Hi everyone, we've received a message from Eduardo Zablah of La Ceiba regarding
a woman by the name of Argentina Maldonado who works with a woman's organization
in Choluteca that provides support to women with cancer. Argentina is seeking
assistance in obtaining the following:

-gynecological operating room
-colposcope
-mammogram machine
-electrocauterio

Unfortunately, I do not have more information than this. If you would like to
help out or can provide some guidance, please feel free to contact Argentina
directly at giaura_diaz@... or perhaps work through Eduardo
(eduardos52@...). I believe Eduardo speaks English. I'm not sure about
Argentina.

Thanks.

Miriam,
You have been completely misinformed about Honduras. I have lived here over nine
years, and i can the you that the only political problems are coming from Hugo
Chavez's puppet Zelaya's and his thug supporters. They are the ones who attacked
a school bus loaded with children, attacked, robbed, and destroyed a restaurant,
attacked the 71 y.o. Vice President of the National Congress, burnt cars and
buses,.blocked roads, etc., etc,. etc.
Thank God the good people of Honduras have prevented a communist dictatorship
from enslaving this beautiful Constitutional Republic which has the rule of law.
I personally think someone is using lies on the inter net to take money by
fraud. What you described IS NOT OCCURRING HERE! It sounds more like Nicaragua's
tyranny. They recently attacked the U.S. Embassy, and had the U.S. ambassador on
the run.
Viva Honduras!!!

Dear Miriam,
I understand that you are a concerned citizen who wants to help a group
of people who have petitioned you to do so.  But please be careful.  It seems
you are being misled about the events taking place in Honduras.

Look at these examples:
(1)  When Zelaya entered the Brazilian Embassy, more than 200 persons took
refuge with him inside.  Now, there are less than 30 left.  All of them left
under police protection and there have been no problem.
(2)  A group of Campesinos held the Agrarian Reform Institute for 3 months
after Zelaya's ouster.  They were peacefully evacuated, but charged with
destruction of public property.  The are currently free but must present
themselves once a week to the nearest court while they await trial.

There is no persecution for political crimes in Honduras, only Zelaya has ben
charged with trying to subvert the Constitution and his punishment is the
inmediate loss of POLITICAL rights.  He also has charges against him for misuse
of public funds, bribery, malversion of funds.  For those crimes, there are
jail and economic sanctions.

There are several organizations dedicated to subvert order and in need of
financing to bring arms, especially from Nicaragua.  Several caches have been
captured by the police and publicly displayed.  CNN has been showing one of
these, captured in a house whose backyard limits with the school where Mr.
Micheletti will be casting his vote on Sunday.  It included a long-range rifle
and sight.  3 of the 4 persons captured in the home were Nicaraguans.

I would suggest that you send the people you fear for to the National Human
Rights Commission (Ombudsman).  There, they will be protected and taken care of
according to their needs.  Then you can help them through the Commission.

Their website is http://www.conadeh.hn/

In the Menu on the left had column you will find an option for "Informacion
Institucional" and there you will find two submenu options for "Directorio
Estrategico" and "Delegaciones Regionales" where you can find all the Contact
information for Dr. Custodio, the Ombudsman himself, and all the regional
offices.

Please, do not lend yourself or your organization to what may be fraudulent
money schemes or helping to finance terrorist activities.

Yours truly,
Jorge Gallardo

Hello Miri
, it attracted my attention what this lady is saying, in first place there is no
coup de etait, and secondly,  there are no dissapereances, that is not true.
Nobody is being dissapeared, and third, if she wants to go to Nicaragua, it is
because she is communist.
why does she want to go to NICARAGUA, A REPRESSIVE GOVERNMENT?

I suggest that you find out if its that she is trying to get money from you,
because the only trouble in Honduras right now are Zelaya and his followers,
they are the ones who are trying to kill people who do not believe in communism.

Please find people who can tell  you the truth.

I hope you find out what is really going on in my country

Sincerely

of right cheek and right forehead.

I have been following this case for about 6 years now. The child has received
EXCELLENT care. Because the tumor is located about the face, appropriate
efforts not cause damage to the nerves and muscles involved in facial
expression, it has been impossible to completely eradicate the tumor, ie, it
keeps recurring even though it is not histologically malignant.

Due to the political disruptions here, it has been impossible, so far, to engage
a maxillofacial, or similar, team to be involved with her.

A compassionate person has offered to donate funds for the surgery.

Not an emergency. I have copies of "everything."

I understand that this requires some one with special skill in working this this
type of malformation.who "might be" coming down sometime in 2010.

The family does not have their own funds, but they have been VERY responsibly
compliant with respect to their daughter's care!

Since the coup-de-etat, the situation in Honduras has gotten pretty
dangerous for progressive groups. One of my contacts there contacted me
a few days ago, fearing for her life (167 people from her group have
been "disappeared") and seeking help. She has decided to leave the
country on Friday and seek asylum in Nicaragua with her daughter and 3
other adults. They do not have many resources and are looking for
people/organizations that might shelter them for free or for little money.

If you know anybody that might be able to help, please let me know asap.

Thank you!

We are working in collaboration with the Honduran Ministry of Health to
determine baseline micronutrient levels in the Honduran population prior to
setting norms and standards for food fortification. The last national study
was done back in 1996. Since that time the only work that the Ministry has
knowledge of is the work done by the US military in coordination with the
Ministry in two rural areas of the country.

