I love it! You know, the best thing about this time of year is I get to see
the list grow and think about being with folks like ya'll again!

Enjoying the Sunshine State, but dreaming about snow in the San Juans,

Done!

Very well thanks. I'm enjoying indoor track season. Ran a 4:53 mile yesterday.
I hope to get down in the high 4:40s next week. A nice change of pace
(literally!) from the ultras.

Darn!!! I was hoping that this little mountain enclave would
continue to be the distant and mythical Shangri La, suspected only by the
enlightened and reachable only by the most intrepid. Now you have let the

city/state info. Can one of the powers that be put that list back up?

Hi Everyone,
I guess we could call today the "Agony and the Ecstasy" A record number
of qualified entries meant that the Hardrock Hundred Run Committee had a lot
of work to do when we gathered this morning. If you haven't seen the results,
they are posted on our homepage (thanks Blake Wood and Andrea Feucht for
getting this together in such a timely fashion!).
Congratulations to all of you who were selected, we look forward to
seeing you in July. If you ended up on the wait list there are some options
for you.
        a. It costs you nothing to remain on the wait list. We will hold your
check and move you up as spots become available. In the past, those in the top
25-30 were either able to secure a spot in the run or come very close (sorry I
can't be more specific). Under current Hardrock entry policy, everyone who is
on the wait list and doesn't get a chance to run this year will get an
additional entry ticket if you apply for the 2007 Hardrock.
        b. If you would like us to remove you from the wait list please let us
know. Unless otherwise requested, we will destroy your check and application
upon you telling us that you would like to be removed.
We will make regular updates to the accepted runners and wait list.
Please check our homepage regularly.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Hi Dale!

I bet it is always a happy/sad/hard/fun task - knowing so many hopes and dreams
are resting on how those tickets are pulled out of the hat.... but thanks for
all your hard work.

We feel pretty happy.... Steve is definitely in, and I have a good chance of
getting in. Of course keep me on the wait list. I am happy to see some friends
make it in, and equally sad that a couple are pretty far down on the wait list.
it is truly the luck of the draw I guess!

If you guys decided on the finisher's print entries today, please let me know.
Last year I think I just kept waiting and it was weeks and weeks, so I'm just
being a little more proactive this time around. Sorry if I am a pain the butt!

We are aiming at July in Silverton as always - the highlight of our year. Not
sure if our move will have been completed by then, my feeling is that we'll
probably be moving shortly before the run, not enough time to help with
acclimating, but at least the trip out will be somewhat closer. Steve is out in
the mudroom now, installing new doors.. one of the last projects before we put
the house on the market. And you know what that means.. I have to keep it clean
AARRRGGGGHHHH! With two kids, a dog, a cat and several finches. That should be
a fun task!

Well, enjoy the Superbowl if you're watching it tonight. The two teams we were
rooting for didn't make it, so we're not all that interested. Although I do like
watching the beer commercials - they are always the best!

take care,,...
see you in July!!!!!!!

I am just forwarding this, I don't know any more
information than what is below. I know many on the
list from the "old school" either know Dennis or know
who he is so I thought I'd pass this along. For those
who don't know, Dennis is out of the "hardcore-less is
more-shut up and do it" branch of ultrarunning and has
been involved in the sport from way, way, way back.

Friends,

Dennis Herr was in a serious bike accident last evening near his home in
Harrisonburg, VA and was flown to UVA Medical Center here in Charlottesvi=

where he remains in the surgical ICU unit in critical, but stable, condit=
ion. I
spoke with Dennis' son Dana, who Iives in C'Ville and who I know through =
my job
as a school counselor (he is a social worker). Dana expressed his gratitu=
de for
our support and would like as many as Dennis' running friends to know abo=
ut
this, as he is well aware of how much the running community means to Denn=
is. If
someone wants to post this on the big List, Dana said that would be fine.=
  The
family really needs and appreciates all our support and prayers.

