Dear APS: we would like to know if APS might be willing to donate a solar panel to an algae farm project we are working on in The Woodlands with the Biotech Institute at Lone Star College.  If you can be of any assistance, we can give you local and national exposure to our industry.  If interested, please contact.

Thanks,

Hi Adam,

I just heard from our customer that the lights are not on in the morning.
They have several employees that arrive before dawn and they're not on.

Now you tell me just what the fuck I'm supposed to do?

Install more timers that were never tested?

I've been in the PV business for over 25 years, and I've never had so much
trouble with any component like this.

The ball is in your court, tell me how to solve the problem.

Kevin,

Brad informed me that you are going to be back out in the field on
Wednesday. If you would like to go though the steps on the phone, I will be
in the office all day. Just let me know roughly what time you plan to be out
there so I know when to expect your call. If I happen to be on the phone
when you call, just leave a message at my extension and I will get back to
you when I get off the phone.

Again, my number/extension is 215-321-4457 x122.

Hi Adam, I tried to follow the directions, but was unable to upload the new
firmware.

The icons mentioned in the instructions never appeared.

This procedure is way too difficult and to use, and it's costing me a lot of
money and customer goodwill.

In the age of smart phones and touch screens, this product is straight out
of the 90's.

Kevin,

MSLoad is the program that is used to upload the v09 firmware to the
controller. MSLoad will guide you through several steps: selecting the v09
firmware file, selecting the COM port the controller is connected to, and
then telling you to turn on the controller.

The controller should be off when you first open up MSLoad. Choose the
firmware file and the COM port and then turn on the controller only when
MSLoad tells you to.

When the update is done a large green check is going to appear on the
screen. You can now disconnect power from the controller and then reconnect
power. This activates the firmware you just uploaded.

Great idea. While costs will depend on the individual installations, has anyone
seen any indication of the range of net cost (lease + purchased electricity) on
a per kwh basis? I'm assuming it will be more than Green Mountain's advertised
11.9 cent/kwh "Renewable Rewards" rate for users using 2,000 kwh/mo.

Thanks,
Rob

The cost does vary based on the specific details of each installation, but most of them I’ve seen so far have been between .12/kwh and .14/kwh on the prepaid lease option. This seems to be the only option that makes sense, considering that .12/kwh may be an average price today, over the 20 year life of the lease and warranty, .12 is going to look very very cheap. Not to mention that someone else is now responsible for insuring, monitoring and maintaining the array equipment and when that 10 year invert warranty runs out and it fails, the leasing company picks up the replacement tab rather than the homeowner.

On the monthly lease option, however, there is definitely a premium that extends pretty far above what you would reasonable pay for retail electricity in the foreseeable future. It’s about like purchasing a solar system on a credit card. May make you feel warm and fuzzy inside to know it’s clean and green, but it’s not a great investment.

Hi Kim,

My apologies, I have no idea how that happened, but to say it is embarrassing would be an understatement.

It was never my intention to voice my anger publicly, that was a private message that somehow was forwarded to the group.

Again, my sincere apologies to anyone and everyone who may have been offended.

Regards,  Kevin

A solar attic ventilator is featured in the opening and closing shots of a video
(http://www.click2houston.com/video/27585127/index.html) from KPRC TV, who
announced an opportunity for a Houston family to receive a FREE Energy Savings
Makeover. The Jones Family, who received a free makeover in 2009, enjoyed a 55%
reduction in their August electric bill. Click here for the video from KPRC.

Thirty Green is looking for someone to volunteer their home for the 2011 Energy
Savings Makeover. All improvements will be provided by the sponsors of Thirty
Green, at no cost to the winning homeowners. The opportunity to sign up will be
open for 10 more days. The winning home will not only receive a free solar
powered attic ventilator but, after a home energy audit, will probably be
upgraded with:

• 2-stage energy efficient air conditioning system
• new dual pane energy efficient windows
• attic sealing
• new attic insulation
• attic radiant barrier
• new foam wall insulation

The purpose of this makeover is to demonstrate again the savings that can be
achieved by making existing homes more energy efficient. For more information,

this won't benefit you, pass this on to friends who might be helped.

In WW II I was engineering officer for about two years on a submarine with 4 opposed piston Fairbanks Morse diesel engines.  The Navy copied the engine from railroad engines which were well tested and reliable.  They were very efficient and most important to us did not smoke and give away our position.

These are the engines that the railroads now advertise as moving a ton 500 miles on a gallon of fuel

We used to go 1500 to 2000 miles into enemy territory and stay about two months with no support for the engines and would almost always return to port with all four still working.

I always wondered why they were not used on more land vehicles.

Renewable Energy Could Meet 80% Of Global Energy Supply Needs

Close to 80% of the world's energy supply could be met by solar power and other forms of renewable energy by mid-century if deployment is backed by the right enabling public policies, according to a new report from researchers working with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The findings also indicate that the rising penetration of renewable energies could lead to cumulative greenhouse gas savings equivalent to 220 to 560 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide between 2010 and 2050. The upper end of the scenarios assessed, representing a cut of around one-third in greenhouse gas emissions from business-as-usual projections, could assist in keeping concentrations of greenhouse gases at 450 parts per million.

This change could contribute toward a goal of holding the increase in global temperature below 2 degrees C - an aim recognized in the United Nations Climate Convention's Cancun Agreements.

"The report shows that it is not the availability of the resource, but the public policies that will either expand or constrain renewable energy development over the coming decades," says Ramon Pichs, co-chair of Working Group III. "Developing countries have an important stake in this future: This is where most of the 1.4 billion people without access to electricity live, yet also where some of the best conditions exist for renewable energy deployment."

The six renewable energy technologies reviewed in the report are bioenergy, direct solar energy (including photovoltaics and concentrating solar power), geothermal energy, hydropower, ocean energy and wind energy. More than 160 existing scientific scenarios on the possible penetration of renewables by 2050, alongside environmental and social implications, were reviewed, with four analyzed in depth, the IPCC says.

Although the scenarios arrive at a range of estimates, the overall conclusions are that renewables will take an increasing slice of the energy market. The most optimistic of the four in-depth scenarios projects renewable energy accounting for as much as 77% of the world's energy demand by 2050 - up from just under 13% of the total primary energy supply in 2008.

The report concludes that although the proportion of renewable energy will likely increase even without enabling policies, past experience has shown that the largest increases come with concerted policy efforts. For instance, if environmental impacts such as emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases were monetized and included in energy prices, more renewable energy technologies may become economically attractive.

Currently, direct solar contributes only a fraction of 1% to total global energy supply, the report adds. Potential deployment scenarios range from a marginal role of direct solar energy in 2050 to one of the major sources of energy supply. The actual deployment will depend on continued innovation, cost reductions and supportive public policies.

The full report is expected to be made available here after May 31.
