We will be conducting our Hardrock entry lottery this Sunday. As of today,
we've received 345 entry applications for our 140 slots. A few more may show up
in tomorrow's mail. The list of applicants is at
http://www.run100s.com/HR/entriesreceived.html

I'll put the lottery results up on the Hardrock web page at
http://www.run100s.com/HR/ as soon as we've finished, probably early afternoon
on Sunday.

I know of at least one group that is holding a combination Superbowl/Hardrock
Lottery party, so keep those computers handy while you're watching the TV.

I forgot to mention one of the really cool things about Silverton in
the winter - in the gym photo, notice that there is a small metal
contraption parked out front.

This is a kicksled, and it is how many locals get around for 2-4
months out of the year when firing up the car is pretty silly. I got
to see this in practice when I've visited in the winter and it is a
great sight, from the kids to the moms and babies, all leaving
knife-like cuts in the ice and snow on the ground as they glide around
town.

Truly a cool part of Silverton's day to day life that isn't
experienced by the usual visitors or even the summer residents - since
they stay far away during the cold months...

Greetings Hardrockers,

January was a whopper month for snow in the San Juans. The Silverton
Standard reported 166.9 inches as of near the end of the month. I
say "near" because it's not clear that the Standard is keeping
precise or accurate records date or amounts - THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF
SNOW! If you want to see a couple of photos of snow in Silverton

Hopefully, the start will defrost before July.

So, Charlie, does that mean we are 50 inches ahead of the year we canceled the
run due to too much snow still on the mountains? By the way, it is snowing right
now and Red Mountain Pass is closed AGAIN. I just returned from an epic
ambulance run to Montrose where the car in front of us, on the return, got its
hood mashed by the Mother Kline avalanche. The highway crew had just shot it
with moderate return, cleaned it up and had let a string of about 25 cars start
on over. We were second in line and saw the snow begin to fall around the little
car in front of us, then a cloud of snow was all we could see. The snow plow
came back down, pushed the little car and the snow out of the way and we
proceeded to lead the last cars over the pass tonight. Ah, how I love living in
these mountains. And admire those of you who love the adventure and excitement
of hanging around in MY mountains too. May you all have little angels following
you around as we have tonight!

Lois,

You're right that Silverton is about 50 inches ahead of the 94-95
snow season when we cancelled Hardrock. Spring of 95 was very cold
and there was a lot of snow very late. For example, John and I drove
to the top of Ophir Pass in mid-June during about a six inch
snowfall. I think the late cold that year didn't allow snow to melt.
Also, note that both the 92-93 & 96-97 snow years were ahead of 94-95
at this time and we had "no problem" during those runs.

Nobody knows how this year will turn out but I'm not particularly
concerned, today.

The Feb 14 Silverton Standard carried an avalanche survival story

I've emailed the 2008 MTN RNR Trail Series schedule to my mailing
list. This year there are 18 runs scheduled. These runs are planned
for places from El Paso, across New Mexico, to Crested Butte and
Telluride. As usual, there are no entry fees, no awards, no world
records, no t-shirts, and almost no aid - you're pretty much on your
own with like minded runners enjoying the outdoors and wildlife.
These runs provide a chance to run unorganized and unsupervised on
some of the most beautiful trails in the West.

If you want a copy of the schedule, contact me off line. It you
think you should have gotten one already, check your spam file or
contact me off line.

I'll see you out on the trails, assuming the snow melts.

Greetings Hardrockers,

February saw a lot more snow in Silverton which now has the second
most snow at this time of year since the run started. The most snow
was in 92-93 when the course was wet but easily passable.

If the climate modelers are correct, the spring will be warm with
average precip.

So, DON"T PANIC (yet).

I'm flying in from Australia about 3 weeks before
Hardrock. I'm trying to decide on the best route (and
considering costs of course). Would anyone like to
comment on whether I should just fly straight to
Denver (via LA or San Fran) and hire a car or is it
worth while trying to get a flight into Duarango,
where hire car options will be limited I expect?

On another note as I sit here sweltering in 104* heat
hoping the snow is melting over your way: at last
weekends Six Foot Track trail race
(http://www.sixfoot.com/index.php) I met John and
Vivian Ferguson from Ouray. In a post race crowd of
800 excited runners someone mentions Hardrock and I
hear them from 100 yards away! Apparently John
regularly paces John DeWalt at Hardrock.
Coincidentally, I was with a mate who was over and
watched Hardrock last year and had bumped into John
out running on the trail prior to race day. Small
trail running world.

