I'm attaching a flyer from Blueprint Houston that invites all Houstonians to
participate in one of the upcoming area meetings to voice our visions for
Houston's future and our ideas to plan for our city's future. There will be
a follow-up Citizen's Congress at the George R. Brown on May 31st. The
website for this citywide citizen initiative is
http://www.blueprinthouston.org

Personally, I'd like Houston to use its current "energy capital" status as
an opportunity to branch out to include renewable energy. The Zilka family
sold its fossil fuel based company and now owns Zilka Renewables. Other
investment-savvy people are also getting into renewables (look at the people
behind Green Mountain Energy), so I think there can be a real case for
Houston, which is known for its entreprenuerial spirit, to be on the cutting
edge of expanding our use of various sources of energy. With NASA here, why
not try to get funding for beaming solar energy back to earth? (There was an
op-ed in the Chronicle about this not too long ago.) Maybe I'm dreaming,
like when I dream that instead of the American Flag flying over the American
General Building, there is a windmill.

Whatever your vision may be, please attend one of the area meetings to share
that vision and voice your priorities for the City's future.

We got another Earth Day request. And I think we may get one from Brazos
Bend State park too. I suspect this one might have more people than Brazos
Bend, but have no way to know for sure.

I know we can't do everything, but can anyone do this one?
If the date and time work for a couple of you, we could say yes. The best
time to transfer displays would probably be at take-down of the Rice event
on the 12th.

Please let me know if you want to do it.

This is a great opportunity for exposure because we have 12,000 people on
campus. Please note in the letter that we offer a small honorarium to
non-profit groups that have a booth or supply a speaker. Please get back
with us as soon as possible.

Thanks for the announcement and for helping organize Chris.  Sorry for my mistake on the date.

Another thing I noted on the website was:
Houston Earth Day will also be collecting old eye glasses, batteries, cell phones, inkjet cartridges, and computers (no monitors or printers, please) for local reuse and recycling programs. So bring them to the festival and help out your community.

I hope to see many HREGers there!

SUBJECT: Ask Senator Smith to Support a Cosponsor aStrong National Renewable
Electricity Standard Bill!

SUMMARY
As a member of the Senate Energy Committee, Senator Smith (R-OR) has the
opportunity to play a key role in advancing a strong Representatives Udall
(D-NM), Udall (D-CO), and Leach (R-IA) recently introduced HR 1294, a
Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) bill that requiresrequiring utilities to
generate 20 percent of their more electricity from clean renewable sources by
2025. An RES wouldThis bill would save consumers money on their utility
bills, benefit farmers, create jobs, spur economic development, and improve
our energy security. Encouraging the use of renewable energy would also
reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions that threaten public
health. Please urge Senator Smith to support an amendment in committee to
insert a strong RES into the energy bill and cosponsor the Jeffords RES bill.

Now Oregon Senator Gordon Smith, a strong supporter of renewable energy in
the past, has an opportunity to advance similar RES legislation in the
Senate. Senators Jeffords (I-VT) and Fitzgerald (R-IL) are currently working
on a Senate bill similar to HR 1294. Please urge Senator Smith to move us
toward a cleaner energy future by working with Senators Jeffords and
Fitzgerald to cosponsor a strong Senate Renewable Electricity Standard bill,
and to work to ensure that any Energy Bill considered in committee this
session includes a strong Renewable Electricity Standard.

BACKGROUND
Last session, Senator Smith (R-OR) established himself as a leader on
renewable energy issues by helping to pass a strong Renewable Electricity
Standard (RES) in the Senate energy bill. This standard required utilities
to generate 10 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
Although the RES provision died along with the broader energy bill during the
conference process, RES emerged as a prominent issue during the energy debate
this session. As a member of the Energy Committee, Senator Smith will play
a key role in ensuring that any national energy legislation includes a strong
RES.

On March 14, 2003, Representatives Udall (D-NM), Udall (D-CO), and Leach
(R-IA) introduced HR 1294, a Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) bill that
requires utilities to generate 20 percent of their electricity from clean
renewable sources by 2025. A similar bill to be introduced in the Senate is
currently under development by Senators Jeffords (I-VT) and Fitzgerald
(R-IL). Senator Jeffords (I-VT) is working to craft a similar bill in the
Senate.

