Hello everyone,

Below is the Silverton snow report as of the first of May. Overall snow
water content in the San Juans is around 75% of normal.

I was up in Silverton over the weekend and was surprized at how much snow
there is above 10000 feet. Many of the basins are still white and it was
beautiful. I ran up Kendall Mountain where a snow bank had stopped vehicle
traffic at about 11,400 feet. It was very easy to get on up the road on
foot beyond that point. I see no reason for the run to be cancelled
because of snow.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in July.

Charlie

Hello Folks,

Below is the last Silverton Snow Report before Hardrock. As you can
see, there's a lot more snow than last year. However, the Hardrock
watershed is at roughly 75% of normal snow water contend. Judging
from Snotel data, the spring melt is about 3 weeks early this year so
snow conditions on the course at run time should not present any
serious problems.

I'm looking forward to getting up into the snow. Course marking
starts on Saturday, June 28. I hope you're able to join us up high.

I made up a web page where you can post a list of 14ers you've climbed, and
a link back to a web page with photos/trip reports if you have one. See
http://www.he.net/~mmahoney/14er/
I just put it up Saturday and announced it on SummitPost and the
ColoradoClimbers mailing list, and so far 21 people have joined.

I hope to add a few 14ers to my list this summer. My plans are to fly to
Colorado around July 7 or 8, pace Hans Dieter Weisshaar at Hardrock, then
run the Crestone marathon, Nolan's 14 and Leadville. Hans is over 60 so he
can have a pacer for the whole 100. I'm concerned about lack of acclimation
but I will try my best.

Most of the 14ers not on my list are in the San Juans, so I want to climb a
few after Hardrock. Would anyone be interested in a day hike to Eolus,
Sunlight and Windom? According to Roach it is 36 miles and 10,000 ft. climb
from Purgatory, which is the closest approach without taking the train. I
figure with a 2 AM start we could reach Chicago basin (16 miles) by 7 and be
off the summits before afternoon T-storms. I am assuming 2000 ft/hr rate of
climb and running the downhills, but I have not hiked in this area before.
The best time for me is the week after Hardrock around July 16-21 or so.
Hans was going to go but he is running Vermont for the Grand Slam.

I looked at the schedule at http://www.durangorailway.com/ and think there
is only about 6 hours between the first and last train into Needleton (1
hour from Silverton), not enough time for a day hike. The train saves you
about 15 miles round trip on runnable trails, but you lose that in having
to carry camping gear.

Matt,
Joe speaks from experience. I vaguely remember some half-day run before HR
in 2000 around White Dome "organized" by Dr Dave that ended up being
somewhere around 12-14 hours due to some train issues....

I was figuring on more like 20-22 hours. I've read a few trip reports.

Matt,

I agree- either way it is 3 days. You can park at Molas lake, and there
is a nice trail down to the Animas, and follow the tracks to Needleton.
Camp there or up the trail a bit. Do the peaks. Camp a second night and
hike out. Or, take the train, camp a night, do the peaks, camp and come
out on the train. There are even some loops/peaks back in the Weminuche,
you could go in on the first day, hike to Chicago basin & camp, do the
peaks, go over Columbine Pass & around to come out near Silverton......
Think Vestal Peak and Wham Ridge...

Dear Hard Rockers,

I have recently seen many posts on this list about the train and hiking the
fourteeners in the San Juans. Well, I live here in Durango and am pretty
familiar with the area. One of my favorites is to run into Chicago Basin
starting across from Durango Mtn. Resort and run out over Columnine Pass to
Lake Vallecito, about 34 miles. Or you can run it, bag a peak or two and run
back out. The train? It's nice but real ultrarunners will skip it! See you
at Hard Rock in a month.

Andrew Hamilton when he broke the 14er speed record, which was 14 days at
the time. Most of the other speed records were set using the trains,
though. They packed in, started the clock at Chicago basin and timed their
climb to take the train out.

I figure 36 miles and 10,000 ft. climb from Purgatory is about 1/3 of
Hardrock, so it should take about 1/3 the time, plus a couple extra hours
for the class 3 sections, unless I'm missing something?

Steve Bremner has a nice trip report and photos at
http://cloud.prohosting.com/mtnclmbr/eolus_windom_sunlight.htm

There are some good photos of the more difficult sections including the
catwalk on Eolus and the infamous summmit block on Sunlight at
http://ourworld-top.cs.com/Schulbr354/windomsunlighteolus.htm

Hey all,

Looking forward to seeing many of you in the mountains this summer. My
dad and I fly into Durango at 5:00 PM Friday June 28. Was wondering
what the best means of getting Silverton at that time would be. I know
the train is out. Are there other shuttles, or could we carpool with
other runners arriving, or would someone be willing to pick us up?
Looking forward to seeing some mountains for a change. The skyline of
Chicago on the lake is pretty, but somehow not quite the same.

-Keith

-Keith

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to let you all know that I have finally entered in all the new
2003 Hardrock entrants into this mailing list (as well as those that have
updated their emails).

If anyone DOES NOT want to be on the list, let me know and I'll remove you
ASAP. You can also remove yourself with the instructions in your "welcome"
email. For archives, see the website:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hr100/

Hope everyone is having a great spring, and I'll see all of you in a little
over two weeks!

Don't forget about the PotLick social gathering on Wednesday the 10th, in
the Town Park, at 1pm. Bring yourself, bring your family, bring some food
(if you'd like - but we will probably have plenty!), BRING YOUR GOSSIP! :-)

Take care.