Could you ask the other organizations that are part of Project Honduras to
see if other groups have done baseline blood draws for vat A, iodine, iron,
folic acid, zinc, fluoride and or any other micronutrient. If anyone has
data that is more recent than 1996 we’d love to hear from them. This will
better assist the Ministry to set levels for the Honduran population rather
than basing them on what other countries may or may not being doing.

Hats off to you and many thanks for all the great work you have been doing
especially during this time of Honduran crisis.

I know there are a lot of indicators that i am looking for. If you can find

Hi Noelle,

I'm not very familiar with the geography of Honduras, so I'm not sure
what is closest to Colon, but at Medical Mission Exchange (www.mmex.org

I just sent a copy of the request for help to ALL of the docs out there.

I also sent a copy to Jeff's sister, who is VERY proactive.  She is perfectly
willing to shake the tree.

I cannot recommend that they GO there, because "officially" they are outside the
catchment area, whch the local Colegio Medico very strictly enforces.

I can invite him to come to MY clinic in Las Mangas just "up the mountain" a
VERY short distance.  BUT if things are terrible, I cannot admit him
anyplace.

BUT

it STILL is easier to help people here than in the States.

i copied my messages to Marco Caceres as well, since the wife's emial was not on
the excerpt that was sent to me by David Ashby.

How do I know you???

Hesperian has just released a CD version of /Where There Is No Doctor /
Donde no hay doctor/. The CD contains hi-res and low-res pdfs of the
entire contents in both English and Spanish, exactly as they appear in
the books. Because it’s lightweight, the CD is easier to transport and
much less expensive to post than a book. Hesperian also has the CD
version of /A Community Guide to Environmental Health/.

The CDs are available for sale at www.hesperian.org

My husband is a Honduran native waiting in Colon for a visa waiver, and I'm
in the States. He has a major staph infection on his face, and needs medical
attention immediately (as in, today!). He sent me a picture of the wound via
cell phone, and I was able to show it to the nurses and the doctor in the ER
where I work. They were extremely concerned, and were inquiring about how to
send some IV antibiotics-- however, they will not get there in time.

He needs to get to a hospital ASAP, but I'm not even sure they will see him
without payment up front. I get my paycheck on Thursday, but I will only be
able to send $200, and I doubt that would even be enough. Are there any
clinics in Colon? Perhaps someone knows of some missionaries who might be
able to help my husband at a lower cost.

He is very weak with a fever, and is in a great deal of pain. If you don't
have any information about clinics/missionaries, I would greatly appreciate
your prayer.

Thank you,
Noelle Santos

Hi Jeremy,

Engineers Without Borders asks that all project teams collect Public
Health data & conduct interviews in the communities they help. There are
a few projects in Honduras; and as far as I know the national
organization should have collected some data for this. I will go ahead
and ask to see where that data may be, and see if I can get it over to you.

Jeremy - I am a nurse that works in a small village called Armenia Bonito, which
is near the city of La Ceiba. It is a community of just over 3000 people. I
have had a mobile clinic once a week for about a year and a half and I put on
numerous health related classes. If there is some way I can help you, let me
know. I am close to many people in the village, so would be able to address
economic, health, and nutrition related topics. Let me know.

David,

Could you please send me the data set? It would help me to talk to people about
it. Also, does it contain dietary information or is that information that you
could get in the future - it was unclear to me from your first email.

Hello Everyone!

I am of need of local satatistics that involve healthcare, nutrition, and
economics. I am currently doing research on the topic of healthcare and it's
impact on poverty. I would like to recieve enough inforamtion from various
cities in Honduras to be able to link these items (healhcare, and poverty). As
of now i have all of the country specific data I need. Now I am trying to dig
deeper to obtain a more clear image of my research. Thanks!

David,

This is Sheridan Reiger from Salud Juntos (www.saludjuntos.org). I am a
Nutritional Sciences major at Cornell University, and though I and Salud Juntos
do not have the capacity to help you with this study I will be sure to share
this opportunity to collaborate on research like this with faculty and students
from the NS department (which has the premiere International Nutrition faculty
in the world). It is possible that there is a graduate student tucked away
somewhere that could help you, or perhaps an undergrad in search of a senior
thesis.

Hope that all is well and we will be in touch,

-Sheridan

status of about 700 children in the Cuenca of the Rio Cangrejal near La Ceiba.

The data is tabulated, in Excel format,

separated according to school site, to enable multi year followup.

sex, age, height, weight, mid upper arm circumference,

Finca del Nino orphanage in Trujillo http://www.farmofthechild.org/

Hogar de Amor Orphanage in La Ceiba http://www.helpingh onduraskids. org/

Having the cooperation of these 2 orphanages makes it possible to analyze how
much of WHAT the children are eating to know that these children ARE receiving
all that they need, from an enriched comida tipica diet.

My initial goal was to determine WHAT micronutrients, etc, the typical Honduran
diet is deficient in. That goal is greatly enhanced by the populations of these
two very cooperative and proactive organizations, in particular

I would like help in analyzing the data we have,
AND
in comparing these children's vital statis with those the CDC www.cdc.gov
maintains.

I can send you the data immediately.

Think we could help you. Would be glad to look at the data in coordination with
the Honduran Ministry of Health and INCAP which is the central American
Institute of Nutrition.
