Thanks for the info Sue. I am hoping to go to the national meeting in
Baltimore. I have many teachers behind me now that they are going through
with what I have been dealing with for 12 years. My local association
printed my questionaire and I will be giving it to all teachers on Monday.
That is my second step as I have already made some important changes in my
room that help somewhat. I will continue on with my fight and even have some
parents that are going to help out. I havent been to the superintendent yet
because we are under so much pressure about SOLs.
If anyone else has any info that might help, please let me know.
Thanks,
Stephanie Heard
Letitgo@...
Two years after suspecting that my daughter's elementary school had a mold
and ventilation problem, my daughter's school district has decided to "move
up" renovation and rehabilitation plans for the building; the building
will be closing in December and the students will be moved to another elementary
school for the rest of the school year.
Several factors contributed to getting action instead of nods.
For one, my daughter's music teacher filed a Work Comp claim after finding
out that, once again, she had fungus growing in her sinus cavities.
I kept in close contact with the district Health and Safety personnel;
made copies of district reports about problems in the building; met with
the school principal, the district's expert, parents, and others; spoke
with the union president; contacted the Minnesota Council on Disabilities
and OSHA; and, finally, suggested that the district retain a specific environmental
expert to evaluate the building.
It helps to feel that you are not "the only frog in the choir" by enlisting
support of other affected people. You might ask the union to send
out a survey to everyone who works in the building to get an idea of the
percent of people who are symptomatic. If the number of people who
attribute symptoms to the building exceeds 10 to 20 percent, it is very
likely that it is the building that is "sick," not the employees!
If there are state funds to correct the problems, the school district
might be more enthusiastic about repairing the building. It is important
to use qualified contractors or the problems can be made worse!!!!
I wish I could say that I have had success in the buildings I teach
in. I have been providing information to a "sick" group of teachers
in my buildings so that they can take action. I decided to "take
a step back" after our district health and safety coordinator, whose IAQ
committee I served on, told me I have "mold on the brain." (Unfortunately,
I am starting to believe he is right!)
Some of the schools in Minnesota have contacted the media which is now
interested in knowing about these problems. Our Star Tribune has
run many articles about "sick houses" and "sick buildings." The news
reporters have been extremely supportive!
Does this seem like a lot of work when you are sick yourself?
Yes. I have been battling "sick building syndrome" since we purchased
and moved into a "sick house" in 1994. Our whole family has been
ill. The medical bills have been phenomenal. There were weeks
when I wondered if our 2nd grader would ever be able to go back to school.
Educating those around you is so important. Ignorance of the severity
and prevalence of mold problems is one of the biggest roadblocks to success!
I obtained brochures from several allergy and immunology centers, information
from IAQ engineers, and booklets from our state Department of Public Service.
Again, it helps to have some help!
Well, I did not mean to "talk your ear off." I get pretty emotional
about this issue. Feel free to email back! (Let me know if
these suggestions help at all.)

is a problem in a number of the 54 buildings within our school district. The
superintendent appeared to be interested and concerned and said she was
very interested in having training, etc. I volunteered to help in
any way possible. I wrote an article in our clerical union (of which
I am an executive board member) news letter and received numerous letters
of persons concerned with the health in their buildings. I have obtained
kits for several schools and have offered to help initiate the kits. When
I saw a flyer from the AASA offering to sponsor persons to attend the August
IAQ conference, at no cost to the district, I had the flyer brought to
the attention of the district's Administrative Council. The district
agreed to send 2 people to the conference. I personally talked to
people in attempts to get people to attend, but the deadline came and went
and our district did not get anyone registered. I am extremely frustrated
in our district's failure to take the issue of the quality of air in our
buildings seriously, especially since I have now gotten asthma which I
did not have several years ago. My allergy
problems get better when I leave the building. In an attempt to make
it work, I have begun weekly allergy injections and have to take two daily
asthma inhalers as well as have my emergency inhaler with me. My
building has a serious mold problem and I am extremely allergic to mold.
The district is aware of this and has taken a few steps to help with the
problem. Unfortunately, it has not been enough. The problem
persists. I filed a workman's comp. claim
and the district did pay for my sinus surgery as well as make those few
changes. Unfortunately, my symptoms have worsened and the district
no longer appears to care. Does anyone have any suggestions as to
what I can do?

