RJ.03 IBIS homebuilt aircraft - the "French Canard"
Welcome to building and operating the
Junqua RJ.03 IBIS, an advanced French
canard airplane design.
The IBIS is a
two-seater canard that is easy to build and fly. It has modest power requirements (
65-80HP direct drive or rotary engine weighing up to appr. 75 kg). So far all IBISes sport either a
VW aero engine (1835-2180cc, Limbach, Sauer, JPX, GreatPlains, etc.) or a Jabiru 2200, the latter of which is
no longer recommended.
IBIS is built
almost entirely of wood; the modest power requirements result in:
- low procurement costs
- low operating costs
- low maintainance cost
Unique are the
flaperons (combined flaps/ailerons), that reduce take-off and landing speed somewhat (thus improving on other canard designs), and even more importantly they
improve low-speed pitch stability as well.
Also, with deployed flaps
visibility is even better than in normal flight, which can best be compared to that of a modern glider.
In
cruise condition, the flaperons are set to -3 degrees (=Up), which has two effects: the main wing gets a
more symmetric shape which
reduces drag and the main wing section's
pitching moment is recuced as well, so the canard wing needs to
work less to balance the plane,
further reducing drag.

PLEASE NOTE: IBIS is not an LSA or UL. Due to her wing loading and stall speed, IBIS can not be licensed as an ultralight or LSA aircraft.
