Mga Abyan kag Paryentes:
             First up, congratulations to Maria Lourdes Enano Lipyanek of
Kearney, New Jersey for the being the first one to submit her entry for
our IGBARAS FAMILY ALBUM  project. We have just a few more days before
the deadline so whip out the pen and start writing your essay and start
preparing your family photo. Lourdes not only bought two pages but also
paid for another two pages for an Igbarasnon family. We applaud Mrs.
Liyanek for her dedication and I hope that the rest of you, our dearest
kasimanwas will follow suit.
             My sister forwarded the following link from E-bay to me.
Please check it out and maybe someone out there who has some knowledge on
the history of Igbaras can shed light on what this person is talking
about. It seems like this item is an Igbarasnon heirloom (scroll down to

The following is part of the e-mail that was sent by Mr. Larry Escaba of
the Toronto Igbarasnons:
Greetings from Toronto.  I know you have been busy these few days. Keep
the good work.  Anyway, I would like to inform you that our $200.00 US
contribution is all set to be delivered to you. Our Igbarasnon X-Mas
Party was celebrated last Saturday and it was a success. We had fun and
as usual dancing all night, gifts, great foods and foods. It was a big
crowd about 200 people.  The 200.00 is the donation you mention for every
Igbarasnon Group for the Balik Igbaras 03 Celebration.
We now have four groups who are committed to the Miss Millennium Igbaras
namely the Toronto Igbarasnons, Vancouver area Igbarasnons, Texas and
Alabama Igbarasnons and the West Coast Igbarasnons. We are still waiting
for the response of our kasimanwas from the East Coast and the Florida
area.
Melanie Saluria, a young Igbarasnon teacher from Northern California will
be spending Christmas in Igbaras. She will be our envoy to the mayor and
our new parish priest and she assures us of the eagerly awaited fresh
news from our Dutang Pinalangga.
I have also received more contributions for our Igbarasnon Family Album
including that of Gemma Esmalla of Chicago. We have just a bit more than
a week to go, so please start working on your “journal diaries” and
choose the family picture you wish to use. If you wish to receive a hard
copy of the reservation form, please e-mail me or you can always call me