Folks

There has been so much discussion about snow conditions and weather for
Saturday's 22.5m Arriba NM run at 7am starting from the Taos Ski Area,
that I will attempt to keep everyone up-dated. This should prove
especially useful to the handful of people who will actually show up for
the event.
As of today the official weather forecast for Saturday at Taos Ski
Valley calls for a high of 76F a low of 42F. Sunny.
Currently they show 57F, mostly cloudy, 63% humidity 30.19- barometric
pressure.
There you have it.
There will likely still be a patch of trodden snow between Lost and
Horseshoe Lakes and another in La Cal Basin. The remainder of the trail
was bone dry two weeks ago.

Good Morning Hardrockers!!

We are very excited that the 2003 HRH is 3 weeks away and we are looking
forward to seeing everyone in Silverton.
I'd like to update you on a feww things to help you plan for your run.
We will not be sending out new runners manuals for this years run. Last
year's manual contains all the information that is relevant for this year. If
you have lost your manual, you can download it from our homepage. The only
change that is needed is to put the corresponding 2003 dates in the 2002
calendar.
Course marking begins next weekend (Saturday). The gathering point will be
Charlie Thorn's house in Silverton (1354 Reese St.). Charlie will maintain an up
to date schedule at his house. Once again this year, HRH will be providing each
runner with a Colorado Hiking permit; you can pick yours up at the Silverton
Visitors Center.
Check- in for this years run will be on Wednesday (7/9) and Thursday (7/10).
YOU MUST CHECK IN BY 11:00 A.M. ON THURSDAY OR YOU WILL LOSE YOUR SPOT IN THIS
YEARS RUN.
Some of you have contacted me regarding the snow conditions this year. The
San Juans did receive about 72% of the average snowfall this year.We anticipate
that most of that snow will be melted out by run weekend. The weather this past
week has been mild with some rain but it is my prediction that the course will
be relatively dry this year (Remeber a dry Hardrock course still contains it's
fair share of water).
The Joel Zucker Scholarship is alive and well.
We continue to help students from Silverton High School with their post high
school plans in the name of our favorite librarian. If you are interested in
contributing to this scholarship, you can contact Andi Kron during the run
festivities.
The annual HRH pot-lick will be held on Wednesday, July 9, at Silverton
Memorial Park prior to the long trail briefing. Bring a dish to share and your
favorite HRH stories. Thaks to pacer coordinator and HRH BOD member Andrea
Feucht for organizing this.
We are very lucky to have artist and HRH participant Jon McManus as our
featured artist this year. Jon's pen and ink drawing will be the finisher's
print for 2003.
We hope your training is going well and we'll see you in a short while.

Dale Garland
RD, HRH

The fun never stops!!
The 4th of July is a great day to be in Silverton. If you'd like to stretch
your downhill legs, there is a low-key 10K run in the morning; the Blue Ribbon
10K (named for the original entry fee of a 6-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon). Now you
have to pay an actual entry fee but at least you get a t-shirt.
Following the run, the HRH will actually have an entry in the Silverton 4th
of July parade. If you are interested in being part of the parade festivities
and you are in Silverton over the 4th of July we will be marching in the parade.
Shoe tieing inspection will be at 9:30 a.m. at Charlie Thorn's house. This is a
multi faceted theme entry-either your favorite running regalia or Hawaiian garb
is the costume de jour. Be sure to wear something that you don't mind getting
wet (if you've been here before you know why and if you haven't I don't want to
ruin the surprise)
Silverton also puts on a great fireworks display that night. We hope you can
be there for the fun on the 4th before the "fun" on the 11th!

I just got into Hardrock (after starting out 39th on the waiting

the race. There's floor space for a few Hardrockers who'd like a
place to crash the week before the race.

Couple information items.
Free movies are shown on Tuesday at the Grand Imperial. See the Silverton
Standard newspaper for the movie title. The Pianist will be shown 7/8
Also the Ouray theater is up and running and shows first run films there.
Thursday through Monday and may go to all week.
Also Ducketts market in Ouray is doing the HRH food. We got a great deal from
them so if any of you are there shopping be sure and say thanks.
The Avalanche Coffee House is alive and well. They have new owners Jay Canode
and Amy Williams, great folks. They have really expanded the menu as well as
added breakfast bagel sandwiches.
Actually we have 4 coffee houses in Silverton. Another new one this year is the
Green Table open for Breakfast and Lunch has a juice/smoothie and coffee bar.
Great healthful great tasting food. Coffeemine also has the Java Shack at the Y
when you come into town.
A new eating place called the Trail's End is definitely worth giving your
business to. They are locate on main street across from Smedley's Ice Cream!!!
They are also including a coupon in your runners packet. The other new place is
the Explorer's Club. They are open late afternoon-a cook your own food place.
They have a HUGE TV screen for those of you that want to see reruns of Jan Fiala
in the Global Extremes. Or the Tour de France. The Gold King has an all you can
eat Mexican buffet and I am told the Margarita's are great.
And you cannot go wrong at the Brown Bear.
That is my two cents.
Looking forward to seeing all of you.

Thank you Carolyn for letting us know about what is available and who is
actively supporting the HRH in Silverton. We all like to support those
businesses that support us.

If any of you have old blankets that are taking up space and you would like to
donate them to our aid stations, we'd love to have them! Just bring them with
you when you check in.

Course marking starts today. If you are interested in helping please refer to
the schedule in the runners manual and/or the updated schedule at Charlie

New business line: 719-488-8686 (303-681-2286 will be active for awhile)
New fax #: 719-488-6509 (303-681-3862 will be active for awhile)
