Fellow Hardrockers,

It's Snowing in Silverton...again!

If I didn't know better, I'd say it was still winter, not spring. We
currently have snow falling, again, and it's absolutely beautiful!

In the last week, I've been out three times and all three times, I've
encountered a snow storm while hiking. Just yesterday, I went up Grant Swamp
and if it wasn't for the fact that I brought crampons and an ice ax, I would
have had to turn back. It was nothing but a sheet of ice from tree line, all
the way to the top of the pass. On the other side of the pass, if I hadn't
known where to look, I wouldn't have even known that Island Lake existed.
There's still lots of snow out there but I'm sure it'll all be gone in a few
weeks...that is, if it ever stops snowing! ;-)

Little Giant still has a cornice at the top, but a group of three made it
over just fine a few days ago.

Green Mountain is easy to navigate all the way up to Buffalo Boy Ridge. As
usual, there's still a cornice on the ridge, but not a problem to get around

Cinnamon Pass is open

Handies looks really good but you still need snowshoes or crampons going
through American Basin, depending on the temperature

Engineers is good all of the way to the top and down into Oauray

I've been told that Camp Bird road is good all of the way up to Governors
Basin but there's still a ton of snow on Virginius

Looking up at Oscars, there's still a lot of snow on the upper switchbacks

As I mentioned earlier, Grant Swamp still has a lot of snow and ice but it
doesn't seem to be very deep

I haven't been over Putman, yet, but Jamil and I will be doing that soon and
while we're at it, will put a rope across Mineral Creek.

Hardrockers, Don Moden sent this update on the Hardrock course last Saturday.

Charlie
==================
Okay, Hardrock. Another Hardrocker and I did another long session on the
course Saturday. The plan was to depart the Ouray Hot Spring Pool and run
the course to Silverton. Not!

1) The course is completely clear of snow up to the left turn on Camp Bird
where the road splits to Governor & Yankee Boy.

2) Shortly thereafter the road takes a sharp left. From this point all the
way to the ridge before dropping into Humboldt Mine is snow covered. The
nice benefit is you can sneak along the edge most of the way.

3) From Humboldt Mine to the top of Virginius Pass is one huge snow field.
I wouldn't even attempt that without real crampons and axe. At this point
we turned around.

4) Not part of the course, we decided to get over to Telluride via Imogene
Pass Road. The plowing is currently two miles from the top. We made it to
within about 3/4 mile of the pass when the weather turned; it started to
snow and blow extremely hard.

5) We were forced back down to Ouray.

I know a number of you are coming to the area early to train. You might
consider bringing along some light weight equipment for snow travel if you
want to train the high sections of the course. We continue to have cloudy
days even in the morning with rain & snow.

I will be running the Sherman, Handies, Grouse, Engineer, Ouray section this
coming Sunday after San Juan Solstice. I will send another update, which
will have a comparison of Engineer from two weeks ago. That will be a good
indicator of how fast the snow is melting.
++++

Happy Training,
Don

Coming in early or here already, stop by Steam and Steel coffee shop and let
them know you are here and where you are staying if we need to get ahold of you.

And don't forget that mail to Silverton takes a bit longer so your best bet it
to mail it to yourself Genreal Delivery Silverton,CO 81433 or if you need to fed
ex or ups to physical address check with Lois or myself or the library and
Charlie should be here on the 27 so that is another physical address if you need
one. We seem to have a few slip ups every year with mail.

And it is not raining to day. And the snow is melting up high.

If I can help let me know

As of Saturday last, Bear Creek from Ouray all the way up to Engineer's is
possible with lots of post-holing above Yellow Jacket.
As of today (15th), Ouray to Governor's Basin aid-station compleatly clear.
From Governor's to Virginius Mine doable with no gear half of the way.  Above
tree-line Khatoola running spikes and yellow tent pegs makes for safe snow-field
traversing.  From Mine to just below the last snow-field to the Pass is doable.
Not doable without serious gear is the climb to the Pass.
The constant pm rains are accelerating rate of melt.  Will try to get to
Virginius Pass without any gear next week.
Course marking is rapidly getting closer!
Jean-Jacques

Hey Hardrockers,

I arrived in Silverton yesterday afternoon. After reading messages on
this list and hearing from the locals about very recent snowfall, I was
a little nervous about what I'd find when I hit the hills.