I have come to realize just what a lonely and frustrating struggle it is to
deal with these environmental issues. It is nice to have this sounding board
for those of us who really do understand that these are real issues and we
are not crazy!!!
I have found that although mountains are moved one stone at a time, it does
help if you can align yourself with a group who can carry the heaviest
stones. Is your union willing to get involved and take a stance? How about
the teachers or another bargaining group? Is there a school board member you
can meet with? How about the PTA's of some schools where teachers or
students have complained? Parents have a lot of clout.
My stance has always been to try and problem solve together rather than come
in angry. Gathering specific data might help such as statistics on how many
days of work have been lost due to environmental issues, how many people have
developed asthma, etc.
All in all, there are no easy answers. The bottom line is always money and
there is never enough to go around when you are competing with books and
computers for kids.

Hi Sue. Just like your daughter's school, the building that I am in has many
problems that need to be addressed. Many of the new teachers to the building
have had respiratory problems already. They are willing to help me fight
this battle.
What I need is how do I start this thing as far as the right people to
contact. I did attend the training in November, but I still need some
additional info. I am hoping to go to the national meeting in August. So
many people want to get this building straight except the head people.
If you have any additional info that might help me, please send it.

Have you been following the recent news reports about renovations in
local "sick schools?" My daughter's school in Plymouth will be closing
for several months next year to make repairs and update the ventilation
system. This is long overdue as my daughter has missed dozens of
school days this year and last due to allergic-type reactions.
Pike Lake Elementary in the Mounds View school district was on the news
tonight because of complaints of health problems that may be attributed
to molds and poor ventilation. It had been closed for repairs once
before but many children and teachers may be experiencing symptoms that
are due to those problems.
All in all, it is so important to make sure that "experts" are truly
"experts" when the health of children is at stake.

Hi Christine.
I am getting the NEA HIN at my old address. I am now at 4204 Knowles Ave.,
Kensington, MD 20895.
TFSK progress is slow, but we succeed in a) getting them to keep the kit
intact and B0 sending it out to schools in advance of its use or
coordination from Facilities Management. They will be housed in school
libraries and principals will be told they can either use it or wait for the
HVAC team to service them and use the kit to create a building maintenance
plan as well as educate the staff.
Meanwhile our committee limps along with too few members!!
Take care,
Jen

The carpet had been down for 14 years. It was very dusty - we have 700
students and they were vacuumed about once per week. They were cleaned
twice per year and some had grown mold in that process because the carpets
weren't dried correctly. Just removing the carpets in the halls - not the
classrooms - has reduced the dust. The halls had more problems than the
classrooms because they have NO ventillation/heating systems there. We have
a "sealed" heating system and no windows open. We finally have the air
in-take vents open all the way and turned away from the interstate. That
has really helped the classrooms. Those two changes have made our
environment more bearable.

I read with interest your comment about changing the carpet. Was
the carpet moldy or was a toxic adhesive used? Did your school find
the source of the problem? If the source was not determined, replacing
the carpet may not solve any IAQ issues. Many schools in this area
have spent thousands of dollars replacing the carpet only to find out that
"the problem came back." Some found that there were moisture problems
under the carpet or that rooms were underventilated and provided good conditions
for mold growth or accumulation of toxic vapors.
If removing the carpet did not resolve health issues, you may want to
have bonified experts look further into the issue.

Thank you for writing back.
When I went through the Tools for Schools training program, there were several
teachers from Virginia schools in attendance. One of them told the group that
she "left the school in a stretcher" one day and that seemed to "get some
attention." Perhaps Christine Luong could share the names of some of the
teachers from our group if they are willing to share their experiences and,
perhaps, their successes.
I will send you a copy of the survey I created for one of our local schools.
You
would want to modify it based on suspected origins of problems. You may want to
start by asking the union to survey the staff to find out what percentage of
teachers feels that the school is contributing to health problems. I encouraged
my daughter's school to conduct such a survey and 40% of the teachers indicated
they felt they were ill while in school and felt better when away. When the
percent exceeds 15 to 20%, there is usually cause for concern--it is not "all in
their heads!"
A big concern of mine is who is called in to determine whether or not there is a
problem. Some of the sampling that is done by "experts" will not give an
accurate indication of the problems or determine the source of the problems.
Mold sampling, for example, can reveal different results on a day-to-day
depending on factors such as weather and air circulation. Carpet sampling,
which
is popular with some large IAQ companies, has proven not to give accurate
results. Carbon monoxide and testing for VOCs must be done in the proper manner
or tests may, again, show "no problem."
If you could give me some idea of the types of problems your faculty members are
experiencing, I will be glad to send you information about those types of
problems. I have almost accumulated a library of materials in my quest to help
make my family well again.
Thank you for sharing you experience!
Sue Stavenau
612-557-9964
P.S. There is always going to be some resistance to correcting the problems.
Sometimes it is a fear of the immediate costs; waiting to correct the problems
can prove even more costly to a school district--I now know of teachers who
have
successfully filed worker's compensation claims against their schools--and
teachers who are not well cannot perform at a peak level--and neither can their
students!

