Tim (and others),

It's a good thing that you can't open that attachment. E-mails with
"That movie" as the subject line are a result of the SoBig worm/virus.
My system is not infected (I'm certain), but infected systems that have
my e-mail address stored in certain files have caused numerous messages
to be sent to me and "apparently" from me (as was that posting to the
HR100 list. I'm currently getting several hundred e-mails a day as a
result of this problem and can't wait for 9/13, when it's due to stop.

Thanks for explaining about the virus. It never occurred to me.

Subject: Hardrock entry and selection algorithm on the web

An entry form for the 2004 Hardrock Hundred, which includes info on the
qualifying criteria, has been placed on the Hardrock web page www.run100s.com/HR
(www.hardrock100.com will get you there also). Entries won't be accepted until
after December 31, so don't send them in yet - we don't want to handle the
checks yet. But make sure they are received by February 1, when we will make
the selection.

I've also put an explanation of the selection algorithm at
www.run100s.com/HR/HRH-Entrants-2004.html. It is a weighted lottery, with some
multiple-time finishers grandfathered in. Last time around we received over 200
applications for 115 starting slots. This year will probably be similar. Those
who are not selected will be placed on a waiting list. In 2002, the waiting
list had 75 runners on it, but by the time the 2003 run rolled around (the 2002
run was cancelled) there were only about 10 runners left on it, and all
wait-listed runners who showed up on race weekend were allowed to start.

I was interviewed about Hardrock for a piece on Colorado Public Radio. It
will air at 10am and 7pm local time on Thurs Sept 4 on CPR stations, and
also online at cpr.org (same times).
I hope you all feel like I did a good job representing our run.

My girlfriend, Cathy Tibbetts, has a great story about Hard Rock in this
month's Trailrunner Magazine. Check it out. She called me "her attractive"
pacer so I think life is good. Really, it's a very well-done story. HR
participants will recognize many familiar faces in the photos and names in
the story. Happy reading. See you all next year.

I am wondering if there is anyone out there with info on ordering the Nat'l
Geographic movie on HRH. I am presenting ultrarunning (the task is to view it
from a sociological viewpoint) in a class I am taking. OR if there is anyone
who can trust me with their copy until the end of November, I would pay for
shipping, etc ...

On November 1st, 2003 our friend Sue Johnston completed an incredible hiking
accomplishment. Sue has hiked all 48 4000-foot New Hampshire mountains. This in
itself is quite an accomplishment and is a goal for many hikers.

But Sue had a personal goal. and that was to summit each of these 48 peaks in
every month of the year. That means she has summited 576 peaks of 4000 feet or
more. For those of you not familiar with the NH White Mountains, the terrain and
weather patterns are typical of mountains at much higher altitudes. Completing
this goal meant that Sue has endured temperatures of well below zero, with wind
chills in the double digits below zero. Winds in excess of 50 mph are not
atypical - even in summer months. The terrain is harsh - these are not walking
paths! Snowfall can be 18-20 feet deep in the winter, with the accompanying
difficulties and dangers surrounding winter hiking at high altitude. Sometimes
she was turned back due to weather. Some of these summits were reached after
dark. Many of them were done alone. As far as we know, Sue is only the third
person to have completed this goal, and is the first woman to have done so.

Sue would never "make a big deal" out of this, but we wanted to share this
incredible accomplishment with you, her friends, and hope that you send her your
own well wishes on a task completed.

We have listed below the link to our photos from the last hike. A group of
friends gathered to bag the last three remaining peaks in Sue's quest. Mts.
Adam, Jefferson, and Madison were summited with friends - we were honored to be
among them. The day was cloudy, cool, and, at times, incredibly windy. It was
a fine day to be in the mountains, and even cooler to share it with good folks.
(and one pretty cool doggy too!). As you look at these photos, just a small
sampling of the trails that Sue has hiked, imagine doing them in the dead of
winter, on ice and deep snow, with the wind whipping an icy blast in your face,
and a wind chill of -28 or so, and you just might get a small idea of how truly
amazing this accomplishment is. Then shoot an email Sue's way and give her a
virtual high five.

There are two albums, one for the hike, and one for the last summit and
celebration.
They are:

http://community.webshots.com/album/97880808iAzVoJ (the journey)

http://community.webshots.com/album/97886738sQxPDJ (the final
summit and party!)