Here's what I experienced on Kendall Mountain this morning: the trail is
almost clear of snow and ice already. The first snowdrift was at about
12,400, and it's all melting away very fast. Much of the snow on the
mountains is rather brown with dirt on it, which increases the rate of
melt. Also the current forecast shows a pretty warm week shaping up,
which is likewise good news.

Admittedly, Kendall is pretty exposed. Virginius and Grant-Swamp may
not be ready for prime time for a little bit yet...

It's good to be back! And the coffee and ambiance at Steam & Steel is
every bit as good as I remembered. :-)

Seeya soon,

  - Fred

Cool, thanks Fred. I have to admit I was starting to hunt for some slip-on
crampons with all the snow talk. Not a big ticket item down here! I fly into
Durango late this Saturday, so warm the set and cool the tinnies. Cheers, Andy

In an effort to ensure not getting lost when pacing in the upcoming Hardrock, I
set off with my runner intent on covering some of the HR trail from American
Basin to the finish. Here's what we found between 6/11/09 and 6/17/09 (a period
of unsettled weather and plenty of new snow up high) on a hike from American
Basin-Chapman Aid Station in the direction of this year's (2009)HR. Following
the pictures is a brief narrative of trail conditions. Hope it's useful.

Looking S from Oscar's Pass towards Swamp Canyon 6/16/09. Quite a bit of
snow in upper Swamp Canyon.
AMERICAN BASIN-GROUSE GULCH

There's plenty of snow in American Basin. We carried ice axes and Kahtoola
running crampons throughout the hike -and used both. We were definitely at the
edge of the running crampons ability, and both would've preferred more
aggressive light mountaineering crampons. The Kahtoola's provided a more
sporting approach to some of the snow and ice we encountered, however.

American Grouse is easily doable w/running crampons or none at all if you're
confident on snow. On the Grouse Gulch side of the Pass there are a couple of
snowfields to cross that the crampons really help on. We used them on the high
snowfields below the Pass. The trail through the Gulch itself (once off the
Pass) to the aid station is open and clear.

GROUSE GULCH-ENGINEER (Oh Point Road)

Road is clear, high clearance 4X4's are driving over it.

ENGINEER-OURAY

There's snow up high coming off of Oh Point Road, but it was easily negotiated
without crampons/ice axe. Trail was clear to Ouray.

OURAY-VIRGINIUS PASS

As reported on this group earlier, the road was clear above the Governors Aid
Station site. We encountered snow above but were able to skirt it on the edge
of the trail. Then in the upper reaches of Governor Basin we found crampons and
ice axes necessary. Be sure to check out snow conditions as you go -my partner
pointed out "there's been an avalanche fatality in Colorado every month but
September." This was not a a confidence-inducing nugget of info as we reached
the snows below Virginius Pass and could see that recent snowfall had hardened
and formed a 6 inch wet slab layer (this was 6/13/09 and should be consolidated
by now, but assess for yourself if you head up there). Somewhat disconcerting
to discover a bit of instability in the last 30 feet below Kroger's Canteen.
The weather deteriorated at the top of the Pass, with heavy, wet snow falling
and visibility being reduced to feet. We descended the basin S of Virginius to
avoid newly snow loaded slopes on the traverse from Kroger's to the shoulder off
the south side of Mendota Peak and ended up bivvying far below the HR trail in
the protection of spruce while the storm raged. The next day we could see fresh
avalanche activity - the new snow that had fallen had ripped at where I estimate
the HR trail goes- they were sluff avalanches with a lot of loose rocks in them.
Glad we avoided it...

We walked into Telluride via the Imogene Pass road and then re-joined the HR
trail and headed up Cornet Creek towards Mendota Peak to check out the trail
from the Mendota shoulder to Telluride.

