Gee Kevin, if only I had thoroughly read you email....

I have just purchased a house in Seabrook and and I am moving in tomorrow.
I am seriously thinking about solarizing some aspects of my new abode.  Hopefully I can determine, within the next few weeks, what kind of load I would like to supply vs. footprint I'll need vs. available insolated sq. footage, etc.

What (about) are the dimensions of a single module?

What is your office phone number and when is generally a good time to call?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,  Not a problem, each module measures 39" x 34" approx, actual dimensions are metric.  The panels were sold for a project that never happened, they are not "new", but have never been outside in the sun.  They are Kyocera modules, who, in my opinion, have the most consistent power output and utilize very durable manufacturing techniques.  You can usually reach me in the afternoon at 281 495 0438.  Good luck in your new home.......Regards,  Kevin

Subject: Walk the Talk Wall at this summer's ASES Conference

Send Email Send Email

Hi Folks,

I don't remember if I have already made this request.
If I have, then I'm sorry for the annoyance.

At this summer's ASES conference in Austin, we plan to
showcase the efforts of individuals who have taken the
step of actually practicing sustainability in some way.
We plan to have a "Walk the Talk Wall", highlighting
each individual's efforts toward sustainability in their
home or business.

We would like to hear about actual uses of of PV, Solar
hot water, Wind, Rainwater, Efficiency improvements,
alternative transportation, etc.

The immediate intent is to recognize individuals, though
the installer's name will be part of the information. If
you are inthe business, we would very much appreciate
your help in encouraging clients to register their systems.

If you have an installation that you feel deserves
recognition, please go to

http://txses.org/solar2003/re_reg.php

and fill out the form. There will be an opportunity to
submit one photo in electronic form.

Depending on response, we may make this a permanent
feature of the TXSES web site (if you feel any of the
requests for information are invasive, please feel free
to omit).

Thanks!

- C

Just got this email from CEC. Our registration form has been sent in, along with our fees (thanks, Kathryn).
It will be 10am to 6pm Saturday, April 19th at Rice. Hope everyone will mark the day and try to make it. Lots of interesting things to see.
Can you help at the booth for 3 or 4 hours (or all day)? Ideas for exhibits? Have any kind of toy or gadget based on solar or other forms of renewable energy you can loan for our booth? The treasury is getting low - we need to win another prize!
Charlie
Dear CEC Member,

Houston Earth Day 2003 is coming up soon! We're getting really excited
about hosting a great event again this year. There are a few announcements
and invitations we would like to share with you.

First, be sure to get your booth registrations in! As added incentive this
year, we will have cash prizes for the most original non-profit booths! A
panel of judges will award prizes of $500, $300, and $100 to the three most
creative and interactive booths. Let me know if you need another copy of
the registration form, or you can download one at
<http://www.houstonearthday.org/2003/signup.htm>.

Second, we are organizing an Environmental Carnival this year for the Kids'
Zone, and we'd like to invite you to be a part of it. We're requesting
submissions for environmentally-themed games for youngsters. For example,
the Rice Environmental Club proposed a Recycled Ring Toss, with rings made
from recycled metal thrown over glass bottles. We will provide prizes for
the kids - you provide the inspiration, equipment, and someone to run the
game. Please contact Phil Levine (avram@...) if you are interested in
participating.

Third, we need speakers for Earth Breaks! Earth Breaks are short speeches
(5-10 minutes) that take place on the stages between entertainment acts.
These should address a specific environmental concern and provide
information on what festival-goers can do to address the concern. Last
year's speakers covered topics ranging from commuter solutions to
land stewardship and your lawn. If you are interested in speaking, please
contact Ryan McMullan (mcmullan@...).

And, of course, feel free to contact me with any questions
(sarah@... or 713-524-4232).

Hope to see you at Earth Day!
Sarah

Have done it in the past.
feasiblity depends, mainly on height of flag.
short poles, 12' to 18', are easiest.

technolgy available as parts, no 'flag pole light kits' that I know of.