A 20 percent Renewable Electricity Standard would diversify our energy supply
and increase our energy security and reliability, while protecting consumers
from volatile fossil fuel prices. A study by the U.S. Energy Information
Administration (EIA) shows that an RES of 10 percent by 2020, like one passed
by the U.S. Senate last year, would reduce the heavy demand for natural gas
and slightly reduce both natural gas and electricity prices. EIA found that
even increasing the RES to 20 percent by 2020-five years earlier than the
Udall bill- would lower natural gas prices, offsetting slight electricity
price increases and causing virtually no net change to total consumer bills.

The RES would stimulate domestic investment in new renewable energy
throughout the nation, creating jobs and providing income to rural areas.
According to the Department of Energy, generating just 5% of U.S. electricity
use from wind power alone by 2020 could provide $1.2 billion in new income
for farmers and rural landowners and create 80,000 new jobs.

Increasing our reliance on clean renewable energy would also reduce the air
pollution and emissions of global warming gases that threaten our health and
the well being of our planet.

The Senate Energy Committee will soon debate a new energy bill. Since
Senator Smith may cast the deciding committee vote, he will face tremendous
pressure from RES opponents to reverse his support for the standard. Please
urge Senator Smith to support an amendment in committee to insert a strong
RES into the bill and cosponsor the Jeffords RES bill. to work with Senators
Jeffords and Fitzgerald to introduce a strong Renewable Electricity Standard
bill in the Senate, and to support a strong RES in any Energy Bill that
passes through the Senate.

Dear Senator Smith,

I am writing to urge you to help ensure that any national energy legislation
includes a strong Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) requiring utilities to
increase generation of clean renewable energy.become an original co-sponsor
of legislation currently being developed by Senators Jeffords (I-VT) and
Fitzgerald (R-IL) to establish a national Renewable Electricity Standard
(RES). This bill would be similar to HR 1294, introduced on March 14, 2003
by Representatives Udall (D CO), Udall (D NM), Leach (R IA).

A 20 percentA strong RES renewable electricity standard would diversify our
energy supply and increase our energy security and reliability, while
protecting consumers from volatile fossil fuel prices. A study by the U.S.
Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows that an RES of 10 percent by
2020, like one passed by the U.S. Senate last year, would reduce the heavy
demand for natural gas and slightly reduce both natural gas and electricity
prices. EIA found that even increasing the RES to 20 percent by 2020 -five
years earlier than the Udall bill- would lower natural gas prices, offsetting
slight electricity price increases and causing virtually no net change to
total consumer bills.

Increasing our reliance on renewable energy would also boost the economy.
According to the DOE, wind energy alone could provide $1.2 billion in new
income for farmers and rural landowners and create 80,000 new jobs by 2020.
In addition, the RES would reduce the air pollution and emissions of global
warming gases that threaten our health and the well being of our planet.

Please help us move toward a clean, affordable, reliable energy future by
supporting an amendment to insert a strong Renewable Electricity Standard
into the Senate energy bill during the Energy Committee debate. Also, please
cosponsor Senator Jefford's (I-VT) forthcoming RES bill. cosponsoring
legislation to create a strong Renewable Electricity Standard. In addition,
please work to ensure that any Energy. Bill that passes through the Senate
this session includes a strong Renewable Electricity Standards provision.
Please let me know your position on this important issue.

Sincerely,

Hello all,

Houston Earth Day is coming up soon, and I wanted to send out some final
information to all our exhibitors about setup, parking, etc.

The event will run from 10 am - 6 pm on Saturday, April 19. Setup will
begin at 8 am. There is a map on our website showing the exact event
location: <http://www.houstonearthday.org/2003/location.htm#event>.

For setup, you may drive into the event area. The entrance is off
University Blvd. between Greenbriar and Entrance 8 (the main Rice gate with
a stoplight). Our entrance isn't numbered, but we'll have Houston Earth Day
signs out so you can find it. This lot will be closed during the event and
reopened at 6pm for clean-up.

After setting up, vehicles will need to be moved to the parking area marked
on the map (the West Stadium parking lot, off Greenbriar). This is also
where your volunteers should park.

If you get lost or for some other reason need to contact the organizers on
the day of the event, you can call Chris Cunningham at 832-563-4764 or me at
832-364-0765. Please use these numbers judiciously, as they are our
personal cell phones.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me (sarah@... or
713-524-4232).

