Some impressive renewable energy reports from the governor's office. But not as impressive as the renewable energy potential of Texas!
I knew wind and our portfolio standard were very successful, but this still surprised me:
"Adopted in 1999, the Texas Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) required 2,000 MW of new renewable energy capacity to be installed statewide by 2009. The RPS is administered by the PUC. In August 2005, the Texas Legislature extended the RPS to expand the state's generating capacity from renewable energy sources to 5,880 MW by 2015 and included a target of 10,000 MW by 2025, with 500 MW coming from non-wind sources. The state’s installed capacity reached the 10,000-MW target in early 2010—15 years ahead of schedule."

NAA's 5th Annual Algae Production Certification Program

and Commercial Algae Production Networking Workshop

CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS

The National Algae Association, a 501(c)6, is the first non-profit algae trade association in the US to assist algaepreneurs and algae farmers in creating commercial-scale algae farms on non-arable acreage or inside large commercial buildings in the US using algae research, proven technologies and commercial algae production equipment. Algae oil can be made into biodiesel, biogasoline, jet fuel and bioplastics. Algae biomass can be made into many different co-products including nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and organic fertilizer.

To be considered, presentations of commercial technologies and equipment MUST be relative to commercial-scale algae production (not theory).  Our audience is commercially focused. THE US NEEDS TO LEAD THE WORLD IN COMMERCIAL ALGAE PRODUCTION. The algae production industry is quickly moving algae technologies out of the lab and into commercial-scale algae production. Many new algae farms are scaling up to produce algae oil and biomass for co-products. Proven technologies are being implemented today in the scale-up of the new algae production industry. Enhancements by algae researchers will surely continue as algaepreneurs and algae farmers move into commercial algae production. We are united in wanting to help the US to get off foreign oil, to create jobs right here in the US and to reduce CO2 emissions. Since the government is too slow to move into commercial algae production, algaepreneurs and algae farmers are taking on the task of building new commerial algae production throughout the US.

The algae industry is estimated to be a $1.6 billion dollar industry, so there's plenty of room for everyone. We just need to verify data, scalability and get it done!

For your presentation to be considered they must be submitted to the NAA by by Sept. 14, 2012. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.

I need an antenna that works well for Spring TX. Is there a recommendation for it since the rabbit ears with the booster or ampliflier does not work in my home? Is anyone else having this problem? Is the only option an outdoor antenna? Does anyone know someone that installs them? Contact me at evelynsardina@.... Thanks a bunch in advance.

The best way to go is a rooftop antenna placed in your attic, and then fed into your distribution system to the decoder.  I did these YAGI antennas for 35 years.

Environment Texas

Dear Michael,

Environment Texas is looking for an experienced organizer to work as our Field Organizer. Please pass this job announcement to folks you think might be interested.

Environment Texas Field Organizer

If you're looking to make a meaningful, long-lasting impact on the environmental challenges facing Texas today, apply to be the Environment Texas Field Organizer. You'll work with Environment Texas to protect and preserve Texas' clean air, clean water and open spaces.

Environment Texas is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization. We believe there's something special about Texas -- something worth protecting and preserving for future generations. Whether it's swimming at Barton Springs on a hot day, paddling down the Trinity River or hiking through Big Bend National Park, Texas' natural wonders enrich our lives in countless ways.

Yet the places we love and the environmental values so many of us share are too often threatened by powerful industries, shortsighted politicians and more. Defending our environment requires independent research, tough-minded advocacy and spirited grassroots action. That's the idea behind Environment Texas. Together with thousands of supporters from all walks of life, we take the kind of action that wins tangible results for our environment.

Environment Texas' Field Organizer will lead our efforts to win votes on our top priority campaigns, including requiring industry to cut water waste amidst the worst drought in a century, winning standards and incentives for solar power and energy efficiency, and protecting our state parks. You'll work with our citizen members and activists to engage on these pressing environmental issues. Building off of Environment Texas' network of thousands of members and longstanding relationships in the state legislature, you'll work with our expert staff to continue to build and mobilize powerful local constituencies to get behind your campaigns. You'll garner ongoing media attention to these important issues by organizing and speaking at news conferences, publishing op-eds, and meeting with reporters. You'll organize town hall meetings and rallies; lobby decision-makers; and raise money for our work through grant seeking and major donor outreach. You'll recruit interns, activists, and staff to work alongside you.

