To those interested: I rec'd a new right medial meniscus (from some 18yr.
old cadaver) and an articular cartilege paste graft on the bottom of the
right femur that was worn to the bone on 10/17. Still on crutches with no
weight bearing until at least next Monday when I return to the Stone Clinic
and find out if maybe it may be successful but I'm the oldest person by far
to have this procedure and that greatly limits the chance of success. I'll
be glad to answer questions from interested people. Much info can be gotten
from www.stoneclinic.com with some similar cases. Carl

Before the rumors start, I'd like to let everyone know the status of
the 2001 Hardrock.
Mr. Mahoney is right, we have reached our entry limit as set by the
Bureau of Land Management and the Hardrock Run committee. If you are
still interested in applying and haven't done so, we are still accepting
entries for the waiting list.
Due to the number of entries received in such a short period of time,
we are hoping to notify everyone within a week or so, (possibly before
we know if it's Gore or Bush)! So please, be patient and we'll get the
entries processed and everybody notified as quickly as possible.

(X-posted to the Hardrock mailing list).

I also think it would be more convenient to do Nolan's
14 2-3 weeks after Hardrock (assuming I'm in. I sent
in my entry Nov. 2). With 5 weeks between races, I'd
have to return to Florida and then re-acclimate to the
altitude like I did last year.

Anyone else planning on doing Nolan's 14 next year?

Hello All,

Below is a quick analysis of the 2001 Hardrock entrants based on the
November 30, 2000 entrant list that is posted on the www. As any high
school graduate can clearly see, Team Texas can not even field a team for
2001. No recounts will be allowed.

Below, whether you asked for it or not, is the first 2001 Hardrock snow
report. Snow water content in the San Juan Mountain stations is running
well above 100% normal with values as high as 187% normal. I'm sure these
figures compare favorably with the Florida recount numbers.

Dana Rouche, commenting on a post from Matt Mahoney said,

".....There is no mystery here, if you want to do well at Hardrock or
Nolan's 14, then mimic the race in training like you would do with any
other race. In the case of these two races, high altitude hiking will
serve you well because that is exactly what you will be doing on race day."

I agree there is no mystery about training for Hardrock. That (and the
free slave labor toting all the course markers) is why we encourage
Hardrock runners to participate in the course marking during the two weeks
before the run. Talented, well trained, sea level runners have and will
continue to finish Hardrock. (Many of the same have and will end their
attempt very early.) Folks like Dave Horton cannot go as slow as the
course markers but still spend many hours per day at altitude, running and
climbing at the expected run intensity. For them and us mortals, a couple
of weeks of walking on the course for 8-10 hours per day will greatly
inprove our chances for enjoying the finish. And that is exactly the
strategy Team NM will use to collect from Team TX. Pizza is required,
socks are optional.

I am beginning to think about lodging for the race. I am a
cheapskate, but not too fond of camping, so I'd like to share indoor
space with other runners. I would be happiest if the accomodations
included kitchen "priveleges" of any sort. I am currently planning
on being in town for 3 weeks prior to the race.

Please reply to me at alf@... if you are interested in sharing
accomodations.

Thanks.

Below is the Hardrock snow situation as of January 1, 2001. After
Christmas there has been very little snow in the San Juans and relatively
warm, sunny skies. I went up to Silverton on January 6-7 and found the
steep south facing slopes are pretty much clear of snow to tree line. The
snow gauge on Coal Bank Hill showed 2.5 feet of snow. The water content of
the snowpack across the San Juan Mountains of Colorado is reported to be
from 102% to 81% of normal.

I created a mailing list for Nolan's 14. Right now it is mostly people who
are running or organizing the event next summer. If you are interested, see
http://mmahoney.teejay.net/nolans/ for instructions on subscribing. The
event is full, but you might be interested in the training hike/runs for the
2002 event. Perhaps someone can break the 5:20 course record in the Mt.
Yale half marathon, or 8 hours in the Grouse Canyon-Mt. Princeton 7 miler.

With a little more than four months left before race weekend I thought I'd
take the opportunity to offer my book, Hardrock Fever. Running 100 Miles in
Colorado's San Juan Mountains, to anyone who hasn't read it. The book is a
narrative of my experience at the 1999 race which was run in the same
direction as this year's event. It's 180 pages long and includes an
elevation profile, all-time finishers list and a dozen photos (not all of
me). Cost of the book is $12.95 plus $1.50 shipping and handling for a
total of $14.45. You can order directly from me -- make your check out to
Bob Boeder and mail it to 2013 Mango Circle, Fayetteville, NC, 28304; or you
can order it on the internet at www.oldmp.com/hardrock100/. See you all in

Hi again.

I have been trying to contact Claudia, with no luck so far. Left a few
messages, but no callback yet (I even left a toll-free number).

So, I'm starting to feel a little panicked here. I'm interested in sharing
lodging for the 2 weeks before the race, and I'm realizing that "Hey, its
March already". If anyone would like to join forces with me in the quest
for non-tent lodging, I'm all for it. I'd like to not go more than $40-50 a
night, and the less the better. If you've already got a place, and there is
extra floor space, I can further contribute to whatever you are already
paying for rent.

Thanks much!

Hi! I just recently joined this group and I figured I would say hello and
get myself acquainted with all the happenings. I will be attempting HR for
my 2nd time in 2001. Last year I paced a friend for 40 miles.
Durango/Silverton has much snow this year and the course is sure to look a
lot different than it did last year after such a dry winter. Looking forward
to seeing you all in only four months!

Well, you asked for it so here it is - the latest Hardrock Hundred snow
report. I still have no official update after early January on the water
content of the snow in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. I believe it's
close to normal. John Cappis reported 5.5 feet of snow at the gauge on
Coal Bank Hill, south of Silverton, on March 4, 2001.

Also, I understand there is still no snow on the Wickham Park course in
Florida.

I'm looking forward to getting up to the high country for some running.

I wanted to send this message out to everyone because over the weekend the membership for this discussion list has been updated to include all 2001 run entrants.

If you do not want to be on the list, you can email me directly and I will remove you, or you can send an email to

hr100-unsubscribe@eGroups.com

There are about 10 entrants who are not on this list because they either do not have email, or the email address listed in the entrant list did not work.  If you know someone in the race who is not on the list and wants to be, have them email me or Stan Jensen.

Thanks!  :-)

See you all in July.
