Re: [homer] Poseidon & Zeus

....Good point about Poseidon and Apollo's support for the Trojans. The stories
do vary but as far as I know Ajax the Lesser raped Cassandra (that is why his
ship was sunk by Zeus and he was drowned on his way home).....some sources say
it was Neoptolemus who killed the boy, but W.B. Stanford, although acknowleding
the variants, assumes it was Odysseus. Odysseus had told the Greeks that no
descendants of Priam should be allowed to survive, in order to prevent
retributive raids and vengeance on their own sons. He is, therefore, a prime
suspect and is by no means blameless.

wooden horse) that violated the walls and allowed Troy to be sacked.
Odysseus's conduct during the sacking was particularly vicious. He
threw Astuanax from the citadel, and I believe he raped Cassandra
(but I'm not positive about that). It was this sort of excess
(hubris) that would have incurred the anger of Zeus. I should mention
that the Iliad does not mention these things (Astuanax and the rape),
but they are part of the tradition.