Environment Texas draws on 30 years of success in tackling top environmental problems. We helped protect the Christmas Mountains of Big Bend, increased the use of wind and solar power in Texas, and successfully sued Shell and Chevron Phillips over violations of the Clean Air Act at their Houston-area refinery and chemical plants.

                              GENERAL INTEREST

J. Warne Carter Sr.

The Passing Of J. W. Carter, Sr.

A Wind Pioneer And True Friend Of TREIA

J. Warne Carter, Sr. ("J." to most who knew him) of Wichita Falls passed away on August 8 at the age of 89. He was a significant contributor to the development of the modern wind electric generation industry. Several of his early two-bladed wind turbines populated the first "wind farm" to actually interconnect and sell power to the grid in Texas. He gained national and international recognition for his technological innovation and his commitment to seeing wind become a major producer of power for our state and country.

At TREIA's Texas Renewables 2009 25th Anniversary conference, J. received a Special Recognition Award as one of nine "Original and Continuous" members of TREIA since its founding in 1984. He was a member initially through Carter Wind Systems, Inc., and since the mid-1990s through his Wind Eagle Corp.

J. was a true friend of TREIA. In notifying TREIA of J.'s passing, Wind Eagle's David Smith said, "I know how much the TREIA organization meant to Jay and how much he appreciated all of the efforts put forth on behalf of the industry."

Solar Foundation Provides Tool For Promoting Local Government Projects

The Solar Foundation

The Solar Foundation has released a new informational product those in the solar industry can use to sell local government projects.

The document, titled Solar Accounting: Measuring the Costs and Benefits of Going Solar, introduces local government budget and finance officers to the various costs and benefits that influence a solar energy project's economic viability. Accounting is the linchpin in getting solar up on municipally owned buildings. It has to make financial sense and this document explains how.

This primer for local governments was created as part of the Foundation's efforts under the U.S. Department of Energy's SunShot Solar Outreach Partnership.

Executive Order Calls for 40 GW CHP     DOE, EPA Release Companion CHP Report

The White House issued an executive order on Aug. 30 urging industrial users to help achieve its goal of 40 GW of additional CHP by 2020. The order recommends that several federal agencies provide outreach and technical assistance, convene regional and national stakeholders to identify opportunities, and find other ways to spur investment in energy efficiency. It also cites the manufacturing industry, which consumers 30 percent of the country's energy, as a prime candidate for greater CHP implementation. The White House also recommended greater support for DOE's Better Buildings, Better Plants program.

The U.S. DOE and U.S. EPA released a report in conjunction with the executive order. "Combined Heat and Power: A Clean Energy Solution" provides an overview of CHP's benefits, barriers to its adoption, emerging drivers, and solutions to increased deployment.

ORLANDO -- This afternoon at Solar Power International 2012, Former President Bill Clinton offered words of encouragement and admiration for solar companies in America and around the globe.

Addressing the crowd whom he acknowledged are “people who represent what I believe in,” the former president said that “creative cooperation” is the only way for industry to make big accomplishments at home and abroad. “There is not a single successful example on earth of a country that is succeeding who doesn’t have shared cooperation,” he said.

According to the Solar Electric Power Association’s Julia Hamm, who introduced Clinton, he had always wanted to speak at Solar Power International but his schedule and the show schedule were simply never aligned. This year, however, to the delight of show organizers SEPA and SEIA, he showed up in Orlando at precisely 4pm on Wednesday to address a packed auditorium.

In his speech, Mr. Clinton acknowledged that he was “preaching to the saved” but emphasized the dire need for the solar industry to set the record straight regarding the economic and environmental benefits that solar power and other renewables are already providing to various parts of the globe. He said that most Americans don’t know that Germany has netted 300,000 jobs in solar energy even accounting for the draw that the feed-in tariff has had on its economy. He said that most Americans don’t know how much public-private cooperation is already happening.

