Hi Hardrockers,

For anyone who might be in the Estes Park area August 18:

Sylvia and I hold an annual party for our climbing and running friends,
at our summer home in Glen Haven, Colorado. It's always the Friday
before the Pikes Peak Marathon (coincidentally, just before our classes
begin at the University of Nebraska). This year's party will be Friday,
August 18.

Typically, people start gathering about 6 PM, after climbing, hiking,
whatever. It's sort of potluck style, though there's always too much
food. So come by anyway, even if you don't have a dish to share. We'll
provide beer and soft drinks, as well as something to eat. You're
welcome to stay over (a sleeping bag might be useful). You're welcome
also to come a day early, in order to take part in various climbing and
hiking activities on Friday.

Here's how to get here: First get to Glen Haven somehow. It's 7 miles
northeast of Estes Park. Also, it's 8 miles northwest of Drake. Go
northwest on a gravel road at the General Store. After about 1/7 mile
take the left branch (FOX CREEK, not North Fork). About 1/2 mile from
the General Store take a sharp right up Hummingbird Hill Road. Ours is
the first driveway on the left (55 Hummingbird Hill Road)..

Our phone number is (970) 586-2539.

We hope to see you!

Roger, Sylvia, and Andrea Wiegand

Sounds great Roger. Sorry I can't make it. Finally got what appears to be a
correct diagnosis of my knee. The orthopedic Dr. that did the surgery on the
medial meniscus cartilege in my right knee took off so much cartilege there
is not enough left to keep the tibia from grinding against the femur. I
suspect he knew it before this but did not want to admit it. Told me don't
run. Bike, swim, or walk if it dosen't hurt, so guess I am a gimp for the
rest of my life. Hardrock will be the only 100 I'll come back to to clear
trails and help so I'll see you and Sylvia there next year. This will let
Dale, Charlie, John, etc. know also. Carl

I'm back in Colorado for Nolan's 14 on Aug. 12-14
(flew in today) but I already have plans to fly back
to Florida on Aug. 16 unfortunately. However, y'all
are invited to some training runs on Aug. 1, 2, 5, and
6 in the Sawatch range. See
http://mmahoney.teejay.net/nolans/ Let me know if
you're interested in any runs Aug. 7-11 and we can
arrange something. I'm also interested in climbing
Princeton from the south, and Tabeguache from both sides.

CARL YATES:
Ultraman with Ultraguts
And a Great Big Heart

Let me tell you how good Carl Yates looks in MY jacket.
(!!!)

[Guess I'd better explain this one.]

First of all Carl has a wonderful wife and beautiful
daughter. Secondly, they were all there at Hardrock this
year. Only thing was, of course, Carl couldn't run because
of his knee which he's explained elsewhere. (Like, here.
Like, yesterday.) So what Carl did instead was stay awake
most of the time and drive around all over the course and
lend a hand anywhere he could and cheer on anyone who needed
it. Or, he'd drive one place and his wife and daughter
would drive another, or he and his wife, or he and his
daughter, or, heck, I don't know how many different
mathematical combinations they all did to help people out.

But the point is, they were the ones who drove my wife all
over the place because she was VERY intimidated by the roads
and terrain to tackle any trips herself. They thus
performed an outstanding service, of which my wife was the
direct beneficiary and due to which I was undoubtedly
encouraged to make it as far as I did. Carl and his family
therefore have our undying gratitude.

So, at one point, I lightened my load by emptying stuff out
of my pack--giving it all to my wife at Grouse Gulch. Next
thing I know (right, like how 'bout six or eight hours
later?) I'm coming into the Ouray aid station and there I
see a man wearing my jacket! (I was so delirious, I had no
clue. I just thought maybe the man shopped at the same
store I did, or something.) And actually it was my jacket
because it was Carl and he was driving the family and my
wife to Ouray and he had simply forgotten his, so my wife
let him use mine. And I had NO CLUE what was going on and
didn't figure this one out until at least a day later when
it was finally explained to me in great painstaking detail.

Damn, but he sure looked good in my jacket! And if I
thought it could possibly have the remotest chance of
cheering him up, I'd gladly give it back to him to keep.

