About two weeks before the run in 2005, Rick Hodges found himself on
the Bear Creek side of South Mineral Creek a little after dark. This
is peak time for water run off during he day. Rick started across
hanging onto the rope, but soon found himself surfing the waves. He
finally just let go of the rope and floated down stream about a
quarter mile before getting back to shore, still on the opposite side
from where he wanted to be. He ended up hiking down to the bridge on
Highway 55o S of Silverton. He went back after the run and retrieved
his ice axe from the very shallow (relatively speaking) South Mineral
Creek.

Fortunately, the water has never been this high during the run but
nothing says it couldn't be.

It helps to put the rope across diagonally so that you move downstream as you
cross.

Last month, I confidently predicted that the spring would be dry and
warm, leading to a dry Hardrock. Obviously, the mountains needed the
snow which promptly started. I was in Silverton the past two
weekends and saw a lot of snow. Although not cold, Saturday morning
saw about 4-5 inches of very wet snow with a lot more coming down
before I scooted over the pass.

Despite these words, don't panic. Spring is on the way in Silverton.

Hi Everybody,
The snow is melting quickly and the San Juans are starting to show
their colors! We hope all of you who are planning on joining us in July are
doing well!
We are looking forward to seeing all of you. However, we know that
sometimes things happen that will keep you from being with us. In that case,
we'd like to give you a refund. Remember, the deadline for getting a full
refund for this years run is June 1st. It is our policy to NOT roll over
entries to future years. If you contact us about withdrawing from the 2007
Hardrock after June 1 we will still be happy to give you a partial refund as
long as there is someone who wants to take your place in the run.
Keep those shoe laces tied!

Ok, sorting out gear. I've got a question on shoes.
I've never changed shoes in an ultra (and rarely
change socks) but I've never done one at such
altitude. Should I be expecting to need to change up
size in shoes as my feet swell. (I usually prefer the
minimalist approach and keep gear changes to a
minimum.)
Cheers, Andy

The funny thing about swollen feet for me is that they don't swell up until
the day after an ultra and lasts about 4 days. Using your feet seems to
prevent swelling. One year I climbed Mt. Shavano on the Monday after
Hardrock. I started with swollen feet, but by the time I finished the
swelling was gone.

About socks, I rarely change them either, since I rarely wear them.

Hi Everybody,

Memorial Day weekend is a great weekend for Hardrockers! Traditionally,
this is the weekend we evaluate the condition of the Hardrock course and make
a determination as to whether or not it is in shape for July. The San Juans
received about a foot of snow over this past week and there is still plenty of
white stuff up high. Now the good news.... based on the recommendations of our
course gurus, John Cappis and Charlie Thorn, we should and will be holding the
Hardrock Hundred on the weekend of July 13-15! Those of you who are entered
and haven't started training now have an incentive to do so!
Secondly, those who are entered who decide that they have something
better in the works for that weekend have until this Thursday to let us know
that they would like to give up there position and receive a full refund.
After Thursday the refund amount is reduced to 50%.
We are looking forward to seeing many of you in Silverton! If you have
any questions or need any help please let us know.

Hi Everybody,
Greetings from under the sunny skies of SW Colorado. I just wanted to
remind everyone who is entered that today is the last day you may withdraw
from the entrants list for the 2007 Hardrock and receive a full refund of your
entry. After today, the refund is reduced to 50%.
If you are on the wait list we will continue to hold your check until
you tell us to do otherwise or until July 15th when we will destroy all the
checks of people who did not run this year. It's our policy to not roll over
entries from year to year.

See you soon,

Rich,

You are correct - the Runners Manual (section 4.7 Pacers) contains an
error and I will correct that. Thanks for finding it.

As in all previous years when the Hardrock is run in
counter-clockwise direction, runners may pick up pacers at Grouse
Gulch.

Rich,

It's a typo.
In 2006 (clockwise), you could pick up a pacer in Ouray (~43 miles).
In 2007 (counterclockwise), you can pick up a pacer at Grouse (~43 miles).

Jimmy and I have been out on the course quite a bit the last couple of weeks
and thought that some of you may want to know what it looks like this year.
We've also been getting some phone calls asking us to let the group know
what we've seen.

We haven't been over the entire course but this is what we've seen so far.

From Silverton to Cunningham is now completely open. The cornice near the
saddle of Little Giant has just recently melted enough to make it though
there without any problems.