Clinton also said that most people don’t really know what happened to Solyndra, explaining that in his view, it was simply a failed start-up that couldn’t get to scale before it ran out of money. “I think a mistake was made by not having the industry as a whole offer a credible explanation [for Solyndra],” he later told Rhone Resch during a question and answer session. “People will accept the fact that DOE made a mistake,” he said. He also pointed out that most Americans don’t know that $22 are given in subsidies for fossil and nuclear energy for every one dollar given to renewables.

“These are things people need to know,” he said.

Speaking for more than an hour, Clinton touched on some of key projects he has spearheaded through the Clinton Global Initiative such as using solar power in Haiti to power schools and hospitals. He said that he had learned on a recent trip to Costa Rica, that the country is already mostly powered by clean energy (hydropower) and has plans to tap geothermal and solar energy in the near future. Clean energy is not just a race between China and U.S., he said, but rather it’s about people who are thinking about the future.

“You represent the future,” he told the audience, stating that in his view people working in the solar industry are lucky that they get to get up every day, look in the mirror and say ‘I’m going to make something good happen today.’

The solar industry is in the "future business" according to the former president, reminding the audience that the industry must do everything it can with what it already has in front of it. “It is a great mistake to worry about what will happen next year,” he said. “Good and bad things happen over a long period of time and just when you least expect it, you reach a tipping point,” he said.

“You are going to win this battle, the question is when and where and how,” he said.

Commercial Algae Production Announcement

The National Algae Association is proud to announce that BARD Holdings has completed construction of a new indoor commercial algae production facility located in Calhoun, GA. BARD has leased other warehouses in GA for establishing similar kind of facilities Every day, more and more of our members are scaling-up algae production throughout the US. This proves that the American algaepreneur is alive and well. They understand that you can have all the greatest research and technology in the world but if it can't be tested in a commercial environment and proven to scale, it will not have any value in our industry.

After all, with all the noise and press releases out there these days, someone has to produce it commercially. BARD is a prime example of the commitment to commercial algae production.

What started over 50 years ago as a research project at Carnegie Mellon has become a potential $1.6 billion dollar market going foward. The private sector has had to move beyond the few government research grants and has turned the corner on commercial algae production deployment.

One of the unique benefits of BARD's platform and technology is that it can be replicated anywhere throughout the country. Sure, new advances will be made in commercial algae production but as one university on grant money stated a few years ago "all technology hurdles have been met.. it's all engineering and scale-up going forward." That is why the National Algae Association started the algae production industry over 5 years ago. Through working on 100 acre algae farm specs and drawings, testing commercial algae production equipment, constantly lowering the CAPEX and OPEX and providing our annual Algae Production Certification Program, NAA is recognized as the leader in the algae production industry nationally and internationally.

NAA wants to commend BARD for their efforts to date in pioneering the commercial algae production industry.

ORLANDO -- The solar industry in Latin America is starting to take off, aided by shrinking costs for photovoltaics and new government programs that facilitate business, experts said Wednesday at Solar Power International 2012.

The Latin American region of nearly 600 million residents holds great promise for solar, thanks to relatively high costs for electricity, ample sunlight and a fast-expanding middle class that is increasing its energy consumption, panelists said.

Puerto Rico, the U.S. Caribbean island of 4 million people, offers one of the best solar markets short-term. The island has ambitious renewable energy targets and offers both federal and local incentives for solar, said industry veteran Elias Behar, who runs Latin American sales for manufacturer SolarWorld Americas.

Chile, the South American nation of 15 million people that often ranks top for business in Latin America, also offers strong opportunities now. While its government offers no specific solar incentives, Chile has an open market and excellent sun to tap, especially in the Atacama desert, said Behar.

Brazil, the South American giant with nearly 200 million people, offers a more mid-term play instead. The country is setting up a net-metering program that will allow solar producers to obtain credits for energy sold to the grid. The government’s electricity agency expects to finalize details of net-metering this year, likely prompting a spike in solar business starting next year, said Jose Renato Colaferro, director of projects and operations for Blue Sol Solar Energy, a Brazilian distributor.

