Silverton Standard & The Miner
P.O. Box 8
Silverton, CO 81433

October 2, 2002

Dear Editor:

As you know, this past summer saw the cancellation of the
Hardrock 100 footrace, as well as other events local to
Silverton and vicinity, due primarily to forest fires in
Colorado and their understandable ramifications.

As you may or may not know, most of the Hardrock runners and
their pacers, crews, friends, families, and many volunteers
and their friends and families usually rely on Silverton's
generally hospitable hotel and motel accommodations in order
to participate in this annual (July) event; and, when it had
to be cancelled due to those circumstances that no one could
control, almost all of your town's hotels and motels allowed
these visitors to cancel their reservations and have any or
all of their deposits refunded.

But this has not been the case with The Wyman Hotel & Inn at
1371 Greene Street.

Not only did The Wyman, by suddenly invoking some sort of
30-days'-notice-in-order-to-cancel policy, effectively
ignore the cancellation of my household's reservation and
keep our deposit, but the proprietors later proceeded behind
our backs to make yet another charge to our credit card for
the full remainder of our cancelled stay.

We feel such a "policy"--if it is or can legally be a policy
at all--is completely unfair and runs absolutely contrary to
the people-oriented service interests of any community that
relies so heavily on visitors and tourists for its economic
well-being to begin with. At the very least, the public
should be informed about such practices before anyone else
discovers their money has been seized using the excuse of
such "policy."

I would welcome any responses from anyone wishing to defend
The Wyman in these actions, and I would also like to inquire
if anyone thinks such a policy is good for any hospitality
business or for the economic best interests of your
otherwise fine town.

In their own defense, I'm sure The Wyman's proprietors will
argue that in lieu of refunding our money they issued a
"certificate" allowing what would amount to a discount on
future stays. However, the value of this "certificate" does
not equal the amount they took from us, it can be used just
partially for stays in both 2003 and 2004 only, and in order
to be redeemed additional monies must be paid to them by us
beforehand. Furthermore, (see
http://www.virtualcities.com/ons/co/s/cos30016.htm)
their property is for sale! We don't know that The Wyman
will even exist in both 2003 and 2004. As such, their
supposed resolution of our dispute is something to which we
would never agree. Would anyone?

I am appending certain documentation that you may or may not
choose to publish in your newspaper, but it serves to state
our dispute as briefly and accurately as possible. This
information has already been filed with the Silverton Area
Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau Serving
the Four Corners/Western Slope area of Colorado, New Mexico,
and vicinity.

Most sincerely,
Rich Limacher

COMPLAINT INFORMATION:
My wife and I cancelled a reservation with this hotel to
whom a substantial deposit had been paid via my wife's
Discover credit card. The Wyman's published cancellation
policy specifies advance notice of 14 days is required to
cancel to receive a refund, less a service fee. We did this
some 15 days in advance of arrival, and The Wyman issued us
a cancellation number (#0626TL). However, instead of
crediting back a refund, less service fee, The Wyman
assessed a further charge against our credit card for the
entire duration of the now-cancelled stay! This, we feel,
without our authorization amounts to theft.
The Wyman maintains that
we transferred our stay to different dates and cancelled
that stay without giving them 30 days notice, and apparently
that is the stay they are charging us for. However, this
second reservation was never confirmed, never given a new
reservation number, and we cancelled it later that same day.
Again, no res/cancel numbers were assigned to this
tentative, unconfirmed alternative stay. We complied with
their 14-day-in-advance requirement for cancelling the only
reservation we did indeed have, and we have every reason to
expect our refund, less fee. There is no justification
whatsoever for this newly imposed 30-day-in-advance
cancellation requirement.

Attention Boulderites and otherites!

Maybe some of you might enjoy a little weekend trip South of the
Border(CO border, that is).
The annual NM MTNRNNR Trampas/Truchas Peak/Leonardo run/scramble will
take place this Sat, Oct 12 at 8 am kinda near Taos NM. It's around 15
miles without N. Truchas summit, and a little more with. First 6 miles
are good runnable trail, middle section is steep scrambling above
treeline, including an easy 3'd class section on the optional Truchas
Pk. Summit, last portion is un maintained trail with hurdles. Best
alpine scenery Nm has to offer. No snow as of this minute.
No entry, awards, marking, etc, but maps and briefing are given,
results are sent out and records are kept.

