Hello All,

I've just e-mailed the 2005 MTN RNR Trail Series schedule. This is a
series of informal trail runs that John Cappis originated in about
1981 using the format of the Arizona Mountain Runs that Ken Young
originated.

There is NO PRE-ENTRY, NO FEES, and NO AWARDS.

This year, we have 34 runs scheduled. They are centered in Northern
New Mexico but include runs from Central and Southwest Colorado to
Southern New Mexico and the El Paso, Texas area.

I believe that these runs provide a great way to prepare for Hardrock
while providing an opportunity to see the mountains, wild turkey, and
elk close up. Some of the runs are much harder than others but all
are challenging.

If you did not receive a schedule and want one, please send me an
email (thorn@...) off line and I'll send you one in pdf format.

I'm looking forward to Hardrock and hope you are too.

Charlie Thorn

Memoirs from Jon MacManus, a member of the Hardrock family:

This morning I left my home in Salida, Colorado, with Tom Sobal at 7:00
am, dropping him off at the Mt Elbert Lodge near Twin Lakes where he did
a snowshoe clinic for the Lodge guests. I proceeded north toward
Leadville en route to Denver. At the Cloud City Coffee Shop, I was
delighted to see that unforgettable smile of Lisa Richardson also
getting a cup to go. You know Lisa, the Hardrock poster girl and aid
station co-coordinator. I spent the rest of the trip trying to visualize
the logistics of what she does.

OK. All you tough guys front runners or just finishers think about this.
From now until Hardrock spend your evenings strategizing over your
Hardrock maps about volunteers, communications, supplies and how to get
everyone to the right place at the right time. In you spare time you can
go out for a training run. As the race day nears the job gets more
intense as the shopping begins and the volunteers call to bail. The
training runs are probably out of the question at this stage but you
should be trained up already.

The day before the race the sorting and coordinating reaches fever pitch
as the runners should all be checked in and Silverton is buzzing like a
nest of hornets ready to swarm. First to wake up attending to the last
minute details doesn't give one much chance to think about the run game
plan. But in spite of lack of training and sleep, you are at the start
line at 5:50 am ready to run.

We all know what the run is like so I will not reiterate. After the run,
when we are heading for a shower or the bed, No some people are still
out on the course including a bunch of volunteer. Better get down to
Cunningham to make sure things are going ok.

Finally the race is over and the crews are all coming into town with a
remnant of supplies and a truck load of equipment that needs to get
back to whomever loaned it to us. No time to think about that because,
you are the "Master of Ceremony". After passing out 60 - 80 Hardrock
diplomas and saying goodbye to all of the family for another year, it's
now time to re-organize and deal with the aftermath. Oh yeah! How could
I forget, the hardest part, the smile. Lisa does all this with that
famous grin.

And we think that training for and running Hardrock is a great feat.
just try it Lisa's way.

As I sat in my car on the way to Denver this morning, I realize how much
we owe this lady and how truly incredible what she does, is.

Thank you Lisa and thanks to all the supporting staff of the Hardrock
Hundred, the best organized and coolest 100 of'm all.

Well, sports fans....
It's almost here... that weekend that many of us look forward to all year. That
sporting event that eclipses most others.

Nail biting suspense.. will your favorites triumph?
Will the veterans prove the value of experience, or will the rookies get lucky?
Who will end up sitting on the bench and who will start?
Whose dreams will come to fruition, and whose will end in bitter disappointment?
Will the underdogs surprise us all?
These are just a few of the questions that this weekend holds.

Yep, this is the weekend that it all happens.
And, while you're waiting on the results of the Hardrock Lottery, might as well
watch a little football.. You can probably catch a game Sunday.

good luck, everybody!!

A list of the 215 entries we've received for the Hardrock Hundred as of 2/1/05
is posted at http://www.run100s.com/HR/2005%20Entries%20Received.pdf

Our selection meeting to choose the 125 starting slots will take place on
Sunday, February 6, with however many entries we have in hand.

