Emmanuel, Thank you for your outstanding work and excellent reports.
It's very encouraging to see people come together and also helpful for
us to learn the kinds of solutions that are being proposed
on-the-ground. I note your request for a laptop. I also note that this
is an example where the Includer http://www.includer.org that our
laboratory is developing would have immediate application, a simple
device for reading and writing emails offline. Emmanuel, when you can,
send your emails directly to fightingpeacefully@yahoogroups.com and we
will all get them. Thank you for your list of telephone numbers. Andrius

Hi,
I hope that your inbox inst full with my mails but I do strongly hope
that you’ve compiled them to see the progress that is being made from
this end.
Currently, peace prevails though they say that peace is not the absence
of wars. Thanks to the ODM which has cancelled off the protest rallies
to facilitate peaceful negotiations with the government. But if the
stalemate remains behind the curtains of peace brews hate and malice
from the results of the presidential election and if this is not dealt
with diplomatically we are doomed.
On Sunday 20^th Jan 08 there was a community meeting and we called all
the effected and interested parties to the Nandi Hills Gardens. Amongst
the persons present were the general mangers from the various tea
estates which included Nandi Tea, Eastern Produce and George Williamson
tea Kapchorwa, various business men and others. A special group that
came is the youths who were terrorizing the local residents, and workers
from this tea zones. There was open dialogue and a number of notable
things were discussed and were implemented immediately so that we could
experience a peaceful co-existence again. Some of these issues included:-

1. The youths that were involved in the various violence activities
to be employed to replace the vacant positions at the tea estates.
This was done at the request of the local; leaders who argued that
this youth will still embark on their night vigil mission of
terrorizing people if they are not employed due to idle and poverty.
2. The Kikuyu who were previously employed to be paid their full dues
and not to be ever employed again. This was termed as economic
federalism that everybody to go to their home place to be employed
from the home province or district.
3. The youths were ordered not to attack the companies or the company
produce or the workers which they all obliged to do.
4. The town business premises that were formerly owned by the Kikuyu
to be taken only by the Nandi’s and not the remnant tribes.

Other issues included; security, police, PNU members from the community
were ordered to defect back to ODM with immediate effect top that they
could be left alone amongst other communal issues.
The most affected people apart from the Kikuyu and Kissi’s are the Asian
traders. Since the economic boycotts stated on Monday they had stocked
products which they Kikuyu companies had manufactured this were either
looted, taken by force or even destroyed by the rowdy youths in the name
of economic protests.
Looking back to the story of Rwanda where a radio station was
broadcasting and propagating hate news that led to the mass killing. I
have learnt that the same can happen here in Kenya for during the
election campaigns SMS were used to send people hate and intimidating
even provoking massages that were politically instigated. Its has been
recently used to create alarms and sense propagandas especially in
Nairobi, where news spread through SMS that the water was polluted from
the source.
Am happy that most people shun such massages from strange numbers.
Currently, these SMS vary; from those encouraging people to contribute
to a fund, others passing peace massages , others hate, other openly
lying that one has won a lottery or a prize from ac competition on
hasn’t participated in. this is the main reason why I’ve mostly sent
airtime and sms to friends especially to those who are hurting. Because
one, they can recognize with me, second am a friend in need hence this
massages can be shared from one person to other en not immediately
deleted when they are received. This is the list of people to whom I’ve
sent airtime and peace sms to

The rest of the amount I used to communicate to organize for the meetings.
Personally I have some minor problems. First is the internet here is
slow due to two main reasons one it’s that the connectivity use. In that
the cyber her uses the local mobile telephone company Safaricom as an
ISP(Internet Service Provider) the speed involved is 230kbps but the
main problem is not the speed rather the congestion of the information
traffic on that channel since it is used to carry data, internet and web
plus the call. Hence, during off peak hours when the phone billing is
down the line is congested and hence it takes ages to open up a page.
The second reason is that the Safaricom charges the bulk of information
downloaded that is they charge in bytes and the local; cyber charges in
hour or minute rate which downright stealing since the whole thing is
very slow. This difference makes the typing online to be a great
challenge. If I can be access to a laptop the economic difference will
be cut down to seventy five percent en I can also enable other or act as
a cyber.
The other problem includes the high rate of goods and services which is
the impact of the wars since election.
Help that we help where it hurts us the most
Thanks
Emmanuel Were