Hi Folks,

The second annual Trampas /Leonardo run took place quietly and in
beauty last Saturday in the snow frosted Sangre de Cristos.
Tom Sobal apparently succumbed to the lure of Burritos and Doughnuts
that also drew Phil away to the Big Tesuque WEENIE RUN. The Minion Of
Satan from Boulder must have been warned by one of the former New
Mexican victims up there.
But the Brave (Jennifer and Ariel=K9, and Matt Heavner and Kita=K9,
having done part of the route before), the Innocent(Mike Donovan, who
had no clue what he was getting into)and the Foolish(Old Backwards Mark
Dorion, who should have known better by now) showed up.
Everyone seemed to be suckered in by the lovely enjoyable 6 miles of
trail up to Trampas Lakes. The aspens were golden, the oaks were flaming
and the weather was crisp and clear. I urged everyone on and took up the
rear behind Ol' Backwards. We were both milking our excuses of cramps
and trail gymnastics from last weeks S. Baldy escapade.
At the lake we came upon Matt wandering a bit aimlessly as he prepared
to refill his filter bottle. The 3 of us whacked the bushes up to the
"dreaded coulour" and attempted to avoid decapitating each other with
loose rocks, as the snow managed to cover the best footing on the route.
Jennifer was lurking at the saddle and the K9 division proceded down the
ridge on the "standard route". The Truchas Peak option is not the most
dog friendly route imaginable and Matt had a plane to make.
As I started up the ridge after Ol' Backwards I could see the stick
figure silhouette that could only be Mike, waving it's arms around and
heading back to the last summit where it seemed to be waiting for us.
When we got up there I asked him innocently if he'd already been to the
summit. But, "No way! It's steep! I didn't know where to go". In his
wisdom he decided we could all continue together. It only took a little
friendly persuasion on my part to convince my companions that the thrill
of summiting was worth clambering up the somewhat loose and exposed 3'd
class on the final pitches.
We spent a while on the summit, absorbing the snow streaked beauty of
the other Truchas Peaks and chatting with 3 climbers who amazingly
happened to be at that usually lonely spot. Mike had been worried about
the down climb, but in spite of his worn out, toeless old road shoes he
managed just fine and we were soon groping down our even snowier and
steeper descent coulour to San Leonardo Lakes. A darker, more forboding
spot I've never seen in Mew Mexico. The Lake is ringed by an ampitheatre
of avalanche chutes that have dumped twisted silver logs to jut out of
the still black waters of the lake. Not really the place to camp, if you
ask me.
The Leonardo trail has not been maintained in recent years, so it's
mostly cross country at the top, but on the lower section we ran in to a
party of hikers who had been joined by a friendly hound wearing a radio
collar. The hound had the name Torrez and the address Cordova NM on his
collar. I told Mark it had to be a relative of Local national class
mountain runner Leo Torrez. Sure enough, a few switchbacks later we met
up with the owner, out tracking a bear and holding what looked like a
miniature tv antenna. He was Leo's cousin.
When we got down to the smooth and easy part of the trail 'Ol
Backwards did his Jackrabbit metamorphosis and went sprinting off down
the jeep road. Mike gallantly stayed with me and we took the very over
and undergrown and almost un-findable trail section, surprising Ol'
Jackrabbit Dorion by arriving at the finish just a few minutes after
him.
Jennifer and Ariel were waiting in cozy comfort for us, Jennifer
having learned from her recent experience waiting at Santa Barbara til
almost dark for the last runner.
So now we have new records for both the "standard" and "enhanced"
versions of the (new name) Truchas Peak run, as follows:
Standard 15m + -
Jennifer Leon 36 and Ariel 3? 4:36 Womens open and Female
Canine
Matt Heavner 31 and Kita 5 4:36 Mens open and Male Canine

Enhanced-including N Truchas Pk 17.1 m (according to OBJ Dorion)-----

OBJ Dorion (to old to count) mens open and master 5:51:51

I have scheduled the Crestone100 miler for July 26. I changed the course to
a quadruple out and back to get rid of 6 miles of flat road on the old loop
course. It is all off-road now with 68,000 ft. of climb and a 100 hour
cutoff. I updated the web page at http://mattmahoney.net/crestone/ with new
maps and course directions. Let me know if you're interested. Sorry if you

Dear Matt,

it sounds terrific and I expect, that there will NOBODY out there trying
100 hours 100 miler.
And you? What about a worldwide promotion of that race, maybe you find
one or two more climbers for that from all over the world.

I am really interested as a part of my 54-project at least to climb all
of them once on July 26th. I guess for the CRESTONES 100 miles I am too
weak and too old.