Thanks.

Hi, Andy!

I assume by "hire a car" you mean what we would call renting. That being the
case, I would look into Durango or Montrose as your destination. I've rented
cars in both places without difficulty, and they will save you a seriously long
drive after your ridiculously long flight.

John mentioned you in his race report (copied below). When you get out to
Colorado, let us know and John and I will take you out for some runs, though it
sounds like you already know the area.

Chris

In case anyone is unfamiliar with John Ferguson: John has run a marathon in
every state and is working on the continents. He always picks the toughest
marathon he can find wherever he goes, though he did make NYC his 50th state
marathon. John's a tough, fast dude, but he's not into ultrarunning, unless you
count pacing. John has coordinated the pacing for John DeWalt for many years. He
lives in Austin most of the year, but he also has a place in Ouray where he
kicks my Floridian rear end up and down the mountains for a month or so before
HR each year.

Here's his most recent race report:

It is billed as Australia's toughest marathon...I am know a believer. I was
confident in my training but at the 5K mark my woeful lack of preparation was
apparent. At the start there is a mad dash on a dirt road for 200 meters until
you arrive at the steps. 800 STEEP, WET, SLIPPERY STEPS. Everyone goes down
single file in a hurried fashion. Then it becomes single track going steeply
down until around 5K. My quads were shot already. It rolled sightly on dirt
roads, through meadows, going over stiles to get over fences, thru numerous small
streams for the next 10K. at 15.5K we went through a waist deep river with rope.
At this point the climbs began. the next 15K had two major climbs and one
serious descent. The switchback road reminded me of Kendal Mt in Silverton but
with no altitude. For Austin folks, think Mt Bonnell road. At 30K it leveled off
and gently rolled on a rock strewn road. The killer was the last 2K where it was
a steep rocky single track decent to the finish. My quads have never taken such
a beating. My finish time was 5:59:24. It was the first time in 58 marathons I
had doubts during the race about finishing. The Blue Mountains where the event
took place is a beautiful place. Vivian and I have seen numerous kangaroos,
wombats, wallabies, and other assorted creatures. The finish line was at the
Jenolan Caves, an incredible place. It has been a great experience. We have been
in Cairns, and are now in Melbourne. At the finish line I met a guy I met last
summer in Ouray while running on the Ice Park trail. He was there to pace
another Aussie. Small world.
On to Antartica!

Coincidentally, I was with a mate who was over and
watched Hardrock last year and had bumped into John
out running on the trail prior to race day. Small

Thanks Chris and all the others that have responded.
Lots of helpful advice to help get me there in one
piece (this time!). And yes, our hire car is your
rental. Except all your rentals have the steering
wheel on the wrong side.

Cheers, Andy

This is the time of year when we all start to wonder what the San
Juan snow looks like. There are a number of web cams out there that
show the conditions. I've selected some that you can go to for the
real time look.

Ouray from way up high: http://www.dickgilbert.com/colocam-ouray1.htm
My all time favorite web cam. On a clear day you can see Rick Trujillo.

Telluride from the Top of Lift 9:
http://www.dickgilbert.com/colocam-telluride1.htm
I think it's looking into Wasatch Basin now but they rotate the cam
every so often.

Sneffels Range south from Montrose (on a clear day you can see John
Cappis): http://www.dickgilbert.com/colocam-montrose1.htm

Dunton Hot Springs near Rico, south of the Wilsons:
http://www.duntonhotsprings.com/about-dunton/webcam.html
This one may take a long time to load.

Durango Mountain, about MP 50 on US 550:
http://www.dickgilbert.com/colocam-durangomtncam1.htm

This web site has assembled many more Colorado cams. I used it to
focus in on those above: http://www.dickgilbert.com/coloradocams.htm

Finally, Silverton Mountain ski has a site (but no cam) with photos
and snow conditions about 5 miles up Cement Creek from Silverton:

I have no financial interest, blaaa blaaa blaaa........

Subject: New Hardrock lottery algorithm for 2009
bwood@...
Send Email Send Email

After much discussion, the Hardrock Hundred Board has decided to tweak our
weighted lottery algorithm for the 2009 run. Our algorithm had been unchanged
over the previous four years. We're putting out the word now so potential
entrants can take it into account in their planning.

Entry lotteries are a bit like taxes - they are a necessary evil, they should be
simple to understand, they favor some over others but are best when they are
generally perceived as "fair", and they can be used to encourage people to alter
their behavior.