I look forward to seeing you all on the 19th!
Sarah

I got this request from Green Mountain. Anyone interested?
It sounds like they are asking for someone pretty knowledgeable on grid
connection.
This reminds me that at last year's Earth Day, Green Mountain told me the
solar array dedication for the CEC building was delayed because they were
still working on getting it connected. Does anyone know if they ever did?

Houston. Its a very straightforward roof. I'd like to ask around to see if
there are local members willing to donate time to manage the project,
install the system, get the permits, and/or deal with utility
interconnection. I am hoping to get a packaged system from other contacts.
Will, of course, be some good PR for your organization. Wanted to check
with you to see if it is appropriate to solicate such interest through the
HREG user group. Any other thoughts? Feel free to call me at the number
below.
Thanks!

Yes, they did. There's a small display in the lobby detailing the

Houston Renewable Energy Group:

Our company is currently planning our 2nd Annual Earth Day Fair. We have scheduled it for Wednesday, April 23, 2003, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The purpose of this fair is to raise awareness of environmental issues, and to promote our recently overhauled, building-wide recycling program. We would like for a representative of your organization to set up and staff a booth during this time. We will be providing tables and chairs, electrical outlets if needed, and lunch. We ask that you be here between 10:00 and 10:30 that morning to set up, and bring any displays, literature and/or promotional giveaways if available. There are anywhere from 800 to 1000 people working at any given time in this building, so you have the potential to spread your message to hundreds of new people on that day. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly at 713-245-4664. Our building is located at 1500 Old Spanish Trail, at the corner of Old Spanish Trail and Greenbriar. Please let us know in advance if you will need any extra tables, electrical outlets, or any other special accommodations.

Hello Everyone~

Just wanted to let ya'll know about this opportunity that is coming up in CUBA!
Cuba has worked hard to be self-sufficient in energy, putting major effort into
research and development in renewable energy technologies. The Rural
Electrification Conference will be held in Havana the first week in May. With
Global Exchange, we will (among other things) be visiting an energy center in
Havana, called CubaEnergia to talk about projects they are doing. We'll also
have the top wind specialist meeting with the group, as well as a meeting with
Cubasolar, Cuba's national renewable energy NGO.

It's not too late to sign up! For more info., click below...

Hey HREG'er

Glad to see you all still doing great work for the development of renewable
energy tech.

I am trying here in the Bahamas as well. However, I need some help with a
lighting project. Does anyone care to supply PV outside lighting for a hotel
grounds lighting project I'm working on?

Here's what’s needed
PV Garden Lights
PV Sign Lights
PV Lights for Coconut Trees
PV Walkway Lights

If more info is needed, please let me know. I can also supply photos of the
property. This will be a high number of lights.

Please email prices and specs. Email brochure if available. I need to
present a proposal by Friday April 25, 2003

Oh, yeah, it's lunch time so I can stop & talk to you.

I don't know if you really need "PV lights" per se so much as, perhaps,
low voltage lights. There are many vendors that offer them for
landscaping use.

If you specify "PV lights" you might only find the ones with a PV panel
and a light built-in to one unit. Perhaps your hotel might not want PV
panels all over the place.

Think about a "utility room" that can be used for a bank of deep cycle
batteries and put the PV panels on the roof. Then you can run low
voltage wiring to all the lights, signs, and probably a photo-eye switch
that turns them on at sunset / off at sunrise.

The kind with a PV panel, battery and light in a unit is best for
isolated locations where the wiring isn't available.

Search Google for solar panels, solar accessories & systems. I've come
up with long lists of vendors. Then search for low voltage landscape
lighting. Just off the top of my head, I know that Sears Hardware has
them, Home Depot, etc. But you're looking for a wholesale outlet.

Thanks Randy! To an extend the hotel wish the panels to be seen, if they are
beautiful in design. This will be a conservation topic for their guest and
show their commitment for a pollution free environment. The low voltage
lights are also being considered. I'm also looking for a distributorship

Here in Farm & Ranch country we often see the PV panel / battery / light combinations used as a security light over the ranch’s front gate, which might be a mile or two from the house. These will sometimes have a motion sensor that switches on the light when a car or truck approaches the gate. I’ve also seen them used at highway construction sites to operate signal lights in a unit that is mounted on a trailer for portability.

I don’t know exactly where these come from, I only know that they are out there waiting for you to discover them.

Sounds like a neat idea, to actually teach the resort’s guests about alternative energy in a “passive education” manner. Good luck.