From Cunningham to Maggie is probably open all of the way through now. Two
weeks ago we made it all of the way to Buffalo Boy Mine and ended up having
to turn back because of a huge cornice we didn't feel comfortable going
over. There were also some very large snow fields to traverse right before
Stony Pass as well, which we used snow shoes to get through.

From Maggie to Sherman it's completely open with only a few snow fields to
go over.

The road from Sherman to Burrows Park is open.

From Burrows Park to Grouse Gulch, there's still a lot of snow. We did this
a couple of days ago (actually from Maggie to Grouse) and we ran into some
huge snow fields about 1000 feet below the summit of Handies (going up
Grizzly Gulch). We didn't have crampons, so had to do some rock climbing to
get to the summit. From the summit we were shocked at how much snow (which
was actually ice because of how late we got there) was still in American
Basin. As I mentioned, we didn't have crampons, so had a hard time climbing
back out of the basin. For right now, going through here without snow shoes
and crampons would be really difficult.

From Grouse Gulch to the top of Engineers is open. From the top of Engineers
down to Ouray looks to be open but we haven't actually done it yet.

We haven't yet done from Ouray to Chapman.

From Chapman to KT is open with some snow fields to navigate right after you
get over Grant Swamp.

From KT to Silverton, there is still a lot of snow at the top of the
Porcupine-Cataract Saddle, as well as in Cataract Basin. There's also a lot
of snow once you get back down to tree line, just after where the Puttman
aid station is usually located. This section through the trees is really
hard to follow because of all the snow. Once out of the trees and onto the
Bear Creek trail, it's open all of the way into Silverton. I carried snow
shoes with me through this section but never had to use them because of how
firm the snow was.

We put a rope across Mineral Creek and South Mineral Creek because of how
swift the current was, especially late in the day. There are quite a few
trees down between KT and Silverton but we plan on having those cut before
trail marking starts (provided we get permission to do so).

Hardrockers,

The course marking was scheduled to begin at 9 AM this Saturday, June 30.

I've changed the start time until 12:00 NOON, same day. Please pass
the word around to anyone who is planning to start off with me this
Saturday.

We hope to mark the section from KT back around to Mineral Creek.

HI Everybody,
I am looking for a good picture of the Hardrock for a t-shirt design.
Does anyone have a recent picture of the rock with good resolution and the
rock without anybody kissing, hugging or doing anything else to it?
Thanks, Dale

Hi Dale,
I don't have one in my files, but here's the one Dobies sent in, with a
little editing to remove background clutter, Maybe this will work for
your needs. The resolution isn't real high, but if the image doesn't
need to be large, it might work okay.
thanks.

I have finally made contact with the Ouray Trail Group and they are
interested in a work party on 7/5. It will be on the very troublesome
section of the Bear Creek trail.

In addition, I plan to have a group work on Wasatch Basin above
Telluride on 7/3/. Those who both areas can receive an drawing ticket
for 2008. This is in addition to the Handies work and ticket of 7/7
and 7/8. Yes, you can earn two extra tickets for 2008. Please let me
know if you are interested in 73 and/or 7/5.

Dear John,

Please sign me up for the 7-5 trail work day at Bear Creek, I remember some
of those BIG wash outs last year, and really enjoyed seeing the trail repaired,
plus getting to run over it!

Thank you, so very much for your consideration,

   Liz Walker

The weather is hot (relative to Silverton and the San Juans of course) and dry
today with a breeze strong enough to carry the flag unfurled.

Just a couple notes to you:

Showers are available at Telluride for $2 in quarters. Now, that is not to say
you folks smell bad or anything...

If you are buying supplies from Outdoor World, make sure you mention you are
with the HRH.
If you are buying outdoor supplies in Durango, consider using Gardenswartz
Outdoors. They are supporters of ours!
The Grand Imperial Hotel and Restaurant, Handlebars , the Bent Elbow and
Mobius are Silverton eateries that also support us. There will be more I am
sure.

The Kendal Mountain Cafe will open again for breakfast July 13th if we will
let them know you are coming and, within reason, what you would want to eat.
Last year they were open at 0400 and nobody came. Write me back and I will let
them know, if you please.>

We will be providing both Succeed Ultra and S! Caps at all the Aid Stations.
Karl wishes you all the best in your run and says about his products...