According to Dana, it is too early to know the extent of Dennis' injuries=
  except
that the doctors are encouraged that there has been no significant brain
swelling since he arrived at UVA. Dana did say that "it is a miracle that=
  he is
alive" and that it will be a long recovery. If anyone would like to send =
a note
to Dennis in care of his family, you can send them to:

there? Can you assist in this process. Is Dale ok?? I can't get a response from

I am sending this to you all for Russ Evans....Dennis is a Hardrock family
member and I think many here would be interested in how he's doing.

Steve Pero

**********************************

  Hi folks,

I went down to see Dennis today and wanted to provide an update on his
condition.

Dave Horton's earlier account of what Dennis has been through agrees with
everything I know also. I was there for two hours and Dennis was more conscious
than he has been at any time since the accident - I was told this by his wife
and children, Sue, Dana, and Holly. He was restless and moving all his limbs,
as if trying to wake up. His eyes would open and he would seem to recognize
that we were there, and then he would seem to fall back asleep briefly again.
He continued to do this the whole time I was there, seeming to become more aware
the longer I was there.

I don't think he ever got fully conscious while I was there, though I believe he
was close. We think he cannot hear anything, so this prohibits any verbal
communication with him during his moments of seeming lucidity, making it
difficult to ascertain exactly how aware he is. And he cannot speak with the
tubes in his throat. So all you have to go on is from looking in his eyes when
he opens and blinks them. While not sure, I believe that he is aware of his
family's presence there and I think he recognized that I was there too. The
doctors believe his family's presence is providing him with some comfort as he
tries to understand what has happened to him.

The doctors were trying to decide whether to remove the breathing tubes today or
wait another day. He was breathing on his own without assistance, but they were
concerned about pulling them out now and then having to put them back in later
if he had problems. I left before a determination had been made.

He did not seem to be in pain, but he did seem restless. However, everyone
seemed to think the fact that he was able to move like he was moving was a very
good and hopeful sign. In fact, while it is still too early to predict
ultimately how his recovery will go, the indicators so far are very hopeful, and
there have not yet been any new reasons to not be hopeful. I hope that these
positive reports continue.

Dennis' family has really appreciated the expressions of support from his
friends. I felt very welcome there and they seemed to appreciate hearing my
recollections of our trail running experiences together. I was very glad to be
able to talk with them and they willingly shared all they knew about his
recovery progress with me.

Please keep Dennis in your thoughts. After today's visit, I am very hopeful.

That was Dennis Herr, in case you didn't know, who was involved in an accident

As a registered nurse, I was horrified to read that the assumption is out there
that he cannot hear. Unless his ears were actually damaged, please, please, talk
away and tell him everything that happened and is happening. It is common
knowledge that sometimes it is all that patients have to hang on to in that
world of semiconsciousness. I personally sat with a patient and explained what
had happened and he came back during that conversation.

Fellow Hardrockers....

Following is an email Sophie Speidel sent out to the VHTRC list and with her
permission, I am copying it to this list because Dennis had so many friends at
Hardrock.

She asks that if you write something, to copy it to her at
sophiespeidel@... so that she can send it to his son, Dana, who will then
read the stories to Dennis or he will read them at a later date. Below Sophie's
message is what I sent in...

Feel free to pass this on to anyone who might not be on the email list.

Thanks and see you in July!
Steve Pero

********************************
Friends,

I have been forwarding copies of the reflections being written about Dennis to
Dana Herr, Dennis' son, for him to print out and share with his family and with
Dennis. Dana thinks anything we can do to let Dennis know we are rooting for him
would be a huge benefit for Dennis, so if you are inclined, please consider
posting a reflection on this list that you would like to share with us and with
Dennis.

Dennis, you are one tough ultrarunner with a huge heart and a strong spirit.
You WILL get through this---know that we are all thinking about you!!!

Sophie

**********************************
Sophie, this is a great idea!

#1. In 2001 I had run Barkley (the fun run, not the 100) and got my T-shirt from
Gary. I wore that T-shirt at Hardrock that year and someone came up to me and
asked if they had used Dennis Herr's picture on the shirt....I had no idea
because I had never met Dennis. Later on that year I finally met Dennis and saw
that face that is on my Barkley shirt. (Dennis, I never knew you were a model!)