Brazil has only a small solar market now and is on pace to import just 5 MW of PV panels this year. Residential and commercial projects offer the best opportunities mid-term, but even then, small demonstration projects likely will be key to convince customers to invest in solar, said Colaferro.

“It’s not going to be quick. It’s not going to be explosive,” Colaferro said of Brazil’s solar future. “But it’s probably going to be much more organic and much more solid, when it starts.”

Mexico, with its 112 million residents, now has roughly 40 MW of installed PV, some of it from Walmart, the largest Mexican retailer. The country has started a net-metering program, allowing sales to the sole electric utility, the government’s CFE. But to gain approvals for solar projects, “put your patience hat on,” suggested Luis Cejudo, chief executive of Mexico’s Solargreen.

Financing remains a key challenge for Mexico’s solar industry, discouraging investment even when electricity can run 31 cents a kilowatt hour, triple the rates in nearby Texas, Cejudo said.

“it is easier to buy a car in Mexico now than to finance a PV system,” agreed Carlos Flores, managing director of Conermex, a Mexican distributor now expanding into Central America.

Panelists said they’re optimistic that financing options in Latin America will expand, as more U.S. and European firms look to the region to grow their solar business. Local banks and governments also may help with funding as the solar industry matures in countries south of the United States, they added.

In the meantime, veteran Behar warned solar newcomers to the region, “it’ a serious issue how to get paid.”

Folks,

Below is a nice article which highlights the shift in consumer purchasing habits. Although the survey used to produce the report was commissioned by a wind energy company, it can be applicable for all renewable energy technologies IF . . . 1) manufacturers made the commitment to use renewable energy in their production processes, and 2) consumers know about it.

And here's a link to Ernst & Young's Global Trends 2012 Report to see exactly how CEOs are are tackling the renewable energy issue. The report identifies them as *the* decision makers and along with their approach. Facing targets to reduce energy consumption and GHG by 15% and 20%, respectively, while increasing their company's renewable energy mix by 5%, they approach the challenge . . .

  • First, in terms of cost - conventionally evaluating energy costs within a 2 to 3 year timeframe (i.e. a true life-cycle analysis is still missing, therefore delaying technology adoption)
  • Second, in terms of security (this is fear based)

If the two above items become pressures for action, they do so by. . .

   1st - reducing energy consumption
2nd - increasing renewable energy usage (usually up to 5%)
3rd - phasing out old technologies and replacing them with energy efficient equipment.

Best,

Consumers More Willing to Buy from Brands Using Renewable Energy

The Global Consumer Wind Study 2012, an annual survey produced by TNS Gallup, also showed that 79 percent of consumers prefer renewable energy and 45 percent perceive climate change as one of the top three challenges facing the world today.
The report, carried out in May, surveyed 24,000 consumers from 20 counties. It also includes 32 brands: Adidas, Apple, BMW, Carlsberg, Coca-Cola, Danone, Disney, Ferrero Nutella, Gap, Google, Heineken, Honda, HP, Ikea, Lego, L’Oreal, McDonalds, Microsoft, Nestlé, Nike, Nissan, Nokia, Pepsi, Puma, Sony, Starbucks, Tesco, Toyota, UPS, VW, Walmart and Zara.

The survey asked consumers to answer specific questions about these global brands, with each respondent being asked about one brand.

The study found 74 percent of the respondents believe companies can positively affect how consumers perceive their brand by switching to wind energy. Twenty eight percent said they would get a “much more positive” perception if the surveyed brands’ products were manufactured using wind energy. Vestas says these findings show an opportunity for companies to increase consumers’ brand perception by using wind energy as their primary electricity source.

The automotive industry has the highest average score, according to the study, with 39 percent of consumers surveyed about an automotive brand saying they view the brand as climate-friendly (see chart) as opposed to 28 percent who do not. According to Vestas, this shows the auto industry has been more successful than other sectors in creating a climate-friendly profile.

The food and beverages industry, on the other hand, has the lowest score, with 30 percent of consumers saying they find food and beverage brands climate friendly and 29 percent saying they do not.