But now you read yesterday's post. And tell me this
first-class ultraman hasn't already cheered himself up, eh?
He's coming back next year again to help out!

Now let me observe one more thing. Maybe Carl won't be able
to run Hardrock anymore (of course he and his family will
still be there cheering) but you know what? He has given me
and about umpteen thousand other wannabe Hardrockers
something of a Herculean example to strive for:

Carl has finished Hardrock. I haven't.

(Maybe, now that I think about it, Carl should give me HIS
jacket to cheer ME up!!! :-)

TheTroubadour@...

[Personal note to Carl: You're not alone, my friend. I
know several other heroes of mine who have been knocked out
of further SEVERE runs like this by their doctors' orders.
It can happen to any of us at any time. A year ago or so I
met a SUPER runner here locally who now wants to marry one
of the young female athletes that I helped train to run her
first marathon. We're talking people who are just barely in
their 30's. This year the guy is knocked out of competing
permanently. He's been diagnosed with arthritis!]

[Thankfully though, last I heard, the marriage is still
going forward. But of course the bride-to-be is S.O.L.
She's too fast now to go back to running with me!]

Hey Rich,

I met Carl Yates quite by fate, but I think he had it planned. It was about
11:30 pm on Sat. night and Rick Hamilton and I were halfway along the Kamm
Traverse. Rick was dutifully pacing me through a steady drizzle when we
stumbled across Carl sitting on a narrow corner of the Traverse, shining his
flashlight uopn us. He wanted to make sure that my pacer and I were OK and
finding our way across the slimey, foggy narrow trail down to KT aid
Station. He was clad in a big rain poncho. He took me quite by suprize but
Rick just looked up and casually said, "Oh, hello there, Carl."

Wish I could have stopped and talked with this HR 100 ledgend longer but I
had to finish Hardrock!

Thanks Carl!

Hi Sylvia and Roger,

Thanks for the invitation to the 8/18 party. I am not sure if Gerry and I can
make it. This August is very busy for us as we are working diligently on the
High Thirteener climbing guide. The manuscript must be handed in by mid-Oct.
Most likely we will be down in the San Juans at the 18th.

Could you please send me your mailing address? I have a photo to send you
which Gerry took. Haven't decided in either "yea" or "nay" about HR2001. I
have until Nov. 1, however, so no rush.

Great meeting you both!

Hi Jennifer,

Our mailing address here is P.O. Box 132, Glen Haven, CO 80532. After August 18
we'll be back in Lincoln: 2400 Sheridan, Lincoln, NE 68502. Good luck meeting
the book deadline, and if you get a reprieve we'd love to see you on the 18th.

After pretty much deciding to give HR2001 a miss, I'm now leaning toward
entering
again. After all, it will be the easier direction.

So, is HR 2001 REALLY easier on the downhills or the "easier way?'

I'd sure love to know a few opinions on this one.

Yes (IMHO). I did it both ways and in the clockwise
direction you get more downhill roads and uphill
trail. I was a few minutes faster this year only
because there was less snow.

I did the CW direction last year and the CCW direction this year. I think
the CW direction is a little easier in that you have less hand over fist
climbing. Also, the downhills are probably overall a little more runnable in
the CW direction. However, as stated so often, this is an extremely
challenging course. "Easier" is relative. I don't think your chances for
finishing are significantly different in the two directions for most people.

I'm surprised this list hasn't been closed yet. I have finished the run
both ways plus an additional 90 mile tour in the counterclockwise
direction. As Charlie Thorn would say, both ways are just as easy.
Seriously, I think there are advantages and disadvantages to both ways in
terms of difficulty. I am just glad that the direction is switched every
year because it really does feel a lot different going one way over the
other and makes the event that much bigger. In order to truly complete
Hardrock, you have to do it both ways, right?

I would have to agree with most that the CCW direction at least feels more
difficult. Not only do you have more opportunity to be using all four
limbs on the climbs but it seems that after many of the climbs the descents
are such that you don't get much of a break because they are often too
rugged to have an easy, restful run downhill.

I do have a preference though, I like the CCW direction. Since Ouray is a
major stop, I like to have 7 climbs behind me when I reach it, as opposed
to in front of me. The views are spectacular in all directions but I like
looking in the CCW direction for some reason and the whole sequence of
events better. This is in spite of having my first and only DNF while
traveling in this direction.

