The list Iconographie has been set up to facilitate international discussion in the field of Classical and Hellenistic Greek art, especially painting and sculpture (a discipline known within the classics as "iconography" rather than "art history".
This list is not meant for the discussion of mediaeval or modern Orthodox Christian icons, except in the exceptional case where ancient art is particularly relevant to the iconography of an icon. This list may not be used to circulate or advertise financial services or items for sale, including antiquities and reproductions of ancient art.
No question within the list-topic is too stupid or insignificant to be sent to the list (perhaps including requests for other members to report on details on an artefact to which they have access). We hope to make the list available to students of all levels and interested laymen, as well as the most erudite of scholars.
