run committee for their work!
Now that we have selected the entries, my attention turns to the people on the
wait list. If you are on the wait list and would like to remain there you don't
need to do anything. If you would like to be taken off the wait list, just let
me know and we will send you your entry and application fee back.
Runners manuals and maps will be available around April 1st. There will be a
few changes for 2004 but if you want to take a look at the 2003 edition, it is
available on line on our home page.

selection process. The salient selection criterium used by the Run
Committee was, and I quote directly from the minutes,
"Selection SHALL be inversely proportional to mental stability."
The combination day dog day care and marmot herding activities will
be based from my house in Silverton.

Greetings from snowy Los Alamos,
Below is the snow accumulation for Silverton up through the end of
January. Silverton received about 30 inches of snow during the first
week of the year but not much after that. Los Alamos got about a
foot of snow last night but I don't think there was much snow in the
San Juans from this storm. The San Juan Mountains currently have
about 94% of normal snowfall for this time of year.

The last few days of February saw a lot of snow in Silverton and the
San Juans. The San Juan snowpack is very close to normal. With a
little bit of luck and without a heat wave, we may be able to
glissade Virginius. I hope to see you there.

Deb and I are planning on driving out this year and we're bringing our dog,
Tucker. We will need either a kennel or a dog sitter for the days we are
running the race. If anyone knows of any possibilities, could you email me
offline? The best place for the kennel would be in the Ouray
direction...that way we could pick him up on our way home after the awards
breakfast.

I am thinking of putting on an unofficial no fee, no aid 50K run to 3 of
Colorado's most remote 14ers, Eolus, Sunlight, and Windom. The date will be
about a week before Hardrock, but the exact start date and time will be by
mutual agreement once we have weather forecasts. The start/finish will be
at the Purgatory campground 20 miles south of Silverton on US550.
Officially this is not a race, which would be illegal in wilderness areas.
It will instead be a group attempt on the speed record, currently 22:03. I
think that with excellent fitness and preparation it could be done in 12-14
hours, although my goal will be about 18 hours. I put together a route
description and trip report at http://www.mattmahoney.net/sunlight/ The
true distance is probably closer to 36 miles with 10,000 ft. of climb, but
since I didn't measure it, I'm calling it 50K just to be safe.
Some of the climbing will be hard. If you have any fear of heights, this
run is not for you. If you're interested, let me know, and I will put
together a mailing list.

are in good shape for this years event, as far as the snow level goes.
As I was thinking about the summer, songs began to circulate in my head
and I came up with an idea. Here goes. . . . if you have a special or unique
song that reminds you of some aspect of the HRH please e-mail it to me. In the
populist tradition of HRH, I will compile those songs and produce a HRH
musical CD which will be composed of the 12-15 most popular (most requested
songs). Feel free to send along 3-5 of your favorites but please don't send me
your entire MP3 file!!

Here is the latest updates for the 2004 Hardrock.
1. Our course director, John Cappis, has made a few course
modifications, which we believe will help in getting runners off jeep roads.
These were suggestions made by runners and we are happy to see what we can do.
We are now waiting for final Bureau of Land Management approval. Assuming we
get the BLM's approval, we will send out the course maps and runners manuals
(if runners requested a paper copy) sometime around the later part of this
month. Meanwhile, Blake Wood, our website guru, has posted the downloadable
version of the 2004 runners manual to our web site. Thanks Blake. You can also
view the updated entrants list as of today.
2. Andi Kron, who is in charge of the Joel Zucker Scholarship committee,
will be conducting interviews for the JZ scholarships this upcoming weekend.
Thanks Andi for continuing the tradition of what we feel Joel would have
thought was a great idea.
3. Please remember the new e-mail addrerss for the Hardrock is
hardrock100@.... The e-mail addrerss ddmb@... is now a dead
link.

Hello All,
Below is the Silverton snow report as of May first. April was fairly
wet in the San Juans with about 30 inches of snow at Silverton. From
various San Juan Mountain SNOTEL sites, the snow water content is
very close to normal for this time of year.
I was in Silverton over the May 8-9 weekend and there was a lot of
snow in the north facing tree slopes and above treeline. Many
avalanches had recently run on the higher slopes. There was even
snow in town, especially on the north sides of houses, from the heavy
snowfall on about April 30th. The Coal Bank Hill (10,600+') snow
gauge showed 1.5 feet of snow and water was running off the hills all
around. The Mineral Creek crossing was not particularly high but, it
was very COLD. However, the Uncompaghre River was dirty and really
roiling.
I'm looking forward to July.

Short answer = NO. Nothing is safe.
Which reminds me of my (very) early daze as a part-time
telephone survey-taker (such were the opportunities
available to recent college grads during my era, which was
shortly after the Civil War). In that job we randomly
dialed (remember telephone DIALS?) phone numbers which were
totally made up out of the vacuous air by some gigantic
Univac-type corporate computer which spat them all out on
punch cards (remember punch cards??). Thus and so, we were
forever dialing up unwitting "prospects" who screamed, "How
the hell did you get my number? It's unlisted!!"
Do you now suppose al-Qaeda is generating tons of
cyber-blogging spam (not to mention worms and viruses) by
precisely those same means? Some kind of evil Third-World
electronic Brainiac that spits out e-mail addresses
willy-nilly in the hopes of thwarting the entire Free World
and bringing the United States of America to its keyboarding
knees???
I think we should call up Bob Woodward and have him
investigate.

Runners and crew members are welcome to participate in the annual
Hardrock course marking. We will begin on Saturday, June 26 at 9:00
AM. Unless otherwise announced, we will begin at 7:00 AM on
subsequent days. The general starting point for the day will be my
house in Silverton - 1354 Reese Street. The schedule is posted in
the runners manual which is on the HRH web page.
WARNING: The schedule is subject to change so it's wise to verify
the details at my house daily. I will post any changes on the white
board in the entry way.
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone up in the hills in only a few
short weeks.

Hello All,
Over the years, many crew members and volunteers and even a few
runners have helped pull flags from the Hardrock course after the
run. As in the past few years, Paulette Smaltz (pjhiker@...)
is coordinating the flag pulling from the course.
Last year, Paulette went out and sent out teams to a couple of very
remote course sections, only to find that the flags had already been
pulled. That resulted in long road trips that were not needed.
Paulette welcomes all the help that she can get to pull the flags.
However, in order to keep from sending more than one group of flag
pullers over the same course section, PLEASE COORDINATE DIRECTLY with
Paulette prior to going out to pull flags. She will be at the
Silverton High School gym during runner sign-in and at other times or
email her directly at pjhiker@....
I want to thank everyone who has pulled flags in the past and to
thank you in advance for making sure you've coordinated with Paulette
this year.