Krismas Parti kang Igbarasnon 2002
Northridge, California
8th of December 2002

Children were the center of attraction during this most memorable
celebration of the Igbarasnons in the West Coast, USA. Starting at 12
noon, Igbarasnons from all over Southern California started coming. I
first met Paul Gonzalez, a die-hard Igbarasnon (I mean that as a
compliment) with his well enunciated karay-a. My niece, Bing-bing Hingco
who is fresh from Igbaras even commented, “where is he from, his karay-a
is better than mine.” Cora Estabalaya and Mr. and Mrs. Rose Grimm came
followed by other Igbarasnons. Soon the home of Ed and Inday Lou
(Ezpeleta) Sevilla were filled with the aroma of the Igbarasnon. And what
might that be, you maybe ask? Well, I dunno, I just felt like saying it,
Anyways, I can’t remember everyone who came but Corazon Estabalaya, the
most able secretary of the Igbaras Association promised to e-mail me all
the names of those who came and I will share it then with you all.
             Two guests from Northern California graced us with their
presence, Mr. Roming Enhaynes and his daughter and Nena (Gepuela) Sese
also showed up. By the way, Mr. Enhaynes donated some CD’s and children’s
books for Igbaras. (Mayor James if you are reading this e-mail, your Tito
Roming said hi!) Everyone did have a good time, with their laughter,
talks (also known as tsismis, he he) and picture taking. I am sure that
when you visit www.igbaras.com in a few days you will see some of the
photos of the most photogenic Igbarasnons in town. We had late lunch
starting at 1:00 pm, which continued like forever. There was a lot of
delicious food and desserts as well. The beautiful home of the Sevillas
complete with a swimming pool gave us a great ambiance for this
gathering. Special thanks to Inday Lu and Ed for opening their home to
us.
             After lunch we started our meeting regarding our activities
for Balik-Igbaras 2003 and we have some surprises in store for the
tumandok Igbarasnon. If you are not from Southern California, let me tell
you that our most helpful kasiwamwas in this part of the world are
working so very hard in anticipation of our celebration come May 2003.
After an abbreviated meeting, the Igbarasnon children started playing
games, which amused most for the adults. It is most appropriate that the
children had a good ‘ol time because Christmas after all is first and
foremost for the kids. Thanks to Jenivee Elloran who coordinated the
games. They danced; smiled, open presents and well, they were children,
our Igbarasnon children. If I can remember all of them, there were the
Ezpeleta kids (from Joker and Toto Vincent), Elloran children, Esteba
children, Esmeralda kids (I am sure I have forgotten some of them) and
Sean!
             Then we had our “Exchange Gift.” Every family brought a gift
and every family took one home as well. We also had our now famous 50-50
raffle. What we did is sell raffle tickets to everyone. Half of the
proceeds went to the association and the other half to the lucky winner.
Thanks to Shiela Esmeralda for so always so giving of her time to make
this part of our gathering happen. We gathered $100, not bad for half a
day.
             What else did I fail mention here? What would an Igbarasnon
gathering without the mahjong? I believe we had four tables set up next
to the swimming pool (sosyal naman!). After more games with the kids,
more laughter and camaraderie from the older Igbarasnons (there was even
a “viuda” and senior citizen section), it was time for my family and I to
leave. We bid goodbye to our kasimanwa who I am sure they will continue
the “sinadya” and the mahjong sessions until they get tired or pass out
in the case of those who are drinking. Before I forget, I heard an
Igbarasnon first during this gathering. Kasimanwas who were smoking were
advised to quit and one who was smoking while playing mahjong was asked
to stop (the Igbarasnon way of course). Then I heard it, “Igbarasnons do
not smoke.” I guess a lot of us can all learn from that!
             During our meeting, we have decided that the Igbaras
Association of America will again convene before our BIG celebration on
May 2003 in Igbaras. It will be held either the end of March or early
April at either the Nacilla/Ezpeleta  home in Los Angeles or the
Confessor/Cordova home also in Northridge. I am so proud of our
kasimanwas. They try their very best to be present in all our gatherings.
They are always there when you call on them and are always there to lend
a helping hand. We are seeing a new generation and brand of Igbarasnons
my friends.
             …and a little child will lead them. And they sure did during
the Christmas Gathering of the Igbarasnons in Southern California!

             We would like to welcome our fellow Igbarasnons to our
“Balita Halin sa Igbaras,” in particular Benjamin and Lourdes Emmanuel of
Rodeo, California.
More submissions to our “Igbarasnon Family Album” are coming especially
from the Canadian Igbarasnons. Just a reminder especially to those who
are new to our e-mail service, this project is similar to the annual
souvenir program in Igbaras but there will be no advertisement or
messages from politicians. We need two things from you. First is a photo
of your family and an essay about your journey from Igbaras to where you
are right now. An article or an essay of not more than 500 words – maybe
on when and how you left Igbaras, describing your feelings and the
scenery around as you started your journey. You can also discuss how you
settled down and raised a family inject some humor on it to make it more
interesting. We ask a donation of $25 per page. If you wish to receive a

