This is just my opinion, but I think everyone in the field of instructional
design needs to have a portfolio.
Portfolios are valuable tools for staying organized, encouraging self
reflection, facilitating professional networking, and, of course, getting a job!
These days, most portfolios are online. There are hundreds of online portfolios
related to instructional design, here are just a couple of examples:
http://www.markpella.com/index.htmlhttp://www.cathy-moore.com/http://www.ghant.com/http://www.ryanreilly.com/
If you already have a portfolio, now is the time to update it. If you don't have
a portfolio, then you should start one today. I recommend Google Sites
(http://sites.google.com/) for top notch free web hosting, but there are many
other free and low cost alternatives.
The best thing you can do to create or improve a portfolio is to take the best
parts of the assignments you turn in each semester and add them to your
portfolio. You don't have to (and probably should not) include every assignment
in whole, but select the best part of each assignment. A portfolio artifact
could be as simple as a test from an online course, an evaluation rubric, or an
instructional analysis. Fewer high quality items are better than a lot of
mediocre stuff when it comes to porfolios.
If you view assignments not as busy work or simple hoops to jump through, but as
opportunities to add to your portfolio, grow as a professional, and enhance your
job prospects, then I think you will find courses much more relevant and
interesting.
I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but in this day and age, if you do not
have a professional looking and updated online portfolio, then you really aren't
serious about being an instructional designer, trying hard enough to be a top
graduate student, or adequately preparing yourself for getting a job, finding an
internship, and advancing in this career field. Boom! Simple as that.
Also, contrary to what you may have heard, for those of you who want to go into
academe as a professor, you need a portfolio, too. Your portfolio might look a
little different, but you have to have one. Remember, competition for professor
jobs is, I don't know, about 100 times more intense than other ID related jobs.
So, PLEASE, if you do not have a portfolio, start one right now. If you have
one but haven't updated it in a while, now is the time to do it. I can't stress
enough the importance of having a portfolio but to your own professional growth
and development and to your future job prospects.
If anyone has a portfolio they would like to share with us, please send a link
to the list.
If you would like to talk about portfolios more, please contact me, your
advisor, or one of the other IDD professors. I know we would all love to talk to
you more about it.
Thanks
Dan