#2. At Cold TWOT one year ( the year of the deep snow), Deb was sick and we
basically walked though the loop with Tucker...while doing this I told Deb that
I was planning on going out for a 2nd loop if that was OK with her. We got into
the campsite at the finish and Dennis came up to me and said, while breathing
bourbon in my face, "If you want to go out on another loop, I'll go with you!".
I had visions of this and instead took the cup of beer that was offered to me by
Mike Dobies.

#3. This is at the same run, but deserves it's own reflection. After the run and
we were settled in, most of the runners had gone home, but Craig Wilson was on
loop 2, with Mike Dobies crewing him. Deb and I sat most of the night on the
back of our car talking with Dennis in the sub freezing temps. He was nice
enough to go down to the local store and get a pizza and bring it back for
dinner and I just asked question after question about Hardrock stories I had
heard about him. One was when he and David Horton were in the lead at Hardrock
and they ran across the water pipe going into Ouray. Now if you could see this
pipe, which is maybe 3 foot diameter and maybe 30 feet above the rushing river
below. The pipe is always wet and slippery. Dennis took a nap at Ouray and David
went on to win.

Then there was the question on how he got the nickname "the Animal", which led
to him telling us of how he ran into some guy at Masochist that came up to him
and wanted to know how he got the nickname because "He" was the real Animal.
The stories Dennis can tell....

One more...

A couple of years ago, Dennis and I were emailing about the upcoming Hardrock.
He was worried that his old Toyota van wouldn't make the drive out, so he was
looking at getting a 2003 VW Passat, which he could get for a good price, but he
had some questions about it and i told him it sounded like a good car, go ahead
and buy it. I assumed that he went ahead and bought it, but while Deb and I were
walking down Reese street in Silverton going to Charlie Thorn's house, Dennis
pulls up in his Van and says "Hi, Guys". I asked him about the VW and he said
"F**k that! Dennis' van, with the falling off bumper, was seen all over town
that year.

Later on that week during the race we got to run together and he said he wasn't
feeling too good while we walked into Chapman together. He said "Go on without
me, I hope I can get through this thing!" I stopped at Chapman to refill my
bladder and looked around for him....someone told me he had already left. As I
walked up the steep, hot and dusty road to Oscar's, I saw him about 2
switchbacks up, waving down to me. I never caught him and he went on to have a
great run, finishing in daylight.

I could go on and on....so many Dennis stories keep popping into my head.

I hope someone will read these stories to him, I would if I lived down there.

Be strong Dennis and get well soon! I look forward to sharing the Hardrock and
TWOT trails with you again!

Your bud,
Steve

Whoa.

For just the tiniest of minutes there, I thought this was

Yo, folks. Hey, I get spammed too. In fact, I get more

Ya know? Even *I* (eye?) know about Internet filters.
Can't this "yahoogroups" be set up to REJECT anything that

Hey Group !

My pacer from last year's HR100 is doing the 3200 mile
Continential Divide Trail (Can->Mex) starting June
2006 and is very needful of help. This is a 6 month
trek.

As it now stands, she will be alone on the trail for
all sections that her daughter and I cannot be there
which will be about 80%.

So help needed will be crew and / or a pacer type for
pretty much the whole thing. Please email me
(rock_cogar@...) if you think you can assist in
this epic journey !

Thanks,
Rock.

Hi Everybody!
There have been a few updates to the 2006 Hardrock 100 website. First,
the 2006 Runners Manual is now available. Many thanks to Charlie Thorn for
editing this and to Blake Wood for making it available on our homepage. It is
rather a lengthy document (62 pages) but it has everything you'll need and
want to know about the 2006 Hardrock.
In addition, with thanks to editor John Cappis and photographers John
Robinson, Charlie Thorn and Joe Prusaitis we now have 37 minute DVD, complete
with pictures, maps by Bill Drake and music from a plethora of famous
musicians and composers, of the counter clockwise running of Hardrock. If
you'd like to buy one you can go to the web site of our merchandiser, Running
Delights (search for Running Delights), click on "our products" and scroll
down to "hardrock 100 gifts". The DVD is the last itme available.
Hope all is well with all of you!