The following is a reprint of the history of Igbaras:
As early as 1615, Igbaras was already a visita of the Agustinian
missionaries. Rev. Fr. Juan de Medina founded the first Iglesita
somewhere in the vicinity of Binanua-an, which later became the first
town site. Because floods inundated the site, it was moved to Utas, a
high rise outside the Kiput area. The new town site was a flourishing
settlement even before the coming of the Spaniards This was evidenced by
the abundant antiques that were later uncovered with impressions of Ming
and Sung Dynasties from 960 AD. The town was again transferred later to
Cabubugan.
In 1752, Fr. Juan Aguado founded the town site, Igbaras, named after the
word baras (trans., sand). Don Diego Tamooc was formally selected to head
the pueblo in 1761.
During the American Regime, lawlessness and banditry were rampant. So
Don Joveniano Ealdama built a talutog (a fortress of bamboo and woods)
around the poblacion. "Montor" the famous bandit penetrated the talutog
and killed the Gobernadorcillo Don Mariano Benedicto and then looted the
poblacion. It was also during this period that the Spanish-American War
started. "Directorcillo" Julian Bucoy, Sr. joined the revolutionary
against the Spaniards and later against the American as Primer Teniente
de Esrado Mayor under General Martin Delgado with headquarters in Santa
Barbara, Iloilo.
In 1902, Igbaras was fused with Guimbal as the latter's arrabal. It was
not until Gobernador General Charles E. Yeater issued Executive Order 64
on 1918 that mandated the separation of Igbaras from Guimbal. This was
acted on in January 1 of 1919. Don Flor Evidente was the first elected
municipal president.
During WWII, Lt. Pedro B. Saavedra organized the guerilla forces under
General Macario Peralta; and the poblacion was burned to ashes by the
resistance against the Japanese Imperial Army. Luis Ezpeleta, with the
consent of the USAFFE Guerilla Movement, became the mayor of the town.
Among the famous people from this municipality are Don Eugenio Ealdama,
the first congressman elected to Congress in 1925-1928 and Don Mariano
Ezpeleta the 1935 delegate to the  Constitutional Convention who also
later served as Consul-General and ambassadors to several countries.

An airplane' s about to crash; there are 5 passengers but only 4
parachutes

*The 1st passenger said: "I am Tiger Woods, world's leading golfer. I can
still contribute to the game and I feel I should live." He grabs the
first parachute and jumps off.

The 2nd passenger, Oprah, declares: "I can still give pleasure to
millions of TV viewers and am not ready to die." She takes the second
parachute and leaves the plane.

The 3rd passenger announces: "I am Ronnie Poe Jr, the Action King of
Filipino movies. I will be the next president of The Philippines and I
must
survive." He takes a nearby pack and jumps out.

The 4th passenger is the Pope. He tells the the 5th passenger, a young
Filipino boy aged 12: "I am old and sickly, I have had a full life and am
willing to sacrifice. Go and get the last parachute so that you may
live."

The boy answers: "Do not worry Holy Father, there' s a parachute
left for you. Da Action King took my school backpack!"

As promised yesterday, here is the complete list of the mayors of Igbaras
and other pertinent information regarding our dearest town:
Don Flor Evidente was elected first Municipal President in 1919-1922,
followed by Lucas Gentica, 1922-1925; Julian Bucoy Saavedra, 1925-1931;
Justo Estrella, 1931-1938; Dionisio Esquilla 1938, but lost to Gerardo
Escaba (1938-41) in an electoral protest; Toribio Melliza, 1941-45;
Perfecto Saavedra, 1945-1955; Ricardo Ealdama, 1955-61; Toribio Melliza
1961-64; Atty. Daniel Esmeralda, 1964-1977; Vicente E. Perez, 1977-1985;
Wilfredo C. Uy (taken by Our Lord - February 23, 1999), 1986-1992; Fruto
J. Saavedra (1992-2001). The current mayor is Jaime Esmeralda, M.D.
The latest NSO Census of Population and Housing (1990) showed that
Igbaras population was 25,274. The average annual population growth rate
of the municipality between 1980-1990 was 0.67%. Out of 46 barangays in
the municipality, Barangay Bugnay is the least populated with only 1
person per hectare.
The 1994 population in the municipality based on the SocioEconomic
profile (SEP) survey is 27,233 with 4,866 households.
Igbaras has a total land area of 15,245 hectares. As classified by the of
lands, 8,774.096 hectares are alienable and disposal lands distributed to
forty six (46) barangays and 6,470.904 hectares are timberland. The
largest of these barangays is Barangay buga with an area of 595.9300
hectares, while the smallest is Barangay Bugnay with an area of 58.0700
hectares excluding the barangays in the poblacion. Six barangays are
located in the poblacion with an average of 203.7037 hectares.