I will have to admit, in a high snow year, going clockwise is a hoot. You
have the steep descents that are fill with snow so that you can do some
high speed traveling on your butt. Since it was so dry this year, maybe we
will have some snow next year to add to the fun.

Texans try to get stuck trucks off mountain
SILVERTON It may be the highest-ever case of illegal parking.
With lightning rattling the steep mountainside, two Texans tried for a fifth day
Friday to
dislodge their vehicles from a 12,000-foot perch on Houghton Mountain, about 200
miles
southwest of Denver.
Alan Hatcher of Dallas, his 13-year-old daughter, Kyle, and his brother, Gary,
of Bryan
drove the Dodge Ram and the Jeep Wrangler up the mountain into steep country
containing a
fragile ecosystem, where they couldn’t turn back.
They abandoned the vehicles, hiked to a nearby ghost town and eventually hitched
a ride to
Silverton.
Since then, their main task has been rescuing the two vehicles, about 500 feet
above the
road on a 70 percent grade.
They have tried a tow truck and even considered a helicopter, but officials with
New Air
Helicopters say the vehicles weigh too much to be removed by air.
“We’re not really stupid people. It was a momentary lapse of judgment that got
us to where
we’re at,” said Alan Hatcher, a math teacher. Gary Hatcher added, “This was
really
stupidity.”
With Bureau of Land Management officials pressuring them to remove the vehicles
from the
fragile habitat, the Hatchers on Friday headed back up the mountain with a winch
and some
posts to secure it into the mountainside, hoping to pull the vehicles free, said
Melody
Skinner, a San Juan County sheriff’s dispatcher.
“They’ll be lucky if they get one out today,” Skinner said.
“If you live around here you know that sometimes it’s best just to get out and
walk.”
The Hatchers’ plight has provided entertainment for this former mining town,
whose
residents have been driving up the mountain within viewing distance of the
spectacle.
The temptation to make fun of the Texans is tempered by the fact that Silverton
residents
know what it is like to be stuck. During the winter they can spend weeks at a
time with no
way out of town if U.S. 550 is closed by avalanches.
“We’ve had nothing but good luck, help and kindness since we hiked off that
mountain,”
said Alan Hatcher.
BLM law enforcement officer Lanny Wanger has ticketed the men for driving
vehicles off the
road and damaging the tundra. He said BLM crews will remove the vehicles and
bill the two
men if their efforts are unsuccessful.
“Whatever they do, it’s going to cost them at least $1,000,”
Wagner said.

(These stories both set up easy one-liners about Texans, but, since they all
kicked my
butt at Hardrock, I will remain silent.) Todd
SILVERTON, Colo. — Two passenger trucks have been freed from their mountainside
perch,
ending a six-day ordeal for two Texans whose predicament brought smirks and
little
sympathy from locals.
The Dodge Ram and Jeep Wrangler were dragged, nudged and driven to safety from a
shelf
above a steep 800-foot slope Saturday in what one man who helped remove the
vehicles
called an “extremely dangerous” five-hour operation.
Two all-terrain vehicles pulled the trucks off unstable ground.
“If one of them were to slip and fall off the side, it would pull the other
off,” said
John Gilleland, whose Hummer helped extricate the trucks. “I can’t imagine
anyone
surviving a roll that far down a slope.”
The not-so-excellent adventure began Aug. 31, when brothers Alan Hatcher, of
Dallas, and
Gary Hatcher, of Bryan, Texas, drove their vehicles into steep country and they
couldn’t
turn back. Alan Hatcher’s 13-year-old daughter, Kyle, was with them.
“They went down slopes they were not able to get back up, so they committed
themselves to
keep going farther down as they searched for a way out,” said Gilleland. “They
should have
stopped after they made their first poor judgment.”
All week, the brothers hatched plans to remove the vehicles from their perch
some 12,500
feet above sea level. In Silverton, an isolated former mining town of 500 about
an hour’s
drive away, they became the subject of remarks ranging from mild reproach to
ridicule.
“I don’t feel sorry for them. If they fine them, I think that’s OK,” said Glen
Wiebe, a
backcountry tour driver in Silverton, about 200 miles southwest of Denver. Wiebe
said the
Texans were jokingly called “Bubba One” and “Bubba Two.”
Some residents drove up Houghton Mountain to gawk at the spectacle. Gilleland
said dozens
of onlookers came to watch the salvage effort.
The Bureau of Land Management has ticketed the men for driving off the road and
harming
the fragile alpine tundra environment, which a sign nearby says can take 100
years to heal
when damaged.
The Texans drove off a two-track trail — part of a looping system of rough roads
that draw
four-wheeler enthusiasts to the San Juan Mountains — and followed a single-track
rut.
Wiebe said other roads would have given them the same views.
“We fight wilderness designations here tooth and nail, and this just gives
environmentalists more ammunition,” Wiebe said Sunday.