MENDOTA PEAK-TELLURIDE

Trail is in great shape. Some snow up high -the new snow that fell had
consolidated and was in fine cramponing shape. Snow is present on trail in
upper basin only, and can be easily avoided down low.

TELLURIDE-OSCAR'S PASS

Trail is pretty clear between T-ride and the split between trail 508 (Wasatch
Trail) and the East Fork trail. There are a couple of old avalanche paths that
have to be negotiated (5-10 steps in width) that we were able to clear w/o
crampons.

We started up the E. Fork of Bear Creek in the creek bed (covered in solid snow)
and were able to easily reach Wheelbarrow flats through intermittent snow.
Crampons were essential negotiating our way out of the Canyon and into the
flats. From Wheelbarrow Flats to the Wasatch Saddle is snow covered but easily
negotiated -we made quick work to the Wasatch Saddle.

From the Wasatch Saddle to Oscar's Pass there is one patch of snow to be
traversed. We wore crampons and cut a few steps across and stepped onto the
summit of Oscar's.

OSCAR'S PASS-CHAPMAN

There are two areas of the trail that are snow covered (as stated in the trail
description). The snow is deep- from a wind-loaded drainage/old avalanche path.
Both crossings of this snow field put our running crampons to the test and we
had to cut steps with our ice axes to safely negotiate them. After crossing
them it is smooth sailing down the HR trail to the Ophir Pass road/Chapman Gulch
aid station.

Gazing at the snow of Swamp Canyon and a nice family that pulled up in a jeep
offering us a ride to Silverton made the decision to head back to our car an
easy one.

I would also note that in the week we were on the trail there was quite a bit of
melting out there, despite little sun and lower temps, so the snow is going and
should be a lot better for race day.

Good luck finding a place to park/negotiating the madness that is the Telluride
Bluegrass Festival this weekend if you run out of Telluride. But hey, there's
always the music and beer!

See you out there-

I just read Ben Woodbeck's fine description of sections of the
Hardrock course that he's been on in the past few days. Ben's photos
really give the idea of what it's like out there. I had just talked
to Rick Hodges who has been in Silverton for a week or two running the
course. I'll add a few comments Rick provided:

1. Little Giant to Cunningham has the usual snow/ice field at the
traverse. It's melting and Rick had little trouble getting over it.
2. Cunninghan to Maggie is passable. There is the usual snowbank on
the divide above Buffalo Boy. It's serious now but melting.
3. Maggie to Pole Creek. No problem with a few snow fields. Melting fast.
4. Grouse to Burrows Park. Pretty much what Ben described in
American Basin. (Ben's photo tells a lot more that the proverbial 100
words.) Rick reported mostly continuous snow up from American Basin
past Sloan Lake to the switchbacks below Handies. Handies has the
snow cornice on the north side descent into Grizzly Gulch but Rick had
no trouble there. Rick thinks there will be snow left there on run
day. The trail is pretty much clear from the Handies Ridge down to
Burrows
5. Bear Creek to Putnam. Trail is open to tree line. There is a lot
of snow in upper Putnam but melting.

Based on Rick's and Ben's reports, I think we will have a pretty much
average snow year on the Hardrock course up high. The lower
elevations will probably be dryer than average.

Who else has been out?

Charlie

Hi Lyn and Eric,
Thanks for doing this. We are trying to create some things for runners to
do while in Silverton and this certainly helps! would you be interested in
hosting another event? I'm thinking of having Rick Trujillo (from Ouray,
mining engineer/runner)give a talk about some of the mines that the runners
will be running by. It would be in the evening. Let me know.
Attached is the most current list of runners and wait listed runners in case
you want to do a special or promotion with them.

Charlie,

Last week, I went from Maggie to Grouse and back to my truck at Maggie.
While going over Handies I ran into a snow storm and was knee deep in snow
on the final ascent up Grizzly Gulch and then, on the other side, actually
had to use my crampons to climb out of American Basin (because of how cold
it was), but like Rick already stated, it's melting fast and is already
ahead of what the conditions were like last year. The surprising thing
though, is that American Basin actually had more snow in it than was there
two weeks earlier. Down lower, towards Grouse, there was a lot less snow
than last year at this time. Once things warm up, it'll go fast.

