatorial candidate Brett Schundler may have
used money from a non-profit fund for disadvantaged students to raise
his profile for his campaign. Weeks before he announced his candidacy.
Schundler took $800,000 from his New Jersey Scholarship fund and began
a statewide television ad campaign featuring himself. In the six years
that he has run the fund, Schundler has never before run a single
television ad, let alone funded a statewide campaign. And similar
foundations do not run television ads and spend all of their funding
on the students (Philadelphia Inquirer, 3/29/01)."