Hi Sue,
I am in the Richmond City Public School system in Richmond, VA. I would like
any help you can give or anyone else can give. I find myself being ill
several days a week because of my school.
I learned alot from the training I received but you know you have to have
people back you up in your school and district. I am beginning to get some
support at school from some of the other teachers because they are having
problems also. I just seem to be the only one with enough nerves to stand up
to the head people.
I hope that your daughter will get better with the improvements in her
school. She had to miss too many days that was caused by the school
environment. That is a shame.
Just let me know what you have done so I can get going. I think I know the
right people to talk to but I just need to know how to approach them.
Thanks again for any help,

Hello! Just to let you know, I was trained in a year ago. I
would really like to know what school district you are in. I am on
a Health and Safety Committee for IAQ in the Osseo School district and
am now working to help my daughter's Robbinsdale District school "get well."
It certainly takes persistence and politics to get something accomplished!
Sue
P.S. My daughter missed 40-45 days of school last year and now
we suspect she is reacting to her elementary school!

I would like to have the survey. Please send it to me as soon as possible
because our problems are growing at my school.
If anyone has any information on METHANE GAS, I would like to have that.
This is a big concern in my building since we are built over a dump/landfill.
Thanks so much for any help I can get.

I would love to get a copy of the survey you used to get feedback. My
district has 52 schools and is in the middle of a desegregation law suit, so
the focus and interest for administration has been minimal. I have one
school so far that is working on IAQ and have incorporated it in their
School Improvement Plan. I need to get feedback from other schools so that
I can get the information to them.
Thanks for your offer.

FOR RELEASE: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2000
SOME CONSUMERS REMAIN UNAWARE OF ALLERCARE* RECALL
On January 13, at the urging of the Environmental Protection Agency,
S.C. Johnson and Son, Inc. issued an immediate voluntary recall of
AllerCareJ Dust Mite Powder and AllerCareJ Dust Mite Allergen Spray for
Carpet and Upholstery. The recall is based on more than 400 incidents
from consumers reporting medical problems associated with the use of
these products. Some of the serious symptoms that have been reported
include: asthma attacks, respiratory problems, burning sensations, and
skin irritation.
Since the Jan.13 recall, the company reports that 98 percent of the
products have been removed from store shelves.
However, some consumers unaware of the recall have continued to report
adverse effects from using the products. To
ensure protection of public health, EPA again urges consumers with these
products in their homes, particularly
those with asthma, other respiratory conditions, or allergies, to
consult their physician if they have concerns.
To return the products, consumers should contact S.C. Johnson and Son,
Inc., toll free at 1-877-255-3722.
For further information, consumers may contact the National
Pesticide Telecommunications Network at
800-858-7378, or visit EPA's web site at http://www.epa.gov/pesticides.
If consumers need additional information
on allergic diseases or asthma, they may contact the American Academy of
Allergy, Asthma and Immunology at
800-822-2762, or on their web site at: http://www.aaaai.org.

ALLERCARE* PRODUCTS RECALLED DUE TO
ASTHMA AND RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS
Today S. C. Johnson & Son, Inc. issued an immediate recall of AllerCare*
Dust Mite Powder and AllerCare* Dust Mite Allergen Spray for Carpet and
Upholstery. EPA urged the company to initiate this action based on
incidents from consumers who reported experiencing asthma attacks and
other medical problems associated with the use of these products.
Today's action will result in a voluntary stop sale and full recall of
these products from retail store shelves. EPA is conducting an
extensive scientific investigation into the reported reactions to ensure
protection of public health, and is overseeing the recall closely. The
products are being removed from store shelves immediately. The Agency
also is working with other government agencies on this issue.
Consumers who currently have this product in their home, especially
those individuals with allergies or respiratory conditions, should
consult their physician or allergist before using the product. If
consumers want to return the product, they should contact the company,
S. C. Johnson, toll free at 1-877-255-3722. AllerCare* was labeled to
control dust mites, which may contribute to allergic reactions in
people. Some of the serious symptoms that were experienced include:
asthma attacks, respiratory problems, burning sensations, and skin
irritation.

Happy New Year!
Welcome to the NEA HIN Indoor Air Quality Schools Forum. We had training from
November 17 - 19 in Washington, DC. We agreed to begin a dialogue that would
allow others who are trained in the future to join our group. This will be a
great way to empower ourselves and share valuable experiences, knowledge, and
lessons learned.I encourage you to share what has been happening in your area
regarding indoor air quality. I welcome your ideas on developing this listserve
to ensure its potential to focus on environmental concerns that impact the
quality of school life in America.