A Christmas vocabulary – I
By Jose A. Carillo

One tradition that the predominantly Roman Catholic Philippines
celebrates with such religious piety and commercial extremism is
Christmas. The urge and expectation to celebrate it starts as early as
September, when the affix –bre (which many Filipinos associate with the
onset of the cold season) starts to show up in the country’s
Spanish-denominated months: septiembre, octubre, noviembre, and
diciembre. By some twist of logic that is not even related to the
changing of the seasons, the Filipino takes this as a clarion call to
start playing Christmas songs on radio, buying Christmas decor or
sprucing up old ones, stocking up on Christmas cards, and making
Christmas gift lists. Thus, even before the moveable feast of Advent
(December 1 this year), Filipino families all over the 7,100 islands will
have whipped themselves into such a frenzy for a feast that runs its
dizzying course beyond Christmas Day, past New Year’s Day, all the way to
another moveable feast, the Epiphany (January 5 in 2003) or Three King’s.
By that time, the Filipino shall have celebrated no less than 120 days of
Christmas, no doubt the longest celebration of its kind anywhere in the
world.

Sociologists, psychologists, and historians no doubt will have an
explanation for why Filipinos go to such extended paroxysms of feasting.
My interest in pointing it out, however, is simply to explore how
Christmas has taken such deep root in the Filipino psyche that its
original significance has all but disappeared. Not many Filipinos today,
for instance, probably realize that the word “Christmas” came from the
Old English cristes maesse, or “Christ’s mass,” the Roman Catholic
celebration of the Eucharist, which is the sacrament of Jesus Christ’s
Last Supper with His Disciples. The Old English name “Christ” itself is
familiar to all Filipinos, of course, but how many know that it came from
the Latin Christus, a word that sprang directly from the Greek Kristós,
which literally means “anointed one”? This Greek term in turn was a
direct translation of the Hebrew term mashiah, which became the root of
the modern English term “messiah,” or “deliverer.” I am afraid that few
Filipinos get to know these, since they have come to look at Christmas
simply as a time for merrymaking and for receiving and giving gifts.

We must remember, though, that Christmas originally came to the
Philippines not through the English language but the Spanish. It reached
our shores as Feliz Navidad or “Happy Nativity” when Ferdinand Magellan,
accompanied not only by soldiers but by Roman Catholic priests as well,
stumbled on the islands in 1521. The term Navidad for Christmas thus got
imprinted into the Filipino consciousness during the almost 400 years of
Spanish-style Christianization that followed, and until the 1950s was
still the vogue in many Philippine towns. Few Filipinos, however,
probably have the notion that Navidad has the same etymological ancestry
as the English “Nativity,” both having come from the Latin verb nasci,
which means “to be born.” The verb nasci itself descended from the
Indo-European base gen- or gn-, meaning “to produce,” from which the
modern English words “genes,” “genetics,” and “Genesis” were also
derived. The concept of “birth” is deeply embedded in Christmas in
whatever language it takes form.

We all know that when they Christianized the Philippines, the Spaniards
inculcated in the Filipinos the Hispanic trappings of Christmas,
including the Star-of-Bethlehem lantern or parol. When the Americans
threw out the Spaniards from the country in 1898, however, Christmas came
to the Philippines again, this time in the European version complete with
such symbols as Christmas trees, snow, mistletoe, and holly. The
Americans may have been unable to supplant the country’s Roman Catholic
moorings of Christmas with that of the American Protestant view, but in
50 years they succeeded very well in implanting the American Christmas
vocabulary and trappings in the Filipino psyche. Today’s Philippine
Christmas is, in fact, is a merry, gaudy, and thoroughly heady mix of
Spanish-style religiosity heavily laced with American culture, with the
English vocabulary and European icons for Christmas predominating.