The new and old algorithms are explained in detail at
http://www.run100s.com/HR/Selection_procedure_2009.html, but here are the major
features:

- Before, you were automatically accepted if you had three Hardrock finishes in
the previous five years. Now, you are automatically accepted if you have five
Hardrock finishes EVER.

- The male and female winners from the previous year are automatically accepted.

Ticket assignment for the weighted lottery:

- Before, you got four tickets for two finishes and two tickets for one finish
in the previous five years. Now, you get one ticket for each finish EVER.

- Before, you got one ticket for each DNF or DNS (including being wait listed)
in the previous three years, up to a maximum of two tickets. Now, you get a
maximum of one ticket if you were a DNS (including being wait listed) in the
previous three years. NO additional tickets are given for DNFs.

- Top-5 male and top-5 female finishers in the previous year still get one
additional ticket (no change).

- Up to two tickets may still be earned for special service, such as working on
the June trail construction weekend or being an aid station captain (no change).

A major driver for these changes was our desire to improve the chances of
getting in for first-time entrants. We think these changes will improve those
chances from about one-in-six to about one-in-four. We think these changes also
improve the chances for previously wait listed runners.

Any chance you'd consider making the 09 automatic exemption 4 out of the last 5
years then going to 5 years ever in 2010? Those of us with 3 straight finishes
will be thrown back in the lottery with 4 straight otherwise, just when we
thought we had climbed our way out.

The previous two times Hardock was cancelled (1995 due to snow, 2002 due to
fire) were both before we needed a lottery, so then we simply gave the runners
the option of either rolling over their application or getting a full refund.

Now that we more than twice the applicants as available slots, we'd have to
discuss this among the board members before coming up with a policy. The full
refund part would probably stand, but it is not clear whether we would roll over
the acceptance list or start afresh with a new lottery.

As a long time member of the Hardrock family, I would like to applaud
the latest lottery algorithm that the committee has come up with. Now
the best ultra trail race in the country, has possibly the fairest
lottery of them all. Yeah, I lose all my dnf points, but i get back my
finish points ;-)
This will be even more bait to get us to the finish line this year!

On another note, I'd like to mention that our former and present artist
and favorite grammy, my wife Deb, slipped on some ice and fell while
running a couple of days ago and broke her arm, breaking the end of the
radius bone off. She is having surgery to repair it today, so keep her
in your thoughts around 1PM EST...good thing about this is she was told
by the doc that she should be able to start running again in a couple of
weeks. Another good thing is she broke her right arm and she's a lefty,
so the painting will continue!

See you all in July! My favorite time of year in my favorite place ever,
Silverton!
Steve

PS: Let's hope the snow stops falling and starts to melt!

OK, thanks for solidifying my plans.

1999, 2000, 2001, 2004 - finished Hardrock.
2005 - quit for stupid reasons (what do I need another poster for?)
2006 - vowed not to be stupid (taper included 2 marathons in last 2 weeks) and
missed finish cutoff by 6 minutes.
2007 - improved taper (only one marathon) and missed finish by 28 seconds.

Plans for 2008 to knock 29 seconds off my time:

- Increase training from 20 miles per week to 20.01.
- Increase altitude where I sleep in Florida by 5% by putting blocks under my
bed.
- Train more on the biggest hills I can find by running over fire ant mounds
(also to include speedwork).
- Trim my toenails before the race to save weight on my feet. (Have already
eliminated socks).

Good one, Matt! You better trim those toenails as you may need snowshoes this
year. It snowed all day yesterday, but today is clear and warm. A bridge was
closed near Durango yesterday due to the high run off, so really, unless we get
more snow and cloudy days our 200 plus inches of snow should be melted by July
11, 2008.

Steve,
I do hope and pray that all went well with Deb's surgery and she is recovering
comfortably.

I recently had a coworker slip on ice and shatter her wrist. Unlike my ankle
that they screwed together 25 years ago, they wrapped thin metal around the
splinters of bone. She was use it (very slowly and carefully) a couple of days
later!
I hope Deb faired as well. It's amazing how they've figured out how to slap us
back together again.

I have put a series of pictures from the last few months at

http://mtnrnr.smugmug.com/gallery/4693533_wWN7e#277623822

Thought this might give a small what the snow pack looks like in the
high San Juans. There are some shots looking into Wasatch Basin, at
the Virginius Pass Ridge and at Handies Peak.
