I have written a Memoir of my homeless experience in NYC. Below, is
a review:

Midwest Book Review
By: Laurel Johnson

Computer - End Program

By: Argile Stox

ISBN 1-4137-2496-5

324 pages at 24.95 Trade Paperback

http://mysite.verizon.net/res8nrbr/

http://argilestox.blogspot.com/

Do you ever wonder about the homeless people you see in your daily
travels? This is your chance to walk a mile in their shoes and
experience their lives. Citizens and politicians can pretend the
homeless problem does not exist, but those thrown into the situation
don't have that luxury.

Computer - End Program is one man's story. Argile Stox is a
pseudonym.

In the wake of 9/11, the life of Argile Stox is rather swiftly
deconstructed. Economic downturns in the New York City area make his
job obsolete. Jobs paying enough to maintain even his frugal
lifestyle are hard to find, if not impossible. His savings are
depleted first, then he loses his vehicle, and finally after several
months his apartment. A quiet, unassuming man who always paid his
own way is left standing on the street with everything he owns
stuffed in a rolling duffel bag. He turns to the Salvation Army and
finds housing in an all male homeless shelter until he can regroup.
His hopes for the future are high. He's intelligent and capable,
after all, and surely this will be a temporary setback.

Although he isn't a drug addict, alcoholic, or convicted felon,
Argile is placed in a shelter warehousing such men. Life in the
shelter is structured by hard rules and domineering overseers.
Newfound friends make life bearable, but Argile soon begins to
suffer from his losses. The once productive self-sufficient member
of society is plagued by anxiety and fear of the unknown.

Exhausted in body, mind, and spirit, he struggles to gain needed
health care, permanent housing, and a paying job. When Argile is
transferred to a homeless shelter for honorably discharged veterans,
he trusts that life will soon turn in his favor. What he discovers
there is danger from violent residents and cruel, unjust treatment
at the hands of those paid to serve the homeless.

Overwhelmed caseworkers try to distance themselves from the hopeless
souls they should be serving. Psychiatric teams have as their only
goals maintaining power and control. Suffering from bleeding ulcers
and contemplating suicide, Argile leaves that second shelter in
desperation. Even life on the street is preferable to injustice and
harassment.

With dignity and scathing honesty, Argile writes his story on the
laptop purchased in his pre-homeless life. Writing is a purgative
and calming exercise. The message he delivers is clear: Don't take
for granted the small pleasures and blessings in life because
millions of decent Americans are one or two paychecks away from
homelessness.

In closing, I must stand in agreement with points made
retrospectively by the author. America has lost the war on drugs,
poverty, domestic violence, mental illness, and homelessness. Until
our elected officials turn their attention away from funding
problems overseas, they cannot address dire social problems within
our borders. This book is a sobering commentary on social problems
existing long before 9/11 and the current economy. I suggest you
read this book, if you have the courage.

whatcha doing here son?
are ya looking for a job?
or are you hunting victims
that you're setting up to rob?
but it really doesn't matter,
   you better move along.
this here town is not for you, because
   you never could belong!

well,...i guess i'd better go
because i'm bringing these folks down
as they live their lives in misery,
i live mine without a frown.
while their lives are all tied up,
i live mine free as a bird.
their possessions weigh them down,
i travel light as a word.

so i guess i'll pack my duffel
'cause it's time to hit the road
one more time i'll play the "okie"
who was known as ole tom joad.
it's time to get a move on,
time again to hit the road
tossed from another campsite,Lord!
i feel like ole tom joad

you better get your butt up boy!
you can't sleep on this land!
you'd just better keep on moving
keep them feet there slapping sand!
we ain't knowin' where you come from
we ain't carin' where you go!
just as long as you keep on moving
you ain't welcome here! ya know?

so i'll truck on down the highway,
as i hum along some blues.
and i never do look back, after
   i've dusted off my shoes.
as i'm walking,i am praying,
hope these people get it right!
'cause it's warm here in the Sonshine!
man, the Light of Gods' so bright.

so i guess i'll pack my duffel,
'cause it's time to hit the road.

There is no question that the Democratic Party cannot win without
the support of African American voters in 2004, and African-
Americans cannot affect the issues most important to them if we do
not participate in changing the direction in which this nation is
headed.

To date, 2.7 million copies of our previous three fliers have been
distributed throughout the US, 33 foreign countries, 67 universities

There's a new tool to use when discussing (read arguing) politics
with your favorite republican or leafleting your local downtown

gone where no President has gone before. (i.e., highest deficit,
lost jobs, corporate scandal, unprovoked war, etc.) Also available
in Spanish.

Hi there,

I am sending out this survey on a website about resources for
homeless people. It's sort of part art project/ part useful
information. I have this little problem that I'm getting more
librarians to answer than people who have actually lived on the
street. I think everyone's viewpoint is valuable and would like
both. If you have time to answer the survey I would really
appreciate it. It's only 7 questions and you might find the site
interesting. I have gotten some positive feedback from people so far.

thanks, pixie

Hello,

I am sending out a survey to evaluate online resources for homeless
library patrons. The survey contains seven questions regarding the
Information Resources for the Homeless web site. I was wondering if
you would be interested in filling it out. It only takes about 20
minutes to view the site and there are only 7 questions.
Please click here to take the survey:

If you know of anyone else who would be interested -please send this
on to them.