This year more than 300 companies have disclosed their use of energy for the 2012 edition of the Corporate Renewable Energy Index, commissioned by Vestas in partnership with Bloomberg New Energy Finance. This is a 200 percent increase in participation compared to 2011.

According to Vestas, this shows companies are taking a greater interest in creating transparency. It says companies are also taking action and increasing their use of renewable energy and investing directly in renewable energy projects.
Last month, the US reached the 50 GW milestone in terms of wind energy capacity installed, according to the American Wind Energy Association.

Siemens on Tuesday said it will reduce its US wind energy workforce by about 38%, citing adverse market conditions caused by federal policy uncertainties, price competition from natural gas and sluggish growth in electricity demand.

The move will affect 615 workers as follows: 407 at a rotor blade plant in Fort Madison, Iowa; 146 at a nacelle plant in Hutchinson, Kansas; and 62 more in Orlando, Florida. After the move is completed, about 220 workers will remain in the Iowa facility, 152 in Kansas and 150 in Florida.

Siemens also has a wind research and development center in Boulder, Colorado; two gearbox manufacturing sites in Elgin, Illinois; an offshore wind office in Boston, and nationwide service, parts and components supply operations.

The company has invested $100m since 2007 to build a US manufacturing presence that enabled it to become a strong number-three wind turbine supplier there, behind General Electric and Vestas. Siemens in 2011 delivered 534 turbines in the US, a 15.4% market share, according to the American Wind Energy Association.

It also has dominated the fledgling offshore turbine market, with commitments from Cape Wind and developer Deepwater Wind for its pilot project in Rhode Island state waters, and interest from Lake Erie Economic Development Corporation for a demonstration project in Lake Erie facing Cleveland.

The German-owned company reaffirmed its commitment to the US wind market and to retaining both manufacturing plants.

In a statement, the company says a workforce adjustment is necessary until market demand for turbines revives. Analysts forecast US turbine installations could reach 12GW this year but plunge to between 1.5GW and 3GW in 2013, as developers freeze projects and orders to await a decision by Congress on whether to extend the federal production tax credit (PTC).

"As a result, following the rapid ramp-up of the wind power industry over the past five years, the industry is facing a significant drop in new orders, and this has an unfortunate consequence on employment in this segment of the power industry," the statement says. "Now, we have had to make the difficult decision to adjust the manufacturing, projects and administrative support functions of our wind power operations to reflect the current and projected business volume."

Siemens officials had earlier told Recharge that they hope to boost export business to Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean, which would help utilize manufacturing capacity at the US blade and nacelle plants. Acciona, Gamesa, Vestas and other competitors have the same strategy as their own US plants wind down activity.

In response to the Siemens announcement, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback issued a statement saying that he supports the federal wind PTC, set to expire on 31 December.

“I have been and will remain a strong advocate for the wind industry. While the federal government struggles with its effort to create a balanced energy policy, my administration will do everything we can to support the industry at the state level moving forward. – and to assist those Kansans affected by this announcement," he says.

Hutchinson City Manager John Deardoff in August had expressed concern in an interview with Recharge that Siemens could slash its payroll if its order book grew thin, and over the economic impact this could have on the city. Siemens chose Hutchinson for its nacelle plant after looking at 80 possible locations across the US.

Texas Perched at Top of Vast Renewable Energy Resources – Translate into Huge Opportunities

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 02:05 PM PDT

Orbach: $1 billion for energy storage research could launch state’s next energy era

Watch for the University of Texas at Austin to soon make a $1 billion pitch to lawmakers aimed at unleashing the state’s vast potential to lead the nation and even the world in renewable energy production.

Ray Orbach, director of UT’s Texas Energy Institute, has compiled what he considers a compelling case for a large public investment in battery storage research meaningful enough to launch Texas into a new energy economy that taps the state’s enormous potential capacity for solar, wind and geothermal power generation.

“I really would like to have a crash program. My thought is it could be comparable to the cancer initiative,” he told Texas Energy Report. “I would like to see it in the billion-dollar range. My point is the potential is there. I just think it’s crazy not to sit down and optimize it for Texas.”