Below is a trail condition update (June 22, 2009) from Don Moden who
seems determined to really enjoy the high country.
Charlie
=========
For the third weekend now I thought I would pass along my training
report and finally a POSITIVE one.

Mike Farris and I once again covered a solid section of the course.
Yesterday we parked at the Maggie Gulch bathrooms, hiked up the road
to
Maggie Aid, Pole, Sherman, Burrow's, Handies, Grouse, and back down
the road to the car. A reasonable 10:40 day with windy conditions,
but NO rain or snow.

1) Saturday once again showed the unpredictable weather in the San
Juan Mountains. The 94 dropped runners at San Juan Solstice 50 can
attest to that as the forecast called for 40% of thunderstorms and
instead it was a lasting snow storm on the divide.

2) The Hardrock course. Maggie to Pole was a great section. No snow
to speak of, but very muddy & wet. There was a huge Elk herd (1,000
head) in the upper basin and they have been using the trails. Along
with the slow melt this year the trail is pretty messy in spots.

3) Pole to Sherman. Oh my, can high alpine trail running get any
better! Beautiful trail the whole way.

4) Sherman to Burrows. Begged water off a passing car. They didn't
have any beer. :-)

5) Burrows to Handies. Perfect trail until near the top. Maybe 150
feet from the top there is a snow shoot that covers the trail. It is
a little
dicey to cross, and then straight up to the ridge as the trail is
under snow. With some blue bird days this might melt out. The last
pitch up the
rocky switchbacks to the summit has snow in them, but I am pretty sure
this will be gone. We ran into Bill Geist at the top with brother &
sister-in-law. Bill was doing an easy recovery hike after logging an
11:32 at San Juan the day before. Stud!

5) Handies to Grouse. Good trail down with a few glissades to where
the course splits off the American Basin trail. From here there are
extended
snow crossings, but none with adverse results if you slip. These
might melt out, but it will take nice weather until the race. What I
call Grouse Pass
is a solid snow field on the American Basin side for the last 50 - 75
yards, but we walked right up it. Nothing on our shoes. A couple
more glissades
on the Grouse Gulch side and clear trail to the road.

So, all in all this section of the course is going to be perfect for
the race. A group of us will be doing the Telluride to Silverton
section this
coming Saturday. Then it will be time to rest until the race. I hope
all is well with all of you and I look forward to meeting a few of you
in person
in July.

Cheers,
Don

Hi Hardrockers,
Mother Nature has turned on the heat and while she is working on the
course we have been working in other ways.
This is the first of what I hope will be many updates about what the
merchants of Silverton are doing for you. Stay tuned for updates as they
become available and please patronize the businesses that help us.
When you get to Silverton be sure to check in with:
Outdoor World- Mention you are part of Hardrock and they will give you 15% off
any purchase
Steam and Steel-Come in for their coffee card which allows you to receive free
cups of coffee after so many purchased. They also will be holding a movie
night for us on 7/7.
Silverton Brewery- Get you beer card to help replenish the carbs you'll be
losing out marking the course.

We are also proud to let you know that the Grand Imperial Hotel will hosting a
pre-run pasta meal on Thursday, 7/9 from 5 until 8 p.m. The proceeds from this
meal will go to the Joel Zucker Scholarship, which is the Hardrock's
scholarship to help high school students in our communities.

See you in the high country soon!!

I didn't get any takers on yesterday's excursion - those of you in the area must
be smarter than I am at predicting the weather... I made it up under Mendota
Peak before T-storms moved into the area and I holed up in what I think is
Smuggler's Mine. There was a little snow on the ground starting around 11,500 ft
or so, but melting and conditions were pretty good. I posted ome video on blog
if you want to see what it looked like under Mendota Pk -
http://weezyl.blogspot.com/2009/06/telluride-to-mendota-peak-excursion.html

I'd like to get out on the Ouray to Governor Basin section today. Planning an
afternoon start again. I'll be leaving Mountain Village via 4x4 around 1:00 and
driving to Ouray. Not sure how long the drive takes. Company welcome.