One Western Christmas custom for which the Filipinos took a special fancy
is the decor-laden Christmas tree. This custom, however, is not
indigenously English or American in character. It is of German origin and
dates back to 1604, or almost 1,400 years after the birth of Christ. Not
until 200 years later did it become a custom in European countries, and
the ones who brought it to the United States were not even the British
colonists and early immigrants. The ones who did were the Hessians, the
German-speaking soldiers hired by the British to fight the secessionists
during the American Revolution. Nostalgic for the long cold Decembers in
Germany, the Hessians put up Christmas trees in their new homes in the
American colony across the Atlantic Ocean, while the original
colonists—mostly Puritans—forbade the celebration of Christmas as a
holiday. In fact, a Massachusetts law enacted a law in 1659 forbade
anyone to celebrate Christmas, punishing violators with heavy fines and
penalties.

Dearest Kasimanwa:

             Happy Advent! Today is what we call in the Catholic Church,
“Gaudete Sunday,” a time of rejoicing because the birth of the Lord is
near!
             Today also marks the deadline for the submission of the
entries for our IGBARASNON FAMILY ALBUM but most has not sent in their
forms yet. I know how busy you must be with the Christmas rush and all so
I will wait until a majority of our kasimanwas have sent in their forms
before working on our project. If Bingbing Michelle of New York who
usually is punctual but have not sent in her form yet, well that means,
everyone else is so preoccupied with things (just kidding Michelle). If
you have time this coming weekend or maybe during your days off for
Christmas, please do attend to your essays and photos and mail them to
me, as soon as possible.
             Mr. Ambrosio Gotera whom I give a lot of credit for this
project has already turned in his family essays and the write-up for our
Family Album. Fr. Tim Melliza of Venezuela has also sent in his preface
for the project. We are still awaiting the entry of Mayor James Esmeralda
from Igbaras.
             Just to let you know, I have written some of the world
leaders for a message (which we wont use because this is not a souvenir
program) and most have responded including President George W. Bush of
the USA and Prime Minister Tony Blair of Great Britain.
             I hope that everyone will have a nice week. I know that
gift-giving is very important especially to the Igbarasnon family but to
put everything into perspective, Joseph and Mary on the day of our Lord’s
birth, didn’t have gifts, well not even a inn to stay. Jesus is the
reason for this season and without Him our holidays will be empty.
            The following is part two of the Philippine Christmas
vocabulary. Hope you learn something new from it.

A Christmas vocabulary – II

  The Christmas tree, the centerpiece of the Christmas celebration in many
Filipino homes, is actually not a religious but a pagan icon. It started
as a symbol of hope for the peoples of ancient northern Europe. During
the winter solstice, when nights were longest and most of the land would
be covered with snow, the early Europeans brought live evergreen trees
into their homes to remind themselves that their crops would grow again.
The Druids or priests of ancient Gaul and Britain set candles on huge
trees and worshipped them in elaborate religious rites. The Norsemen
farther north, on the other hand, kept a log burning all day and night
during the darkest days of the winter solstice. They called this log the
Hweolor-tid or “Yule log,” from which came the word Yuletide, meaning the
“wheel” or “turning time” of the sun, which non-Christians in the Western
hemisphere still use to refer to the Christmas season. Many centuries
later, Filipinos happily embraced this practice of putting up Christmas
trees and, true to the Hispanic tradition, started embellishing them with
the star of Bethlehem at the top and a replica of the Nativity at the
base. Probably not knowing its brutal climatic implications, they also
welcomed “Yuletide Greetings!” as an alternative way of saying “Merry
Christmas!” or “Maligayang Pasko!”

Another European tradition that became a Philippine Christmas mainstay
(but in artificial form) is decking homes with mistletoe, the evergreen
plant that bears waxy white berries, and holly, another evergreen that
bears red ones. The Druids considered these two plants sacred, and
believed that the holly possessed magical properties. At any rate, these
plants later found their way as decor of the Saturnalia, a major festival
of the Romans honoring their god Saturn. From mid-December all the way to
January 1st, the Romans would deck their halls with laurel wreaths and
evergreens lit with candles, feast on hearty meals, hold masquerades in
the streets, visit friends, and exchange Strenae, or gifts in the form of
fruits believed to bring good luck. The early Christians, just beginning
to make their presence felt in Rome, were alarmed by these pagan
practices. They wanted to keep Christmas solemn and religious, not
cheerful and merry like the Saturnalia. When forbidding the pagan
practices did not work, however, they later decided to let their
Christian holiday rituals absorb them instead.

