I am sorry, seeri@...  is the only

even recently, so I do not know what the
problem could be.
I will forward, in a separate note, the relevant portions
of the SEERI Conference announcement which

you could try the direct link there?
Apologies if this too does not work.

Dear George,

THe funeral will take place on Saturday ( 5th of
November) at 12.00 in the afternoon, at the St
Ephrem Suryoyo Monastery in the little town of
Glane/Losser in The Netherlands.

Address:
Glanerbrugstraat 33.
7585 PK - Glane ( Gem. Losser)

H.H. the Patriarch Mor Zakka I will arrive on
Wednesday in the Netherlands and will be on
Thursday in Enschede/Hengelo ( 8km / 3 miles away
from the the monastery) where the majority of
our people reside. Many Bishops and other
priests from our church and other denominations
together with approximately 10 - 15 thousand
believers will attend this funeral.

Right now hundreds of believers visit the
monastery every day. I wonder if the monastery
will be reachable by telephone in these hectic
moments.

For those who wish more detailled information
please e mail me at:
Ashuroyo@...

Shlome sagiye,
Matay beth Arsan, M.D.

Kommentar:

Dear Fr. Dale,

I was just curious. I know you got the library list of Syriac manuscripts from
Mosul translated into English and published but I would like to know where I can
get a copy of it. This was back in, I think, 1997 or 1998.

Thanks and blessings,

Steve Ulrich

Many thanks indeed. I will try this out.

Perhaps someone at SEERI could look at creating a website and use
Paypal to take payments? Any schoolboy could do this, and India --
particularly Christian India -- swarms with technoliterate people.

All the best,

In case anyone is interested, a year or two ago I ordered a number of SEERI publications from Merging Currents (http://www.mergingcurrents.com), an online Indian bookseller that specializes in books on Christianity in India.  They carry a number of the SEERI titles at quite reasonable prices, and I found them to be very reliable and user friendly.  Below is a list of the SEERI titles from the Moran 'Eth'o series links for each (I just pulled it off of their website).

Unfortunately, this does not include The Bible in Syriac Tradition, which as I understand it is part of a different series.  If I’m correct it is a part of the institute’s correspondence course for students.  Perhaps it might be worth contacting this bookseller about the possibility of ordering it through them?  If someone does so with any success, please let the list know.

I also got a copy of a Moran Etho volume from them, without
difficulty. Curiously it arrived in a package where one end was
open, and held closed by a ribbon, presumably so that Indian customs
could open it with more ease. But arrive it did. However their
list is not complete, and their volumes are advertised as second-
hand.

I have received a catalogue from SEERI after emailing for one last
night.

All the best,

Dear All,

I would like to ask if anyone of you knows about a somewhat generally
accepted dating of the Sinaiticus Syrus (Sin. syr. 30), I am of course
thinking about the upper layer. The problem arises from the physical
condition of the colophon, which makes some of the numbers of the date
either impossible or difficult to read.

I come across several different dates:

Kamil, Brock: 778
Husmann: 708
Burris & Van Rompay (Hugoye, 5:2, 2002): in 779, or perhaps in 698

Heinrich Husmann (Ostkirchliche Studien, 1975) seems to present a good
case for 708, but after him both Brock and Burris & Van Rompay claim other
dates.

In 1937 the distinguished syriacist Herman Janssens wrote in his
edition of L'Entretien de la Sagesse of Bar Hebraeus (p.8) as follows:

I wonder how many syriacists today would still be willing to endorse
such thoughts.

Philip,

William Wright makes similar scathing remarks in the introduction of his book
reviewing Syriac literature. But not I! The spiritual contribution of Christian
Syriac culture is unique, priceless and in my opinion unsurpassed. Amongst the
early Christian traditions, only in Syriac Christian writings are we able to
understand the gospel message and the spectrum of Christian spiritual experience
from a cultural perspective that Christ himself shared. In the secular realm,
it is true, Syriac culture did not innovate. It gave to Caesar only the minimum,
but it gave to God it's most devoted attention. Hence, the intrinsic value of
the Syriac tradition depends on your point of view.

Best wishes,
Steven.