Charlie, that usual snowbank on Giant-Little Dives seemed rather impassable to
me. It is protruding out a fair way and I wasn't game to try it. Not sure if
Rick used any gear but as a flatlander I am impressed that he didn't find it an
obstacle.
There is way less snow than last year on the Little Giant side.

Left Ouray at 6:30am with pm storm warnings in mind, heading for Virginius.
At Sydney/Governor junction was passed by Dave Horton & friend who showed me the
short-cut over to upper Virginius Rd. that was under snow.  Without hesitation
Horton & friend strapped on crampons at the Virginius Mine dump and went
straight up the snow-field and disappeared over the Pass.  They were going to
Imogene following the ridges cross-country as directly as possible.  This was a
training hike for Dave who will be running the Colorado Trail south from Denver
starting July 4th.
The melting is accelerating, but I still don't dare the climb to the pass
without mountaineering gear.  Got back down to Governor aid-station site just as
the rain started.  Joe's comments are right on.
Until Saturday!
Jean-Jacques

[I know what I said last week, but this is in honor of all those fine folks

Ingelhook Wineries present...

REAL WOMEN OF GENIUS

{Real gals of geeeeeene-yuss}

Today we raise our glass to you, Madam "This Is My Mountain; You Need To Get
Off Now."

{Madam "WHAAAAAAAA tarya doin' uppeeeeeeeeere?"}

What our obscure little ultrarunning kingdom sees--not to mention humanity
itself--is a very clever means for marking unclear trails, for safety
reasons, all across a hundred miles of Alpine tundra. What *you* see is
over a thousand ugly trash pieces of metallic litter.

{Who the hell's gonna clean up this messssssss?}

Are these souvenirs you see from the scrap yard? Do they pose an
environmental danger? Or does this represent some kind of bio-hazard to all
the precious little rare-to-nonexistent flora and their symbiotic
we-don't-wanna fauna?

{Whudda ya think yer doin' innyweigh, stickiiiiiiing little flags in MY
grou-oond?}

Did you think, Swiss Heidi of the Alps, that all these prickly bushes and
weedy Alpine cabbages will die if their roots touch aluminum? Or maybe that
all this marking-for-runners'-safety poses toxic danger to all the starving
elk and caribou that just love to chow down on skinny steel Slim Jims?

{Take them out this instant!  Or I'm cell-phoning the BLM!}

So pop the cork from a slightly chilled bottle of White Zinfandel, O
Sacagawea--entrusted by Louis and Clark themselves to keep America pure--and
proceed to pull out every single little reflectorized metallic flag you see
up there... and then what?

{Oh woe!  These suckers are HEAVY!!!}

Are you going to carry them all back down thirteen thousand feet in order to
properly dispose of them in somebody else's dumpster at the back of their
tourist store? Or are you just gonna quickly carry them over yonder to
where no one can possibly see or find them again for the next thousand
years? In other words, Dear Madonna of the Matterhorn, what makes you any
"purer" than the precious metal miners of the 1800s--all of whom simply left
THEIR tracks and ore carts up there to rust?

{It's alllllllllllll THEIR fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!}

One more thing. When 140 Hardrock runners are ALL lost due to no markings
and they ALL require the humane services of Colorado Search-and-Rescue,
guess whose taxes are going to go sky-high?

{Mah-damn "This Is MY Mountain; YOU Need To Get Off Now!"}

White Zinfandel yuppie wine: we don't drink it ourselves; we'd rather just
guzzle beer.

( O_O )

Good luck to all the WS100 runners this weekend.

Yours troubly,

Rich Limacher

Hi Lois,

Thought I'd share with you guys why I couldn't be at HR100 this year :-)

Katelyn Marie Gerber was born yesterday.  She and mother are doing
great.  She was 8lbs 2oz and she already looks to be a runner (she
came really fast!).

Good luck with Hardrock this year, I hope it's a huge success and a
fun weekend!  Save me an aid station for 2010... I'll be back next
year!!

   - Chris

PS: I just noticed I was wearing a HR100 shirt in the attached photo. :-)