Orbach said a new study found that Texas has the potential to lead the nation in nearly every form of renewable energy. In concentrating solar alone – which allows for fluctuations that make it more economical – tapping just one percent of Texas’ total capacity could generate electricity equivalent to the entire needs of the ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) power grid, he said.

“We have as much energy potential above ground as we do below ground,” Orbach said this week to an audience attending a symposium sponsored by the Texas Public Utility Commission called “Renewable Solutions for Energy Prosperity in Texas.”

Citing a just released July study called “U.S. Renewable Energy Technical Potentials: A GIS-Based Analysis,” Orbach laid out what’s in it for Texas if the state’s leading scientific minds solve the energy storage puzzle:

Urban utility-scale photovoltaics:  Texas has the highest estimated potential (13 percent of the U.S.)

Rural utility-scale photovoltaic: Texas has the highest estimated potential (14 percent of the U.S.

Rooftop photovoltaic’s: Texas has the second-highest estimated potential (9 percent of the U.S.)

Concentrating solar power: Texas has the highest estimated potential (20 percent of U.S.)

Onshore wind power: Texas has the highest estimated potential (17 percent of U.S.)

Offshore wind power: Hawaii has the highest estimated potential, while Texas has 6 percent of U.S.

Enhanced geothermal systems: Texas has the highest estimated potential (10 percent of U.S.)

“The opportunities are so enormous. I was stunned,” Orbach said of his reaction when he read the study that takes into account environmental and land-use constraints, and topographical limitations.

Because each of the renewable capacity calculations is based on the same total land, Orbach said Texas leaders need to determine how to best optimize the state’s renewable resources with decisions about which fuel mix to pursue and where. In an interview, he acknowledged that political and economic considerations would pose major challenges, but he suggested a planning commission appointed by the governor and legislators could help navigate those.

Think of the planning concept as akin to the Texas Railroad Commission’s early history in setting production limits to ensure that oil and gas resources would last longer with conservation measures such as adequate well spacing, he said.  And think of state’s commitment to building CREZ (Competitive Renewable Energy Zones) transmission lines to transport wind energy as a parallel to the research commitment needed to solve the problem of energy battery storage for wind and solar.

With its federal production tax credits, Orbach said wind has posed pricing issues for ERCOT’s wholesale competitive market. But he insisted he’s a free-market advocate who does not think wind or solar would need any subsidies to compete. As for kick-starting research to solve energy storage issues, he said Texans should think of that as an investment that would repay itself many times over.

“Our future will depend on our ability to store base load electricity from fluctuating sources. We are truly blessed with intellectual and energy sources. It’s time for a zoning, an optimization of how we use these wonderful resources for the benefit of citizens in this state,” Orbach said. “This is not just a Texas issue. The market for what we produce in Texas is global. You can think outside the boundaries of our state for these opportunities.”

In addition to the big picture, some of Texas’ energy opportunities have hardly been discussed, he said. The potential for enhanced geothermal energy alone, he said, is 384 gigawatts. That’s equivalent to five times the total ERCOT load.

Geothermal energy taps into underground heat, and fracturing underground rock is one way to release the heat. He points to natural gas wells hydraulically fractured in the Barnett Shale of North Texas and their future to be repurposed in 10 to 20 years for renewable energy production. The wells have already fractured rock at a depth of 8,000 to 10,000 feet where temperatures range from 200-300 degrees Fahrenheit, he noted.

“What happens when those wells are played out? Do we just cap them and walk away? They are a source of potential enhanced geothermal energy. We have the sources now that we’re using for liquids and gas and oil that in fact may well be available in the future for enhanced geothermal,” Orbach said.

Meanwhile, the price of solar panels is dropping sharply as China floods the market with panels at 80 cents a watt, he said. Consequently, solar installations in the first half of this year doubled to 1,254 megawatts over the 623 installed in the first six months of 2011. That’s the size of a nuclear reactor, he said, and this year it will amount to two.

“It’s a revolution,” he added. “It’s a sign for those of us interested in solar and wind and renewable energy that there’s an opportunity here for Texas to be mined.”