This is a difficult application because the flag is usually a good distance
from the ground, and requires either a powerful light, or mounting the
light(s) high on the pole. The powerful light doesn't work well with solar.
If you design the system to work in the summer only it will be reasonable,
but year round requires a lot of solar and batteries, at least in the Gulf
Coast.

Hi Ryan,

Solar powered flagpole lighting is a common application but only makes
economic sense when it is more expensive to run conventional grid supplied
power to the site than light it with a stand alone PV, battery and lighting
system. One of the issues that affect cost is the amount of autonomy (how
many days you want the system to work before the next good sun day - witness
our recent and extended overcast weather) you want built into the system.
If you want it to work for 2,3 4 or more days whether we get sun or not, the
cost goes up. Do you have a budget you are trying to stay within?

Do we want to table at this event?
Charlie
Hello CEC member,

CEC's 2003 Annual Meeting is coming up on Tuesday, April 1 from 6-8 pm. We
would like to feature our member groups at this meeting by giving you a
chance to show off what you do. We will have tables available where groups
can set up information, hand out literature, and sign up members while
meeting attendees mingle and snack. This is a great opportunity to network
with other Houston environmentalists. We hope you'll join us!

If you are interested in having a table, send me an email or call
713-524-4232. Space is limited, so tables will be given in the order
requested. Tabling will be from 6-7 pm, with the presentation and business
meeting to follow.

Even if you don't want table, please join us for the meeting. Richard
Murray, director of University of Houston's Center for Public Policy, will
be speaking on politics and the environment.

Earth Day at Rice University on April 19th is just around the corner.  Mike and I took inventory of what we have to present and I think we can put on a good show.  We have a display board on HREG, showing different activities in which the group has been involved.  We have a display board on renewable energy education, presenting conservation, solar, wind, and bioenergy information.

We have several toys too. Mike's bringing a solar powered go-cart, a solar water heater, and a solar powered air lift (holds a ball in the air).  I'll bring a fuel cell energy storage system demo.  Randy has offered a solar calculator; Nubia, a solar powered battery charger; and Claude, a solar powered RC car.  Excellent!  Anything else? - Does anyone have anything wind powered?  The TSU Solar Lab will be next to us and they will have some interesting items also - have you seen their solar powered entertainment center?

We need people to stay with the booth between 10 am and 6 pm.  We would like to have 2 hour shifts with 2 people and we need more volunteers.  Come join the fun.  Reply to HREG or send Mike or myself (Chris) an e-mail.  I'll send out a tentative schedule shortly to those that have volunteered.

I think this community event is very important in light of current events.  A peaceful future will depend on the dissemination of a sustainable energy culture into our nation.  Earth Day is a step in the right direction - get involved.

Regards,
Chris

Just got this email from CEC. Our registration form has been sent in, along with our fees (thanks, Kathryn).
It will be 10am to 6pm Saturday, April 19th at Rice. Hope everyone will mark the day and try to make it. Lots of interesting things to see.
Can you help at the booth for 3 or 4 hours (or all day)? Ideas for exhibits? Have any kind of toy or gadget based on solar or other forms of renewable energy you can loan for our booth? The treasury is getting low - we need to win another prize!
Charlie

I will probably have an interview this week in East Texas, so I am not sure where I will be in one month. I got some information about a combination battery powered lawnmower and edger by Neuton. I also told Mike about a video on Wind Power in Denmark, but I think he wants to save it for the next meeting on the HREG. There is a man in Bellville, who is into windmills as a source of power. I could see if he might be interested in contributing  something.
Sincerely,
Robert Warburton

I can offer a solar cooker or two for demonstration. I've got
commercial box and parabolic, as well as a homemade funnel. All work
great. Unfortunately, I doubt I'll be able to attend.

I got a similar device from the auto parts store for "keeping up" an automotive 12V battery.
It didn't work very well. They were not expensive so I got another and wired them together.
Still not very effective.
Could have something to do with the fact that my driveway, in front of the garage door, only gets afternoon sun, not morning sun.