As it turned out, Christianity eventually prevailed in the Roman Empire
and in 325 AD, Constantine the Great, the first Christian Roman emperor,
decreed Dec. 25 as a new holiday to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
He chose for Christmas Day the traditional birthday of Nimrod, the
great-grandson of Noah, which also fell on the winter solstice. By
allowing the fighting Christians and the pagans in his realm to celebrate
their respective holidays on the same day, he hoped to keep the peace
between them. Twenty-five years later, in 350 AD, Pope Julius I
officially recognized Dec. 25 as the date of Christ’s birth.

One other practice of the Roman Saturnalia that became an enduring part
of the Filipino Christmas is caroling. Towards the end of their winter
holiday, the Romans celebrated the Kalends (first day of the month) of
January, which to them represented the triumph of life over death. They
called the season that began with the Saturnalia and ended with Kalends
the Dies Natalis Invicti Solis, or the “Birthday of the Unconquered Sun.”
All throughout this season, costumed singers and dancers called Mummers
serenaded and entertained their neighbors. From this evolved the
Christmas tradition of caroling that, like the parol or Christmas lantern
(from farol de Navidad in Spanish) that was introduced here by the
Spaniards, is very much alive in the Philippines today.

Even with the end of Spanish rule over a century ago, and despite the
inroads of many American practices, the Filipino Christmas remains
Hispanic at its core. Its religious rites center on the belén (Spanish
for “Bethlehem,” where Christ was born), with its nacimiento or Nativity
scene, showing the newborn Jesus in a manger attended by his Virgin
Mother Mary, his father Joseph, some shepherds, and often the Three Kings
or Magi. This tradition reflects the strongly Marian character not only
of the Filipino Christmas but also of the Roman Catholic Church in the
Philippines, which counts over 63,000,000 or 83 percent of the population
for its faithful. Indeed, given its people’s history and psychographics,
a more fertile place for Christmas to take root would be hard to find.

Christmas in the Philippines, of course, culminates in the traditional
Noche Buena (Spanish for “Christmas Eve”), during which church bells are
rang to invite the faithful to the Misa de Gallo (Spanish for “Mass of
the Rooster”). Still, the celebration goes on without letup through the
intense merrymaking of New Year’s Day until the Feast of the Three Kings,
so strong is the Filipino’s predisposition to extracting merriment from a
season that has obviously found a very special place in his heart.

Food for thought. Meeting like-minded Kasimanwas.

As a child we were once taught in history classrooms about
the "Barter of Panay" and how then, the Bornean datus formed
themselves a sort of successful federation before the Spanish
colonizers changed that political grouping into a highly centralized
government with Manila as its seat of administration. For nearly 300
years we accepted this form of political structure unquestionably
and when the next colonizer came they (the Americans) re-inforced
the same old structure of highly centralized government. From then
onward governments come and go but the economic growth of the
country became more stagnated more particularly in the Visayas and
Mindanao,while Manila and its immediate surrounding getting the most
of the nations wealth and resources. This to me is not a fair
political system whereby everything is decided upon by who ever is
in control of the Capital.

To remedy this gross unfairness that had been dictated to us for
centuries by the Tagalog people of Luzon, I firmly believe that in
the Millineum we, as Visayan, must initiate a struggle for political
reform and campaign vigorously for a Constitutional Change inorder
to pave the way for an efficient structure - from presidential to
federal parliamentary democracy - and using the working modules of
advance western democracies of the world (other than the U.S.)