Thanks, Margaret Murray

This is a study to determine which online resources (websites) are
useful for homeless library patrons and for those aiding them.
Answering these questions is important to the homeless and library
community. The purpose of this project is to provide access to
materials that may improve the experience of the homeless patron as
well as that of the librarian by providing easy access to helpful
resources. The Viewer will look at the information site created by
this researcher and then evaluate the most and least useful aspects
and make recommendations. The Viewer will spend twenty minutes
viewing
the website before filling out the questionnaire. The survey takes
between five and ten minutes to fill out.
There are no foreseeable risks or discomforts aside from viewing
online resources linking the viewer to social organizations such as
homeless shelters and social security offices. Viewers may benefit
from the organization and availability of resources and websites.

I have put together a new flyer that list the top 100 reasons NOT to
vote for GW Bush.

I've also been passing out a flier that points out Bush's actions
that
have harmed our schools, environment; abused our seniors and
minority communities (i.e., racially, nationally and sexually
oriented). It's geared for those who voted for Bush in 2000, but
are unsure they want to vote for him again.

If you would like a copy, just email me. So far, I've distributed
approximately 11,000 in my community. It's now been distributed in
800+ cities in the US and 11 foreign countries with American voters
(including military bases). To see which cities in your area it's
been distributed, go to our website!

Let's get this information out!!!

Hi!
My name is Joni, and I used to be homeless. Right now I'm in
nursing school and plan to specialize in psychiatric nursing. I have
an online journal trying to develop a program to help homeless people
beyond just giving handouts, But I do have a storage shed full of
blankets, because not everyone can deal with Sally Ann.The journal is
at http://livejournal.com/users/nursesr4evr/ If you have any ideas
to help, especially from those of us who have been there, there is a
way to comment at the site, or you can comment here. If you are no
longer homeless, tell me how you got off the streets. Good luck and
God bless to all ><>Joni

homeless project this passing Thanksgiving (Nov 27, 2003, only a
couple months old).

I am hoping to get a bit of help submitting helpful links on
http://www.sparesomechange.com/search/engine/add.asp (URL submission
page). You can add your own

helpful page links or submit local resources to you that you do not
see listed. I have already

submitted 2,000 links by hand (takes about 2 minutes each, that's
almost 5,000 minutes or 60

hours just submitting, nevermind making webpages or promoting).

I cannot pay you for helping out, but you may get a nice feeling by
knowing you are helping the

homeless or poverty stricken people out there. You never know, you
may need this service some day

too.

Thanks.

I hear often people say panhandlers are bad or ruin their
neighbourhoods. I know what is said as people say it to my face while
I am panhandling. I get called a useless bum, get pop thrown at me by
teenagers, laughed at, etc. I have even been spit upon. I sure don't
know how this treatment could help me, what if I was mentally
unstable or suicidal? Luckily I am not. I just want you to know that
people are out there sometimes on the streets begging for a tiny bit
of help (not to pay their entire rent) to eat or maybe to get a
subway token, not always to support an addiction. What gets me is
that panhandling is illegal in many states and provinces accross
North AMerica which means I am sometimes "shook down" (basically
assaulted) by police officers who make me look very bad in the
public, forcing me to the ground to search me like I am some sort of
escaped convict! Like the streets don't offer enough dangers to me...

My name is David, I have been homeless many times in the past due to
low income status due to heart surgery and other medical conditions
(terminal illness). I am on disability now, but it doesn't give me
much other than rent (small and not the best living conditions for my
medical needs), electricity and a bit of food. It can be very easy to
become homeless again, I am barely making ends meet and all is going
well at the moment. I still need to rely on local food banks
regularly and organizations for occasional help. I panhandle a few
times a month for spending money.

Please donate some food to your local food bank or maybe buy that
panhandler a sandwich (least a banana, cheap and high in nutrients)!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Thanks for that donation, I updated my domain name
http://www.sparesomechange.com for another year (now expires in 2005)
with your donation and bought some tooth paste and a new tooth brush
at the local dolalr store (where i do most of my shopping)! 20 bux
can go a long way, I still have enough for a jug of milk that I am
about to go pick up now :)

Spare Some Change is a phrase heard in all parts of the world in
which we associate either homelessness or near homelessness. How
many times have you seen the sad face of a man at the entrance to a
highway holding up a sign saying "Spare some change, food, clothing"
or "will work for food" How many times have you sped up your pace
when you notice a homeless person in your pathway? This site is
dedicated to those people in a wonderful way. What better way to
show support and ask for support for these forgotton people. This
site is a great cause for showing the homeless and those that deal
with the homeless. From church groups to social workers this site
will assist you by increasing your resources. I am the person you
said was the first to give a donation, I wish I could of given more.
Thank You

If you have not joined this group/club, you will not be able to view
the photos of panhandles, homeless sleeping on park benches, runaway
teens, old weathered homeless men, young homeless street kids, etc.
Even squats and condemed buildings used by squatters.

I have been homeless, these images are all to real to me. I see this
stuff in my dreams... It's a shame I go downtown and I see so many
new homeless people I never met before. I really wish I could afford
to help these people, I wish someone would have saved me when I was
homeless, I just needed a chance to get an address to get welfare, I
wound up homeless due to unforseen reasons (open heart surgery, lost
job). Now I have disability, even now I am living check to check and
barely making it as I get enough for rent and thats about it. I use
foodbanks and panhandle once in a blue moon for a bit of extra money,
also learning web design to make some future money (wish to go to
school, but still paying student loans that went to bad credit while
I was homeless making my life even more difficult to pull together, I
cant even get a business bank account).
