Subject: Re: [howard-citizen] FW: Saturday Rallies for Responsible Development in Doughoregan
... · Doughoregan Manor is arguably one of the most important intact historic sites in the United States. National historians at a conference on Doughoregan a few years ago described it as beyond compare… as an intact plantation with existing historic resources far beyond what Williamsburg has in terms of building resources… as an essential component of colonial history, of catholic history, of agricultural history…. Etc. etc. etc.
There are many more pieces to this puzzle that deserve thoughtful review and discourse. I’d like to encourage it to happen on this list so that we can all learn.
i disagree with mary catherine's use of the word "arguably."
i consider the historic significance of doughoregan manor beyond dispute and that significance should guide discussion of how best to deal with the FUTURE of doughoregan. in light of its historic value, the "private property" aspect of doughoregan is a sham issue. the question is whether the american public is going to sit by, in ignorance, while an irreplacable american historic site is destroyed piecemeal.
howard county local politics is much too small a forum for planning the destruction (or preservation) of doughoregan manor.