Mid-July Hardrock, 7th of August Nolan, around 15th of August Leadville
and in summer the rest of about 40 14000er. I am still interested, to
climb the more difficult ones of the Elk (Aspen) region and elsewhere
with an experienced climber, maybe together with you. I will bring all
my climbing stuff over to the states next week, staying overseas until
mid October 2003.
All the best to all of you

I suspect so. I really don't think anyone will even finish the first
lap both ways, but I'm going to be out there as long as there are other
runners on the course. I read Steve Bremner's trip reports at
http://cloud.prohosting.com/~mtnclmbr/kc2.htm and he doesn't think 100
hours is possible either, but 25 hours for one lap should be doable
with enough training and motivation. His times are a bit faster than
mine. Last year it was 10 hours to climb Challenger and Kit Carson
from Willow Creek and return, and 14 hours for the Crestone traverse
from Cottonwood Creek. The trail is really bad and you are just
bushwacking. It took us both the same time to descend as climb it.
Good thing we will be avoiding it during the race.

Well, it's on the world wide web :-)

That's a much more sensible schedule :-) I didn't enter Hardrock last
year before they cancelled it so I'm not even on the waiting list. I
am trying to put together a no fee, aid, awards, or wimps version of
Hardrock one week after the real race like you did last year. I'm
going to enter Nolans but if I end up not getting a crew I might crew
for someone else instead. I'm going to enter Leadville but not the
bike this year since it's on the same weekend as Nolans.

I have about 20 more to go. In the Elks I still need Pyramid,
Snowmass, and Castle/Conundrum. I also need most of the San Juans (all
except Handies and Sneffels), and a few others (Little Bear, Lindsey,
Humboldt (yeah I should do this one before Crestone, but it's not a
hard climb). I won't get all the 14ers this year, at least not
Culebra.

I'm thinking about a race in the Elks in 2004. It would go Capitol,
Snowmass, Maroon, North Maroon, Pyramid, Conundrum, and Castle. I've
heard it's been done in about 36 hours. Next year I just want to
explore some routes.

I doubt he'll list it. If it doesn't have aid stations, entry fees, or
a reasonable chance of finishing, then it's not a "real" race. He
won't list Barkley or Nolan's 14 (although Nolan's is less than 100
miles depending on the route. It is 56 miles if you take straight
lines between summits).

There has been talk about a NM 100 (even a 50) off and on for as long
as I've been here. Sooner or later we may get serious.

Actually, there's no class 5 unless you're lost. However I'll consider
making the Prow and Ellingwood's Arete part of the course if there's
enough interest :-)

Anyway I expect the turnout to be small, at least this year. Most big
races started out this way. Western States had just 1 runner the first
year because nobody thought it could be done. I'd enter now before
there's a lottery :-)

> Maybe it is time for a really hard (20,000' climb?)

Good. Put one on. I'll run it.

BTW, I should mention that when I called the race the "Crestone
marathon and 100 mile fun run", I meant that while you are running 100
miles on the X axis, you are running a marathon on the Y axis. 68,000
feet of climb = 13 miles. 68,000 feet of descent = 13 miles. By
similar reasoning, we would have the "Leadville 10K" and "Hardrock Half
Marathon".

Dale,
Please take me out of the entry pool for the 2003 Hardrock Hundred. I have
accepted a job in Tampa, Fla., and am going to substitute swimming in the
Gulf of Mexico, triathlons, golf and tennis for running and hiking up
mountains.
I would like whatever money would normally be refunded to me to be divided
like this:
1. Take your wife to the nicest dinner you can. My way of saying thanks to
her for letting you do your important duties as race director. And my way of
saying thanks to you.
2. Buy yourself a pair of shoes that you really like.
3. If any money is left over, please put it in Joel's scholarship fund.
Thanks for three chances at your once-in-a-lifetime event. I really don't
see myself running it again.
It kicks ass to be me.

That wasn't meant for everyone!!!!
I thought I was sending it just to Dale.
Guess it was my turn to be the dork who sent everyone a personal email.

Hey Todd,

It's okay!

I'm certainly willing to forgive ya... :-)

...just as long as you and yours NEVER book rooms at the
Wyman Hotel.

In Florida, as I'm sure you'll discover, cancelling a
reservation does not mean that the innkeepers steal what
they think you owe for the rest of your stay.

Oops.
Now I guess it's my turn to be sorry; I'm really meaning
this for the entire list, and not just you personally, Todd.

But thanks, BTW, for what you're doing for Dale and, by your
withdrawal, for somebody else on *that* waiting list.

Have a great new life in Florida!
(But try to resist advice from Mahoney! :-)

Thought some of you may be interested in seeing how we here in the east
train for Hardrock. As you all know, training for this run is a year round
venture and we're always thinking of Hardrock no matter what we are doing.
Like...How will this help us in July. Well, we're both on the wait list and
always hopeful so will continually seeking the perfect training run for that
day in July.