Mr. Yates:

Thank you for the information. I wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see
you back in fine form next year. You have provided us young kids extremely
high benchmarks to match as we get older. For example, your back-to-back
finishes of Western States and Hardrock at the age of 66. Take care.

Mitchell Rossman
Mendota Heights, MN

P.S. Please forgive my formal address but since you are my Dad's age, I
cannot address you as "Carl".

   Dear Carl:
By way of introduction, a long time running friend, Mike Price, who lives in Utah, emailed me a message wherein you corresponded with one Jim Ballard relative to your condition and the Stone Clinic.  You mentioned the fact that you may be the oldest person to receive this implant.

As a 25 year ultra runner, I was recently diagnosed as having no cartilage left in my right knee and with the onset of arthritis (I've had three surgeries on the knee and was ready for the fourth, when the orthopedist told me to forget it and take up biking).  I am 62 and really did not want to stop running at this young age.  Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Sincerely
        Jack Sheridan

Dear Jack, You can get an awful lot of info from the Stone Clinic website www.stoneclinic.com. I'll keep the HR 100 website apprized of anything worthwhile. Roger Wiegand's brother in law had both knees done. I guess it was the articular cartilage paste graft and was successful. I will be getting a 'new' rt. medial meniscus from a 20yr. old cadaver along with an articular cartilage paste graft on the bottom of my femur (nickle size spot that is worn to the bone). My operation is 10/17, will cost about 12000 and since this clinic has opted out of medicare I get no coverage there but apparently the hospital costs are covered by medicare. I am lucky in that my secondary insurer has said they will cover 70%. The clinic wants half up front when surgery is scheduled, remainder at 30 & 60 days. Kevin Stone MD is the orthopaedic physician for the US Ski Team and is or was for a number of other sport or dance organizations so comes with a pretty good background and has been doing these since 1992 so not experimental. It means 4 wks. on crutches and a lot more rehab that is on his website. I wont know if it is successful for a month or so but a lot depends on following the rehab procedures. I'll let you know. Carl

Matt has a great idea fully supported by scientific research. I've
extrapolated his time to Hardrock and have determined that Hardrock is
doable in 12 minutes, flat. The flat part might be the problem. Well,
maybe a few of the sharp turns, too.

Subject: Questions about Runners World diet

I have some questions about the diet in the latest issue of Joggers World...
er... Runners World, "45 ways to lose 5 pounds".

1. If I try all 45 ways, will I lose 225 pounds?

2. I heard that each pound adds a minute to your marathon time. 225
minutes is 3:45. Last year I ran a 3:48. Will I be able to run a 3 minute
marathon?

3. Can anyone recommend a marathon course without a lot of sharp turns?
I'm worried about running off the road at 500 MPH.

4. I only weigh 160 now. Does this mean my weight will become negative and
I will float off into space? Has anyone tried those weight belts that scuba
divers wear?

Thanks in advance.

Not really. When I come to the climbs I'll just
remove my weight belt :-)

Gordon is probably right about using mountain lions versus domestic cats,
It would take care of the problem I was worrying about : Dog pacers,
consuming the cat pacers. But of course we probably wouldn't have any of the
dog pacers around for long, and it'd probably take care of those pesky
human pacers too. As a matter of fact it would help the race managment a
lot, taking care of the trashed and burned out shells of "runners"
littering the course, especially after Handies. There would be no
stragglers or over the limit finishers !