In short simple language I strongly favor a united federation of all
the provinces in the national level but more importantly that these
provinces maintain their own system of federal
governments,parliaments, courts, administrations (meaning to say to
manage thier own affairs.)With our burgeoning population of nearly
80 million we must work for political change. I would like to
solicite ideas, similar to mine, towards a Federal Republic with the
Visayan's and the people of Mindanao having there own parliaments
and court of justice and administrations. I welcome constructive

In the year 2002, we saw some of our loved ones leave this valley of
tears. As we bid goodbye to a long time pastor, Fr. Jess Candado,
Igbarasnons welcome with open arms our new and young parish priest,
Father Francis Nicolasora. It was also in the year 2002 that Igbaras dot
com came to life and united Igbarasnons all over the world. We started to
make our plans for our Balik-Igbaras 2003. My friends, a new year is
dawning! We have in Igbaras a set of municipal officials who are working
hard to make our “Dutang Pinalangga” a better place to live. Here in the
USA and Canada, our Balikbayan associations are working hard to unite all
of us who now live outside of Igbaras. We welcome the year 2003 with
confidence and excitement as we look forward in meeting once again in
that quaint town south of Iloilo we all call home.
      With all of these and our family blessings, let us be grateful to
the Lord Almighty.
             May Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin Mary, patroness of the
Philippines shower us with her graces, through the intercession of our

REFLECTIONS  ON  NEW  YEAR 2003

The world in 2003 as viewed by the editor of a 160-year-old conservative
magazine in London will become safer and more prosperous with exciting
developments for humanity. The year's headlines will be dominated by war,
the Middle East and recession but behind them will be a world that is
improving. Terrorism will still be around but the condemnation of it in
almost all countries, rich and poor, Muslim and Christian, will show that
the extremists, with nothing to offer but destruction, will fail and will
not carry change to the wider world. In Asia, the growth rate will be
considerably faster.The most exciting developments for humanity in 2003
will be in molecular biomedicine. The ability to change humankind's
molecular cell structure to alter who we are, will raise the knottiest
questions.  2003 will be the year  many predicted would never come.

In the Philippines, the yearend turning point decision of the President
to step down in 2004 augurs well for focused action on specific reforms
in the economy in 2003, devoid of political patronage and suspicious
tradeoffs. Civil society will respond positively and private business
will warm up to explore new ways to rise or expand.

For a parishioner of Alabang like me, a significant development in 2003
will be the setting in motion of the spinoff of Parañaque, Las Piñas and
Muntinlupa as a new Diocese autonomous from the Archdiocese of Manila. As
St. Jerome Parish Church commemorates its 21st anniversary, more
commercial, business and  residential buildings will spring up around the
church vicinity signalling further growth in parish population. Unlike
the distant traffic-infested site of the Archdiocese in Intramuros, the
Parañaque Diocese is a mere 8-minute drive from Alabang. The  short
access to the Bishop, the Diocesan Office and the Presentation of the
Child Jesus Church where the Bishop celebrates mass will provide a closer
and warmer  inter-parish linkage that was not possible before. (On
Christmas day, my entire family and I heard mass at Paranaque which was
concelebrated by Bishop Jesse Mercado with his brother-priest Fr.Edwin
who came for the Mercado family reunion there. After the eloquent,
profound and touching homily of the Bishop, the congregation erupted in
applause. I could not resist imagining Fr. Grato concelebrating mass with
his brother Fr. Richard and his other brother-priest at St. Jerome's
altar!)

With the 4th World Meeting of Families in Manila this month, the dominant
role of the family in the life of the Filipino and the strong family
links converging in the new Diocese, it is only fitting for parishioners
like me to revere New Year 2003 as Whole Family Year.

Let me know once you have fixed the problem and I will try to benefit from it.

The only concern that I have is the time factor.  Calling them and trying to fix
the "obstacles" for $20 (maximum) doesn't seem to be the wisest use of your very
valuable time.  But then again, that is my personal opinion.  Believe me, I will
take that $20 anytime but I think that I can make that in other means which
require less time consumed and less risk.  My two cents worth.

There are a lot of people going through this process and if they ever
commit some kind of fraud with your information then they will get
sued themselves.
I recommend calling them and telling them you do not wish to give out
your social security number and make arrangements in some other
fashion.