In 1937 the distinguished syriacist Herman Janssens wrote in his
edition of L'Entretien de la Sagesse of Bar Hebraeus (p.8) as follows:

I wonder how many syriacists today would still be willing to endorse
such thoughts.

Hello All,

A Talmudist friend of mine is inquiring concerning secondary
literature on dreams and their mantic power in Syriac literature. Can
anyone suggest anything at all on dreams in the primary or secondary
literature? I assume there is some late Greek medical stuff, but I am
looking for things that are indigenous to Mesopotamia. But, then, any
suggestions at all would be appreciated.

I hope all are well and the semester is concluding gracefully for
those teaching or studying.

Dear all,

This academic year, I hope to finish my Master's thesis in Theology on
Ephrem the Syrian's view on God's unattainability and His self-
revelation in the Hymns on Faith, with special attention to his ideas
on humility. Within this project I am working on an index of the Syriac
vocabulary in these Hymns. As I have only studied Syriac during one
year (except for the 45 hymns I worked through on my own), I wondered
whether someone with a good grammatical knowledge and some more
background in Ephrem's writings would be interested to help me now and
then concerning grammatical issues.

With kind regards,

Charis Vandereyken-Vleugels

I would LOVE to read your thesis when you are done. It is a topic dear to my heart, both in terms of study and reflection. I don't think I really am a grammarian, so I don't think I can help much there, but I did write on a related topic in Journal of Early Christian Studies 8, 1 (Spring 2000) "Ephraem the Syrian on the Utility of Language and the Place of Silence". Kees den BIesen is doing a much larger project on the topic of silence in St. Ephraem that might help you a lot if you can get some pointers from him.
Please let me know how to get a copy of your work when you are done. Let me know if I can help.
Merry Christmas!

If anybody knows some syriac writers (except Ephrem and some well

I wrote an article called "Aphrahat and the Rabbis on Noah's
Righteousness in Light of the Jewish-Christian Polemic" which focuses
the character of Noah (not on the flood per se) It can be found in
The Book of Genesis in Jewish and Oriental Christian Interpretation,
ed by J Frishman and L Van Rompay , Peeters, 1997. NKF

Dear colleages!
I want to express my very thanks for your quick and competent
answers. Some of your hints I do already know, but obviously not
all. The experience now was: There are indeed some other people, who
do similar things. I will not 'fight' alone ...
Thank you.

Codex D/05 contains in Lk 3:23 – 3:38 a weird genealogy of Jesus, a mixture of
Mt and Lk, but it's not one of the many idiosyncrasies of D, because Aphraates
reads exactly this genealogy, too (Demonstrations 23.21)!
Also, the addition of the following names in D,
TOU AMASIOU TOU IWAS TOU OCOZIOU,
also occurs in Mt in Sy-C, Aeth and Epiphanius (4th CE), where D unfortunately
is not extant.
Unfortunately the Curetonian Syriac is not extant at this position in Lk.

I conclude: This obviously secondary genealogy can be traced back to Syria, at
least 4th CE. Perhaps, it is an attempt to add a genealogy to the Diatessaron?

Does anybody know of other sources that use such a "combined" genealogy? Is
there anything published on this?

Best wishes
     Wieland

Hi everyone,

Someone told me that I should give a link to this site

http://whyagain.com/KhaburisKhaboris/index.php

from the Bible MSS site (http://purl.org/BibleMSS).

Can any of you give me a short description of the Khaboris manuscript?
Is it worth pointing to from the Bible MSS site? (The site that
contains the Codex Khaboris images looks a bit looney.)

Hi Tim,

Apart from some approximately 17th century repair-folios, it is a MS of the
Syriac gospels with the Acts and epistles of the Church of the East in the
Peshitta version. From the nature of the Estrangela used in the older folios, I
would estimate that it dates from the 7th or 8th centuries AD. There are some
Syriac vowel points here and there, but the vowels might have been added at a
later date.

I have not studied every page, far from it, but the gospel texts I read were
very conformant to the Peshitta. As such, although the MS is old, it may not
contain much of textual interest. As you probably know the East Syrian Peshitta
gospels were published in the 19th century. I will have another look at it if
you want more details...

Regards,
Steven.

Yours

Tim Finney