Greetings from the San Juans, where the first blanket of snow now covers our
mountains.
The 2004 Hardrock Hundred will be run July 9-11 of 2004. Entry forms and
entry qualifications can be downloaded from our websites (www.hardrock100.com or
www. run100s.com/HR). Selection of the field will be held the weekend of Feb.
7-8, 2004.
We would also like to invite any artists to submit your interpretations of
our run for consideration as the finishers print for the 2004 run. We will
gladly consider any artisitic visual medium. This year we are opening the
selection to include photgraphic entries. The deadline for submittal is Feb. 5,
2004.
Looking forward to seeing you in Silverton!

I've just finished the 2004 MTN RNR Trail Series schedule. This year
we have 27 trail runs, from roughly (say it ain't so) marathon class
to about 50 miles in length. They're located from the El Paso, Texas
area across New Mexico, to central and southwest Colorado.

The goal of the MTN RNR Trail Series is to provide an informal
opportunity to enjoy running in the often remote outdoors, perhaps on
trails that you're not familiar with.

The format of these unorganized runs is minimalist. There is no fee,
no pre-registration, no prizes, no t-shirt, buckle or goodie bag.
Just show up, fill out the S&R form, get the trail briefing (&
associated lies) and, map, then run. You keep your own times and run
with others or by yourself as you wish. Neither aid nor trail
markings is promised.

If you're interested and didn't receive a schedule, let me know and
I'll email you a copy.

I hope to see you out on the trails.

As we look toward the end of January, I just wanted to update everybody on the
Hardrock Hundred application procedure. Completed entries (available from our
home page) should be received in Silverton by the first of February. Entry
selection will be on Feb 8th and we will attempt to post the status of
everyone's entries either that night or on Monday. If you have any questions,
please let me know.

P.S. Feb 8th is also the deadline for any artwork/photographs that you would
like considered for this years finishers print.

The list of HRH entrants for 2004 has been posted, a big thanks to the HRH
run committee for their work!
Now that we have selected the entries, my attention turns to the people on the
wait list. If you are on the wait list and would like to remain there you don't
need to do anything. If you would like to be taken off the wait list, just let
me know and we will send you your entry and application fee back.
Runners manuals and maps will be available around April 1st. There will be a
few changes for 2004 but if you want to take a look at the 2003 edition, it is
available on line on our home page.

So long for now from the snowy San Juans!

Thanks guys! I'm sure it was, as always, a sort of bittersweet experience for
you all, and if I could say anything to those folks on the wait list, it would
be,
Hang in there!

cheers,
deb and steve

Steve has half-wittingly hit on one of the key features of the
selection process. The salient selection criterium used by the Run
Committee was, and I quote directly from the minutes,

"Selection SHALL be inversely proportional to mental stability."

The combination day dog day care and marmot herding activities will
be based from my house in Silverton.

Greetings from snowy Los Alamos,

Below is the snow accumulation for Silverton up through the end of
January. Silverton received about 30 inches of snow during the first
week of the year but not much after that. Los Alamos got about a
foot of snow last night but I don't think there was much snow in the
San Juans from this storm. The San Juan Mountains currently have
about 94% of normal snowfall for this time of year.

Hello All,

The last few days of February saw a lot of snow in Silverton and the
San Juans. The San Juan snowpack is very close to normal. With a
little bit of luck and without a heat wave, we may be able to
glissade Virginius. I hope to see you there.

Hi Hardrockers....

Deb and I are planning on driving out this year and we're bringing our dog,
Tucker. We will need either a kennel or a dog sitter for the days we are
running the race. If anyone knows of any possibilities, could you email me
offline? The best place for the kennel would be in the Ouray
direction...that way we could pick him up on our way home after the awards
breakfast.

Thanks and see you all in July,

I am thinking of putting on an unofficial no fee, no aid 50K run to 3 of
Colorado's most remote 14ers, Eolus, Sunlight, and Windom. The date will be
about a week before Hardrock, but the exact start date and time will be by
mutual agreement once we have weather forecasts. The start/finish will be
at the Purgatory campground 20 miles south of Silverton on US550.

Officially this is not a race, which would be illegal in wilderness areas.
It will instead be a group attempt on the speed record, currently 22:03. I
think that with excellent fitness and preparation it could be done in 12-14
hours, although my goal will be about 18 hours. I put together a route
description and trip report at http://www.mattmahoney.net/sunlight/ The
true distance is probably closer to 36 miles with 10,000 ft. of climb, but
since I didn't measure it, I'm calling it 50K just to be safe.

Some of the climbing will be hard. If you have any fear of heights, this
run is not for you. If you're interested, let me know, and I will put
together a mailing list.