W32/Yaha.k is rated as MEDIUM RISK FOR HOME AND CORPORATE USERS. This
mass-mailing worm attempts to send itself to email addresses found on an
infected system. It will try to disable anti-virus and security software and
contains code to deliver a denial of service attack on a specific remote
system.
This virus may spread via a variety of different emails, including versions
that appear to come from a known security software vendor, such as
McAfee.com, Norton or Trend Micro. This email variation masquerades as a
virus warning and asks the user to download a protection tool, which is, in
fact, the virus itself.

This worm propagates via email using its own built-in SMTP engine.
This virus can "spoof" the "from" field, so that the apparent sender is not
the actual sender of the message.

The email can contain a wide variety of content and attachments.

             Kamusta ron kamo tanan? It’s been a while since our last
Balita. Several people from Igbaras have passed away since then but its
already old news. The mayor is working on a sports contest leading to the
big Fiesta in May and also working out the details of the celebration
that will include our Balikbayan gathering. Do you realize that it is
less than five months away? In fact, if there is anyone out there who has
purchased his or her ticket for Igbaras for a reasonable price, please do
e-mail me. If most of us who are planning to spend summer in Igbaras can
buy our ticket from one travel agent, maybe we can get a discount because
of the volume. Well, just a thought! And if you have finalized your trip
back home, please let me know your itinerary so that I may forward it to
the Commission on Filipinos Overseas and that they will be able to fetch
you at the International Airport.
             I have received a number of your entries for our IGBARAS
FAMILY ALBUM from as far as Australia to Hongkong but mostly from Canada
and the USA. I still need you to turn in your submission. We will delay
(maybe for a month or two) the publication of this project until we can
at least get the minimum number of 75 entries. If you have not done
anything about our Family Album, this is your chance. Take a moment from

IGBARAS 2003
1. "Igbarasnon Guid Takon." A very generous kasimanwa who is humble and
thus wants to remain anonymous has produced on her own a ROSTER OF
IGBARASNONS in North America. She has donated this booklet to us all and
I have them in my possession and they are ready for distribution. If you
wish to receive a free copy, please send me a self-addressed stamped

2. The Igbarasnon is fascinated with arriving in Igbaras unannounced (for
effects you know, he he) so as to surprise family and friends and well it
takes out the possibility of requested “pasalubong.” I think this is one
of the reasons why most of us will not say if were going back home this
May. Consider this however, the Commision on Filipinos Overseas, an
official ministry of the Philippine government has pledged to “fetch” or
welcome all Igbarasnons upon their arrival at the N.A.I.A. (Manila
International Airport). In order for this to happen, you need to e-mail
me your itinerary, the number of people in your party and you will arrive
with style and dignity in Manila. Kasimanwas who wish to avail of this
service should e-mail us A.S.A.P. “Daad kon may plano kamo nga mauli sa
Igbaras sa Mayo, tanan kita sara lang ang aton travel agent.
Maka-discount guro kita. Kon may interesado, tawgi ninyo ako.”
3. “Igbaras Celebration 2003, a chance for all Igbarasnons to come
together!” I know that some of us can not make it to Igbaras this coming
May for one reason or another. That said, it doesn't mean that you cannot
be with us in spirit. And why stop there? We ask that “kon sin-o and indi
makauli sa Mayo,” maybe you can opt to help in one of our many projects.
Maybe donate a prize, help fund the soup kitchen,  or our miss-miss, send
some of your hard earned dollar for the aid of the parish church or maybe
even ask your paryentes in Igbaras to lend their helping hands. You see,
just because you cannot make it to our “Dutang Pinalannga” this summer
doesn't mean that you are out of the loop. Join us as we show the world
Igbaras’s own Bayanihan Spirit. Come to think of it, since you are not
paying for your own fare, maybe you can help out more, I guess this is
challenge to  all of you who cannot be in Igbaras this May. We ask you to
do your part to  make this “Pagtiriripon 2003” the most memorable to all
Igbarasnons and one that our tumandok will always cherish.