We're probably close enough to the final numbers to look at people's chances of
getting in. After allocating some slots for automatic acceptances (those who
have finished Hardrock three or more times in the past five years it's been
held), it looks like we'll be drawing in a weighted lottery to fill 90 slots
from a pool of about 190 applicants. The algorithm for assigning how many
"tickets" each applicant has in the lottery is described at
http://www.run100s.com/HR/HRH-Entrants-2005.html. It is the same algorithm as
was used last year, and assigns tickets depending on how many times a runner has
finished, DNFed, or sat on the wait list for Hardrock, and whether the runner
was a top-5 finisher (of each gender) last year. Everyone gets one ticket for
applying, so first time applicants have one ticket, and the maximum is seven.

So far, the distribution of tickets is shown below. Running these numbers
through a program that simulates a million random drawings results in the
following chances for a runner with a certain number of tickets being chosen
(the actual drawing will be done by pulling paper tickets from a jar):

# tickets # runners chance of selection
     1 91 29%
     2 27 49%
     3 28 64%
     4 15 74%
     5 15 81%
     6 6 87%
     7 5 90%

The runners who aren't chosen will be put on an ordered wait list. Don't
despair if you're a fair way down the wait list - last year runners as far as 50
places down the wait list were able to run Hardrock due to withdrawls from
farther up the wait list and entry list.

At this time I am intending to go to the Runner Selection meeting on

Good to talk to you and Andrea today! What a surprise. I actually thought we
would not get in, or at least not both of us...
We're excited! Now I guess we better start getting serious about training!
We have had a major lifestyle change since last summer - we're parents again! No
really, i mean it. We are now raising two grandchildren - a 16 month old and a
five year old. This definitely makes training more of a challenge - I don't know
how young families do it at all.... so it will be interesting trying to get
enough miles or hours in....In fact, I have to go now and "read bedtime
stories"...

While I was doing some research for this years Hardrock I came across
this little bit of information that I would like to share with all of you.
Hardrock women's course record holder, 2004 womens fastest finisher, 4
time women's fastest finisher and one of the nicest women you could possibly
ever meet, Betsy Kalmeyer, is being inducted into the Colorado Sportswomen
Hall of Fame next month. I can think of no other woman who deserves this honor
more than Betsy and I think it is a well deserved honor for her.
Congratulations Betsy!

Hello Hardrockers,

The Silverton newspaper reported one of the highest January snowfalls
on record. As you can see below, there was a lot of snow. The San

snow up there. I can't wait to see how much remains for the run but,
I'm already thinking about going up Virginius this year.

I just read in the Silverton Standard that the San Juans are now on a flood
watch based on the 135% of snowfall that fell this Winter. It stated that the
Animas is reaching record levels and can be expected to be at or above record
levels in June after more melt and some June rain.

How do you think this will affect the stream crossings this year? Or will the
water levels have lowered enough over the next couple of months? Will the
Uncompaghre be over Deb's head this year?

Whatever, I am really looking forward to coming out this year..more than most
years. Guess it's time to move ;-)

Only about 10 weeks!

Check out Running Delights for your up to date HRH needs.
Mother's Day is just around the corner and I know some of the moms that are
entered would love a cozy hooded sweatshirt.

Check it out!!

Oh and yes, it has been snowing all day in Silverton and sticking!!

Just wondered what experienced finishers at Hardrock thought about the
following scenario for this years run:

1. First time runner of the HR100
2. Has a one time finisher ( HURT100) friend to pace them
. this person doesn't like the cold
         . lives at 2500 ft.
. no experience in snow, ice, elevation or weather
. can't go to any of the course marking days because he/she is running
Western States in June
. and wants their pacing experience to allow them to spend the night in
Telluride specifically

What do you do??

You should be prepared to finish without your pacer. Learn the route from
Chapman to Silverton well because it will look very different on the second
night when you aren't thinking straight. Hike KT to Silverton twice.

Andrew Thompson posted a fascenating report from the Barkley about what can
happen to your mind after 2 nights without sleep.
http://www.mattmahoney.net/barkley/2005/andrew.html

It reminds me of my deteriorating mental state when I got lost on Putnam
ridge in 1998 when the flags disappeared. I had hiked it in training a
week earlier and had a map and compass, but I still was lost and wandered
in circles for 3 hours in the middle of the night until the next runner
(Fred Vance) came along and we eventually made it back to Silverton in
51:38.

Go without the pacer and hang with some experienced Hardrockers, you'll be
better off!