What: Mt. Washington hike up/sled down. over 6,000 feet. Temps were in the
20's. Wind chill? Who knows. It was darn cold.

One of Sue Johnston's hiking friends (only now he's an ultrarunner too) has
been doing a Mt. Washington hike the Saturday after Thanksgiving for about
20 years now. We've done it a couple of times, and now that we're closer,
hope to make it every year. It sure beats Christmas shopping! This year,
the gang carried sleds up, and hit the auto road for a wild ride down. Note:
there are no guard rails on the auto road. Watch for turns, and be sure you
make them!
This was a heck of alot of fun. The hiking was superb, and conditions were
actually quite good. Near the summit, it was close to white-out conditions,
but we did see some sunshine during the day. Spectacular.

There had been an avalanche that killed two climbers and injured 5 others
the day before on Tuckerman's Ravine, where folks do the extreme skiing.
You will see Tuck's Ravine in the pictures, but we went up the trail for a
short while, then hooked onto Lion's Head toward the summit.
These pics might give you a feel for winter hiking in the whites.

Steve and I had not done the sledding part before, and, rookies that we
were, brought inflatable tubes (complete with hand pump- you should've seen
the looks on the faces of some German hikers who, like us, holed up behind
the summit building up top when we got them out of our packs!) . The tubes
provided a very soft cushioned ride - but unfortunately, the hard ice at the
beginning did some damage, and before we made it down all the way, our tubes
were flat! We had to finish by running down (in hiking boots no less.!)

We don't know everyone's name in the group, so not everyone is identified,
but check out the link if you would like to see the photos.

Hello All,

I hope everyone's well, fit, and prepared for the annual carbo loading
exercise next week.

Here's the first Hardrock snow report for weather year 2003. As you may
know, Silverton snowfall started off like gangbusters. That's the good
news. The bad news is that most of the snow fell well before Thanksgiving
and there has been almost no snow since mid November. Estimated snowpacks
by early December are about 90% normal. Stay tuned.

Dale and Marybeth,

Thanks for the message, and thanks for all of your hard work on the HR
100. We are at our place in Glen Haven, CO, for the holidays, and
there's hardly any snow. Even at 14,000' there's just scattered old
snow. I'm glad the San Juans have gotten some white stuff.

See you in July!

Hello All,

Happy New Year. I hope everyone is well and enjoying the winter.

I'm publishing the MTN RNR Trail Run schedule, today. We have 32 runs this
year. I believe the MTN RNR trail runs provide excellent training for
Hardrock. So, if you want me to send you an electronic schedule (pdf),
please contact me off line.

Finally, here it is; another snow report. Despite roughly average
snowfall, SNOTEL sites indicate snow water content across the San Juans is
about 85% of normal.

Hi Dale,

I have been meaning to write you to ask about the costs for HR2002 that you
weren't able to recover. Liz and I would like to pay our share of them in
addition to last year's entry. Also, I assume you are not buying a
HR-in-Training t-shirt this year since we never got full use out of our last
one. But if you are, please save a few bucks and don't get Liz and I one.

I am sending this to the HR list assuming there are others who feel like we do.
That way we can each do whatever our conscious and/or wallets allow.

I hope you are having a better winter than us. This has been the poorest one on
record. We have about as much snow as you had last year. We finally got ten
inches or so last week and woke up three days later to 40 degrees and a pounding
rain! Oh well, lots of running and not much snowshoeing I guess.

Hi Liz and Tom, (and the rest of the Hardrock list)
Thank you so much for the concern and thoughts. We were able to roll
most of the costs from 2002 to 2003 without a lot of hassle. You are right,
we won't be printing in-training shirts for 2003 so we hope you can get some
use out of the 2002 shirts.
We look forward to seeing a lot of you in July. The San Juans are looking a
bit short of snow but according to our snow guru, Charlie thorn, we are
still above where we were last year.

Steve,

The Cusick's (Grouse aid station) actually made a ton of food, including
breakfast burritos in prepartion for HR2002. In the end they cleaned out
their freezer and took all of it down to the local homeless shelter! Its
an ill wind that doesn't blow someone some good....

caused more than normal snow melt. The San Juan area is at about 62% of

So how come you're at home sending out snow reports while we're down in
Socorro thinking your rapidly chilling body is lying somewhere up in the
San Mateo Mtns.? Although I do want to support the mountain lions and
coyotes in that area.

Below is the snow report for Silverton as of Feburary 1, 2003. This
year
has been very dry, as you can tell. Furthermore, a very warm January
caused more than normal snow melt. The San Juan area is at about 62% of
normal snowfall for this time of year.
